To ask a man to recap tonight is akin to watching Mr. T punch your significant other in the face while you are getting teabagged by Gilbert Brown.
Stunned. Shocked. Numb. Disappointed that a season, a season that had so much promise, has been ripped away in a mere six games.
Congrats to the Anaheim Ducks and The Battle of California on the series win.
Thank you to all the readers who have followed us. Special thanks to Dave, Gray, Lurker, Ang, idunno, serrapadre, Marcello, mymclife, WillR, Nael M, and all of those who have been here all year (I'm sure I missed a few). Thank you to those who have ever commented here, and those who have thought about it but never signed up. We're going to need everyone this offseason.
This series will be recapped tomorrow. If you're expecting something more right now, go ahead and start your own blog.
Go Sharks.

I’ve heard KMac is having a great influence on the younger WorSharks – he’s really helping them hone their defensive game and what kind of plays to make in what situation. I’m not sure if he’s NHL-caliber anymore (he’s just way too injured), but he’s definitely a great asset in Worcester.
I’m guessing McGinn will be sent back down, although the team has been doing pretty well without him. I fully expect McGinn to be on the regular roster for the NHL Sharks next year, though.
And I really want to see how well Couture and (hopefully, if he plays) Petrecki fare professionally. Couture already has two goals in the playoffs (also his first two goals professionally), and I’ve read that he seems to have a bit of a physical streak in him.

A few thoughts
I am an optimist by nature. It really sucks sometimes, having that rug of hope pulled out from under you. After the second period tonight, I pulled out my pessimist hat and expected the team to lose. Not because I wanted them to, but because of that whole self-preservation thing. I sometimes take losses way too hard. So that’s why, after this game, I’m a bit more level-headed than I normally would be. That, and I swore up a storm when Corey Fucking Perry scored and got a lot of my anger out there.
We came into the playoffs with a whole lot of expectations, expectations that I’m not quite sure were earned. A rookie head coach was brought in, with his completely new offense-based system. The Sharks have been operating under a defense-based system under the Ron Wilson years, so the new style of play was completely different. They didn’t know how to use the system when the offense wasn’t clicking, when there were 9 guys out with injuries, when it seemed like nothing was going their way. And McLellan, for all of his experience being an assistant coach with Detroit, was still trying to learn how to change up the system a bit to get the Sharks rolling again, as well as how to utilize all the players with their difference strengths.
Admit it – we were spoiled in the 2008 portion of the season, when it seemed like the Sharks could never lose unless go up against a hot goaltender. All that talk about NHL records and the possibility of a Stanley Cup really got into our heads – or at least it did into mine. At that point, we were on the top of the world – had yet to lose in regulation at home, lost maybe 4 games in regulation, could score goals like there was no tomorrow, etc. The Sharks came back to earth, and yet we were still high on the first part of the season, back when no team really understood that yes, it was the Sharks that had that high-powered offense.
And as for more positives – Marleau really shined this year. He slowed at the end, but he really bounced back from last season and showed why he was the #2 overall pick in the 1997 draft. Setoguchi emerged as a legit goal scorer in the first half of the season, and in the second half showed a reckless abandon dedicated to hitting everything that moved. Not a bad guy to have on the team. The entire second line (Michalek-Pavelski-Clowe, if anybody has yet to have it memorized by now) showed how deadly they were on both the power play and the penalty kill. Pavelski in particular has really emerged as a great defensive forward that scores clutch goals. And that entire line has defied all criticism from previous seasons and often showed up as the most physical line on the ice, getting into scrums and not taking shit from anybody. Boyle, after many doubting his value with regards to his $6.67 million/year for 6 years contract, made me wonder how we ever won without him. The Sharks/Wings game with the Sharks winning 6-5 was one of the greatest regular season games I have ever seen. And Staubitz provided me with my favorite fight of all time.
Oh, and we won the freaking President’s Trophy, giving variety to the banners hanging at the Tank. That was pretty nice, as well.
Yeah, we flamed out in the playoffs, but just remember – when Ron Wilson first took over as head coach, the Sharks missed the playoffs. The next season? Western Conference Finals. Do it.

