Yesterday was nice, but I'm not too gung ho about it honestly. The Sharks played well, but Dallas is pretty bad this year and banged up with a lot of injuries to boot. I can't wait for them to miss the playoffs. It's going to feel like that Christmas where my mom got me August & Everything After by Counting Crows along with NHL '94 for Genesis, except it's going to be ten times better and I won't have to share it with my brother.
As for yesterday, the first ten minutes are what's holding me back from applauding San Jose fully. Vlasic, Moen, and Ehrhoff all had superb plays to thwart three separate scoring opportunities (open nets in reality), and if Dallas buries two of those it's a completely different game. Throw in a good bounce off a skate (Michalek's) and an empty netter (Patty's), and it wasn't as resounding as I want to think it was.
I guess what I'm trying to say is not too high, not too low. It was a very solid all around effort, and the team as a whole has done a good job of responding after their team meeting on the 18th; but the fact is they need to continue that effort, and do so on the road against teams who are closer to them in the standings. It's really the only thing keeping me watching these last ten or so games without falling asleep.
Colorado is a must win in the sense that the 1 seed could be ours tomorrow outright, or at least for an hour or so. The injuries to Blake and Goc hurt a lot (Goc has played phenomenal along with that entire third line), but that's the nature of the beast. It's late enough in the season where those things become less of an excuse and more of an aspect that you just have to deal with.
Sorry for the short recap yesterday and the light gameday today- just finished finals and Mr. Walker is calling. Trivia goes up at 5 sharp for all those interested.
See ya in the thread ladies and gentlemen.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-1. Goals by Goc, Clowe, and Blake. Goals by Moen, Michalek, and Boyle, the last two coming on the power play.
Go Sharks.

yeah
for some reason i don’t think goc clowe and blake will score, maybe grier will get a marker?
I don't like you Detroit.
Re: Blake and Goc:
Coach Todd McLellan said after the game it was too soon to provide much of an assessment in either case, though he did say both looked like "owies, not injuries."
Wow, if Goc’s knee-bending-the-wrong-way is just an owie (seriously, shoulda gone with “boo-boo”), I will be amazed. It looked horrible on the replays.

Yea, that looked season ending to me.

But remember when Staubitz hugged that one guy (on the Oilers, I think) down to the ice and the guy’s knee bent in a way it shouldn’t? If I remember correctly, the guy was only out for one or two games, if any. Everyone was predicting that he’d be out for months, but it turned out to be not bad at all.
Right, right. It happens.
But it was more about when I saw Goc leave the ice, that guy looked like he was in a ton of pain. He could barely even walk on it.
I could be wrong, but I’m scared.

Yeah, it did look really bad. I’m not sure what McLellan could gain in terms of a physcological advantage by calling it “just an owie”, but it seems like the good ol’ playoff injury report is already in effect.
I was banking on that third line chipping in on the scoresheet a fair amount too. Drats.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Well depending on how they hit, it could just be a really nasty bruise. Any hit to the knee is enough to make you want to cry, and one at speed is likely to smart enough to keep you from wanting to put weight on your leg. As was mentioned above, we already have precedent for really bad looking knee injuries being minor things in reality. I have to think if McLellan said “owie” it’s not a season ender, but it is enough to keep Goc on the sidelines for a few days.

let’s just all cross our fingers that his definition of owie is the same as ours

In retrospect it was probably Wilson’s contract for next season. Ba-dump—psh!

