Playoff Pick Em!: The Round That's Gonna Hurt To Watch

Middle_finger_cloud_medium

Keeping this quick because that's just how it has to be right now. Round one found here. I'll have the standings when I get around to it in the next couple days. Sorry for the delay folks.

Get your predictions in by Thursday at 6:00 PM. On a slightly related note, Carolina's win last night was insane.

Jump.

Star-divide

VAN 3 CHI 4: This one's strictly a toss up, but the Hawks are the sexy pick and I'm all kinds of deprived right now. Whatever the hell that means.

DET 4 ANA 2: Detroit's power play is from the depths of hell. On a related note, I'm in the Red Wings corner for this one. F Detroit blah blah blah, they didn't knock us out of the playoffs. If you're pulling for the Ducks I don't even know what to say.

BOS 4 CAR 2: Carolina is hot, but I just don't see it happening. That's such a joke snippet of analysis. Watching this round of playoffs is going to be so brutal.

WSH 2 PIT 4: I really like Jordan Staal and the Pens are a solid team. NBC is probably making out with themselves over the ratings this is going to get.

Go Heartbreak.

Scratch that. Go jump off a goddamn cliff, Heartbreak.

not from me

but I’ve heard a lot of people call for him to go for pretty stupid.

For instance (I made these up, not real quotations):

“What kind of an idiot trades away a great prospect in Bonino for an injured player like Huskins!”

“DW shoudl be fired for the Claude Lemieux experiment. Enough reclamation projects! Way to ruin the chemistry of the team!”

“Doug Wilson just wants to be the alpha male of the organization, he can’t stand to hire any players like Iginla or Morrow who would challenge his Alpha male status, and that’ why the team is soft! FIRE DW!!!”

by a10dency2ask on Apr 29, 2009 7:56 AM PDT up reply actions

he was a good prospect,

he needed time to develop his skating ability, but great playmaking ability and size he projected to be a top nine forward if he continued his development.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on Apr 29, 2009 8:28 AM PDT up reply actions

perhaps

but he wasn’t traded for huskins, he was traded for moen and huskins

by a10dency2ask on Apr 29, 2009 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I’v heard him described as “Pavelski-lite,” which is good, except we already have the actual Pavelski, who is only 24 years old and has yet to reach his full potential.

Oh, and in response to the Moen/Huskins trade, there was also a conditional pick in there. Since Huskins never played for the Sharks, we do not have to give the Ducks that pick. However, if they resign either Moen or Huskins, they have to give us a higher-round pick. Any picks for resignings by the Sharks have been rendered null and void because Huskins never played.

Doug Wilson knows what he’s doing.

by mymclife on Apr 29, 2009 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Pavelski lite!

that would have been exciting, except that Pavelski is already pretty lite anyway so it might have been a little of caffeine-free diet Pavelski lite. Or maybe not. Guess we’ll never know!

by a10dency2ask on Apr 29, 2009 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

I think he’s been described as Pavelski lite because, like when Pavelski was a prospect, he needs to work on his skating badly, but other than that has a very similar skill set as Pavs. But whether or not Bonino can improve his skating is a crap shoot – Pavelski was able to (as we’ve seen), but there is no guarantee that Bonino is going to be able to improve his skating enough to play at the NHL level.

by mymclife on Apr 29, 2009 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

A number of media sources are showing their ignorance the last couple days. For instance, ESPN said that DW will “blow up” the team and start all over and that idiot Purdy, at the Merc, says that it’s likely Marleau will be traded.

Why I Hate Purdy - Reason #59

“Our beloved Los Tiburones”…

Translation – “Our beloved The Sharks.”

In Spanish, unlike in French, the definite article is optional. Saying “Our beloved Tiburones” would actually be more correct. If you are a fluent Spanish speaker (stand up and be heard, Workthecycle!), feel free to confirm or refute this statement.

I also hate that Purdy feels the need to ALWAYS use “beloved” in front of Los Tiburones. Try putting a new series of words together.

If this seems trivial, do bear in mind that it’s Reason #59. #1 – 58 are much more substantial.

Personally...

I’m not going to predict all of the series, but I would like to see the Ducks take out Detroit (making us look a little better) and then take the first three games of the conference final, before behind swept that last 4 games. Either that or in the Stanley Cup championship, whichever would hurt more.

by SharksFanTillDeath on Apr 29, 2009 8:44 AM PDT reply actions

I agree...

but I think it’s a bit of ostrich syndrome. If the Ducks show that they are really good this postseason, that means that it wasn’t exactly just a problem with the Sharks being really bad, right? I don’t need the Ducks to beat Detroit for that, though, just maybe two wins is enough.

As for the other series, I just want to see some good hockey. That’s the kid in me, I suppose.

