One win, sixty minutes or otherwise, evens this series. What a beautiful day to be alive.
In terms of matchups tonight, it's completely reasonable to think that (even with the last change) Carlyle won't have a Herculean advantage when trying to nullify San Jose's surging first line. Big Joe & Co. saw the majority of their shifts against Getzlaf in game five, and although that has burned the Sharks before, it is entirely possible reuniting the reinvigorated first line will continue to pay off dividends.
I'm not sure if this is a trend, but it's interesting- both wins this series came after an "emotional" change to the team. Torrey Mitchell's return in game three brought a 4-3 victory, while a meeting between McLellan and his big guns prompted last night's win. While they don't have any opportunities left in that regard, having Carlyle question the validity of your game winning goal could be some decent bulletin board material. It's either that or call and see if Arturs Irbe would like to suit up for one last playoff run.
On another semi-related note that's probably more relevant anything we have written during the course of the playoffs thus far, line one will be forever known as the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS for short). We're going as far as that line can take us.
Bring it on back to San Jose boys.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-1. Goals by Boyle, Ehrhoff, Marleau, and Pavelski. All four of them are ripped through Hiller's five hole. Epic imagery there by the way. Enjoy it.
Go Sharks.

Sharks can do it!
Go Sharks!
Let’s bring this back to San Jose.
The Capitals were down 3-1 to the Rangers in the series and just pulled a game 7 today. We can do it too!

I'm placing my bets that Jamie Bakers
Wanders down from the Radio Booth to give the Sharks a pre-game 6 pep talk.
I’m going with Torrey Mitchell scores a garbage-goal game-winner to bring the series back to the Tank.

Sharks come out on top
Two series are eerily alike in this Round 1, Sharks/Ducks and Caps/Rangers………I look for the same kind of performance tonight from the Sharks that the Caps put out, and if Nabby can keep his 5 hole closed, we might even beat them by more than 1 goal!!
Think Wednesday in the Tank!!!
Go Sharks!! I’ll be watching from Louisiana!!!
One more win.

I’ve said it before – Sharks have the talent, just need the heart. They can take this series, just one game at a time.

Tonight's game
The first goal is going to be so huge… I we score it, our confidence should continue to increase. If Anaheim scores first it plays right into their hands of being able to clog up the neutral zone and kill all our speed. Here’s to hoping they come out like a house on fire again and maybe even “bump” into Hiller a time or two to soften him up. A 3-0 first period lead would be nice.

I'm going with Will's prediction tonight.
Torrey Micthell scores and gets cute face of his splattered all over the news. We win the game and they bring all back to san jose to show if off again.

this game will be decided in the 1st 5 minutes.
i think someone on cheech/roenick/mitchells line gets a goal. maybe all three at the same time simultaneously push the puck across the line.

On my part, my negativity was a direct result of Game 4's non-performance
Although I was preparing myself for what seemed inevitable at the time, I’ve realized that I wasn’t giving the team enough credit. Game 5 was a good example of that, and I for one am looking forward to Game 6 being another.

NOOO DON'T DO THAT
I counted my chickens before they hatched and bought tickets to the Anaheim series before the Sharks finished off whoever they were playing that season. (God I can’t even remember what year this was. 2 years ago I think.)
Sharks didn’t do the job, and I got stuck with tickets to the Anaheim frickin Ducks. My only solace was I got to watch Friesen score a goal.
And that I managed to sneak into the Countrywide luxury box in the third period.
I have a theory...
but I may just be dumb, it seems the best way around Hiller is with a tip. Marleau got a game winner that way. Anyone else feel this way?

My Prediction
JR comes out of nowhere and just takes the game over much like his did in the Calgary series last year. Murray continues to make the Ducks feel like their in a pinball machine. Ryan continues to shine as a rookie (I’ll admit his dive over Nabby to score was a pretty good goal but his others have just been unhindered slot shots) to make things interesting, but the Sharks take it back in the end.
The Sharks will win
in epic foosball fashion. Plank Carlyle will bitch about a non foos call, but that won’t affect the outcome.

