Today is one of those days where you wake up and get the jitters until about six, six thirty- then you realize what's coming is inevitable. The train's boring full steam right at your sternum and you just stand there and watch it hit you, and...nothing. The team is prepared, the lineups are set, there's no time to think about what may happen, only time to wait and see what does. You feel that adrenaline but learn to control it, harness it. It's no longer an enemy. It's an emotional asset.
It's funny how much an object weighing a mere six ounces can lead you to places you never knew existed. Six ounces. Let that sink in a bit. Six freaking ounces. What else weighs six ounces that has the potential to make people lose their damn minds? I see Willie Nelson raising his hand in the corner over there, but he's wrong. That's on a strictly personal level. No one goes nuts when he's doing his thing in the trailer before a big set.
Break down game three in your head. Cut through all the noise. The egregious turnovers, Boyle's performance, Hiller looking finally looking like a human being, Murray blowing up Selanne, the powerplay getting on the board. What does it come down to?
Speed. Bet your sons and daughters college fund that Carlyle is going to be doing his damndest to jam four black jerseys in the neutral zone, restrict that flow. He's going to preach the casual interference Anaheim is so good at, keep the game at a manageable pace. Have Hiller ice the puck a lot, hope Marchant gets those defensive draws going again. Muck it up in front of the net after the whistle. Keep it tight and try to get a goal or two late. An all-out firefight is out of the question. Tonight is about the trenches, about winning those puck possession battles just like game three, about skating in the neutral zone and beating the man to the dump-in, about having that same speed allow the support to gain early positioning, about generating cycle after cycle after cycle.
The NHL Playoffs, man. Nothing like it in the world.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Clowe, Pavelski, and Thornton. One comes on the powerplay, one comes off the backboards where it's subsequently roofed.
Go Sharks.

After watching the Chicago/Calgary shootout last night
I’m excited for this game to start. I have a good feeling about tonight.
Go Sharks!
Bounty?
I think Murray should go on the radio before the game and put a bounty on Teemu’s head. A hundred bucks for the first Shark that lays out Selanne at mid-ice. Get the ambulance ready!
If that's the case,
we should call up the Hanson Brothers

I’d love a goal from Pavs.
Last thread, when I said that about Clowe, he scored… and the Sharks won.
Go Sharks.
Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!
he
does have a lethal shot, although i don’t know the stats, it doesn’t seem like a lot of his shots have gotten on net, that or he hasn’t shot much, likewise I have been disappointed with marleau not shooting either, but he does have more responsibilities now.
I don't like you Detroit.

This pre-game piece spoke to my soul...
I woke up this morning with the jitters…have now been at work for almost 2 hours, and have accomplished nothing. I can’t focus on some meaningless tasks when there’s epic battle about to be waged tonight!
Just 9 1/2 more hours…just 9 1/2 more hours…

Luckily (or unluckily, as I could use the distraction) I don’t have much to do today. Mostly just sit here and talk to people online, be it through message boards or instant messaging.

I’m just annoyed all the ticket traders log on and buy seats to scalp. I’m not paying 115 per ticket to sit where I know it costs much much less. 94 bucks a pop on stub hub.
lame
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
same here … I was ready before 10am at ticketmaster to click the link .. 10am came … counted to 10 … and clicked … and voila!! … didn’t care where it gave me just took what I could get. I hate hate hate scalpers with a passion I can’t even explain. bastards, the whole lot of them.

by ang6666 on Apr 23, 2009 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions
you can only buy 2, but that doesn’t mean the scalpers don’t work the system. 145 bucks for seats in 206. yeah right!
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
I don’t mind a minor mark up, but when you double the cost of a ticket or more, that’s just annoying. I know it’s not 115 per ticket in rows 13 and higher in the upper bowl. That’s absurd. But people will pay it. I’m just not going to be one of those people.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Yea, the ones I got were 60 face.

As a sharks Pack holder
The Sharks sent me a letter saying I had priority and could get seats before the rest of the hoi polloi.
My seats during the regular season were $19. Playoff price? $34! Not bad!
How anyone can charge $100 for those kind of seats is beyond me! But then again, the tickets will only sell for what the market will pay.
I disagree actually … if you have no intention of going, just intend to buy to rip someone off – it makes you a goddamn mother fucking jackass of the worst kind. period.