Another thing to consider, even if we lose JR and Blake, we’ve got a plethora of rookies waiting in the wings to get their shot.
Plus, we’ll fingers crossed get a full season of Torry.
by SirVenro on Apr 28, 2009 12:30 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Somehow I doubt JR will retire – he only played about half the season this year, and on a limited fourth line role, so he probably has another year in him. Plus, he said the Sharks will be his last team, so no worries about him signing somewhere else.
And the only way I see us losing Blake is because his price will be too high – he may be turning 40, but he’s still one damn good defenseman. If he takes a significant pay cut, I could actually see him being on the team one more year, which would be awesome, even more so if he learns to stop taking all those hooking penalties, lol.

Somehow I doubt JR will retire.
I have my doubts here. I specifically watched two players in the handshake line — Moen, who was best friends with just about everybody in Anaheim, and Roenick, who specifically took the last spot in the line right in front of the coaches and took a really long time to say congrats to everyone — even Hiller, who I’m not sure understood him.
He probably could play next year, but it didn’t feel that way last night.

My thoughts exactly, I think McLellan will sit down and do some serious re-tooling to his system this off season making it more well rounded for all aspects of the game. I still think that there will be about 40 shots on goal per game, but there will also be a system put into place for a Hiller-esqe performance by another goalie.

Enjoy the President's Trophy
No, I mean that seriously. It’s a major accomplishment. If you tell them about this, some people will tell you it’s meaningless. Well, fuck them. (That’s an observation, not an instruction. Well, unless “people” includes… actually, let’s just not go there.) It’s not meaningless.
I’m not going to stake out the radical position that it’s actually MORE meaningful than the Stanley Cup, partly because even I don’t hate the playoff system THAT much and partly because they really measure different things, but that’s kind of the point. Anyone who really thinks about things will realize that it’s not just meaningless, it’s highly meaningful. Over a full season, the Sharks were the best team in the NHL. 7 games in April does not erase that fact.
I could really go off on a numerical tangent here, but I’ll stay on point: if someone tells you the President’s Trophy is meaningless, they are either a. deficient in the upper story, or b. pulling a damn good impression of it, or c. an ass. Regardless of which, don’t bother listening to them.

Some good perspective here.
Lord Stanley’s Cup should be the ultimate goal every season, but this team still accomplished a whole lot this season. A lot of people are going to forget that. Or ignore it because they didn’t start following the team until 82 games had been played.

We could have had so much more. But then this happened again.
You really think we can get back to where we were? No way. We’re gonna lose a lot of vets and some of the prime players may be cut. I’m tired of them not showing up for the playoffs. I guess some of you are okay with a president’s cup, whatever the fuck that is good for. But enough is enough. This fanbase is too good to be treated like shit in the playoffs. Yeah we’ll always support the team, but we can’t let them do this to us time and time again. I respect optimists, but be real. If you look back in the first game or two’s threads, you can see me calling it.

Yeah the early exit sucks
But its not like the Sharks were completely dominated from start to finish. If it wasn’t for the incredibly hot-handed Hiller, the Sharks probably would have won all except Game 4.
Oh, and seriously? Few rookie head coaches win Cups. If I remember correctly, the average amount of time a head coach takes to win a Cup is 5 years. And we expect him to do it in one? Yeah, we’re hungry as a fanbase, but we have to be realistic here.
And I’m sick and tired of the fucking “heart” argument. You don’t think there was heart when Thornton fought Getzlaf, or Pavelski fought Whitney? You don’t think there was heart when Marleau willed the OT winner in? You don’t think there was heart when Thornton trash-talked Getzlaf all throughout Game 5? You don’t think there was heart when Torrey Mitchell battled back from his leg injury to finally play this season? You don’t think there was heart in Boyle’s entire performance, specifically Game 5? Because I remember a shitload of heart from the players, even if you chose not to see it.
by mymclife on Apr 28, 2009 7:12 AM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
for me, game 2 was the key
I think you could make an argument that the Ducks deserved 1, 4, and 6, but if Hiller stole one game in particular, it was Game 2. That put the team in a hole that was hard to climb out of
by a10dency2ask on Apr 28, 2009 7:17 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
And I’m sick and tired of the fucking "heart" argument.
Thank you. I could never have put that so eloquently.

Anyone who claims teams lose playoff series because they didn’t “want it more” or “lacked heart” should be tossed into the bay with weights tied to their feet.

