Like, seriously bro.
Edmonton has been doing their best to avoid the playoffs for the third straight year, and tonight may be their last hurrah. With a home and home against Calgary to end the season, who will most likely be battling with Vancouver for that three seed up until the 82 game mark, their future schedule does not bode well considering the current playoff picture.
This ain't 2006, but anytime we have the chance to atone for that series loss by effectively knocking the Oil out does put a little swing in my step*.
* It's likely that's due to the celebratory drink consumed afterwards, but now you're just being a smart ass.
I've done a little bit of scouting the last week or so, and this is what I can tell you about Edmonton- they aren't skating well right now, and God forbid they win a possession battle off a dump in. Roloson is the only reason this team is afloat. Their only win in their last six? A 51 save performance against Anaheim. No matter which way you cut it, a playoff contender at this stage in the year should never force their goaltender to make 51 saves in a night. It's borderline obscene.
Word on the street is that the magic number is nine points to clinch the one seed, but it's actually ten points*. Why in the world sjsharks.com forgot to mention Boston in the race for the Presidents' Trophy is beyond me. Possibly it's a classic case of an anti East Coast bias mojo flying shin kick to the kidneys?
Eh. Weak.
*[Update 3:54 PM]: Sjsharks.com has corrected their omission of Boston.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-2. Goals by Big Joe, Boyle, Cheech, and Michalek.
Go Sharks.

My Prediction
I say Sharks win 4-1 with goals from Little Joe, Seto, Michalek, and Moen. One on EN. Big Joe with another 2 point game.

I say we win 5-1 with Little Joe, Big Joe and Blake each having 3 pts
Gooch has two goal and Blake gets the GW PP in the first per.
And if it turns out like this I am heading to vegas!

Magic Number
Word on the street is that the magic number is nine points to clinch the one seed, but it’s actually ten points. Why in the world sjsharks.com forgot to mention Boston in the race for the Presidents’ Trophy is beyond me.
Don’t we hold the tiebreaker if we both ended up with 120 points, since we won our one and only head-to-head?
by Swift Kick in the Goc on Apr 2, 2009 1:29 PM PDT reply actions
Ah, you might be right Sir Goc Kick. But what if Boston wins out (giving them 120 points) and we go 3-0-3 the rest of the year (giving us 120 points). I was under the assumption wins were the first tiebreaker.
Probably should have researched that before I posted. I’m off to grab some lunch, but hopefully someone finds the solution to this dilemma. A formal apology might have to be issued. Then again, them not mentioning Boston at all was in bad form, at least in my opinion.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
2. The greater number of games won.
3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any “odd” games, shall be used to determine the standing.
4. The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.

You’re right… the number of wins is used before head-to-head in tiebreaker. Magic number should be 10, unless we’re missing something.
by Swift Kick in the Goc on Apr 2, 2009 1:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Am I missing something?
Six games remain in the race for the Presidents’ Trophy between San Jose, Detroit, and Boston and the Sharks are sitting in the pole position with a three point cushion. The magic points number is down to single digits. Nine points by the Sharks will clinch the top spot in the Western Conference no matter what the Red Wings do.
Ten points will clinch the Presidents’ Trophy for San Jose.
—The sjsharks.com article Mr. Plank linked to.
That both mentions the Bruins and says the President’s Trophy magic number is 10…has that article changed since you read it?

—Swift Kick in the Goc
We have 50 wins, the Bruins (and Red Wings) have 49.
In my evaluation of the situation: If Boston runs the table and we go 3-0-3 (both ending up w/ 120 points), they would have more wins (55 compared to our 53) and thus win the tie breaker. If we ended up w/ the same number of points and wins (way to lazy to do the math to figure out if/how that is possible), then the tie breaker would skip head-to-head since we only played them once and go to the 4th tie breaker: goal differential (which I’m also way to lazy to look up).
Magic numbers are 10 for Presidents’, and 9 for Conference. (which the Sharks’ article now? says)
Does that sound right?

Hahaha, straight up they did not have that last night when I was writing the gameday article. Maybe they read Fear The Fin? That would be so cool.

I like how this is the ONE CSN+ game I could have seen on my own tv this season and it gets switched to CSNBA. That’s not a complaint, it just amuses me.
(btw, digital kinda sucks. Latency when changes channels is lame. Also, holy compression artifacts batman!)

