Game one was disheartening, but there were some positives. The Sharks outshot the Ducks nearly two to one, both at even strength and overall. Boyle looked like the player we've seen all season- strong puck carrier, a guy who's going to put the team on his back when they need him. While Nabokov may have let in a soft goal five hole, he made some good stops throughout the course of the tilt. San Jose drew more penalties, and at one point you have to figure the power play is going to click.
Game one was demoralizing, but there are some intangibles. How about the six Cup rings in the room right now, that veteran presence San Jose has lacked in past playoff runs? Two posts Ehrhoff and Boyle hit respectively? A couple inches and we may be looking at a different outcome.
Game one was frustrating, but there are some things to be learned. Big Joe's line didn't match up well against Getzlaf's- will McLellan consider throwing out a checking line against them, giving the Sharks top scorers some better looks? Jody Shelley was a non-factor, only taking 3 shifts and seeing 2:02 of ice time- will the coaching staff take another glance at either McGinn, Plihal, or Lemieux and give them an opportunity to contribute?
Game one may have been a moral victory in some sense. Slight tweaks need to be made, nothing drastic. But let's not make a mistake here- tonight is as close as they come to a must-win. The scoreboard is the defining line at this point in the season, and looking at positive trends in a loss only take you so far. The shelf life for these things expire once 7:00 rolls around tonight.
We've got a squatter on our hands, boys. Kick down the door and raise some hell.
Prediction: Massive alcohol intake nestled snuggly between a Jody Shelley hat-trick. How's that for efficiency.
Go Sharks.

Flying home as this one happens
I’m in Jerusalem still – I fly out at 5am Israel time from Tel Aviv tomorrow morning, and I don’t get in until almost 5pm PST (with connections in Amsterdam and – hey there Plank – Minnesota). Soooo… I won’t find out how this one went down until I land in the Twin Cities (assuming the newspapers are updated).
I’ll make this succinct (and yes, I’m the Chicken Little to Plank’s Mel-Gibson-in-Braveheart) = if we can’t “force” a Game 5 tonight, this series is done.
Feel free to badger me on that point – but we’re going to be the Western Conference version of the Capitals if we don’t split the home games.
On a more general note – regardless of what happens, I’m looking forward to being able to watch hockey live upon my return. The Middle East doesn’t do hockey (surprise!).
GO SHARKS.

There are alot more positives than negatives one article I was reading pretty much suggests the game 1 loss was not a bad thing the article basically says by the Sharks losing game 1 will make the players not think they can just walk through the playoffs and they will listen to what Coach M has to say . It keeps there egos in check is what I gathered I still say Sharks in 6
wow....
I had a premonition I would press Post instead of Preview… damn it! That was supposed to be a picture. Anywhoo. GO SHARKS!!!!!!! I’ll be at the game!

Torrey Mitchell
So the Sharks’ site no longer has him listed as being on the IR (and in the past the site has been very good about correctness as it relates to being on the IR). Anyone else think there’s a chance that we see a surprise return tonight? Mac’s been very coy about his responses when asked how close Torrey is to a return. It’d be a huge energy lift for the team, the crowd would eat it up and he embodies exactly what this team needs: hard work, energy and a general enthusiasm to play every second like it’s his last.
The Todd said in the post Friday practice interview it was sort of up to the coach and how comfortable he felt tossing in a guy who hadn’t skated in one game this season. But he also said he thinks they could use his speed.
we’ll see!
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Yeah, under most circumstances I don’t know how much of a benefit it’d be to play a player who hasn’t skated in one game, but there are special circumstances here, and with Shelley basically not playing last game, there wouldn’t be much to lose.
I interpreted what the Todd said about Shelley to mean they didn’t get to use him they way they had anticipated, which is why he had so few minutes. I’m probably making that up, but there’s not too much harm in giving Mitchell a shot. If he’s horrid, bench him.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
If I saw him on ice tonight, I would be so freakin excited

I kinda got that same impression about Jody. I don’t see Mitchell coming back in, not now. There isn’t a spot on the roster hitting the ice that is a throw away.

