Meet the Fins - HOW OLD ARE YOU!

(This FanPost is to be read with a game show host voice in mind)

So my fellow Fear the Finners, I give you The Official Age Poll!!! One simple question for you today:

How old are you?

Now you can answer the poll honestly or do what most people do on the internet: Lie. It's okay no one is judging you ;). After you answer the poll you can discuss around you're fellow Fins by saying, "What?!?! That guy is six years old?" or "When I was you're age, the Sharks weren't even born yet..."

New members and lurkers: Come out come out wherever you are! I know you're out there! I think I speak on behalf of FTF by asking you, "What's your gender." This is not asked to offend someone but to avoid future awkwardness.

Example:

Joe Pavelski lover : Isn't Joe Pavelski amazing!

Mr. D : haha, I know a bunch of girls who like Joe Pavelski like you!

JPL: Uhh I'm a guy...

See! That could have been awkward! We want to avoid that. Sadly, now this post is coming to an end. If you're wondering how old I'm am, I'm almost 21 (in 7 years). Thank you for reading Meet the Fins, have a great night, day, both whatever, and most importantly Don't drink and drive!

P.S. If you think it's weird that we're asking for gender, we did it too. So don't feel uncomfortable!

Great job, idunno

Love the awkward scenario – done it myself.
P.S. – are you really 14?

by CTGray on Mar 2, 2009 8:03 PM PST up reply actions

Alright then. Here are a few of my current favorites.

Anything by Jack McDevitt, the Academy and Alex Benedict Series and his stand alone stuff. A word of warning with those, you will lose sleep. You pick one up and the next thing you know it’s 3 am.

Alastair Reynolds. Very good hard stuff (he’s also an ESA astronomer). He does a good job explaining the science when he has to, like space battles at relativistic speeds. The can be slow to start but pick up the pace. Start with Revelation Space here but read Chasm City before Redemption Ark.

Timothy Zahn’s non-Star Wars stuff is good too, pretty quick and easy to read. Especially the Conquerors Trilogy if you can find it.

I’ve recently found Michael Flynn and the man is a genius. The Wreck of the River of Stars is a great G®eek tragedy and I’m working on Eifelheim now. First contact in 14th century Germany? Brilliant.

Hopefully most of that’s new to you. I’ve got more around here I can dig out if you need it.

I have Revelation Space. I’ve nearly picked up Chasm City a few times, but haven’t quite managed to yet.

I read some of Zahn’s Star Wars stuff awhile ago. I found a LOT of the Star Wars books to be full of lame, so I gave up on them. (whiny Jedi, lame lame lame, blahblahblah) But I’d be willing to give his other stuff a go.

Something about first contact in 14th century Germany sounds awesome. I’m writing these guys down.

As a bonus you get British spelling in Reynolds.

Zahn’s Conquerors is fun because it puts a different spin on the whole aliens bent on galactic domination story. (Hint: it’s us) I stopped reading Star Wars a long time ago. The Thrawn stories were fun though.

when your hero is super whiny, I kinda want the other side to win too. I would have also settled for Luke dying, but then Kyp was just as bad. Mara was cool until I heard they had her marry Luke. Then she was dead to me. So when I heard she later died I just went “eh”

I've read only one sci-fi book ever

Ender’s game because it was for a book report

I’ve read only one not because I don’t like sci-fi books, but because I never read :)

by idunno723 on Mar 2, 2009 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

I love Ender's Game

Juvenile? Yes. Ridiculously easy to read? Yes. But it still remains to be one of my comfort books. And the rest of the books in the series/universe – Ender’s Shadow, Children of the Mind, etc. – are all also very good. Ender’s Shadow in particular is fun to read, with the different perspective on the events and all the revelations.

But I’m not really into sci-fi either. However, I am reading Lost Moon and Failure is Not an Option, which are both incredibly fascinating. I am an Apollo 13 buff, though, so that might be why.

I like it a lot

Definitely a lot more mature than Ender’s Game, as it brings up the ethical debate of life vs. knowledge and has a lot of moral ambiguity. You really understand who Bean is and why he is, as well as why some things happened in Ender’s Game. Its a lot more philosophical, but it works well with the character of Bean and still has a bunch of the battle room stuff.

As for Potter, is it just me or do the latest movies actually do a fairly good job at “living up” to the book? I’ve enjoyed them at any rate.

The old movie is epically bad

My favorite part? Where Montag crosses the river in a boat, but the hoverpack-equipped police/firemen (its been a while) can’t. Very Back to the Future-esque (hoverboards, anyone?), except that it makes a lot less sense.

To be honest, I didn’t actually read the seventh book until a month ago. The problem with Harry Potter coming out when you’re six is that when the last book came out a decade later, it reminds you way too much of elementary school.

Spark Notes

Are great as supplemental material – I have to admit. The problem is that many students I’ve encountered, including the really bright, literate ones, feel that it’s sufficient to read those and not the original. This is especially problematic with Shakespeare, but even with something as straightforward as Steinbeck.

I’m at the age where I am immature enough to laugh at my guy friends for having to sign up for the draft on their 18th birthdays, but old enough where I’m pissed off I couldn’t vote in the past election. Its a fine line I’m walking.

Oh, and the military gave me a free razor on my 18th birthday – 9 years ago (sniff).

This place is just so much fun though. I’d been lurking SBN sites since ‘05 and didn’t actually make an account until this place came along. Took another year or so before I started posting. Since then it’s been laissez le bon temps rouler. I still mostly lurk at work. Don’t want to give them any reason to fire me.

Funny – it was a rain day today, and I posted the Montreal story during school hours on account of that… then my principal calls me in, and my knees are shaking (“He knows!”).

False alarm of course… but when I’m at my desk while the students work, it’s so easy to avoid grading papers, and veg out with youz guyz.

Does Freshman Friday mean anything at you’re school? I heard at other schools Freshman Friday is when they beat up Freshman. I heard stories from water balloons to egging people.

Apparantly at my school Freshman Friday is when our “big brothers” (upper classmen) help us with our transition into high school. It. Was. Weird.