Boston as a sports city pisses me off, and I don’t want the Bruins to add to their decade of champions (plus, do you know how much more shit we’re going to get regarding the Thornton trade? I am a bit bitter about Campbell, but my rational side has largely won out (he sucks defensively, is not physical at all, his salary screwed over Chicago’s cap, and Boyle is freaking amazing). At the risk of an in-house fight between FTF admins, I respectfully disagree with Mr. Plank. I do indeed hate the Ducks more than the Red Wings, but the second most intolerable thing about this season (after a Sharks loss, of course) would be consecutive Cups for Detroit.

For the record, my ideal would be for Chicago to take the West (I would settle for Vancouver, too), and then for either Boston or Washington to win it all. All four of those fanbases have waited an awfully long time (1963 for Chicago, 1972 for Boston, and NEVER for Vancouver and Washington) for a Cup.

by ang6666 on Apr 29, 2009 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Why?

He costs WAY too much for a third line winger – we can get three players for him, which we’ll need since Murray and Vlasic’s salaries go WAY up next season (regardless of whether we’ll still pay $5 million for Blake – which realistically is not going to happen).

It sucks – Cheech is behind only Pavel Bure and Alex Ovechkin when it comes to Rocket Richard Trophy winners’ goal production. Bure hit 59 I think, and Ovie had 65 last year, and tied Cheech’s 56 this year. Those days are obviously behind him now – and yet with a new center on a new team, his production might improve. We’ve had three seasons to see if he’d do the same as 2005-06, to no avail.

If we get three players for Cheech then we’re dealing with a GM that has the mental capacity of one Glen Sather.

Detroit will manhandle Anaheim – their cycling is far superior to ours, and Hiller will have his hands full. The quality of their shots will be vastly better than ours, AND their quantity will be about equal to ours.

1 person has

an infant from Mexico who was brought in to the US from treatment. This isn’t a new thing though. This has been around for awhile. I guess they had a scare in the 70s too.

bird flu, swine flu, man bear big flu. Whatever. As an asthmatic, I worry, but not really. The flu itself is deadly. People seem to forget that.

Aw shit, I read about that earlier. I live a couple blocks from Branham and graduated from there in ’03. Scary stuff.

My school played (?) Branham in Track yesterday and now all the kids are freaking out. I’m keeping antibacterial hand wipes around now…

Anti-bacterial handwipes won't do anything

with a virus… Better off with soap and hot water.

by Chicago Shark on Apr 29, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Handwipes

Yeah, I know that, but I didn’t buy them for myselves. Kids stop freaking out when you have things to offer like handwipes, that crappy lotion, and tissues. Then you can get back to the lesson.

I had fun watching the Sharks, point of being a fan right?

Hoping for a CHI-Anyone final series.

DET 4 ANA 3 (in 7 overtimes and after the winning goal is scored both teams spontaneously combust).

BOS 4 CAR 2
WAS 4 PIT 3 (I have no idea here).

This part was mean, but fair
Jumbo Joe Thornton in particular gets more than his share of blame when it comes to postseason failure. He led the Sharks in scoring this spring (four of his six assists in the series were on San Jose goals)

So I have to ask

after re-watching the Canes win, is Brodeur being called out for choking? Are the Devils? What about the Rangers? Anyone else get the Sharks treatment?

I’m curious what the general media treatment is towards those two teams their early exit.

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com

by CTGray on Apr 29, 2009 5:51 PM PDT reply actions

No, we’re the only choker in the league…but then again, we won the President’s Trophy and are gonna catch the heat. That and we’re a west coast team, and don’t count anyway

by Dave Valentine on Apr 29, 2009 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

we’d get that heat if we hadn’t won the trophy. Unless that was just some weird fluke the last few season. I somehow doubt that.

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com

by CTGray on Apr 29, 2009 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I think the media loves to pick on San Jose…for a combination of reasons, including all the early exits from the playoffs after being pre season favorites for so many years. And I DO believe in the East Coast bias. It’s much easier for them to pummel the Sharks.

Pittsburgh is good enough to win it all. Washington I’m not sure is there yet. This should be the most exciting series of the 4 to watch.

Let the 2nd round begin!

Detroit 4 Anaheim 2 (Anaheim only plays out to 6 b/c Hiller keeps the pace up.)

Vancouver 4 Chicago 2 (Khabby steals a game. Luongo has a bad game)

Boston 4 Carolina 2 (Cam Ward steals a game. Staal’s magic continues. Boston has too much depth though)

Pittsburgh 4 Washington 3 (is Varlamov the real deal? We’ll find out. He’ll be moving from facing club hockey offense to Div I offense.) this is the series I am anticipating the most.
