Mile High Hockey

The Sharks are 0-1 after a game in which Corey Perry has a run-in with their goaltender.

Chicago's in Nashville at 5:00; St. Louis is in Phoenix at 7:00. Talk about some big time games for the Sharks. Keep an eye on those folks- we might have a triple game thread extraordinaire on our hands tonight.

Western Clinch: 3

President's Clinch: 6

A duece tonight would go a long way.

Prediction: Sharks win 5-0. Goals by Boyler, Marleau (anyone else have a feeling he's suiting up tonight?), McGinn, Thornton and Michalek. Peter Budaj's magical run at the Vezina (Budaj or Die!) comes to a horrible end.

Go Sharks.

Whoops

Pierre must be stuck in last year. And to make matters worse for himself, that went up Saturday and he still hasn’t fixed it. Guess ESPN’s trying to back up Mike Chen here.

Was it really necessary to bring Budaj into this? Jeez. He’s actually been playing well as of late…

That was kind of the joke. Don’t worry, I got mad love for Budaj.

Budaj or Die! was actually my friend’s slogan for when he took his created team in NHL 09 to the Cup.

Patience

Although it would be nice to see Patty playing tonight, I seem to reflect on what happened to JR. Roenick seemed to come back from his shoulder injury and reinjured himself within a matter of two games. I seem to think that Patty knows whats best for him, and if he feels ready to return he will.

by shrkfn91 on Apr 7, 2009 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm not saying rush him...

I’m just saying that there’s cautious, and overcautious. If he’s healthy, we don’t want his first game back to be the playoffs. I’d rather he get a game or two to get up to speed…all things being equal. I personally think everyone else will be back on Thursday, but that’s just a gut feeling.

This whole “no one watches” thing is a self full filling prophecy. If you don’t show it, no one will watch it and then you can show number proving that no one watches it, so you can justify continuing not to show it.

Psychic Friends infomercial beat the NHL on ESPN ratings

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on Apr 7, 2009 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm sure they beat a lot of things

doesn’t mean I agree with ESPN’s decision.

What would be nice is to see how much advertising money they were throwing at it and how it was marketed. You don’t get ratings just by showing something and expecting people to know it’s on via osmosis. It’s all about promotion.

Fact of the matter is hockey is probably one of the ONLY things that would get me to tune into ESPN. I can get better sports coverage online and I usually do.

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com

by CTGray on Apr 7, 2009 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I can’t say how much they’d gain or lose without actually hard numbers in front of me. I could make things up to prove my point either way, but that doesn’t do anyone any good.

Ratings, dollars, time zones, marketing, all would help in understand what the cost of NHL coverage was vs the cost of covering, say, poker, which I suspect has dropped off in popularity after the fad bubble burst.

They can do whatever they want, but I do wish they’d stop snubbing it. Don’t make fun of, just don’t bother with it at ALL if you aren’t going to show it. The half-assed online coverage is a joke, and yet they seem to feel they need to maintain that. I wonder why that is…oh yeah, it has an audience. Any audience that has dollars to spend.

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com

by CTGray on Apr 7, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

you can market hockey till you are blue in the face,

it’s not going to make people watch it, the fact of the matter is that it’s not popular and that is why they don’t show, like it or not that’s just the way it is. For non-hockey fans watching hockey on TV is one of the most boring things you can do, thus the infomercial ratings higher than hockey as well as bowling with ratings the same as hockey.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on Apr 7, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

for non football and basketball fans, watching those sports is extremely boring and I’d chose an infomercial over them, but they can still air those because they have more a of root in our culture. Liking baseball and football and basketball is expected.

But I find them boring, and I know a lot of other people who do too. Maybe they shouldn’t air those any more either. You know, because they’re boring.

(I really do love arguing with you by the way. Which is probably why I keep doing it)

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com

by CTGray on Apr 7, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

That's not entirely true.

A big part of successful marketing is how you do it and how well you do it. Sadly, the NHL does a piss-poor job of it. Probably because the front office is grossly incompetent and possibly borderline retarded, but that’s just my theory. And putting games on two networks that are not readily available is just shooting themselves in the collective foot. The mind boggling part of how poorly the NHL does in the States is how the game really markets itself.

Hockey is something that on paper should appeal to your average American. It’s fast, dangerous, and takes lots of skill. It’s a product that should sell itself. Hell, take someone who has never seen a game in their life, live on otherwise, to a game, answer their questions, and you’ll have made a new fan. I’ve done this several times myself.