Forgot completely this morning. Oh well, not like I could currently afford them.
Maybe I’ll catch a 2nd round game.
Likely won't make it Saturday
due to needing to be on standby if my in-laws need us (dad-in-law came up with bum leg so may need to perform chauffeur duties). We’ll have a quiet time in a nice hotel, maybe find a good place to go watch the game if the folks don’t need us…
8.5 hours to go..
Is the game on CSN tonight? I’d like to hear what Drew and Randy have to say about the last game.
It's at the top of the page, below the logos, dude.
I has good practice. Mike Grier keep shooting puck at me, and my confidence boosted very more. - "Evgeni Nabokov"
I have a dream (sorry, MLK)
I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this team will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that not all teams are created equal.”
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day Silicon Valley shall be exalted, every other hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places like Detroit will be made plain, and the crooked places like Anaheim will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the teal fold. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our fanbase into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to applaud together, to struggle together, to drink together, to stand up for the Sharks together, knowing that we will have the Stanley Cup one day.

Sniff
Amen.
Also, I would like to add to that:
“One day, your playoff beard won’t be itchy, because the glory of winning the cup has taken away all of your pain”
Speaking of which, how is everyone doing with their playoff growth?
Not a beard
but little stubbles..haha im 20 and im asian but im sticking with it. It just looks straight up dirty right now. Contemplated going clean after game 2 to change things up but kept it and hoping it brings us another win.
Do you ladies feel left out by the playoff beard thing?
I know I would if I were a lady.
I’d probably do something awesome instead of a playoff beard like High 5 a stranger at least once a day during the playoffs.
Nope. If I started feeling left out of things that in this world were more male-oriented, I might as well just locked myself indoors. Instead I sit back and think how nice it would feel to have that stubble … uh … I’ll stop there … :)

I think it must nearly be time for a playoff growth picture thread (That way we dont isolate those people who have hair growth that does not resemble a real beard)
Mine is growing in nice and red! I dont have red hair, but being a perfect example of coming from a country which has centuries of history of being invaded by everyone from the Vikings to the Romans, I’m a bit of a mutt!! So the curtains dont match the drapes, so to speak.

I think I'd still like to see Cheechoo on the top line...
Mitchell is fast, but he’s still gotta get his legs under him and his hands up to speed. Put Mitchell on Marleau’s line, and you have some speed there! But, whatever happens, this team should be talented enough to score goals no matter what the line combinations are. They just need to play their game. It’ll be all good!

Just like Howard Hughes. So the moral of the story is, don’t go crazy until you’re rich. Or something like that.

Seriously
He was so good in the 70s/80s, what with American Graffiti, Star Wars (original trilogy, of course), and Indiana Jones screenplay/character-wise. And on the technical aspect as well, with THX, initiating the drive for great special effects, and funding a branch in Lucasfilm/ILM that has eventually transformed into a little movie studio called Pixar.
But now… The prequel trilogy sucked, and “nuked the fridge” has become an alternate version of jumping the shark. Special effects are doing well, though, so I guess he’s not totally crazy.
Once I heard the horrid Russian accent, I knew what we were in for. But the fridge thing was…well, it just was. After that I couldn’t understand why anyone had a hard time with the aliens. Of the two, the crystal skull ETs were more believable.

I’d like to see Mitchell and Cheech switched. Give Jumbo plenty of targets and match up Marleau-Mitchell-Moen against the Getzlaf line.
mitchell is just a much better fit on that line,
like mcclellan has said cheech got demoted because he doesn’t have enough speed, I concur
I don't like you Detroit.
Might as well try em..
Basically whoever can create some space and get open for Jumbo to receive those amazing passes. Seto is a great choice though, he “pulls trigger” every chance he gets.
I'm at work and don't have time to read all of these posts...
so i may be behind the times. However WTC update shows Mitchell with Seto and Thornton.
And anyone read Ruso’s blog, paralleling Worcester sharks playoff to ours. Creepy coincidences! And to think, they won game four 6-0!

i'm sure idunno will disagree,

I don't like you Detroit.
I just dug up some stats (pregame helped me) and Murray played 18 minutes last game and 12 minutes on game 2 so it wasn’t too bad.
And I somewhat disagree with hoping for no fights. I don’t want a dumb fight started by a Shark (you know, by a skill player like Ryane Clowe, or a “instigator fight”) but I didn’t mind Murray’s fight because he was defending himself. If Pronger elbows little Pavelski I wouldn’t mind anybody beating him up.
Seeing the Sharks don’t have a player whose sole role is an enforcer I wouldn’t want to see a “staged-fight” (it killed me saying that).