Keep Dreaming!
The “RPG” line (Ryan, Perry, & Getzlaf) will dominate as they have all series. Hiller (aka Swiss Bliss) will get his 3rd shot out of the SERIES! Only way the Sharks can win is if they get the benifit of 8 PP. Ducks will win 4-0 (again). GO DUCKS!!!!
Well if Anaheim got called for interference every time they try and illegaly clog the neutral zone
we would have 8 PP’s, at least.

Cheechoo and JR have gotten away murder!
I agree they don’t call us for interfearance, but watch Cheechoo leave his feet on EVERY hit (that’s a charge). I am not saying we are getting screwed or anything like that, but don’t think for a second that you are either. Your team has been loosing for two reasons. 1) lack of production from your top 2 lines. 2) Hiller has been the best player on the ice all series.
Let’s not forget the Ducks have BEEN there and have more playoff experience!
Fair.

Not bitching at all. I am simply saying if you don’t get 8 PP you will loose. I was being nice and not taking any shots, but lets not pretend we like each other. The Sharks are again showing they can’t hang under pressure. Goaltending wins championships (we have two championship calibur Goalies you have 0). We have the (RPG line) you have the (can’t cut it in the playoffs line). We have a Stanley Cup (you have a presidents cup). Need I say more???

why do people always bring up the Cup thing?
It has little bearing on any year beyond the Cup winning one. (and you won’t convince me it matters, so don’t bother) Sharks have gotten to R3 before. It’s not the same as the SCF but it’s not like they’re sniffing the post season for the first time. I personally don’t evaluate seasons based on passed ones. Compare and contrast, but they really have little effect on each other.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
here's my prediction...
If the Sharks win tonight and force a 7th game Shark Killer will not show his duck like puss around this board for the verbal tongue lashing he’ll have deserved
(we have two championship calibur Goalies you have 0)
I wonder, which goalie was it that won last year’s World Championship for Russia? I think it was this one guy, Evgeni Nabokov? Now, that name seems mighty familiar…
Oh, “can’t cut it in the playoffs line”? Who has the second most playoff goals since the lockout, only after Iginla? That’s right, Patrick Marleau. Who also has 10 playoff GWG. But that has been gone over ad nauseam in this blog – you really do need to check the archives.
Late, but hey. Furthering my education or whatever you people call what we do in school.
also...
is it really fair to call a goalie who has played 69 career games championship caliber?
I don’t think that fits the definition any way you spell it.

Cvik?
That’s the one official that I hate. He has this irrational hatred of Pavelski, or at least he does according to me. Phantom headbutt, phantom dive, and phantom trip all called on Pavs when Cvik was the closest linesman (and, in the case of the headbutt, he was the one that actually directed the refs to call it). For that, I hate him.
Unless you mean some other really tall official (although I can’t think of any), so in that case disregard what I wrote, lol
Ah! I did not connect the bad calls and the giant linesman
I am merely rooting for him because he is massive. No other reason.
Yeah, most people don’t tend to keep track of things like that. I just noticed it the first time because he was so big, and then kept an eye out whenever he was officiating, which happened to coincide with the phantom calls on Pavelski.
Probably just a coincidence, but eh, I like irrationally hating officials with circumstantial reasons. Its fun.
I will leave you alone
Trust me when I say I know what its like to be close and not quite get there. The Ducks went to the cup and lost in game 7 to NJ. two years later they lost in game 7 of the western cofrence finals (damn Pronger). If the Sharks can get a TRUE #1 Goalie the will eventually win a few cups. Good luck tonight should be a VERY phisical game (just they way we like it).

Your first sentence makes it sound like Joe would have trouble taking his gloves off.
Your second sentence makes it sound like you (Shark Killer) will actually move Joe Thornton.
And just the fact that Parros’ mustache is thicker and fuller than Cheech’s doesn’t mean he would win in a fight.