I think "heart"
is a metaphor/substitute for intangibles. By definition, intangibles are abstract, and impossible to quantify. Although you may not be able to say the Sharks lacked heart or whatever, there was definitely some intangible that the Ducks had more of than we did. Perhaps underdog status, perhaps a rook goalie who didn’t know he shouldn’t be making those saves, perhaps the confidence that came with a very strong late season showing…like Tootsie-Pops, the world may never know.

I know we're supposed to be rivals and all
And I know I’m supposed to revel in another Sharks playoff disappointment.
But I can’t. See, I grew up a Chicago Blackhawks fan. And as you might guess, J.R. was my favorite Hawks player growing up. I made up my mind that if San Jose raising a Stanley Cup banner was what it was going to take for my man to finally get his ring, I’d live with it.
I slumped a bit when they showed a shot of J.R. standing out on the ice before a faceoff late in the game. At the moment, I realized there’s now a 99.9% chance Roenick will never get his ring.
Not to mention, we feel your pain. Afterall, it was one of your other teams from the Bay Area that only two years ago shocked our Mavs in the first round after they won 67 games.
Chins up, guys. And girls.

Leadership and this season
The season was fabulous. Thank you to everyone on here who made me feel like a full-time person, even though I didn’t find the blog until 2/3 way through the year. Looking forward to next season very much.
My take – We had the skill, we didn’t have the on-ice leadership (can you say Sakic, Yzerman, etc.). DW will be making wholesale changes (see Ross McKeon’s column this morning), next years version will not look like this years version at all. I am excited at the prospect of October, and hope everyone has a wonderful summer!

Well...
For those of you who saw how I reacted after a win, you can probably understand why I wasn’t here after this loss.
I was disappointed, sure, but today is a new day, and I’ve got a new outlook.
If you were to offer me a Sharks season where our boys were going to have the best regular season record, and in addition we’d see the emergence of so many of our young players as top NHL talent, I’d take that in a heartbeat… regardless of postseason success.
The Rolling Stones once said (and then repeated a million other times): “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need.” I’m going to stick with that to describe this postseason. Unlike other teams, the Sharks didn’t mortgage their future to get to the playoffs this year. They’ve got some great young players on the roster, and some top tier NHL’ers on the way. I’d like to think that this year will add something to the franchise that we never had before. I don’t even care if we win the President’s next year… I think I like being the underdog better.
It’s everyone’s own right to be disappointed, but I’d love to think of how much the Sharks, and this community, have grown this season. I love all of you and I’m so excited to be part of a community that’s as fanatical as all of you.
Oh, and like Plank said… keep coming back this offseason. We’ve got a truckload of stuff to keep you entertained. And yeah, I’d miss you if I didn’t see you for that long.

many thanks to the FtF staff, and those posters who were basically staff (Lurker, CTGray, mymclife, Dave, etc.). Maybe think of it this way; we can watch the playoffs without the ulcers and migraines of having our team in them. I know those are ailments we’d all gladly suffer for a cup run, but just trying to delude myself into accepting this. Now we just get to wait until DW decides what to do with our team. I love the Sharks
I’ve been in a depresssed stupor all day, but no more. Its time to forget about this postseason already, and look forward.
As always, its an exciting time to be a sharks fan. It should be an interesting off season seeing what Doug Wilson does to improve the team, and hopefully there will be some big name players coming in. The sharks arent a lost cause, and there are a lot of people who are going to want to play for such a great organisation in front of such great fans.
Its not as if this team has nothing. Its full of extremely talented players and playoff wins will come. Theres a good young core of players already playing at a high level, and heres hoping that Thornton finally starts playing with some passion after the pasting that he’s going to recieve over the next few days. Cheechoo did enough in the series to remind us what he is capable of, and if he stays a shark then hopefully he will have a comeback season.
Little consolation as it is, this team is made up of great people. While my friend spent all day taunting me about the Ducks victory, i pointed out that at least the Sharks arent a team of complete pricks, with a couple of exceptions, and they are a team that the fans can really love.
Gutted as i am, im trying to be positive. These tiburones are a classy organisation, and the playoff wins, just like the regular season dominance, will come.

