A few bullet points because Black Label has treated me well tonight. Not all inclusive obviously (TCY will be here later for that), but a couple things I would like to touch on.
The Ugly
- Clear the puck up the boards. Seto and Pavs had two lackadasical passes to center ice that burned us for goals. That being said, the feed to the center is instrumental to getting the breakout humming. I trust the players will make the right decisions in game four.
The Bad
- The last eight minutes we needed more pressure on the forecheck. Throwing one guy in is fine, as long as that man disrupts the Ducks breakout. It didn't happen, and Anaheim was able to move the puck up the ice quickly. My friend and I were saying it looked like Ron Wilson hockey out there at one point. More focus on putting the body on the puck carrier, because that support defenseman is going to cheating up the ice.
- Anaheim is doing an excellent job of finding that soft spot in the center of our defense. I like the pressure we put on their defensemen (Whitney, Niedermayer, and Pronger all have boomers), but wouldn't mind if the puck-side forward collapsed a bit from time to time. Pressure the majority of shifts, keep them honest and ease off on the pedal every now and then.
The Good
- Dan Boyle. Moving on...
- Torrey Mitchell was a workhorse tonight. Between winning puck battles and getting behind Anaheim's defense with his skating ability, he did a lot of positive things. I'd have to dig through some comments I made to find a link, but over the course of the past month I have said something to the effect of, "Throwing Mitchell out there with no game experience would be a mistake." Dead wrong, Plank. Dead wrong.
- Douglas Murray is having himself one whale of a postseason thus far, but let's be clear- Carlyle will take a scrap with Parros every time. It didn't burn us then, but I wouldn't mind him refraining from dancing with El Mustachio the rest of this series. Since we're on the defense I would like to note that it seemed Blake did a lot better job of getting his shots through from the point. Will take a look at the quantitative totals later and see if that is the case.
- Anytime Patrick Marleau gets on the scoreboard, you can feel the team get behind him. He's been relatively quiet for the first forty in nearly every tilt, but has flourished in the last twenty. Let's see more of that all game Captain.
- Ryane Clowe from the dot. Everytime his centerman got booted, Ryane came in and won a huge draw. What's so remarkable about that is usually the "booted team" will lose the draw due to the fact that if they jump they get nailed with a penalty. Kudos.
- Everyone was skating tonight, and like Randy Hahn stated before this series, the way to beat the Ducks is with speed. Skating through the neutral zone was a whole lot better, and even when they dumped it in far-side, they were getting to those pucks because of it.
- Evgeni Nabokov absolutely turned it on in the third period. You can say what you want about the "softies" he's given up this series (including the first goal tonight), but he reached another level when the game was on the line.
- The powerplay.
- The win.
Not too high, not too low. Do it.
Go Sharks.

Good stuff.
Tighten up the d and watch the turn overs and things’ll actually be looking better. And something already sweet will get even more awesome.
It takes a big man to cry and it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man. -Jamie Baker
I agree with so much of this
I even mentioned much of it during the game to my friends. Especially Clowe’s performance when (most of the time pavs) got booted. Especially his last faceoff in our zone on the pk.
As far as the puck side forward collapsing early, I disagree. IMO if you rush that guy he’s left with few good options. Vlasic pulled up way early in chasing the puck to our defensive blueline, giving a duck defenseman (whoever it was) room and speed that he used to go far side on Nabby for their third goal.
I love and hate disagreeing with you Plank. It’s certainly not a battle I’m likely to win often.
In defense for Plank
the third goal was a defensive lapse in which pavs put the puck ahead of vlasic in attempt of breaking out through the middle which ended up in the back of the net. It wasn’t on the rush where we stepped back and let them skate into our zone.
nice to see you here alfred
and yea you’re right, a botched breakout is not the same as defending a rush.
this is why i shouldnt disagree.
Turnovers
killed us. We need to clean that up but going up the boards all the time like you said plank slows down our breakout. We just need to be smarter when going through the middle. snapping passes to the slot while on your buttocks doesn’t sound smart to me AhempavsAhem. Every giveaway we had seemed to end up in chances if not goals.. but we played real well tonight. Mitchell in his sub 7 minutes of playing time was on fire. loved it and loved the win.
YES!!!!!
Does anyone have any tranquilizers?
The ducks really know how to punish your mistakes! Those other two goals that Nabby didnt score were the kinds of goals we need to score.
well two of the goals were straight early christmas gifts from our fowards trying to clear the zone. The other only goal was banked and kicked in by nabs. Thats the only one i feel the ducks “earned”
yes, but do you have any tranquilizers?
And that’s what I’m saying. The ducks punished the sharks mistakes on all of the goals except the one he kicked in himself.
Sharks look great when they turn it on
But they still look like they lack a captain at the wheel. Boyle, however, played that role when he was on the ice. The Sharks played so much calmer on and off the puck in the beginning of the season. As Plank mentioned, they looked like a Ron Wilson coached team with nerves when playing the puck. So many time they had at least another second, but instead played hot-potato. Overall, they looked like a very raw version of the Sharks in the 1st half – but they still overwhelmed the Ducks when that raw energy clicked.
A win’s a win and the Sharks play much better with some confidence. Let’s get game 4 and makes this a 3-game series. Go Sharks go!
Good Stuff Plank
Interesting viewpoint from the 15 year old daughter…….I went into her room in the 3rd Period and said “so, what do you think tonight”? And her one and only response was “they’re moving their feet tonight, and they look WAYYYYY better because of it”…..
I’m proud to call her my daughter………
GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!
Consistent Imrprovements
The Sharks made strides from Game 1 to Game 2, and carried that into making even more strides in Game 3. We were finally able to break out the power play and hammer it in. Marleau got on the board. Clowe and Murray were stellar. Hiller was no longer the immovable object in net. Sharks showed a lot of grit, had a lot of hits and hell, we finally got a fight in this series. Bring on game 4.
Just got finished with watching the whole game on DVR.
My take -
Positives:
Mitchell! Nuff said. He had a good game – speedy on forechecks and what not. Seeing him on the PK soon?
Man, brilliant game by Boyle. He was everywhere. Maybe bringing some of that Tampa Bay down 2-0 only to win 4 straight and take the series mojo over here.
Blake’s also continued the shots from the point, which has worked well. It worked pretty darn well game 2, and worked again game 3.
PP finally clicked. I think first period PP goal was the first one where I saw MAJOR zone control by the Sharks all series long. And Marleau with the game winner! Marleau had a really solid game today.
Nabby was huge in the third. You could actually see him pick up his game at points in the second, where the defense let him down, and he just shut down Marchant, Miller, Niedermayer and what not. Pronger’s goal was off the bad turnover, so I can’t really blame Nabby for that.
Murray’s a monster. Ivy league fight’s kinda hilarious.
Negatives:
Big Joe seemed to be completely missing. While in the zone, he was passing much more to Anaheim players, rather than looking for the easier outlet pass to get the point shot, which was really working. He was cutting through the middle of the zone, rather than the crease where players were at, or to the near point. Two giveaways on the statsheet. Course, that’s what a playmaker’s supposed to do, pass, but he’s kinda lost his touch this last few games?
Pavs turnover was kinda sad. He was falling all over the ice today, either that or caught out of position going after a hit or something. Clowe’s there for backup along the boards though, I don’t think he’s lost a puck battle along the boards yet.
I keep hearing Mike Brown’s and Francois Beauchemin’s names come up either defensively or offensively. Beauchemin with 3 blocked shots tonight. Brown’s name just keeps coming up, even with his limited minutes.
Summary:
Maybe I should stay away from FTF, I think I’m the bad luck.
I’m 0-2 in playoff games on FTF, I believe 6-14 all time when I’m on. Too tired to check my stats when I’m not on FTF since my join date.
I’ll test this theory again Thursday. Sacrifice for the greater good.
YAY MITCHELL!
now that he’s back we can throw out all four lines and expect quality ice time :DDDDDDDD