I actually just read something about it, here. Its a bit of a ways down in the article.
Sharks got shut out, 2-0, by the Ducks. Wilson challenged them to do better. Had a 3-2 shootout loss to the Coyotes. Held a two-hour meeting. The next game, they lost 5-2 to the Ducks.
Very similar situations (loss to the Coyotes created a meeting), but the outcome was completely opposite – last year they lost badly, this year they first went to a shootout (and won) in a hard-fought game and then had a decisive victory over a division rival.
Kind of a general statement, but even Sharks fans have to admit that the sudden downfall of the Avs is a bit surprising, given their lineage.
It is a little bit surprising, and I dont have the numbers in front of me, but it seems that the Av’s have gotten progressively worse every season since we dumped them out in the 2nd round a few years back.
Their goaltender situation also isnt great. First Roy retires, and since then we have seen a rotating door of goaltenders, and all have been in contention for the starting job:
Aebischer
Budaj
Raycroft
Theodore
None of which have struck confidence into the heart of anyone.
Compare that with the Sharks
Nabokov
Toskala
Schaefer
Greiss
Boucher
You could argue that Toskala made a run for the number one job, but aside from that, we have always known who our number one is, and the rest were definitely number 2. Having that confidence goes a long way.
Also, not putting your fingers in a snow blower helps too.
I don’t think its the lack of stability in goal that’s hurting them, just the lack of a goalie that can outright steal games for them. I mean, I don’t watch the Avs at all, but I’ve heard next to nothing about Budaj and Raycroft – and I’m generally pretty up-to-date on netminders around the league.
And I’m just speculating here, but it might also be the changing of the guard – the older players that were around in the Roy/Sakic/Forsberg years (including both Sakic and Forsberg) are starting to leave/have left, and its hard for a team to lose so many key players for so long in a short period of time. It’d be like Marleau, Thornton, and Nabokov all starting to retire around the same time, and Pavelski, Michalek, and Clowe have to step up and be the key guys on the team. Granted, its not a perfect comparison (especially since we’re so loaded with goaltending prospects), but it’ll do.
And, yeah, becoming an honorable mention candidate for the Darwin Awards tends to not help things.
I agree with the changing of the guard part. I think the future for the Av’s is decent if they can get and keep a number one goaltender, and also hang on to a guy like Stastny. I think they have proved this season that attempting to ride their franchise players (Sakic and Hejduk) to the playoffs was not going to work, and it’s maybe time to think about re-tooling without having to pull Forsberg off the long term injured list for a playoff push.
In the new NHL (I hate saying that, but it seems true for my argument) you have to have stability in net, and a goalie that can steal games when it seems that all fixtures are so closely contested (Does anyone know the percentage of victories by just one goal?).
It seems like the only safe lead is when you completely blow your opponent out of the water by 5 or more goals!
I think for Colorado it hasnt helped that they have had major injuries every season to key players. The injuries to those key players probably does have more to do with their slump than their below average goaltending.
Also, I’m fairly sure that sacrificing corn and images of Steven Seagal to the great Snowblower god wouldnt help their chances at this point in the season.
According to WTC, Goc is out for at least a week and Blake is day to day. He won’t be playing tonight either. Cavanagh will take Goc’s place and Semenov will take Blake’s spot.

So, what in the knick-knack-paddywack-give-a-dog-a-bone is going on around here? — Dan Rusanowsky
Fun fact for the day, followed by a sad note
No team so far this season has beaten the Sharks twice at home. The only two teams that have the possibility of doing so are the Colorado Avalanche and the Phoenix Coyotes, against whom we have two home games each. If the Sharks win today, then we just have to beat the Coyotes on Mar. 28 or Apr. 9 (preferably both!) to reach that (insignificant?) milestone.
I’m pretty sure the Sharks have never gone a season without at least one team beating them twice at home – feel free to confirm or deny this.
On a more personal note, I’m too sick to go to the game, plus I have loads of work to do (which is tricky when sick). I actually gave away my tickets (I’ve never given away a whole pair before), and I won’t be on the boards tonight. I WILL have the game on, but in the background while I work.
It’s a very dark day indeed for Mr. K. – keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

How can this be called "consistent"?
After that hit on Marleau (which was eventually given a SUSPENSION) was only given 2 minutes, how can a hit (that will most certainly NOT be given a suspension) warrant a misconduct?
If Marleau had cried on the ice a little longer, would’ve we gotten the call? Ridiculous.
