Have to run to class, but for the record I don’t think Marleau, Thornton, or Boyle should be traded. At all. If he pulls the trigger on that I freak out and start blogging about my NHL 09 team again.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
100% agree
And I’m not being a yes-man. I hope the fact that you left off Nabby from your “untouchables” list was just an editorial oversight, and not what I think it is…
I have to run out tonight, so we can talk about this manana.
Fear The Fin = Anyone who doesn’t like fighting in the NHL can go watch poker on ESPN. [Jamie Baker]
I definitely think Nabokov is a solid goaltender, and do not think we have any prospects who would be able to shoulder the load at this moment in time (Griess, Sexsmith et al).
But I’m going to be honest- Nabokov has lost a step. In my eyes, he and Kiprusoff are built in the same mold. Both are goaltenders who rely on their ability to challenge shooters, and therefore, their reflexes to stop pucks. It’s no surprise those resulted in five hole goals, not just in this series, but throughout the entire season.
He’s going to be a free agent after this season. The cap situation looks bleak.
I’m not saying he should be traded. The return would have to be very good (along with us getting an NHL caliber starting goaltender somewhere in the mix).
But I don’t think he is untouchable. Far from it in fact.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Yeah, I tend to agree
although, I’m not so sure about Nabby….contingent on what we could get for him….I don’t think we have a goalie in the system to take his place right now.
The one thing that sticks out to me is that DW is brutally honest. How can you not respect that guy?

Marleau should not be traded. Period. The guy works his ass off for the team. There were a few games this year where he literally willed the team to win – like the 5-4 win against St. Louis, the 2-1 win over Dallas (well, Turco also played a part in that), the 2-1 OT win over the Canucks, and so on and so forth. Remember when his son was born the day the Sharks were in Chicago, so he stayed in San Jose for that day, then flew out that night to be there for the Nashville game the next day? The guy played in the post-season with a sprained MCL, and still managed to get both GWG for the Sharks. He had a career year in pretty much every aspect of the game. He stays.
And there is no way in hell that Boyle will be traded. Period. Even now, I laugh whenever I see old forum posts reacting to the trade – “OMG Boyle is horrible defensively and Carle is so much better and has a much better upside! This is a horrible trade by DW!” The guy proved that he is a threat both offensively (strong arm goal) and defensively (remember that one play where he slid into the net to block a puck because Nabby was out of position?). His need to win is greater than any other player’s, probably in the entire league.
Thornton… While his inconsistent playoff play is maddening (dominant one night, crisp passes to the other team the next), he is a superstar in the league, and instantly makes whatever team he is on better. After all, as soon as he was put on a line with Cheechoo and Grier in one game, Grier promptly scored two goals (which is a feat that was thought to be impossible). If this early exit causes him to find the fire to become Angry Joe every game, we could see him shed that “playoff choker” label (although, 35 points in 41 playoff games with the Sharks isn’t something to sneeze at).
Oh, and more people that I think are untouchable? Mitchell (my love for him knows no bounds), Pavelski, Vlasic, and Murray (he really stepped it up in the playoffs). I mean, I love this roster and pretty much every guy on the team, but these are the only guys that, if DW trades them, would make me start wondering if Wilson was insane.

All those guys are young players who have pretty good cap hits, so I’m right on board with you. Throw Seto into that mix as well. Anytime we have an opportunity to take advantage of personnel outplaying their contracts, I’m on board.
Mitchell won’t get a raise this year either, which is phenomenal. Unfortunately that probably means a one-two year deal (along the lines Clowe got last season), but I’m fine with that.

It was more a response to the fact that Wilson, “I’m not going to sit here and just say it will be minor tweaks.” Those are the three guys I feel would not be defined as a “minor tweak” (i.e. the core of the team).
We all know Boyle had an excellent series, as well as an excellent season.

one thing i have seen a lot on those crazy sites...
a lot of people blame Claude Lemieux for the Sharks downfall this season. What’s everyone’s opinion on whether or not he had any affect on the chemistry of the team? I personally think he had nothing to do with anything
by a10dency2ask on Apr 29, 2009 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions
I just think people are trying to explain why we got beat by a goaltender who was on acid. Of course there were other things involved, but if you look at the series in general, it really boils down to goaltending.
Blaming Lemieux is just bonks in my opinion. There’s a multitude of shoulders this gets thrown on before it ever comes down to Claude hahahaha.

I could see them considering Nabby, though myself I’d be pretty hesitant to do it
But I have no idea how our goalie depth looks in the minors, so I’m curious:
What goalie prospects does this club have if any? I sort of remember some dude who played some before boucher came aboard, dont remember much about him though.
Off the top of my head...
Greiss, Sexsmith, Stalock, Dakers, and Sateri. All drafted after 2004. Greiss is the starter in Worcester, Sexsmith is still in the WHL but does really well, Stalock just finished his stint in juniors and is now backing up Greiss, Dakers was the backup for Greiss but is recovering from hip surgery, and Sateri is playing professionally in Europe. All are still several years away from starting in the NHL.