I'm not wearing Shark stuff
but I do have a Sharks bag with me. I usually don’t wear Sharks gear on days I’m not attending a game in person, unless it’s a hat. My jersey’s haven’t been winners at Mina’s, and I usually only go all out for things like Game 7.
Somehow, I doubt my clothing choice has much to do with a win of loss, but i feel like the jersey hasn’t had the mojo lately, so I’m letting it air out in the sun.

I was watching clueless the other day. What happened to all the people who were in that movie? That one guy is on Scrubs and Paul Rudd is having a revival. But what about Alicia Silverstone and Britanny Murphy???
Alicia Silverstone has done some TV work and VO work lately. She appears to still be busy. Brittnay Murphy has also been busy doing VO work and movies. She was in Sin City and looks like she’ll be in Sin City two.
nothing super big (minus Sin City) I’ve heard of for most of the work they’ve been up to, but they’re both still working, which is cool.

Mitchell is on the ice during warmups
a friend just called me and told me he is skating during warmups right now..just throwing that out there..
thisreminds me of the one sharks game i caught this season
when cheech had been injured but was out there inthe pregame skate. and then he didn’t play and the entire game the 2 teeny bopper girls sitting next to me kept whining “where’s cheechoooooooooo he’s so cuteeeeee!”
so just because someone is in the warmups, we shoudln’t jump to conclusions!
by a10dency2ask on Apr 19, 2009 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Agreed
but still a good sign that he is dressed and skating in warmups. Getting him ready for the game situations and how it feels to be on the ice near game time. Whether he plays or not (i dont think he will) its still a good sign for his return.

Torrey is my favorite player
That being said, I’d rather the Sharks win than see him play. But he does make an interesting addition if he plays. Then again Huskins skated in the pre-game for the first game so take this with a grain of salt

Well at least the sharks have woken up, shame we’re already down. Not sure i like the lines either, managing to make Thornton even less effective. Impressive. And maybe its just the whole inability to score thing that the sharks have got going on, or maybe because the only person i know that follows the nhl is a ducks fan and he is not going to let me forget it if they knock the sharks out, but the ducks just like so much more threatening

HEY THERE ALARMISTS:
We are playing well. The only goal the Ducks have scored, Ryan EARNED; we didn’t GIVE IT UP. Nabby has been strong, our forwards have had a much bigger presence, Thornton has made a few great passes and the defense is getting involved in plays and getting back to stop rushes. We’ve dominated most of the play, and I think we’re going to be fine.

according the CBC announcers, the Sharks are playing better tonight thanks to Mclellan’s shifting of the lines.

and when the dam breaks it’s gonna look like the Flyers vs Pens…and if we keep working it WILL happen soon…all the pieces are in place. The guys look good…so many ‘missed it by that much’ (apologies to Bob Uecker).

I think that the Ducks are playing like the Sharks did in Game 1
They are only relying on Hiller like we were relying on Nabby. Just keep getting pucks to the net and they’ll go in
i wouldn't say at all we relied on nabby in game 1...
this is just a pretty different game overall

I'M BA-ACK!
Yup, that’s right, I’m here, just drove in from Anaheim.
Do you want to know the amount of dedication I have? We were driving down 101 (its “more interesting,” according to my dad), got stuck in traffic in LA, and were forced to listen to the game (the ENTIRE game, because traffic was that bad) via Ducks radio. The announcers have a serious hard-on for Murray. He was the only player they talked about.
And then last night, when I went over to one of my uncles’ house, I had to take all this crap from them for being a Sharks fan (they live in Newport Beach). Oh, and apparently another one of my uncles lives six houses down from Giguere, and because of that got to take a picture with the Cup. It was a very bittersweet moment.
And finally, as we were driving up 5 tonight, we listened to the Sharks radio that apparently was broadcasting from Sacramento. The static made it sound like there was a train the entire time, and then you could hear some random music in the background (the only sound I recognized was “I’m a Believer”). Oh, and my dad started honking when Clowe scored. It was a very nice moment :)
So now I’m home and ready to watch the Sharks on TV for the first time since the regular season. Yay!
one of my uncles lives six houses down from Giguere
i could have some fun with that

If you’re gonna be so negative you might as well leave this site and stop watching the Sharks
Believe me, I want the sharks to win. I’m still holding out hope. I’ve been a Sharks fan since they became a team. I’m a huge Sharks fan! But losing 2 home games when you are so dominant at home? 0 for 12 on the PP? That isn’t Sharks hockey.
It’s still a 7 game series so I know it isn’t over. I’m just very disappointed, so sorry for feeling negative.