Nabby was solid in the 3rd
The first and second goals were the kinds of goals i’m sure he’d like to have back. That 3rd goal was an unstoppable shot off a very bad turnover by Pavelski. But as said above, when the game was on the line, he made some solid stops. I see his performance only getting better from here on out.
Dan Boyle was the two headed monster on offense and defense. And way to draw the hooking penalty on Perry in the defensive zone that lead to Marleau GW. Blake and Vlasic great games as well.
I’m okay with Ehrhoff playing fewer minutes. He looked like he was having trouble containing Anaheims speed at times.
I saw things differently with the last 8 minutes of the game after Marleau’s GW. Sharks changed the game plan up. Purposefully clogged up the neutral zone (I thought successfully). Lots of active sticks breaking up passes. Nothing too fancy. When the Sharks got it to the red line, they dumped it and changed lines. It worked beautifully. Anaheim didn’t get very many chances at the Marleau GW, and the shots on goal were smothered by Nabby.
Guys who still need to get going: Michalek, Pavelski, Seto. I thought Thornton had his best game yet of the series, but he still looks a bit off.
Doug Murray is all that is right with the hockey world.
I was sooo pumped to see Torrey Mitchell flying out on the ice. I forget how much the Sharks miss him on the PK and 3rd line.
Sharks made better shot selection on Hiller. I wouldn’t say we’ve completely figured out Hiller, but we’ve taken the first big step which is to remove this notion that he is somehow the second-coming of Patrick Roy.
Scott Nieds had an awful game. I don’t expect two in a row, so the Sharks need to tighten up and prevent those turnovers and giveaways.
Bobby Ryan is going to be scary good in 2-3 years. But Big Joe got under his skin tonight, and Ryan’s playoff inexperience showed emphatically in the 3rd period. If we can continue to get under his skin, we can render him very ineffective for the rest of the series.
Glad to see so many Sharks fans in Anaheim. Too bad the building still had empty seats for a playoff game.
All in all. A very exciting hockey game. Great to see the Sharks win. Let’s carry the momentum to even the series on Thursday. We can do it!

Parros went to Princeton?
HAHAHA. As a fellow Cornell Alum, I loved seeing Murray connect with those ham fists. Go Big Red!
Looked great tonight
Best they have looked in two months. That was the best playoff game I’ve seen so far. I think I’m going to order a Boyle jersey today!
GO SHARKS!
Honda Center
My 1st away game,a playoff game!!! Okay might be a biased but Duck fans suck compared to Sharks fans, there arena is VERY nice but it wasnt sold out and wasnt even half as noisy as the Tank! One more quick comment,as we were watching warm ups (and there were a TON of Sharks fans) a couple of us were calling out J.R.s name and as cool as he can be he turns around and gives us a wink and a nod as if to say “dont worry we got this” it was incredible to me I truly hope the Sharks can get the cup he deserves it more than anyone!!
