Sharks Beat 'Yotes 3-2; Patrick Marleau Possibly Injured
| Sjsharks.com Recap | Game Summary | FTF Gameday Thread |
Patrick Marleau Injury Speculation
It looks like it might have been a knee to knee with about four minutes left in the first period. He did not take a shift after that during the first twenty. Looking at the replay, it seems like this might be more of a case of playing it safe considering he took some solid strides directly afterwards. He missed the rest of that period, and although he did come out for the second, it must have been bothering him.
In terms of handling it, I wouldn't be adverse to him sitting the rest of the season provided he is ready for the playoffs. Although the first seed is important, Patty's health obviously takes an extreme priority.
[Update 12:32 AM]: David Pollak has more.
First Period
Very open game to start this one off.... Thornton just muffed a great pass by Patty.... Sharks turning the puck over in the neutral zone, but Phoenix is on the same boat. Once again HP's infamous ice conditions come out to play- people slipping, pucks bouncing, you know the drill... I like what the defense is doing at the blueline- doing a very good of standing people up and restricting entrance to the zone.... First power play had a handful of good chances.... Tides turned a bit in the last five minutes, with Nabokov making some solid saves he should, and will, make....
Second Period
Nice power move to the net by Kurt Sauer to put the 'Yotes up one. McGinn's been making a case for getting on the playoff roster all year long, but needs to cut that angle off. Can't give anyone that much space.... Jody Shelley has some of the best hands in the NHL today.... Cavanagh with a nice goal to net his first career NHL goal. Congrats sir.... Funny thing about the last three goals- coming into the game, all three players had combined for one goal this season.... Mentioned this before in the Nashville recap, but let's reiterate- JR works very well on that first line. He was involved in generating a cycle all period and has got the hands and scoring touch to play with Patty and Joe.... Nice to see Moen get involved a scrap while wearing teal. Randy and Drew mentioned it went back to the hit on March 17th Winnick put on Boyle.... Fedoruk was right to defend Jovo Cop, and I disagree with Randy when he said that Shelley didn't deserve a penalty. He saw his numbers all the way, and although he held up on his hit, that's a dangerous play to make along the boards. In my book you hand out coinciding minors and quell any further retribution. Notice how Doan took a run at Murray around the nine minute mark.... All four lines are rolling well this period- McLellan's done a good job of giving that bottom line more ice time lately....
Third Period
Teams are really going to be faced with a conundrum when deciding which San Jose forward pairing they're going to throw their shutdown line against come playoffs. Common sense obviously says the first, but a healthy second should warrant serious consideration. I wouldn't be surprised for Milanaire, Pavs, and Cloweverfield to see roughly a third of their shifts against top pairings.... Sweet move by McGinn to generate a scoring chance halfway through the period- nice creativity and vision to bounce the puck off the sideboards, nice speed to beat Jovonovski in the race to the puck, and nice backhand to almost put it home.... Semenov is a premier whipping boy for Sharks fans, and rightfully so- dude makes some killer errors defensively (ever notice how he'll play solidly one game then follow it up with a complete stinker?). That being said, I wouldn't mind him getting some power play time with Blake out. That stick has a lot of pop, and he's been putting it on net lately. Thoughts on Boyle, Ehrhoff, Vlasic, and Ehrhoff holding down that role on the blueline for the time being?.... The last half of the third tilted towards Nabokov, and it seemed as if the Sharks let up on the pedal a bit....
FTF Star Of The Game
All in all a solid effort tonight.
Go Sharks.

Apparently Shelley heard me say Staubitz has more skill than him and he doesn’t belong on the roster.

But hockey on it sucks. As well as the lack of GTA. TIger woods is sweet on it though.

It just doesn't feel right.
And comared to the other systems it looks like a version 3 years older. It’ll get better for next year’s version. It would be nice to be able to play against other SBNers too.

Oh wow
McLellan just totally ignored the upper/lower body question. Usually you get at least that much.