I’m sure there has got to be someone out there who could sell this sport. The league just needs to find them.

Bud Selig,

for all his ineptitude on many game related issues, has done a very good job running MLB as a business, which it is. The league revenue has increased massively with him at the helm, probably through good TV and ad deals, and attendance has gone up. As a businessman selling a product, Selig and the MLB front office is light years ahead of Bettman and the NHL.

And how many people can say they’ve picked their nose in a Congressional hearing? That’s a measure of success right there.

Hardly anyone in this country likes soccer, but the World Cup is so hyped up that it seems half the country becomes soccer fans if for only a month.

Yes you can, but...........

ESPN didn’t market it that well. Even then, I still remember ESPN getting fairly good ratings. Then when they didn’t like the NHL deal, they dropped their coverage and if anything seemed like they tried to ruin hockey. I’ve read several articles about how ESPN analysts started criticizing the NHL right after the deal fell threw. In fact the only time they gave coverage was to cover something negative. I will agree with you that money is a big part of it. But I think ESPN were horrible sports with the NHL.

Note: I have never had cable, so all this info is from articles I read, friends I talked with, and exaggerated truth.

I might actually watch ESPN,

if they had anything I actually wanted to see. Showing my favorite sport and not trying to force feed me the Red Sox and Yankees (sorry Dustin) would be a good start.

As it is all I visit their website for is Bucci’s column and their MLB Gamecast. And as soon as MLB gets their version working so it isn’t 3+ innings behind, I’ll only go there for one thing.

nhl network is a good place to go,

i personally like their coverage but it’s all i got so it is what it is. As far as espn goes, I love hockey but I am a sports guy so I love espn as it is the sports leader, unfortunately they don’t cover the sport because it really isn’t of interest to a MAJORITY of the country; whereas the other sports are liked by a MAJORITY of the country.

As I said,

my problem with ESPN is the content. I’m not going to watch poker, basketball, or golf because I don’t like them. I don’t watch most of their baseball coverage because they don’t show teams that I’m interested in seeing.

That said, they also have some serious quality problems. As much as I love listening to Jon Miller call a game, rather than watch Sunday Night Baseball this season, my friends and I instead have a pool on how long until Steve Phillips and Joe Morgan drive him crazy. Jim Caple is in my opinion their best baseball writer and he’s stuck writing Page 2 fluff.

It would also really help if they did more than just barely acknowledge the existence of any team located west of the Mississippi.

According to this blog entry at Puck The Media, that advertising money was minimal at best. In fact, ESPN and ABC’s promotion of the NHL was horrible, and got worse when they got the rights to broadcast NBA games.

Way too many people who wish for the NHL to return to ESPN forget that the network canceled NHL2night, and refused to revive it when the league approached them for a new cable deal after the lockout.

by idunno723 on Apr 7, 2009 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I would think

Staubitz would be a better deal. He is a young player that is learning how to play the game. Claude is an old guy, probably with no more future in the NHL.

Than again I’m not the coaching staff, and they know way more than me so they should be making the decision. I trust them 100% that this is a good idea.

by idunno723 on Apr 7, 2009 6:13 PM PDT up reply actions

As of right now

I think Staubitz would be more valuable than Claude in his old age.

and if you’re for the “young players need experience to do better” Staubtiz could be in that position

by idunno723 on Apr 7, 2009 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it would be good and all to have him, veteran presence and stuff. But I think having a young player learning the game is more valuable.

Plus I support T-Mac and all of his decisions 100%

by idunno723 on Apr 7, 2009 6:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it also has to do with the Worcester Sharks

They’re currently in a battle for the final spot in the playoffs, and while they’ve been doing pretty well without all of the guys that have been called up, I’m sure we all know the feeling of getting some players back on the roster and ready to kick some ass.

I mean, getting Cavanagh, Vesce, McGinn, and Staubitz back from their call-ups, as well as signing Couture? That’s a huge influx of offensively ability (save Staubitz) that will help the WorSharks get that final spot and hopefully go far in the playoffs. And having a guy that is known around the NHL as someone who beat down one of the well-known pests adds that extra edge.

by mymclife on Apr 7, 2009 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

The 67’s were eliminated from the OHL playoffs, and so Couture signed with Worcester to play out the rest of their season to get some pro experience.

by Diamondback15 on Apr 7, 2009 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey

Not going to the game (boo), and I probably won’t be around here either, because of an ungodly amount of homework.

