Survivin'
Many citizens of this great nation will be making the rounds tomorrow. On talk radio they will blast the Sharks heart. Blogs and mainstream media outlets alike will trot out the convenient lines of playoff choke artistry in order to cater to the public. Fans will state it's the same ol' team, the same ol' team that has broken down in the playoffs time and time again.
To hell with em'.
At the crux of the playoffs remains one fact, and one fact alone- four wins gets you the series. Not two on the road. Not two brilliant games from your goaltender. Not two games where you instilled a little doubt into a team that has "crumbled" under that pressure before.
It's about survivin. And that begins tomorrow.
Go Sharks.

After a good nights sleep, I’m excited for next game! Lets show them who they are messing with!
Go Sharks
Oh
And Lost is the best show ever!! Maybe not ever, but it’s my favorite show right now.

in case you didn’t catch it in the last thread, here’s some Power Play stats on Ehrhoff.
So take a look at the Goals for on ice per 60 mins

What they won't talk about before Game 3
While yes, the Sharks dropped another one mainly on Hiller playing out of his mind, you probably wont hear about the improvements the Sharks made between Games 1 and 2. They came out hitting hard, Clowe was taking down guys left and right before he scored and Cheechoo was being a better Pronger to Pronger than Pronger was to the rest of the team. You should have heard the Ducks feed (I’m in So Cal so I can only watch on FSN Prime Ticket) and how they were demonizing Cheech because he was getting in Pronger’s face so much. The Sharks, to me at least, showed a lot more grit in that last game especially when they started going off in the second period, we even had some great chances in the first. My roommate (who’s a Ducks fan) and I agreed that if it wasn’t for Hiller, the score would have easily been 3-1 Sharks if not worse.
Bottom line is that the Sharks made a lot of improvements in Game 2, and they’ll only make more in Game 3. The powerplay will finally break out and score a few, and Hiller won’t remain the indomitable force that he currently is.

more observations from me
anyone notice that Joe Thornton’s quotation about being the “best team in hockey” is the moment that turned everyone against him. It seems like one of those moments destined to go own in infamy, like “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers” or something
Ashamed...
This has nothing to do with how the Sharks are playing. Instead I would just like to voice my disgust of my recent trip to the Tank. I don’t have much money, so my chances of making a game appearance is slim. However when I do scrounge up enough money to go, I have always rocked seats near the top of the stands and always sat around fans who clapped and cheered for the team.
I was able to purchase a ticket for a front row seat in the upper bowl, for Sunday’s game. Around me sat season ticket holders, some of who I was warned aren’t the nicest of people. After having my drink kicked over by a man who seemed to care less at what he did ($11 beer a**hole) and yelled at by his wife because Row 1 was “their row” and I didn’t belong there, I quickly realized how rude these people really were.
I guess when you have enough money for season tickets, you forget how to be a civil human being. And apparently you forget how to cheer for a team you are “fans” of. If you are a season ticket holder and don’t know how to clap along to the basic Sharkie cheers… you might want to rethink buying season tickets for next year.
I can truthfully say that not one person around me clapped, yelled, cheered, or quite possibly breathed during the game. The only audible noises came from a couple people clapping when we scored. But even then, my girlfriend, sitting in row 3 behind me, spotted many people sitting quietly during the goals, and some, playing on their phones and videogames. She even mentioned to me that she was ridiculed by “fans” behind her for cheering.
If you choose to not be a “7th player” on the team and bring the loudness that makes our stadium one of the hardest to play in… go home and watch it quietly on your couch.
Pathetic!
GO SHARKS!!!!!!

it was a disgrace… I tried to be as loud as possible, but they were totally bringing me down with them.

227?
I always thought that section was decently lively. Or was it 229?
Sorry your experienced sucked so bad though. :(
I can really only vouch for the first 3 rows… when I looked up behind them it seemed like there were a lot of people cheering.

Not all the fans are like that
I think you were just unlucky.
Nothing stops me cheering. Ever. Just be yourself, and sorry for your poor experience.
I sat in 228 most of the year
*not a season ticket holder
but I did find sections 227 and 228 to be grumpy. You were unlucky with your section. Section 208 and 203 have been good to us consistently over the seasons and I’m happy to be back in 203 for the playoffs.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Grumpy is a good way of putting it… I’ll remember to look for tickets in section 203. I’ve been in 208 as well and enjoyed myself.

we called section 228 “section 22lame”, so, that should tell you something.

I wonder that sometimes myself
205 has some crazy yelling women in it. Crazy! They tried to pick fights with people who told them to shush.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Now those are Sharks Fans...
and true 7th players! I totally understand watching your language as to not offend kids around… but hushing someone? You’re at a friggin Sharks hockey game, a playoff game especially, and you’re hushing someone? People should be thrown out for not meeting a noise requirement. Just an idea

Actually the people telling them to shut it were in the right. I was there and believe me, the crazy people needed to shut up. They were BITTER fans. It wasn’t cheering, it was jeering. All game. All of it. 60 minutes of solid whining. Not my style. Not at all. No clapping, no nothing. You got the impression that the Sharks could have won by 10 goals ans they’d still be ragging them about how terrible they were.
It’s not at all like when the gentlemen next to Mina complained on opening day that Mina and I were talking to much. Not at alllll like that.

Sounds like

not entirely
that Ratto quote annoyed me enough to post in response

ohhh...
Yea, whining is never tolerated. Sure a groan is acceptable ever now and again, but noise should be limited to cheers and chants.
I get a little distracted when people are talking, so I can kind of understand, but jesus… get over it, people are going to talk.

