Game 5 Wrap Up: GO SHARKS

UPDATE: So, after last night's win and subsequent festivities, the wrap up never happened. Many apologies. However, many great wrap-ups were written (check out CT Gray's, or workthecycle's), and are worth a read.

Here's what I'll say about last night...

The team finally played like they cared, and I have faith that they can push this to a game seven.

What worries me though, is that Nabokov was unable to stop two easy shots with a 2-0 lead. Like we've said before, he's got to be the one that can step up and make a save when his team needs him.

Also, I've never been one to criticize McLellan, but I'm glad he finally went back to the lines that brought him here. One of Setoguchi's biggest compliments for McLellan was this: Seto said that he felt he could make a mistake and not worry about being overly punished, as was the case with Wilson. So my question is, why does McLellan feel that he needed to switch the lines after a poor game one? Questionable.

But, that's in the past. The lines are back together, and the Sharks are on a (one game) winning streak. I can't wait for tomorrow.

(Another note: In a tough, physical game, the best check was the beauty thrown by the linesman on Grier. If that doesn't happen, OT probably doesn't either)

Last Night's Revelry:

Plank, CT Gray, Lurker Shark, Ang6666, and Workthecycle are all at my house.

Just wanted to show up and say...

Go Sharks!

Great effort last night..

Scary ref’s. though! I think the big gorilla is off some of the players backs and hopefully they maintain that confidence and play well tomorrow knowing they can get the job done. I HOPE they are getting into Hiller’s head finally and breaking his will. I like the looks of Patty, Seto and Jumbo last night but Nabby still scares the bejeezus out us.

Lets hope the high shot count continues and we score first again. Let the “feeding frenzy” continue tomorrow night at The Pond. As Boyle mentioned during the post game interview, they need to come out of the gate in game six and play like hell for the first five minutes and get the first goal.

GO SHARKS!

That was one helluva game last night!

After Anaheim tied it up I was literally freaking out, I had to actually take a break from the game to clam down, I cam back just in time for Overtime………………….. yeah……………. I calmed down alright. I noticed one disturbing thing last night, and we’ve done it a lot over the past couple of months, beat the opposing team mercilesly for the first 40 minutes then……………… they hibernate or something. It worries me a lot, because Anaheim is a team that you normally can’t get away with that kind of crap. If it wasn’t for Nabokov, the Series would be over. However, if it wasn’t for Jonas “That damn freaking wall of a Swiss goalie” Hiller, the score probably would have been like 5 or 6 to zero. Positives I saw, for the first 40 minutes, Anaheim could nothing against the Sharks except watch Hiller save their asses. And FINALLY, FINALLY!!!!!!!!!! Our top line came through huge!!!!!!!!!! Marleau, Seto, and Big Joe all had goals, and Big Joe had 2 assists also, they played with literally a ton of HART, they carried the team on their backs, and would not except defeat from a bunch of freakin water foul. The whole Sharks team played with heart and determination last night. Nabokov was spectacular last night, he’s gotten some flak for some softies in this series, but its hard to blame him when the team is sucking in front of him. But last night he was solid, making some brilliant saves to keep the Sharks in it. He couldn’t really do anything about those two goals, those were wicked wrist shots that were allowed to defensive lapses.
I hope its not too much to ask for this kind of performance for games 6 and 7, and then hopefully the second round, then the 3rd round, and maybe the finals too?

GOOOOOO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!

by Diamondback15 on Apr 26, 2009 8:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not to be pessimistic or anything,

but those two goals Nabby gave up were both 5 hole… I don’t need to bring up any of the discussions about Nabby’s 5 hole here, because it’s been beaten almost to death. Definitely one of our strongest overall games in months. If Nabokov can get his stick down to cover the gap, as well as continue to make the spectacular saves he’s capable of, then I think we found ourselves a way back into this series. Nothing to really blast about the team in this game (except taking their foot off the gas to start the 3rd), and I for one am excited for Game 6. Hopefully no 4 OT malarkey this year.

Go Sharks

by Chicago Shark on Apr 26, 2009 8:55 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually, the second goal was glove side......

and both goals Nabby couldn’t do anything about, they were both nastily wicked wrist shots.

by Diamondback15 on Apr 26, 2009 9:00 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

From what I remember, it looked like it went blocker side, however

Then I read (think it was NHL.com) that it was glove side. I tried finding replays, but there were problems with quality. Then I found this picture

I’m not sure if this is a picture or not, my laptop won’t let me preview the post, it it isn’t, go to NHL.com, find the photo gallery for Ducks Sharks game 5, and go to photo # 22, it looks to me like low blocker side, but I could be wrong

by workthecycle on Apr 26, 2009 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if they were, you can't say Nabby has a weak 5 hole from those two goals

They were very good quick wrist shots from about the face off circle. Nabby had no time to react. In that situation its usually go down early and risk upper corner or leave yourself open for a deke against, or stay up to protect against the deke and upper shots, but leave your 5 hole weak. Its basically pick your poison, I actually think Nabby has played a little bit better this series than most people think, sure he’s let in some softies, but even those were started due to poor defense.

I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!

by Diamondback15 on Apr 26, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on Apr 26, 2009 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, consider the number of 5 holers that Hiller has given up

I can’t think of 1. On the other hand, Nabby has given up plenty all season, and a few more this series. As good as he can be, I’d say his 5 hole is definitely his Achilles heel.

by Chicago Shark on Apr 26, 2009 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly my point

Hiller is quicker at getting down than Nabby is, and it has cost us. That is one of the adjustments that I would like to see; sending more pucks upstairs rather than trying to jam them in before the whistle blows. Granted, it worked for the OT winner, but you can’t count on it working all the time.

by Chicago Shark on Apr 26, 2009 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nabs will step it up

he’s played well enough for us to win most of the games we’ve been in(except for game 4)
the only reason we aren’t in the second round by now is Jonas Hiller

It seems both Sharks wins have been preceded by my having dreams the prior night of them winning

2 nights ago, I dreamt the Sharks tied it up at 2 with with 0.4 seconds left in the third with the EXACT SAME GOAL MARLEAU SCORED LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! The Ducks also complained about that goal, and it was briefly reviewed. The Sharks won it in OT 3-2. Freaky.

ok here's the list so far of superstitions I need to juggle for game 6

1. don’t watch the game
2. don’t wear the same sharks gear I wore for the previous game, especially if it was a
     win (it was)
3. don’t wear two different articles of clothing that are sharks related, they cancel out.
4. if the game goes to OT, play “do you know the way to san jose?” on loop for the
   duration of each intermission
5. don’t give into superstition, it doens’t actually affect anything.

HOW am i gonna do this!!!!!!!!!!!

that unless it was very serious (i.e. broken bones) he’ll be back. The Vs. guys said it appeared to be upper body. The only hope would that it would be something that limits his effectiveness/playing time.

Funny story that will definitely make sense to those who were hanging out with me last night- once Patty scored the game winner, my buddies and I started going nuts and hugging each other. Unfortunately my feet weren’t the most trustworthy things at that moment in time, and I fell over into the row below. Idiot.

Also, and I have no idea how I did this, but my phone died last night so my alarm didn’t go off. I had to take the bus at 930 and went to sleep about 4. Miraculously I woke up at nine.