This is their life. They’re professional athletes. You don’t focus on something like that unless you have a deep passion for it. They’re all lucky as hell to have made it to the NHL level, and they know it. They don’t just clock out and forget the next day. Just take a look at the locker room shots last night. Unless your a fan of the Isles, Lightning, or Coyotes, there’s no reason to think that we don’t have a chance in the near future. Even if the team is gutted (which it won’t be) we have the talent on the team and in the wings to make the playoffs for a very long time. As someone else said earlier, we didn’t mortgage our future to get into the playoffs now. With DW at the helm and another season to learn Sweeney Todd’s system, I’ll bet that we make the playoffs next year.

Being a hockey fan in general, I look forward to the offseason, any acquisitions we will make, worrying about who will be let go, and the start of next season. So what if people don’t think we can make any noise next year. I’m not going to write off my team for the foreseeable future based on this postseason’s failures. remember that the farthest the sharks have ever gotten in the playoffs
was pre joe thornton, pre dan boyle, pre rob blake. Remember that they got farther in their first playoff run, as an 8th seed, than they did in the past 4 post seasons.
The point is the golden era isn’t always when you think it is, at least in a world where playoffs rule. Sports are random, you NEVER EVER EVER know what will happen, whether you are at the peak of a decade-long stretch of dominance, or you are a flash in the pan (Carolina, Tampa Bay). Maybe a cup will come one day (I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE) maybe it won’t. This wasn’t the year. There may be some years in the future when the team is in the dumps like in the early years or like Dallas this season, doesn’t make the playoffs by a long shot. Maybe the franchise will tank for a few years like the Isles and get our first ever #1 draft pick (hope not! ). I for one am enjoying every season as it pans out in its own unique way. Yeah i’m disappointed. But what can any of us do? We can whine but it won’t change the fact that sometimes your team blows it, and then they’re still there for us to cheer at and jeer at the next year, and the next, and the next, and the next. with some new faces mixed in between

Look, you have a drastically different POV. I’m just trying to understand what you want from the team. The best way I can think to do that is to ask how you would address these issues.
As I have said,I’m not at all sure what I would do. So when someone seems to have a plan, I want to know what it is. I want to understand where you are coming from.

Do we keep Nabby?
Or do we address potentially issues in goal. What do we do?
Do we trade Joe? Do we keep Blake, even though he’s costly?
Do we change who’s got the C?
What about the A’s?
Do we keep the vets? What do they add/detract
How oo you make these Sharks into the Sharks you want?

Nabby should go, but won't
He had poise this regular season, but his weaknesses were exploited in the playoffs.
However, we don’t really have a replacement now, so it’ll take a FA to fill in the holes.
I dunno, Boucher was all right I guess.

For instance… do you really think you can get a flight out to Maui on this short of notice? And think of the time it takes to unpack, etc. If you said they were planning to go to Maui, I would have believed you.
Second… Margaritas are a Mexican drink, so the Sharks would be sipping Mai Tai’s in Maui, not Margaritas. Get your facts straight son.

You're saying I don't back my shit up?
Now you’re just pissing me off man. You wanna come through here and read some of the stuff that Plank and I have done over the season? The average reader on this site has more hockey knowledge than you do in your fingertip.
The “heart” argument is so BS. That’s a person’s way of justifying a loss when they have no idea what the hell they are talking about. Have you ever played professional sports? Do you know what it feels like to lose when you’ve invested your life into your career? I think not.
Look at the guys faces after the game and tell me that they had no heart. Really, try. Why don’t you actually watch the games and tell me what actually happened. Why the Sharks actually lost. Until then, stop intentionally pissing people off.
We’re the fans, not the players. It’s not my job to freak out. They’re doing that enough for all of us. I just know that the Sharks entertained me for an entire season, and they gave it their all. As a fan, can you ask for more? If you do, that’s taking it way too far.
Want some reasons why the Sharks lost?
1. Quantity over quality of shots
2. Giving into Anaheim’s feistyness in game 4
3. Bad play by Nabby
I can give a ton more, and none of them are going to include a lack of “heart” or “want”. Stop being a douche and start being a fan. If you want to come back and root for them next season, be my guest. Until then, I hope you trip while jumping off the bandwagon.