I fucking hate that
We were at Game 5 vs. Dallas last year and there was this whiny toolbag sitting next to us who would not stop complaining, for the entire game. When the Sharks won in it overtime he was jumping up and down, ecstatic. He turned to high five us and my wife and I looked at him like he was effing retarded. If you’re gonna support your team, do it for the whole 60 minutes, jerkbag.
yea thats pretty gay…agreed

Roger that,
if it weren’t for Hiller and a few goalposts Sharks would be up 2-0. But to quote Ross McKeon over on Yahoo!,
That is the bottom line in the playoffs. There are no style points, no one asks how you get it done. It’s all about surviving to see another day.. We’ve shown our ability to bounce back after some tough defeats throughout the year, and you have to know that the 8 cup rings in the locker room are none too pleased with these results. I’m looking for a strong performance in game 3 (and a clean-shaven face for myself; I guess the playoff beard was not in the cards this postseason). Go Sharks
They should move Cheech to line one for the next game
"AN, Reducing Work Productivity since 2003", connie mack 11/06/08
It's been done
I agree the Sharks have played well enough to win and that it is still very possible.
3 years ago in 2006, Carolina lost their first two at home to Montreal in the first round and came back to win 4 straight and the Stanley Cup
3 playoffs before that in 2002, Detroit (also won the Presidents Cup) lost their first two at home to Vancouver, came back to win the next four and the Stanley Cup.

I read that 24.2% of the 66 teams that have been down 2 as the higher seed have won (WTC)

Why does our PP always struggle in the playoffs?
Every year we’re in the top 5 or so in PP%, but we consistently struggle with it in the postseason. This may have been discussed elsewhere on this blog, but it’s something that boggles my mind that we’re so abysmal every year on the PP in the playoffs.
Just a thought
Maybe the other teams really make a concerted effort to figure out how to shut it down. Which, in many cases, is done in the neutral zone, not the attacking zone
Aye- the Ducks have been jamming up the neutral zone all series. Credit Carlyle with that. The only guy who has been able to carry the puck in consistently has been Boyle.
Also, Marchant has been something like 80% from the dot on the PK. That’s absolutely brutal.
Fear The Fin: Where The Past Is Overrated
You said it
Marchant is destroying us in the faceoff circle. Hard to setup up the PP when you can’t get the puck to begin with.
+10 to you sir
That’s exactly why Joe and Patty are not the superstars they are in the regular season. I’m not saying they couldn’t use a little boost to their game…but when they match up against the other teams top line, and they are targeted like they are, they are not going to be as good as before. Everyone says that Patty and Joe need to step up. I say, everyone else needs to step up. And a lot of them have.

Lutefisk! Here Kitty, Kitty...
Game 2 smelt like a good hockey game. Team Teal did show up to play for almost half of the time.
Several guys recently back from IR finally showed some spark, and there was even a moment or two where in the 3rd period Cap’t Matty actually skated with speed. Sad to recently read that Cheech is on the rumored trading block.
The table is now set for “Revenge of the Lutefisk”. Will it be more shark fin soup to eat or will I get a bowl of curried duck with egg noodle.
I vote for DUCK

So
I didn’t post again after the game because I knew I would be one of those “ZOMG THE SKY IS FALLING” people (going down 2-0 in the series after driving for 8 hours and having very little sleep over the past few days and having to do lots of homework isn’t exactly the most positive of situations).
But what I saw from the game (and, I must say, I was only able to watch maybe 10 minutes, during which the Ducks scored twice), there was a lot of work out there by Cheechoo, Setoguchi, Pavelski, and Boyle. Some bad brainfarts by Clowe, and only a few times when Marleau really turned it on (the instance when both Seto and Patty hit the same guy stands out to me). Thornton was kind of listless out there, and Nabby has got to turn his super-goalie mode on. The turnovers and special teams have killed any chance of winning (0-for-12 is unacceptable, I really don’t care what the circumstances are).
Oh, and a good thing? They scored on even strength, for the first time in I don’t know how many weeks. Yay!
2 even strength goals none the less!
.. and that might’ve been Cheech’s best goal of the season, I just wish the rest of the team would’ve responded. Not to mention the fans. I know we were all edgy in the arena (probably the quietest playoff game I’ve been to), but even after Cheech scored, the fans went back to near silence and only made noise for a few seconds when prompted by the PA system. Also, what was up with the arena not giving out towels or pom-poms or anything?
Don’t know if this was posted, but Mitchell took part in the warm up skate.
nice
and on an off topic note, that show makes my head hurt

Got the speed, still need the coaching
Really enjoyed watching the Sharks step up their game. I also really enjoy how much they are NOT whining about the breaks or the cheating. I’ve watched the Red Wings since Yzerman’s first year, and see some resemblance to the 1997 team that finally broke through all the years of playoff frustration. I think they’re going to be fine.
Even thought they’re working hard, the Sharkies still need a better game plan. It really is the Jonas Hiller show right now. The guy’s pads are monsters. So the coaches better not be getting any sleep until they see something helpful in the video about the kid. The Ducks defence wil wear down eventually if the Sharks keep up the pressure (night after night of blocked shots is heck on the ankles!). We just need to get some new tactics against Hiller.
. . . and speaking of better coaching, I mean the power play too. That must improve – especially against the Ducks. They must pay for their penalties. Most of their D is too old to skate with the Sharks, but until the Sharks get some PP teeth, they can compensate with their “experienced playoff style” (i.e., hooking, interference, etc.).