effort? here is my effort to readjust my expectations...
all kinds of effort, but what we saw was exactly what we saw over the past few months. inconsistent play leading to soft goals, inability to execute leading to breakdowns and turnovers, and too many low percentage shots.
the writing has been on the wall for months…
this is the playoff version of what we saw starting in december. this team simply does not have what it takes. do you watch other playoff games? do you notice that other gear this team seems to lack? the culture of this team is bent on losing when it counts.
i just adjusted my expectations and now i can deal with a first round exit.

I just don't agree
I didn’t see soft goals tonite. I saw a couple of “you’re shitting me” goals that no one stops…not Luongo, not Thomas…no one. Nabby looked solid tonite.
The effort by the Sharks tonight was first rate. Sure, there were lapses…there are always going to be lapses..but I didn’t see one player out there tonight that wasn’t going all out 100 percent of the time.
You have to do two things…give Hiller some credit…and you have to just say we got fucked by luck. We shot, and shot, and shot…we crashed the net, the guys dug on the boards all night and won more than the lost….I’m not the least bit happy with the outcome. But I’ll be damned if I am gonna say this is just a product of what the Sharks normally do in the post season.

Nabby giving up soft goals
Makes baby Jesus cry.
It’s not going to happen, but maybe TMc needs to seriously consider starting Brian Boucher in Anaheim.
Cheechoo was far and away the Sharks best player.
The 2nd line was a force as well. Kudos to Little Joe for his faceoff work.
Sharks need to abandon the dump and chase entry into the Ducks zone, and instead have one of Michalek, Pavelski, Boyle, or any other sharks player with wheels to enter the zone instead. They’re constantly being beat out by the Sharks to loose pucks.
Hiller’s playing incredibly calm and composed. The chances were better than game 1, but Sharks are still not getting enough shots from in-between the hashmarks or in front of the crease. Nabby looked shaky in the 3rd period.
I’m really, really worried.
Where hockey injuries in San Diego are thumb blisters from your XBox controller.
Nabby can’t do it all! I think he should still start. He isn’t playing that bad. We need to find a way to beat Hiller. He’s playing solid.
Nabby made some solid stops
But in a 1-1 game, we has to make that stop on Andrew Ebbett. Granted, it was a lucky goal, but it was also from a very low-percentage area.
Where hockey injuries in San Diego are thumb blisters from your XBox controller.
by Will Bulldozer on Apr 19, 2009 10:03 PM PDT up reply actions
I think it turned into a high percentage one because Nabby didn’t know where the puck was until it was too late.
Nabby is really playing well in my opinion.
Marleau and Jumbo need to step up now. We need goals!

well, my memory is shot. i’ve blocked out everything before 2003. that’s how bad that 2002 series stung me.

1. Dave’s an established member around here. I’d advise against that stuff
2.
Can you not be critical of your team without still loving them?
Answer is yes.
However
way to live up to the expectation as the playoff chokersis not.
I think it’s fair. Sorry for feeling that way, but last I remember the Sharks going 0-2 at home was against Dallas.
Will I not root for my team as hard Tuesday? Of course not.
There are 5 more games. I just think they missed an opportunity. That’s all. It’s just good that the Sharks aren’t being critical on themselves. They know they can win and I still have the same amount of faith in them.
I’m just frustrated, that’s all.
I shouldn’t have to worry about offending Dave because he’s an established member. My opinion is just as valuable as his.
I understand you’re frustrated but saying “way to live up to the expectation as the playoff chokers” is not being critical. That’s whining.
As for Dave he’s been around here all season. (No offense, sort of) You just have a mere 75 comments. The ones here when the season started know how things work around here.
Honestly if you’ve been been here long enough I’m pretty sure you’d know Dave’s opinion is quite valued over here.
I think I’m gonna go with the Plank, Ang, and Dave route. Before the playoffs it just us ‘round here (+ a few others to name). There wasn’t any whining or anything. Come playoff time it’s “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE” chat and they’re gone.
It makes you wonder.
I’m out
I really can't be negative about this game
sharks played well. They won all the individual battles. They just can’t score, they’re on the schneid I guess. What are you gonna do, it’s not like they laid an egg
True.
Top line needs to step up though. The second line is playing like the top line should right now. They’ll win Tuesday.
as far as I'm concerned
the second line is the top line, and has been all season

anyone with me
and saying that we will take 2 in anaheim? im just as down as you guys are right now, but we shall overcome. We need some vocal leadership(marleau step up, PLEASE)
marleau HAS been too quiet for my tastes