Latency when changes channels is lame.
Oh, you’ve experienced the joy that is Comcast’s cable boxes as well? That slow channel changes (which is especially evident if you switch from a HD channel to a standard def one, or vice versa) are just many of my annoyances with the thing. The software on the boxes hasn’t been updated in years, either.
Also, holy compression artifacts batman!
Are you talking about the HD channels? Comcast compresses most of them so they can make room for other HD channels, and it’s pretty noticable. They have a few exceptions to HD channel compression, though, one of which is CSNBA-HD.
Bay Area born and bred.
No
we don’t get HD and ONLY switched to digital because comcast forced us to. Were it not for my desire to watch playoff hockey from a reliable source, we’d no longer have cable service.
If you watch your regular digital channels, you will see lots of lovely junk hanging around where they don’t think people will see it. Yay! They’re super super super compressed. The joys of technology. I can’t believe I’m paying for this, but, I am. A sucker is me.

Bad, bad call
Pavs looked like he was about to fall. The other guys stick went down than up hitting Pavs in the face, right underneath the visor. Pavs went down in pain. got called for diving
Of course not.
Cause if it was a high stick, it couldn’t be a dive. I would have been fine with that call. Would have just proven how stupid the ref is.

But WTF is up with Pavelski getting bullshit calls? And not just random hooking penalties, but ones that make the refs do more work – (phantom) headbutts are looked at by the league, and diving requires some paperwork (hence the lack of those penalties being called). And yet Pavelski gets called for both while doing neither?
Coincidentally, the linesman Mike Cyvik (or however his name is spelled) was in for both games. He must have it out for Pavs or something.

Just a few notes
Since I have my French homework to do.
The game felt sort of weird. Like, I was watching the Sharks, and I knew the team and the tendencies, but it felt like I didn’t know the team. Completely contradictory, but it was like I was watching an entirely different team. So it took awhile to get rid of that odd feeling.
Uhhh, special teams were okay, I guess. Really, nothing stood out to me as “great” (except for Pavelski on faceoffs – winning 65% of the draws, despite the refs and linesmen all ganging up on him). Nabokov was good, but not in Super Nabby mode (a lot of the shots were right to his chest, and if he had the positioning he was pretty much set). The post on the Sharks defend twice side? Amazing. Vezina-quality performance, for sure. The Cheechoo goal was pretty sweet too.
If you don’t like to hear long, drawn-out rants on refs, please stop reading now. Since that’s what I’m going to get into from here on out.
Now, I haven’t criticized officiating in quite a while; partially because the refs have called consistently, and I saw no reason to complain about consistency. But this game was horribly reffed, both from a consistency standpoint and what they were calling.
Dwayne. Fucking. Roloson. Pushes the net off its moorings, no call. Hooks his leg into JR’s when JR is a foot out of the crease and makes himself fall over? Goalie interference for Roenick. LaRue and Lee (the two refs) must have gotten something from Roloson to let him dictate the penalties called. True, he later got called for delay of game when the puck went over the glass on a slightly iffy call (I’ll give the Oilers that), but still. He was the one that should have gotten the diving penalty.
Which brings me to my next point – Joe Pavelski. The guy, up until a certain Dallas game in March, was a Lady Byng type of guy. 18 PIMs in total after 50 or so games. Then comes this guy, Mike Cvik. Single-handedly is responsible for Pavelski’s doubling of PIMs in one game due to a completely blown call on a headbutt. And when I say completely blown, I mean that this guy must have been on hallucinogens, because there was no headbutt, nor an attempt to headbutt, nor any motion that was in any way similar to the motions that constitute a headbutt. Fast-forward to tonights game – once again, Mike Cvik is on the ice. Pavelski is skating past the blue line with the puck, gets tripped by Kotalik, and then gets high sticked in the face while going down. So, Pavelski draws 4 minutes of penalties right? Nope. He gets a penalty. For diving. Nevermind that he was tripped and then hit in the face by a stick in one swift motion, Pavelski must be diving. The weird part is that those two penalties – headbutt and diving – almost never get called.
Oh, and then the refs’ collective responses after they blew the high stick/diving call? They decide that Pavelski whines too much, and refuses to call any of the penalties that are being drawn by Pavs – another high stick to the face? Eh, too bad. Tripping? Yawn. But heaven forbid Moen or Murray do anything to the Oilers! (That said, those were penalties and should be called – I just would have liked to see them go the other way). The reffing was just a joke in this game.

Nice rant lady
Dwayne. Fucking. Roloson. Pushes the net off its moorings, no call.
What’s that old saying about history repeating itself? It’s something like that right?
My gut tells me it might apply here.
