Game 1 Wrap Up: What to say...
Plank also shared his thoughts on tonight's game... his wrap can be found here.
What do you say after a game like this?
Honestly, I'm having a hard time putting my fingers to the keys.
Was it it was Hiller who stole the game?
Was it was the power play, which went 0-6?
Maybe it was the first line, which managed a whopping 7 shots (five by Setoguchi) all night.
Well, it was a combination of things. In the end though, the Sharks simply gave the game away. It's tough to watch a team play so well all year long, only to watch them mail it in in the first game of the playoffs. Heart breaking.
As Plank mentioned before, there's still an elephant (a rather full figured one) in the room. The Sharks haven't scored even strength in 282 minutes now, and thats a span of almost five games. Eek.
What was really scary about this game (aside from the lack of scoring) was this: the things that the Sharks succeeded in all season failed against the Ducks. Pavelski wasn't winning face-offs. Vlasic wasn't his usual smart self. The first line wasn't dominant. The power play ran as well as my first car.
If the Sharks want to win game two, they've got to come back and play Anaheim like they have all season. They have to be physical. They have to shoot the puck. They have to skate. They have to make crisp plays. And for gods sakes, they have to score.
I wasn't impressed with what I saw from the first or second lines tonight. No one seemed ready to take a pass, and therefore, there weren't many great scoring chances. Hiller had a good game, yes, but the Sharks' shot selection was extremely predictable. The third line was o.k., but we can't count on Goc and Co. to carry us into the second round. That lies on Patty's and Joe's shoulders. Two shots from them won't cut it.
The power play (in going zip for six) was unimpressive as well. There was hardly any traffic in front of the net, as San Jose had trouble getting the puck past the blue line. It seemed as if they only had one opportunity per rush before they were pushed out of the zone.
There are some plusses to tonight's game, though. If you watched without the disgust that I had after the first Ducks goal, you could tell that the Sharks are a better team. They outshot Anaheim 35-17, for Christ's sake. Not included in those 35 shots were the two hit posts, one each from Ehrhoff and Boyle. On any other night, outshooting a team by 18 would be good enough to win. Not tonight.
I'm angry, but not disheartened. The Sharks will score, and they'll convert on the power play. McLellan may have his work cut out for him now, but this team can't be happy with their play. It's now time for all that veteran leadership to step up.
Let's go Sharks. I'm still saying this will end in five.
(BTW... corn is retired until further notice)

This is what worries me. It was the same story last year. What is it with this team and the playoffs? Hoping for a better showing in game 2. We know sharks are better but they still haven’t seemed to figure out the playoff mentality
Bad feeling
This is the way they play when its crunch time. They cant put any one away or even score for that matter . They are not feared like a Detroit . Why not ? Yea they had the most points but so what now doesnt matter. I hardly even heard Marleaus name tonight…Something happened to this team since the all star break. Yea they won but were not scoring too much..They dump the puck way too much.I got a chance to watch other playoff games the last 2 nights and teams dont dump as much..they need to bring the puck up with good passes and get open shots and shoot quick…What is it gonna take to get them to out hustle …Sad to say but I cant see this team winning a game by more than 2 goals at any point…where is the team that started the season strong and drove to the net…now its all about dumping…wake up guys only 3 losses more and its the same ole story..I cant watch that happen

Disappointing, very disappointing.
Was frustrating as all hell to sit through that. At least there were only a handful of Ducks fans around where I was sitting. I don’t know if it’s gonna help, but I’m washing all my sweaters tomorrow and going hatless for the rest of this series.

Disappointing yes
But I wasn’t all that disappointed with how the Sharks played. Plank summed it up pretty well in the post above. It’s a 7 game series, folks. If tonight created new lines on your face you need to take a step back.
I’m looking forward to Sunday. I will also be washing my jerseys. I smudged them yesterday but it felt off. Maybe it was the wind. I’ll try again after I wash them.
Lurker, did you guys see the Sharks fan rip that sign out of the Ducks fan hands in 209 and rip it to pieces? HE chucked the piece down the stairs and then stared at the Ducks fan like “LET’S GO!” and the Ducks fan, in true sports fan fashion simply raised his arms, and turned around to face the people behind him. I’m sure he whooed. All of 209 turns on him and he keeps posturing proudly.
I love sports fans.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Yeah we saw that.
It was funny when the blue coat gave him most of his sign back and he sat there trying to flatten it out. Then somebody threw one of the pieces of it at him. Note to any Ducks fans out there: don’t sit in 209.
Sharks did look a lot better than the Ducks out there. It would just be nice to see them be able to capitalize on it. And I don’t know how many times I’ve said it, but I’ll say it again. Damn thief.

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Sadly, no.
It was just the usual stuff. Lots of “shoot the puck” unfortunately. I’m sorry, but what does 35 shots, 18 shots blocked, and 8 missed shots look like they were doing?
Oh, fun fact. Half those missed shots were Ehrhoff’s. He also had 4 on net (crossbar!) and one attempt blocked.

I think that's all the pent up angst
from failures past. It’s like Cubs fans; we Sharks fans have had to endure endless talk of “choking” and “failure” so we end up looking for ways to validate that assessment of us. Given our history and the way it’s played in hockey media, you’d think that the loss last night was in a single elimination tournament instead of a best of 7

Sadly, Sausage!: The Musical, never saw the light of day.
that is one of the best names for a musical I have ever heard
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
The synopsis is even better.
Son of a butcher, Billy, is visited in a dream by the sausage tree. The sausage tree gives Billy recipes to transform his bland bangers into competition winning super sausages.
So Billy makes the sausages and people come from miles around to buy Billy’s bangers.
But! a rival butchers daughter is sent by her father to make Billy fall in love with her so she can steal his secret recipes.
Sausage alley becomes(the street the butchers shop is located on) flooded with knock off sausages, until nearly all of the butchers go out of business. Can Billy mend his broken heart and save sausage alley?
It’s got romance, conspiracy, and sausages. What more do you want from a musical.
Uhmm guys...

Don't see why not.

Somehow I scored tickets to Sunday's game.
Hopefully I’ll actually be able to meet someone this time.
Nice
TCY and I will be at the Brit before the game. Details to come.

I'm not worried
Every game is going to be a close tense game. We just needed one more game to get our full bearings straight with everyone healthy. That was yesterday. I know it sucked to not find the back of the net, especially in game 1. But given our last week I’m not surprised.
On the upside, we have the ability to win on the road. On the downside, the longer this series goes the greater the chance we sustain at least one devastating injury. I look for us to get on our horses on Sunday.
Go Sharks
I think I pulled my swagger muscle...
San Jose Sharks center Marcel Goc (11), left, of Germany, attempts to score using only the sheer force of his mind. You’re not a Jedi, Marcel. Put yo stick down.
Brilliant.