Way to drop the b-word
bandwagon.
I really don’t see how you can just drop that without knowing anything.
And yeah, maybe they did have some heart………… after being eliminated. Everyone and their grandmother would. They just didn’t show it in the first several games of the series. This is what is missing. Last year too. They started sloppy, and by the time the second round rolled around, they were tired and beat. To be in the playoffs, you have to want to be there. Yeah, the Sharks statistically had a good shot and we were robbed a couple games by Hiller, but it’s the intagibles that mattered in the playoffs. And, quite frankly, I only saw Boyle with any sort of emotion and wanting to be there.

The Ducks did a great job of blocking shots from the point...
And getting in the way of shooting lanes. Forcing offense to the outside. The guys played hard, but in my opinion, McLellan and his staff had a tough job adjusting to the style of play that Carlyle was utilyzing.
Granted, Todd is a first year coach and he’s gonna take his lumps. Carlyle is a seasoned vet. Next year, I’d love to see the same matchup.

I am aware
but the Sharks should have found a way to win.
I know Hiller played inhuman, I saw 5 games start to finish and the end of game 6, but you can’t peg that on coaching. Wilson was a pretty solid coach. Same thing happened.
I dunno, I just see too many patterns to not put any of this on the players.

No one debates whether or not players needed to step up
It’s the “heart” part that gets most people. Heart and stepping up are two different things in my mind. I saw “heart” last night. I saw a lot of great chances last night. This could easily be a whole different thread if those chances had gone in.
The players no longer connected with Wilson. By the end of last season, even without the various rumors of discontent, that was evident by watching the players and Wilson on the bench. That doesn’t translate to a lack of heart tome. It translates to locker room issues that hurt the club in the long run (LAST year)

Thanks
I just discovered this site very recently and it and all the people on it are fantastic. You get upset because you care.It helps to have this site for all the positives and unfortunately the negatives which we are all feeling.I will leave with these few comments. We need more leadership from our core players.Period.When your best player has more pim than points that’s a problem. As Melrose pointed out,why did all the passion and energy not show up until game 5?Where was it from the opening face off of game 1?For all the bad luck we had how many posts and crossbars did the Ducks hit?GAME 4…Worst performance I have seen by any team anywhere in a long time.If not for Boyle in game 3 there wouldn’t have been a game 5 or 6.Top 2 lines got outplayed, goaltender was good not great(how many goals allowed compared to shots…).We got exactly what we deserved. We didn’t come out ready to play, again, seemed to feel like we could turn it on when we wanted and by the time we figured out we couldn’t it was over.Teams that are playoff locks with months to go have struggled(see Capitals) down the stretch while teams fighting for their lives are playing meaningful games for weeks and sometimes months. The team needs to look at who has been here during the past 5-6 years and decide if it’s the coach, the system or as most people have to realize, the players. You can only coach so much and then, like training wheels on a bike, take them off and go.Our top 2 lines got badly outplayed.Again.Our goaltender got outplayed.Again.Our defense was soft.Again.These are the exact reasons,in my opinion that our playoff record is what it is.As much promise as our young players have, which one of them did anything this series other than Mitchell coming back? Will they be better next year, maybe but unless the leaders in the room change I feel we will be talking about this again about the same time next year. Why doesn’t the emotion and energy come while it matters.Game 5 post game and they seem to act like no big deal,Marleau,Thorton and Nabokov in particular. My girlfriend said only Boyle seemed to understand the situation they were in.I would hope they showed some reaction after their play for 4 of the 6 games. They barely won the 2 games, had no chance in 2 others and the other 2 were pretty even.Do they care?Absolutely but they don’t seem to play like it until the have to win 4 of 5.Off season should bring trades as changing coaches and changing the roster every year isn’t working. If management and coaches feel this is the best team then don’t make any changes and wait for the collapse, panic and change lines after 1 game, keep guys out there who aren’t being effective. The Warriors said it best a few years ago when, after a game 1 upset the Mavericks came out and switched players to match up with them. They had gone 62-20,and they were the ones making changes and the Warriors to a man said they knew they had them beaten mentally already. We needed our best players to be our best players and for the 3rd,4th,5th,ect. season they were not. Thanks to all who stayed with me this far and again thanks to all the fans on this blog who bring their passion, enthusiasm and love every single day and night.