Nabby's 5 Hole Stats
I just watched all the replays on NHL.com. Some are hard to tell, but I’m pretty sure this is right.
Goals Allowed:13
Five Hole Goals Allowed: 7
Goals Allowed on Shots From Point/Above Circles: 5
Five Hole Goals on Shots From Point/Above Circles: 3
So, 53.8% of the goals allowed by Nabby this series have been to the five hole, and 42.8% of those goals were from shots far from the net.
Excuse me as I barf.

yeah vesce has had one hell of a season,
so he’s centering line one, i still question whether or not he will make a huge impact due to his size but he’s a great skater with tremendous playmaking ability
I don't like you Detroit.
he didn't look that great when he was up

i get it,
yeah thats whats tough about prospect call ups, they get inserted into a checking line, and have nothing to work with

Sportsnet.ca scouts say...
Pros: Has the ability to put points on the board, especially at lower levels. Works very hard and is also feisty
Cons: Is rather diminutive, so he struggles against big defensemen. Also struggles in his defensive-zone coverage.
Potential: Reserve forward.
Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!
that is spot on,
my exact thoughts on him vs big defenseman, think about him vs pronger yikes
I don't like you Detroit.
That's what they said about Mitchell...
but Vesce is a bit older, and hasn’t quite stuck. If he’s going to be an NHLer, it’s gonna be as a wing (the Sharks are loaded with C’s), and probably in a fourth line / penalty killing role.
Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!
Heathy Mitchell. I like what I’ve seen.
Plihal is good though, and has shown skill. Who knows.

I hear you on the superstitions, Dave
I’m personally confused – for Game 4, I went out to eat (as is usually good luck before Sharks games). Problem though – the good luck was always for HOME GAMES. I take full credit for the loss. For Game 5, I had Una Mas nachos at the Tank – and wouldn’t you know it? A win!
Soooo… as much as I want to go out for sushi (and yes, I know that particular dish is bad luck for you, Dave), I’m going to fix something up at home for the greater good. For Game 7, I’ll get my Una Mas nachos again.

The what-if NHL Semifinals lineup
In the Eastern Conference…
- Boston plays the Rangers if New York wins Game 7, otherwise they play Pittsburgh.
- If Washington wins, they play either New Jersey or Carolina (depending on who wins).
- If New York and Carolina both win, then Pittsburgh will play Carolina.
In the Western Conference…
- If the Sharks WIN, they will play either Chicago or Calgary.
- If Anaheim wins (NONONONO), they will play Detroit.
- If Anaheim wins, then Vancouver will play either Chicago or Calgary.
- If San Jose wins, then Detroit will play Vancouver.
Fear The Fin = Anyone who doesn’t like fighting in the NHL can go watch poker on ESPN. [Jamie Baker]
Whoops, error
Washington could play Pittsburgh in Round 2, if New Jersey wins. Washington can’t play Carolina.
Fear The Fin = Anyone who doesn’t like fighting in the NHL can go watch poker on ESPN. [Jamie Baker]
DAMMIT
Wrong again….
Boston is in (1)
Pittsburgh is in (4)
If Carolina wins (6) and Washington wins (2), then Ovechkin and Crosby will go at it.

The error-free (?) NHL Semifinal scenarios
In the East…
- If Carolina AND Washington win Game 7, then Boston plays Carolina, and Washington plays Pittsburgh. Ovechkin vs. Crosby? Place your bets, people!
- If Carolina AND New York win Game 7, then Boston will play the Rangers, and Pittsburgh will play Carolina. Gary Bettman yawns at this scenario.
- If New Jersey AND Washington win Game 7, then Boston plays Pittsburgh, and New Jersey plays Washington. Philly fans will be torn over who to boo more.
- If New Jersey AND New York win Game 7, then Boston plays New York, and New Jersey plays Pittsburgh.
In the West….
- If San Jose AND Chicago advance, then they play each other, while Detroit plays Vancouver.
- If San Jose AND Calgary advance, then they play each other, while Detroit still plays Vancouver.
- If Anaheim advances, they play Detroit. Vancouver will play the winner of the Chicago / Calgary series.