We won 2 out of 3 from them in the regular season in Anaheim
who’s to say we can’t do that again?
yeah but
that was the regular season, we were also the best team to step foot in an ice rink in the regular season, definetly not in the playoffs
You're right
it won’t be easy, but it’s one of the things that gives me hope. It’s not like the Joe where we can never win
yeah isn't it strange
how so many years in a row, all of the regular season stats we build up completely get inverted in the playoffs? If we were scoring PP goals at the same rate as the regular season, we would have at least 2 more goals. And don’t forget that unstoppable home form, anaheim has now won 3 times in reg at the tank since last time the sharks did. weird bad mojo annually

for some reason this makes me laugh
the headlines about these games on ESPN and stuff are always like
“upstart Ducks STUN the Sharks”
“Ducks take a STUNNING 2-0 lead”
i think it’s funny because is any sharks fan flabbergasted by these losses? Not in the slightest, We’re all so cynical about choking, we were practically expecting it! I dunno somehow this helps me get some humour out of the whole situation
ESPN
doesn’t follow hockey
all they see is an 8 beating a 1 and are like ZOMFG!

I really wasn’t expecting the team to choke this year, which makes this even worse. The series is absolutely not over, but let’s be realistic; how can anyone expect this team to win a Cup when they can’t even get themselves up for the first 2 games of the playoffs, at home, against an arch rival?
The final minute and a half of the game summarized the series pretty well – just unbelievable.
it kinda sucks
you can’t even really say anaheim was in this game can you? every time they scored a goal it was like what? oh. I guess they scored. Oh well, those are the breaks
really
i don’t consider anaheims 2nd and 3rd goals “real goals”, it’s kind of the one’s where you score and you ask yourself “seriously, did that really just happen?”

I'm tired of the eternal optimists
This has always happened.
We are not taking 2 in Anaheim, we may not even take one.
If we can’t even win at home, what makes you guys think we can take two on the road?
It’s deja vu like I said.
Call me a whiner, call me a debbie downer, I don’t give a f—-, but the fact of the matter is is that this is the same team showing up for these playoffs as the last several.
Be real. We suck in the playoffs.
I’d love to be proven wrong, but I’m too real for that.
But we’re choking like dogs on a chicken bone.

here's how i'm looking at it
we are guaranteed 2 more games to watch our favorite hockey team show their stuff. I’d normally be with you jtoj, but I’m tired of worrying about choking. I’m just gonna enjoy the next 2 games, and hopefully a few more after that

Hey guys
Just reading the comments and want to say one thing- everyone’s entitled their opinion, feel free to voice it. First amendment rules. If you disagree with something someone has said to a point where we’re going to get in a shouting match over it, I suggest that you don’t reply. However, it is your right to do so.
Try not to kill each other in here- that’s just a suggestion as well.

yeah, I don't think anyone is trying to kill one another
the Sharks are doing plenty of that for us…
I really wish practices were open
cause I’d like to see if the Sharks offense practices anything but dumping pucks or working the puck to the point and hoping a shot somehow finds it’s way to the net,
haha
i wonder the same thing. The weirdest thing about this season is it’s relaly unclear what happened to the team that was aroudn the first 30 games. For some reason I thought they were saving it up to surprise in the playoffs, but clearly not. I’m curious what was behind that.
I think thats’ the most frustrating thing because we’ve all seen how this team can play and they just seem to refuse to do it again

For the record
I’m not saying anything is over. I understand that it’s a long series. But we all know the history of this team and the questions about their mental toughness. If there’s one Sharks team that can bounce back and go far, it’s this one. But they’re playing a style of hockey right now where they’re giving over a lot of control of their destiny in favor of hopeful long shots and scatterbrained offense/defensive zone play. If they can correct this, then they absolutely can win the series, because Anaheim hasn’t exactly put the screw to the Sharks.