No big deal
My only point in the Boyle statement was he actually seemed upset at what was going on while our big 3 seemed to act and talk as though it was a mid December game. And we all wonder why we get the performances out of these 3 every playoff year that we do.Bring on the Giants and Niners and Ill check back when the season starts and hopefully we will have made changes that don’t involve shuffling around the non core group and wonder why it turns out exactly the same.

What I Have Learned in the Past 15 or so Hours...
1. FTF hates kittens.
2. …and puppies.
3. We are all sad, and some people deal with that sadness by angering other people, and others deal with that sadness with unrelenting optimism. Both groups irritate me :-P.
4. That I was almost broke before game 5, and was already struggling to find the funds to afford a game 7 (if necessary, time TBD)…a second, a third, and a fourth round would have destroyed my finances for the rest of the year…a reality I was quite prepared for. However, maybe this is the silver lining I’ve been looking for.
5. Watching hockey when I don’t particularly care who wins is a completely different experience than watching the Sharks. And while I love the Sharks, watching the rest of the playoffs will be rather relaxing.
6. I found that I was most pissed off that I missed House and 24 to watch the Sharks lose their final game. Those are some good shows, man!
7. Nikolai Khabibulin will be a UFA this offseason…just sayin…
8. Life will go on, the Sharks have a solid core group coming back, and some serious talent waiting in the wings. McLellan will have a full year as the head man under his belt, and the players who come back will have a full year of McLellan’s system under their belts. The sky isn’t falling (although I’ll now need to find a new excuse for why there’s a hole in my wall), but changes will be made. Wilson knows what he’s doing, and, eventually, this team will live up to the hype.
Have fun bickering over whether the Sharks are awful and why we aren’t outraged. This season might have been a failure at the end (most seasons are, except for one lucky team), but the future is so bright I need new shades! New, teal shades, perhaps…
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

I got to see him play a lot this year and last year. I think he played better this year because he had some competition (Huet) and it was a contract year for him. That being said, I don’t think he would be an improvement over Nabby, or even a match for him. Khabibulin probably looked so good because Huet was so bad when he played.

I've always liked the Bulin Wall...
And he’s won a Cup. I think he’d be an improvement over Nabby and a decent stopgap til our prospects are ready a few years down the road (most likely). I guess I’m more thinking of him as an option if the Sharks end up trading Nabby and not getting a goalie back in return. It opens things up a bit this offseason, depending on which was DW decides to go.

But do we really want to make the Sharks into Tampa Bay 2004, version 2.0?

i'm "Disturbed and Speechless"
after reading the shit that went down while I was gone, thanks matt for completely pwning this clown, I think I can say that you spoke for me and probably most sane sharks fans. I don’t have a problem with dissenting opinion but not when you are so blatantly inaccurate and nonfactual.
I don't like you Detroit.

He got in trouble
for interfering with players who were not taking their shots. He was parking his golf cart in front of them, or just generally grabbing at players who were walking on the fairway.. That kind of stuff doesnt fly in golf so the country club asked him to leave.
Either that or his wife said he couldnt play and took his clubs off him.

JR to Pollack on the San Jose fans
"This whole town is so hockey oriented. You wouldn’t think it, but it’s one of the best hockey towns that I’ve ever seen," Roenick said. "It’s frustrating to me as a player to know that fans put all of their heart and their hope into us. And when we fall short, they hurt so bad. It’s almost like they bleed with us. It’s hard not to feel their passion. That’s why it’s so frustrating, knowing that we’re not bringing more for them. When you go to the arena at 4 in the afternoon, there’s already people waiting there. You just don’t see that in other places."

Just read that
My favorite part:
"I’m just going to sit back, relax and spend some time with my family. I’m going to talk to Doug and Todd in the next couple of weeks. I’m totally up in the air. I could go either way. I’m not going to make any rash decisions. I don’t want to pull a Brett Favre and say something when your emotions are running high."

this is my 4th year of being a fan of sharks/hockey in general. i’ve learned more this year than i learned the first 3 years combined.
here’s to some beneficial offseason moves and a better outcome next season.

I didn't realize
how worn out I was from all this until I sat down and promptly passed out for an hour, missing the end of the Caps game.
I had dreams about the Sharks last night, but I can’t recall what any of them were. I might be annoyingly upbeat in my approach to the early end, but that doesn’t mean I’m not just as emotional worn out by this great ride we call a season.