Oh, and my reaction to Lemieux and Grier coming back – not as excited as I thought I would be. McGinn and Staubitz (specifically, the part of Staubitz that beat in Tootoo’s face) really grew on me, and not the best memories are popping up when I remember Grier and Lemieux playing. But hey – only four players injured now, two of which have never even suited up for us this season! That’s good. It would be great, except that both Clowe and Marleau are kind of important top 6 wingers and provide a lot of our scoring, and they are still out.

by mymclife on Apr 7, 2009 6:12 PM PDT reply actions

I’ve always liked Grier, but I agree with idunno on Staubitz over Lemieux, personally.

Yes, I'm from the tropics. Yes, I love hockey. What's not to get?

by workthecycle on Apr 7, 2009 6:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I dunno- Grier brings a lot to the table with his PK time. As good as McGinn has been (don’t get me wrong, he’s tight), it’s not like he’s exactly lit the scoreboard up during his time here. To me it’s not really even a question who I prefer.

In my eyes it’s (in order of importance) 1) Grier by a longshot 2) McGinn 3) Lemieux and 4) Staubitz. You can make a case for Staubitz over Lemieux, but I think they’re fairly similar players to warrant bringing in the credentials. Lemieux gets the nod there, and the slight nod overall.

Don’t get me wrong – its great they’re back – but my selective memory only selected the more negative parts of their play this season. And plus in Plihal’s return, he tipped the puck into his own net, so I’m a bit more cautious about returns nows, no matter how arbitrary it may be.

by mymclife on Apr 7, 2009 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Carolina just beat the Islanders, 9-0. I almost feel sorry for them, although I do realize that them losing out is for the best if they want to get Tavares.

And the Sens beat Boston in regulation, so now the B’s are 3 points behind with no games in hand!

Hmm.

Not sure, I haven’t calculated the factors for tiebreakers and what not.

They probably don’t factor in the win tiebreakers etc. I think that it may be possible for the Sharks to get 3 and still clinch the Presidents’, but 4 means it’s a mathematical certainty.

pitching

not a problem. offense will determine if they will contend. with their pitching staff, they only really need like 4 runs per game.

I was following on ESPN Gameday from work and got worried that Lincey was pulled cuz he was hurt. Good to see the offense get off to a great start. Hopefully we can keep it going for the rest of the season (and maybe get Cain some run support for the first time in 3 years?). Lame 9th inning though…

Coincidentially

I was watching the 1981 movie Miracle on Ice today (it was on TV, and I was bored). It was soooo bad. Well, aside from the scenes where they played hockey. But I’m 99% sure that they used actual footage from the game. So everything that they did do was extremely corny, with bad acting and a horrible script. Like, an exchange during the game right before that last-minute first period goal:
“I’m leaving. Nothing can happen in the last eight seconds!”
“No, wait. Stay. Look!”
Cue the puck moving from the USA’s blue line to Tretiak, then Johnson scoring the goal.

But, yeah. Miracle (the Disney one) is amazing.

I want to see some domination. It’s three games before the playoffs. This is one of the worst teams in the league. We’ve done a decent job of keeping the puck away from Nabby, but it’s no time for moral victories.

Wow

That game really kind of sucked. 1-0, in a shootout? Thank goodness that Nabby was playing, at least. Well, sort of. I don’t really know – I was busy doing homework. But I don’t think I missed much.

Not much to say about this game except that it was completely pathetic. Some games, when the score is tied 0-0 and it goes to the shootout, it means that the goalies have been amazing. In this game it meant that the offense was crap. I still can’t believe that Pavs was the only one to “score.” Especially against a team that has 10 AHL call-ups, four of which on defense. McLellan has to be pissed at them – they have all this offensive talent and skill, and nothing happens.

I really, really, really hope what they’re saying is true and Marleau is coming back on Thursday. They need him.

View from Colorado

I had the pleasure of watching this game from the Outback, and then my hotel, in Fort Collins CO. My late father had a saying which I will always cherish “I would rather be lucky than good”. Tonight, the Sharks were DAMN lucky. Lucky that they had #20 in net.