Mitchell is amazing
Already in this game there was one scoring chance that he generated all by himself – hit one Duck in one corner and knocked the puck loose, skated over to the other corner and checked the Duck that got the puck, then gained control of the puck and fed a sweet pass to Goc in the slot. Of course, since its Goc, they didn’t score, but it was still a nice hard-working play.
GO SHARKS!
score first

Thornton has been brutal
Sloppy passes, can’t handle the puck, gets knocked off the puck all the time, lazy skating (WORK, DAMNIT!!), couldn’t backcheck to save his life… I’m starting to cringe whenever he’s out on the ice.
That said, Michalek’s hit was a beauty. And Randy and Drew’s conversation was… interesting. And kind of informative, in a “let’s list random things about 1969!” way.

a toast:
here’s to what made this team dominant in the last (few) games:
1) out skating anaheim.
2) initiating contact, but not losing focus on winning the puck
3) really strong forecheck/backcheck. causing havoc in the other end so anaheim cant even break out.
4) controlling the puck and movement east to west in the O zone. no more of this force into the slot from behind the net with all 10 skaters in the crease leading to a turnover.
go guppies. i dont believe, but i want it.

i'm not going to be doom and gloom
but I’m disappointed the sharks mailed this one in a bit. To me it was a repeat of game 1. Using DW’s reasoning from last season, I think the sharks have only shown up for 2 out of 4 games this series, and unfortunately, they lost one of the ones they showedup for
i read this sharks joke in espn magizine
q: what’s the same about the sharks and the titanic?

i admited it was a good joke, but i didn’t think they would sink tonight. i thought they were going to play well like in the 1st 3 games. granted they only won 1, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at shots, hits etc

errant, thoughtless passes. 2 consecutive thornton giveaways. thornton and roenick taking shit in front of the net with no revenge. how the sharks embarass me. how the sharks seem to care less than i do. how i feel right now. how ill feel tomorrow. how ill feel all day saturday before the game. how we are the better team and no one in the country will ever believe that ever again. just ughhh.
that was beyond disappointing.
that is an embarrassment.
an absolutely shameful (lack of) performance by a team that some of the best hockey minds say have the talent and depth to win the stanley cup.
i am stunned how this team played the way they did 2 days ago and decided they could skate half assed and pull this one off. tonight i am ashamed to be a fan of this franchise. way top kick the passionate game in the balls and say they dont care.
this team had a chance to inspire a whole new fanbase in the bay area of fans looking for a CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER TEAM. they not only squandered that chance, i believe they injured the ability to do that in the future. this team is a choke team. always have been. still are.

I sympathize with wanting to take a break
Because collective negativity probably (no – definitely) isn’t healthy, but I’m also not going to sit back and pretend everything’s all right.
Next season, when the President’s Trophy and Division Champion banners are raised, it would send a fitting message if we booed throughtout the ceremony. I say that knowing full well how much I wanted both honors – because we thought we could coast through on talent alone. Joe Thornton’s cocksure comments had me uneasy at the time, but in hindsight they’re especially repugnant.
“We’re big, we’re talented…” Growing up, my parents always said that my brother was the more naturally talented of the two of us, but I worked harder. My brother didn’t apply himself as well. I still love my brother, just like I still love this team, but dammit – they’ve got to frickin’ TRY or others will make their natural talent seem invisible.

Its really sad to see. I really love the team and the players we have but i think something will be done if we get knocked out first round.
I'm pissed
And because of that, I’m probably gonna pull a Thornton around here and not show up much. My pessimism has pretty much beat down all optimism I had after that one win (hell, I’m now feeling indifferent to Mitchell coming back), and I really don’t want to be another one of those doom and gloom people pulling everyone down.
you mean the sharks that didnt show up?
dont put the doom and gloom on us as fans. we are reactive. the paid professionals are the ones responsible for the product on the ice that we react to. this is merely a forum to discuss the reactions we have to that product.

I meant that I really don’t like to bitch and moan and whine online when it just gets me even more pissed off, and probably doesn’t help others much either. I’m just going to try and forget about this, move on, and hope that the players I like don’t get traded (pessimism rearing its ugly head).
And the Thornton remark was partially because of his reputation, and partially because I have seen him do next to nothing this whole damn series. Yeah, the Sharks as a whole haven’t showed up, but the guy that I’m mostly pissed at is Thornton. His lazy backchecking was one of the main reasons for the first two goals. His awful passes haven’t been connecting at all. His shooting is nonexistent. Its so fucking frustrating watching him get paid $7.1 million/year and do nothing.
i totally agree
thornton is disappointing because of how dominant we have seen him play. sometimes the guy look 10 feet tall. sometimes his passes defy logic. but as long as i have been a thornton fan he has been unable to be any of those things when it matters most. and it sucks to think that my favorite team could be better served to depend on a guy who doesnt let off the gas when you need him going 200 miles / hour.

He’s been so apathetic this series, its crazy. Actually, no. This year. Usually I remember some highlight reel pass that he does. The only thing that I could really think of was some random dump that happened to land at Marleau’s feet for the St. Louis goal. Other than that, he’s pretty much been a liability on the ice.
liability
i think is a word often in my mind when joe is in the defensive end especially. he will either stickhandle until he loses the puck or make a terrible pass into the middle of the ice where an opposing forward picks it up. and this is supposedly the best player on the team?