1st period report
Good jump, Joe definitely still has the fire burning from Game 5 (if the fight 2 seconds into the game indicates anything). That elbow by Perry was horrible – almost suspension-worthy, IMO. All the lines have a lot of jump and have been rolling nicely. Fourth line continues to be the “YAY MITCHELL IS PLAYING” line, which is always awesome.
The Boyle penalty was BS, especially seeing how it was Parros who cross-checked Grier. If the refs weren’t playing to the scoreboard, I could see them giving Boyle a penalty and Parros a double minor for roughing and cross-checking to even it up. The Ducks did NOT deserve to go on the PP after that.
Oh, and Nabby has shown up – that Ducks goal not only was on a weird bat out of the air, but also on a 4 on 3, which is extremely hard to defend against. I don’t blame him for that one, although I am still extremely mad about it.

Until next year I guess.
Who’s leaving this off season?
ill join you
but I don’t care who’s leaving. I know exactly what this team needs. We need a big talented player. Sort of like Ryane Clowe, but dirtier. I’m thinking a Milan Lucic player idealy?
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
Remember earlier in the season?
Clowe was one big, mean motherfucker. Dropped the gloves a lot, didn’t take any shit, and scored a lot. He stopped fighting once the top line grew cold and the second line was the only scoring we had. I bet if he didn’t feel that he was really relied on for scoring, he’d become the guy that got the Gordie Howe again.
Oh, and I removed my self-imposed moratorium on swearing. I felt the situation was apt.
YES!
But he morphed back which made me sad. We NEED a guy who will intimidate other players, not just hit them. Players sometimes look scared by a Pronger or a Lucic or a Getzlaf or a Alex Burrows type player. Players like Daniel Carcillo or Sean Avery are nice, but their lack of skill cancels out in our system you know? I’ve been wanting a big intimidating guy for so long and to see the unused potential in Clowe just hurts. Do you know of anything/anybody who could help?
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
I honestly think we should just stick with Clowe. He’s still young and developing, and I’m sure the coaches can work with him in the offseason to develop that mean streak that was apparent October-November.
Of course, that point is moot if we aren’t able to resign him.
That
and resigning Mitchell are two of my top concerns. But Clowe still looks a little nervous on the big stage trying to intimidate.
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
He also just got back from a knee injury where he had to have a minor procedure. If you remember, he was out for most of last year with a knee injury on the same knee. Obviously, a little tentative playing on it.
And I wouldn’t expect much trouble resigning Mitchell – the guy played a grand total of six games this year, including pre-season, his rehab stint, and the post-season. He’s not going to be high on any GM’s list.
Yeah
I sure hope it won’t be a problem. But putting him in our lineup just seemed to change things. I felt that he goes hard ever play every minute and is critical to our team.
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
No arguments from me
I’m the one who has been dutifully following Mitchell’s progress back onto the team since that second day of training camp when he initially broke his leg. He is hands down my favorite player.
I LOVED THIS SEASON
And I refuse to be sad. All you chicken littles though, and you media poops who only watch in the playoffs, have I got words for you!
I’ll be back next year Sharks, ready to go! Thank you guys!

I'm sorry...
But I can’t see this season as anything other than a complete and epic failure. This team was to be measured by what they did in the playoffs…and they looked like a team that had no idea how to play in the playoffs.
And no, I’m not chicken littling…but I’m sick and tired of regular season success followed by turds in the playoffs. This was not a great season, it was a failure.
But, nevertheless, I’ll be back cheering my ass off for them next season…as always.

failure is how you see it
If you buy all that crap the media spits out, you’ll feel sad. But they got to the playoffs, they had a great year, and I’m fine seeing THAT as a success. The judged on playoffs crap can bite me.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
NO nonononono....
Success is measured in the playoffs. To have this level of talent, and not get out of the first round is a failure. I love them, and it was nice to get the President’s Cup, but there is no was I can call this season a success…
And it has nothing to do with the media. ESPN, the East Coast and Canadian media…they can all blow me. But as a fan of this team, its frusterating as all hell to see such a talented team struggle so mightily in the postseason.
And I’m not calling out their heart, or hustle or anything like that. But it comes down to this…do you know how to play in the playoffs or not. I will not accept this as a good season based on regular season success…I refuse to do that. This was supposed to be a Cup contender…and they looked far from it.