I love the Sharks; but this effort, other than from a few people, sucked. It was great to have Grier back, and the energy that he brings. It will probably take a couple of games to get him fully back, but I think he rubbed off on some folks in Period 1. And Lemieux looked surprisingly strong as well, with a couple of really good chances. But I still think Jumbo has a malady of some type; there were too many times tonight where he was coasting. If that is our top line, we’re in trouble………And I’m gonna bash Mac here as well, he didn’t do a lot to stir up the pot, and I think on our power plays we just kinda had the attitude of “we’re here to score, please lay down and die”, and (to their credit) the Avs didn’t die. We had as many bad breaks as the Avs did tonight, what with rolling pucks, posts, shitty ice, etc. But we did not bring our A-game tonight, and I refuse to believe that Marleau is the sole source of that problem. Maybe we’re just tired of getting beat up every night, or playing for the last 3 months with so many injuries. We HAVE to stop relying on Nabby night in and night out to bail our ass out for our offensive woes. He deserves to be on the winning end of an 8-0 blowout.

Throw eggs at me if you will, but right now, the very possible Cup winner is not the Sharks, but the Black Hawks.

GO SHARKS!!

idunno723's take on the game...

In the form of bullet points! (because I know how to mwhahaha)

  • What the hell’s up with that organ Enter Sandman?!??
  • Overall game was slow. really really slow
  • Nabby made my day. He is amazing!
  • Budaj cheated. No way the game should be 0-0
  • Powerplay was not okay (hehe I ryhmeded)
  • Pavelski played awesomely well. 8 shots, he’s the most consistent player

and finally:

  • Do the fans really have to yell “TAKE A SHOT”?? It gets so annoying. The players on the ice know when to take the shot. Here’s how the game went:

Setoguchi skates behind the net. Drunk guy #1 says TAKE THE SHOT

I just think it’s really unnecessary to say Take the shot. In OT during the PP when the crowd was yelling “Take the shot” to the max and borderline booing it puts pressure on the players. They started taking shots, ones they shouldn’t have. An Av’s player is right in front of them. TAKE THE SHOT. They do, it ricochets off of him and the puck get’s out of the zone.

So in conclusion, I’ll take the win. Nabby and Pavelski were awesome. They should have played better, but got the two points which matter the most

  • The chips kept breaking. How am I gonna pick up those beans!

They tasted good, got the job done, but costing 8 bucks! not worth it IMO. + I spilled a little bit on my jersey!

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

by Mr. Plank on Apr 8, 2009 1:37 AM PDT up reply actions

So I have a Question

As far as I can tell,

-The Sharks have 2 games left with a current 117 points and a possible 121
-The Wings have 3 games left with a current 111 points and a possible 117
-The Bruins have 3 games left with a current 112 points and a possible 118

So if we win one of our two remaining, we have the president’s trophy. Or if we lose both in overtime. Or if the wings lose a game and the bruins lose in regulation.

But what happens if we end up with the same amount of points? How is the trophy, and more importantly the home ice advantage decided?

by perkins.kit on Apr 8, 2009 12:43 AM PDT reply actions

First tiebreaker is total wins. If the Wings win out and the Sharks lose out, that would leave them with 54 and 53 respectively. Therefore, the Wings would have the tiebreaker. Same goes for Boston.

Second tiebreaker would be points earned in games played between the teams (head to head), and the third is goal differential. Since we beat the Bruins in February, we hold that tiebreaker in the event that we lose our remaining games while Boston goes 2-0-1.

Like you said, we win we’re in. Magic number for West is 1 (it’s how the West was won!), and 2 for Presidents’ Trophy.

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

by Mr. Plank on Apr 8, 2009 1:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m still under the impression that if we end up tied w/ Boston, it would skip the second tiebreaker since we only played them once…

If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included

Going to the third tiebreaker (The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season.), we’re getting smoked. Not sure if they do Total +/- (BOS 80 > SJS 56), or Net +/- (BOS 61 > SJS 21), but either way, we’re way behind.

So… as much as it pains me to say this, I’m half-hoping that Detroit wins and Boston manages at least a point on Thursday. That way, it’ll be that much more exciting when we take BOTH the Western Conference and the President’s Trophy when we beat the ’Yotes!

I’ve never liked clinching because another team loses (although sometimes you take what you get).

Sorry, but no

I don’t care, I want to be extra-sure that the Sharks get the President’s Trophy. If its because of other teams’ failings, then so be it. Phoenix has played us surprisingly well this year, and if we get another performance like last night, I’m not sure that the win is such a given.

And plus, tomorrow’s game will have plenty enough excitement being the last home game of the regular season (we could end up with only 5 regulation losses at home!!!) and fan appreciation night, as well as the ability (no matter what happens) to clinch the Pres.