The public school in my district is Del Mar sooo yeaaahhh.
I know a ton of kids whose parents are season ticket holders and they are no where that cool. They’re the annoying rich kids. They all have their Thornton jerseys and I ask them about the game and they say “what game?”
I’m in Spanish so I can’t formulate Shark sentences. I just can’t use Tiburones
I had fun watching the Sharks, point of being a fan right?
Oh
in that case it’s the same thing in Spanish except you put an accent on the “e”
I’m starting to question if I should have taken French haha
I had fun watching the Sharks, point of being a fan right?
in french you wouldn't pronounce the S after sharks

I love you guys
But I’m not doing the vampire hours anymore….I’m outta here
Fear the Fin....where being an old guy isn't all bad, and the 2nd round can be bad on the heart
I play the drums!
pretty well too… and no, not on “rock band”
Yes, I'm from the tropics. Yes, I love hockey. What's not to get?
I could definately see Nabby going...
He appears to be in decline, he makes a boatload of money, and he could bring back some quality in a trade. Boucher could probably handle things for now (if we resign him), maybe a Khabibulin signing…I’m not sure who else is out there or availiable in trade. But Nabby is probably the highest profile player I could see possibly getting traded. I’m not saying its likely, or wise, but he’s definately not untouchable.
Grier probably won’t be back. I could see Ehrhoff getting traded. Blake may retire. We’ll see, but there will most likely be something none of us expect as well. Should be an interesting offseason. Build us a winner DW!
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!
Probably not.
DW seems to think he has a lot of potential. But we will see. If the return is there, may as well pull the trigger.

I think he gets another year
to show if his shots can actually get ON NET.
The fat lady is clearing her pipes. Time to shove some corn down her throat.
plus, as i talked about before
the PP was much more effective this year with him on the point, if you look at the numbers. Plus I felt he gave a lot of effort in the playoffs, he just makes too many mental errors
by a10dency2ask on Apr 29, 2009 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Ehrhoff is good trade bait; young-ish (I believe he’s 27) and a fast puck-moving defenseman in an era where offensive defensemen are the trendiest things. His speed will be missed, but his inability to shoot the puck on goal and the fact that he occasionally forgets that he’s a defenseman probably won’t. However, I really don’t expect DW to trade him unless we get a fantastic return. He’s just not untouchable.
but i’m tellin you guys, look at the PP numbers

You’ve got a very good point there, and with Blake (maybe?) leaving we’re going to need a shot from the point. Also, we have to think about ditching a lefty as well- San Jose doesn’t have many of those on the blueline (Vlasic is solid, but he doesn’t have that cannon we’re going to need).
If he does get dealt though, I give you……

Just so we can hide Vesce in it right?
Doesn’t count as too many men if he’s hiding in the beard.

Problem is, it’s likely that thing takes up a roster spot of it’s own.

i think they keep semenov
possibly the most improved player over the course of the season
by a10dency2ask on Apr 29, 2009 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions
Aye, and for all the jokes we make about him, I still hold some semblance of faith that he will develop into a solid 5-6 guy who will be able to contribute on the power play. Dude has a decent shot.
Plus side, he’s going to be cheap. Two-three years at probably under one mil per.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
plus i... sort of like him ?:|
why not, he’s a little bit endearing

Semmy WILL rough you up (cause he can’t fight you).
I recall you calling him a very poor (very very very very very poor) man’s version of Rob Blake.
I had fun watching the Sharks, point of being a fan right?
A homeless man’s Rob Blake. As I mentioned above though, he’s a good fit in the cap crazy world we live in.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Just don’t tell Morti we’re homeless. He might start taking shots at us.

what if he’s a rich homeless man!
Ha I just ruined your logic

Why would a homeless man
be rich?

I’m not saying that he’s not good – he is. And I know that he’s been really good on the PP this year, even with his amazingly inaccurate shot. Its just, if DW gets an amazing offer for Ehrhoff (like, I dunno, Keith for Ehrhoff+), then he should pull the trigger. But unless there is an overpayment by the other side, I’m pretty sure DW will keep him. He’s just not totally safe from being traded, you know?
I think DW
called some boys back home to oil up madame la guillotine after game 6.

You’re on fire tonight sir. Somebody put this man out!
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I THOUGHT WE TOLD YOU NEVER TO COME BACK HERE ;)
In all seriousness though, blowing this team’s core up (Marleau, Thornton etc) is not a move I would make.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
A major change could be anything!
the core of players
is what needs to be broken up.
Something’s fishy in there. Without these guys, the team can’t perform to it’s fullest and it showed.
I dont think what you wrote is going to happen, but I can see how something like a trade of a couple of guys would be considered a major change, rather than a tweak.
Sooooo...
What do you guys think about a Brian Gionta for the 3rd line to fill in for Cheechoo if he departs?? Thoughts?
by SetoThorMarChooSki on Apr 29, 2009 9:21 PM PDT reply actions
I don't know
Gionta really doesn’t seem like a good fit. He aint getting any younger and he’s a munchkin.

I think
We need another Mitchell, speed kills… With Seto on the top line and 2 more speed demons at our disposal, I think that might help our “dump and chase” philosopy.
by SetoThorMarChooSki on Apr 29, 2009 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions
I dunno if we have a “dump and chase” philosophy- I think the Anaheim series was more of a “we have a solid frakking defensive core that’s going to stand you up at the blueline while we jam four in the neutral zone” philosophy.
By the way, and I’m not making excuses, but what a horrid draw in the first round. Good Lord.
Anyways, rostercourse has been fun. Off to open up a new thread of goodies.
See ya in ten.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
True
Anaheim was on a roll coming into the playoffs and they carried that momentum straight through us. Not to mention whenever you get a chance to boot your arch rivals out in the first round you are going to be playing hockey like a bunch of retards on fire. Tsk Tsk, all bad.

I like Gionta, but he’s making something around the high upper 3’s per this season. Doubtful it fits into our cap space ya know?
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Gionta? Upper 3's
looks like cheech wasn’t the only one to cash in on the post lockout goal madness!

Just checked the cap- it’s freaking 4 mil. Wow.