Just play the last four rounds and leave it at that.

The ultimate goal is still the Cup … yes the Sharks accomplished alot this year. They have much to be proud of. But they still failed in the ultimate goal. In round one even. Against a team that just made it into the playoffs. They really should have done better than they did. Again yes they accomplished alot this year. Broke alot of records. But they didn’t reach the top of the mountain.
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

I'm not giving up on the Sharks in the future...
I love the Sharks. I have always loved them. But based on what this team was to be judged on…even the management said this repeatedly…they were to be judged by how they fared in the playoffs…so, I’m holding them to that. And I expected that of them too, as a fan…
It was a good season, no doubt, but I cannot call this season a success. There’s no possible way that this isn’t a failure.

Well, its been a fun year......... NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been a Sharks fan for a very long time, and I just don’t think I’ll ever be able to be positive in the playoffs again until we win a cup. Call me pessimistic, this was the best team we had, ever, we didn’t even make it out of the first round. I knew facing Anaheim wasn’t a good thing, I feared it, and I was right. I really wish we could have got Roenick that cup.
I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!
Yeah Drew is right

Guys and gals of FTF . . .
The world has not ended.
Next season will still occur.
Remember what happened to the St. Louis Blues when they won the President’s Trophy? They lost. To you guys. In Round One.
The next year, they were totally not expected to make anything of a playoff run . . . yet, they did. To the Conference Finals, a place they hadn’t been in . . . oh, about 15 years or so.
There’s still hope. But the moral of the story is . . . never win the President’s Trophy. Unless you’re the fucking cocklicking asssucking douchebagging Detoilet Dead Things.

I can't believe the season is over...
In retrospect, there were a lot of positives to be gained from the regular season. The emergence of the 2nd line. Patrick Marleau’s comeback season. Ehrhoff and Murray’s continued development. I hope this isn’t the last we see of J.R. He deserves better than this. I’d like to see him stay on for another season. He wasn’t offensively as productive, but that JR Mitchell Cheechoo line was dynamite in the past two games.
Anaheim played their hearts out. Jonas Hiller proved to be 2003 Conn Smythe Winner JS Giguere v.2. There’s no shame in losing to the Ducks. They rode a hot goaltender and played very well. Ducks, I am convinced, were the better team in this series. Todd McClellan was out-coached by Randy Carlyle and he could not adjust to the Ducks defensive schemes and clogging up the neutral zone. The RPG line was the best line in the series.
Thank you Sharks for the entertaining hockey and fun times this year. I’ll remember some of the fonder memories like our team’s 1st President’s Trophy, Marleau’s GW against the Stars at the tank, Clowe’s Gordie Howe hat tricks, Dan Boyle’s spin moves.
There’ll be a lot of changes in the offseason. We may not see Rob Blake, Mike Grier, JR, or Cheechoo. And probably one of Nabokov, Thornton, or Marleau might be traded.
I’m off to root for my Eastern Conference team, the Penguins.
And here’s rooting for Detroit!
Thanks Sharks