Back from the game
My dad lost his voice, my hands are sore from clapping so much, and a guy yelled in my ear all game (“SHOOT THE FUCKING PUCK!!! DON’T WAIT FOR A PERFECT FUCKING CHANCE!!!… GOD DAMNIT, WHY DIDN’T YOU WAIT TO SHOOT THE FUCKING PUCK?!?!… COME ON, HIT SOMEONE!!!… GET THE FUCKING PUCK OUT OF THE ZONE!!!”) and it was completely awesome (aside from a certain player leaving the game).
Started out odd. Faceoff, we were getting all settled, and then BAM! Linesman gets hit and the head and lays down flat on the ice. Sharks injury bug spread to the linesmen as well? After that, the first period was pretty uneventful. Fun, and the Sharks were outhitting Phoenix something like 8-2, but uneventful.
Second period everything happened. My dad and brothers all went to the bathroom, and the Yotes scored. Then Shelley scored unassisted and everyone was like WTF? But he probably got the biggest cheer the entire game. Then Cavanaugh scored his first NHL goal and everyone cheered for him as well (not as loud, but still pretty loud). Then the Coyotes scored on a 2-on-1 (blehh), and then Moen got into a fight. The fight was awesome. It was amazingly loud near the end of the fight, when Moen took over and got the takedown.
Third period Pavelski scored on the PP, and everything was right with the world. I finally noticed that Patty was gone (since us Tank denizens are kept out of the loop on things like that), and started freaking out. Not much else happened (except for an insanely long icing thing that everyone started booing). Empty net, but nobody scored. Nabby tried, but it was too late and he missed by about a foot. Oh well, we won and that’s all that matters.
Oh, and a pretty big cheer went up when the pre-game “games around the league” thing announced that the Wings were shut out by the Islanders. And the anthem lady sung insanely high.
Thornton played a surprisingly good defensive game tonight, especially on the PK (that surprised me) since apparently the injury bug will not allow for the penalty killers to remain healthy.
That’s all for tonight since I’m extremely tired and don’t feel like spelling correctly or really thinking at all.

here's another question
If i have a picture on my computer, can it be uploaded, or does it need to be on a public web site?
Was just about to create a fanshot
My first reaction – NOOOOOOOO. My second reaction – DAAAAAMNIIIIIIT.
WTF is up with the injuries? Did some rival team put some curse on them or something? I blame Detroit!
By my count, we have 10 guys injured and 15 guys healthy (NHL regulars only). Luckily, the WorSharks and the bottom lines have been stepping up recently, so the minutes have been spread out a lot more, but it still worries me. There are only two weeks left in the regular season, so if McLellan wants to get all the injured players playing again before the playoffs, we’re probably going to have a few games where the lines and players are completely different from one night to the next.
I’m looking at the Worcester roster, since unless Cheechoo is better we’ll be seeing another call-up, and wow. The only forward that has over 20 goals is Riley Armstrong, with 23. Most others have either less than 10 or are around 11-13. Granted, I expect Roenick and McGinn to be able to step up into the top-6 roles and we can call up one of the less-skilled forwards, but still. The organizational depth is really being stretched to the limits. The only thing that’s keeping me from completely losing my cool is the thought of how many players we’ll have to choose from once they all get healthy. We’ll actually have healthy scratches! It will be awesome.
Well that's craptastic.
Hopefully it really isn’t anything serious and they’re just playing it safe. We’re going to need Patty a lot more in a couple weeks than we do right now. I’d rather see him and the rest of our banged up roster miss what’s left of the regular season than any postseason games.
As far as all these injuries go, maybe it’s time to break out the bubble wrap…

Haha
I was out making my documentary for school, and my dad texted me that the Red Wings won. I had to keep in my cheer since we were filming at the time.
Oh, and watching the Wild game – I’ve decided that I like that Greenlay guy, with his argument that San Jose has the “best three-headed monster” in best forward, defenseman, and goalie with Marleau (not Thornton!), Boyle, and Nabokov. And then he also argued that Nolan was the most important player on the Wild. His opinions are very pro-Sharks, lol.
you mean lost, right
no cheering for a red wings win! ;)