Talent on Paper...
Same old Sharks performance.Don’t show up when they have to.When your leading scorer is a defensemen you are probably in trouble. As players will tell you it’s up to them to perform. The coaches can’t play for them. The coaches don’t make bad passes, constantly fall down, show little to no effort in the biggest game of the year. The Pistons had similar issues with having a turn it on when we need to attitude and while it got them alot of Eastern conference finals appearances it cost them 2 and probably 3 coaches to realize that hey maybe it is the players fault they didn’t win those games.I’m sure the pre game speech didn’t contain the phrases “mail it in”,we are the #1 seed so we must be better"…You have to earn it on the ice and right now they aren’t earning it.Nabokov has been crap.Period.Look at the goals he’s letting in.Look at the number of shots. He is a problem. The Rangers are stealing games while being out shot and out played because of their goalie. We aren’t getting that type of performance. No blaming the ref’s,the crossbars, the lucky bounces. This is and was sadly a perfect example of Sharks playoff hockey. As for being a different team,I don’t see it.They are still a bad passing team and that hasn’t changed. They play soft on defense. They don’t play well when other teams pressure them. The new coaches have done nothing to change that. After the hot start look at their record.Other temas started figuring out how to slow them down.NO more 6or 7 goal games. We are all pissed because once again we got our hopes up that this year would be different and that’s why this hurts as much as it does.
i believe that's called

it's not for the sharks
it’s for the fans out there that are about to kill a baby (me)

who do you feel the worst for?
me? gotta be Jeremy Roenick. played his ass off tonight, and every night. he wanted it.

he's the only one
that plays his ass off every night. you can feel his effort. granted everyone else putting in 100%, but it sure as hell isn’t showing.

Changes
I agree I think players will go.If you thought Wilson was mad after last year…At some point you have to look at the Leadership in the room and realize you apparently don’t have any.Phil Jackson didn’t call timeouts when the Bulls got in trouble as he figured it was the players on the floor causing the problem and it was their job to correct it.The leadership came from their best player/s.Who on the Sharks has filled that role.No one since Owen Nolan. You shouldn’t be given a leadership role you should have to earn it every game and every shift and not on longest tenure or best player. Our Gm and coaches can’t put on skates and not make good bpasses or no back check or seem oddly indifferent for most of the game as if 1 win would change everything.I feel for JR as he played his ass off.Hell so did Claude when he was in there.get him and JR out there and get Pavs and Milan off as they are’t doing anything that count and breaking a pane of glass at this point really doesn’t matter
bullshit
Pavs and Milan off as they are’t doing anything
that 2nd line has been the most consistent line all year. marleau and thornton are supposed to be the leaders out there but they aren’t doing shit.

I love those 2
but I agree, they haven’t been in the playoffs what they were most of the season. That said, I don’t put the blameon their shoulders, to me they have been trying but not making it happen

well, no one has been doing anything, not just those 2
but i will say this, action or lack there of, reflects leadership.

honestly
i agree with you about the second line but Michalek except for that hit when he knocked that Duck into four other Ducks on the bench in game 4 has been invisible
and Pavs touches the puck all the time but nothing ever happens, he isn’t getting quality shots

one thing is for sure:
this team needs a new captain. it was noble and all of todd to give marleau the benefit of the doubt and keep him on, but now it is time to give it to someone who appears to give a damn.

Can't agree more
You know you have a problem when the supposed leader of the club is downright invisible in the playoffs.
maybe its not so bad...
the sharks *possibly not winning this series. detroit looks freaking unreal. no way sj beats them. you think the ducks get lucky bounces and make every other shot they take? watch detroit destroy anyone in there path on the way to a back to back championship. i am calling it right now. detroit over the b’s in 4
*most likely, highly probable, 98% chance they wont

i don't think
the b’s will even make it to the finals. don’t ask why, just something about them that screams upset to me.

I'm looking at who's going to be left in the East...
And I can see the Bruins beating every other team, handily. Let’s look at the regular season stats = against the Rangers (their next opponent, barring an epic “wouldn’t it be nice if SJ could do this” comeback by the Caps) the Bruins were 2-1-1. Against the Devils, Flyers and Penguins, they were 2-1-1 as well, but against the Hurricanes, they were 4-0-0. Assuming the Caps make the epic comeback: the Bruins had a 2-2-0 record against them this year.
Playoffs are a different beast, of course, but I predict the B’s will get past the Rangers to go to the Conference Finals. The Cup Finals are well within their reach, too – if not the Cup itself (curse Detroit).