my brother lived here and kept Bay Area loyalty when moved back east. He’s indifferent to the Pats and Red Sox (same as was here), he hates basketball so that hardly does anything. Canes.
I have this irrational hatred of the Hawks (even though I’m glad Campbell screwed them over for the next few years and the fans I met when I went to a game there were all really nice and all worshiped Roenick), and all the other teams’ fans bug me. Shallow, I know.
I'm indifferent to the East
Except for when it comes to teams with insanely annoying fans, like Rangers, Penguins, Capitals, and Bruins. Well, Bruins because its Boston – they’ve had enough championships this decade. The Bay Area has had shit, unless you count things like arena football.
I just love the Carolinas
They have unique regional soda’s, all four seasons (In the North), and beautiful scenery.
What more could you ask for!
I cant root for anyone left in the West. I hate Anaheim, Hate the Wings, I dont want to look at Matt Sundin’s massive head, and Chicago I just dont care enough about.
Well, the hatred of the Ducks and Wings is kind of self-explanatory. And Vancouver winning would annoy me to no end (especially since the Sharks play so well against them). I already explained Chicago.

I STILL LOVE THE SHARKS
as sad as it may have turned out, I still feel like they have a lot to look forward too next year.
(Same for us fans)
heck, i blame the refs.
Great season guys
We didn’t get what we came here for, but you know what? They gave us an entertaining product to watch night in and night out (with the exception of Game 4 =P), and they’ll keep fighting on for us in the future. We have a good young core, and I know this might get redundant every year, but we have something to look forward to. I hope we don’t shake up this team significantly, we really have something special going here.
We can’t blame the refs for the losses in this series. The Ducks play dirty, but look at the scoreboard – they didn’t just barely beat us in their last two wins. The Ducks showed up to play, and our guys showed heart, but it just wasn’t enough.
Fuck the Ducks, Fuck the Red Wings, and PRAISE BE THE SHARKS, the 2010 STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS.
sweet
yeah, ill take a great 82 (ok maybe more like 30-40, but the last 40-50 still were somewhat palatable sometimes…) over a sweet 16. ok no i wont, but weve got next year.
and all offseason to talk about trading this guy and that. not yet though. not yet.

If only Purdy wasn’t a hack who only showed up around the playoffs. If an article has his name on it, I don’t read it.

Geez
You could just see Nabby choking up in the post-game interview when he said “We failed as a team.”
Personally, I thought Nabby had a strong game tonight. Probably one of his better games of the series. None of those goals were soft. He made some critical stops in the 2nd to keep it 1-1.
But I refuse to talk about his performance this series after tonight’s loss.

I think it was appropriate
when all of the microphones pulled away from him at once when he said “we failed as a team”
The fat lady is clearing her pipes. Time to shove some corn down her throat.
I agree
It was sort of symbolic too when the lights cut away from him as well. That’ll stick in my mind for awhile.
I know everyone in that locker room wanted to show themselves to not be perennial playoff underachievers this year. And now they have to wait next year to show it. Nabby, Marleau, and Cheechoo have been with this team the longest. I hope they do get to taste the Cup when it comes to the Tank.

i was watching the last period with this in mind:
this is the last hockey i will watch for like 6 months. i want to enjoy it. and i did. i am happy that those guys get to go home and play golf and go to sweden and do whatever. next year i will be cussing at the tv night in and night out.
*go sharks.
if there are not significant ROSTER changes between now and october i will be VERY unenthusiastic about next season. this shit needs to stop. i am tired of thinking this team maybe has the skill but does not have the HEART to achieve the purpose of playing professional hockey.

i would be pissed an trolling now, but i am, happily, a joyous drunk. i had a bad feeling before the game so i made sure to have enough on hand to feel alright about this. yeah yeah call dr. phil.
but honestly. on paper, this sharks team should be better. i think. maybe they need another year. maybe.

thats what the discussion was about midseason.
and i think the evidence of mcclellan’s rookieness was very evident in this series. sj could not come back and adjust if anaheim changed gameplan and rode the trap home. that is coaching. it might take another year.

to institute a round robin tourney. not best of 7 against one, but just throw all those motherfuckers in there and let em fight it out.

Thanks for making the back end of this season a fun one for me...
…despite the Sharks’ failures this postseason, they still accomplished a lot and have a lot to build on. I’m glad I found yall this season, and should be around during the offseason (although will most likely be splitting time between this and AN, since it’s baseball season now).
Cheers!
