It's been a goddamned pleasure to watch this team for 80 games.
Patrick Marleau and Ryane Clowe will be playing tonight, meaning the hope for an extended playoff run is at the forefront of everyone's minds. All year the company line from the MSM (as well as this site, friends, and readers) has been, "The Sharks will be judged in the playoffs."
At the root of that argument, I agree. The last three seasons have been painful when it comes to the second round (what's that ol' saying? Ah, April flowers bring May showers, there it is). It's no surprise the fanbase, and most importantly the players, have been unhappy with those results.
Unfortunately, it's easy to get all tangled up in waiting for next week. I've been there. You've been there. Hell, we're there right now. These stomach butterfly's are going to cause some severe tornados any day now.
Digression. Eh. I guess that's what you guys are paying for.
San Jose Sharks. Regular season. What have you enjoyed the most out of this year? Here's four random ones I plucked out of a hat:
4) Winning with Worcester. Derek Joslin is solid, and will be a reliable bottom pairing guy in the future. Jamie McGinn may find his way onto the playoff roster, and if current trends hold, will be playing in San Jose next season. Brad Staubitz brings energy to the team night in night out, and delivered the best fight performance since Mickey the pikey. Cavanagh and Vesce have both made the most of their time up with big club.
The fact that the Sharks were able to deal with rotating injuries for nearly half this season (at the same time giving these aforementioned players valuable NHL minutes) and still amass 117 points up to this current moment speaks volumes about the organization.
3) The emergence of Milan Michalek's defensive capabilities. I think this article from earlier in the season sums it up nicely, but for those of who deathly afraid of linkage (unrelated to shrinkage), here's the gist of it: Michalek has seen a vast boom in PK time, and has committed himself to the defensive zone. $4.3M/per worried me a bit considering he was a "sideboards and circles" type guy for most of his time in San Jose, but he's been knockout this season.
2) The Blueline. Not much to be said that hasn't been said before, but this core has flat out blown me away. Vlasic has gone from "good with potential" to "franchise player". Boyle has speed and an uncanny knack to read the play. Murray has highlight hits. Ehrhoff has had flashes of brilliance which make you salivate at how great he could be. Luko has been solid, tailing off a tad lately but that's cool he'll pick it up go get em' man! Blake has a cannon and a great presence in front of the net. Even Semenov has made strides*.
This is the best defensive squad we have ever had in San Jose.
*Here's a Semenov related prediction from last season to emphasize how far he's come. On a side note, I've really been mailing those predictions in; this one's a damn near novel. On a second side note, I'm pretty sure they did give up the lead with 30 seconds left. On a third side note, no more freaking side notes.
Prediction: Sharks win 2-1. San Jose leads with under 30 seconds remaining, but Alexei Semenov (who managed to crack the line-up for reasons unknown) puts one past Nabokov into his own net. Coincidentally, his choice for the Calder Trophy is Niklas Backstrom.
Redemption comes in the shootout however, when Ron Wilson elects to have Semenov shoot in the final round to clinch the game (TSN later reports Wilson managed to down a fifth of Bacardi before the opening faceoff). Gliding casually down to the net, Semenov hits a rough patch in the ice, falls on his stomach, and manages to headbutt the puck in for the game winner.
1) Patrick Marleau. Funny story- when I formed the blogging juggernaut We Bleed Teal last season with my friend Dan Cavey (one post all time, sad story), we considered naming it, "Patty Is Our Captain" in the midst of all the rumors flying around that he would be traded. Our way of showing support. It was scrapped due to the fact that Doug Wilson had stopped returning our phone calls, and we didn't know what that meant.
Marleau does it all- scoring, backchecking, working the corners, stretching the defense, playing on the penalty kill.
He's the team MVP. No question in my book.
**********
So what have you guys enjoyed most this season? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
Prediction: San Jose meets Obama.
Go Sharks.

Being out of market,
I’ve enjoyed being able to watch games over the internet (until they got cut off). Last few seasons I could only watch games that were on VS. or Yahoo. As far as the team, I think the thing I’ve enjoyed most this season has been seeing the 2nd line come alive. Big Joe is amazing, but it’s been nice to see others on the score sheet night in and night out.
I agree with all of the above.
What has been most noticeable to me this season is the guys have learned not to go into severe panic mode should they be down by a goal or two. They regroup, retool their methods, and in most cases come back to get a winner. You can just see the confidence in their faces and their determination to win. This has been the most exciting season ever!
"The Cup stops here"
Definitely Patty's resurgence.
Oh and not being left wondering which Sharks were going to show up for a game like last season.
Still hard to believe this is the last home game. It’s been one hell of a ride. And I can think of one way the Sharks can show some fan appreciation tonight.
GO SHARKS!

Agree totally
Seeing Patty be the star has been the best part of the season. That said, watching Semmy go from the glove of doom to a pretty decent Dman has been enjoyable, and I don’t mind eating crow over that one. Lastly, a very favorite part of this season has been being a part of this group. It’s been an absolute joy to have a place to go where I can not only discuss hockey, but Sharks hockey.

Watching the talent being allowed to play
Those first 30 games was the argument against constraining offensive creativity in the name of eliminating mistakes. You have to have the right guys to do it, but McClellan recognized what he had, and let the boys loose.
I hope the Sharks get back to that style, because no one can keep up with them if they do.
Enjoyed the Sharks.
I learned all about hockey by watching them, reading about them, and such.
Have to say, my first season with the Sharks is amazing. And no doubt my first playoffs with them will be filled with agony every game ugh.
Also, having the experience at the Tank… that officially turned me into a lifetime Sharksfan. Absolutely positively.
Go Sharks!
I've enjoyed
watching me fail all my classes because I spend all my time watching the Sharks and reading about them at FTF watching this team become the best team in Sharks history. I’ve enjoyed seeing Devin Setoguchi score 30 goals. I’ve enjoyed Awesome Patty Marleau become Awesomer Patty Marleau. I’ve enjoyed Joe Pavelski scoring goals and being a defensive player. I’ve enjoyed Dan Boyle and Rob Blake being offensive defenseman. I’ve enjoyed Nabby be Super Nabby.

i've enjoyed how awesome this season was
seriously. does anyone have the stats on how many franchise and/or nhl marks the team set this year?
October and November
How refreshing it was to have us start the way we did, instead of creating a fricking 9 foot sink hole that it took us all year to crawl out of, as in prior years. It’s no wonder we have never made it past the 2nd round, there was no gas left in the tank after night upon night of “must wins” (that’s gotta be draining after a while). So given we’re going to be healthy heading into the playoffs, bring it on!!! It’s been wonderful!
do you think McClellan did that on purpose?
I mean, do you think he had the team start really strong and “rest” more toward the end of the year? Or is it just wishful thinking/ justification on our part
It might be a little of both- I think it’s safe to say that he was able to not rush JR, Clowe, Marleau, Grier et. al back so soon because of the hot start. If the Sharks were in a playoff race we would have seen them earlier.

funny how this works
When the Sharks were perennial overachievers, anything positive they did was just pure joy. Now that they’re such a strong and deep team these past few season especially; losing two in a row gives people heart attacks. Like the glory days of the Niners; I used to get nervous if they weren’t up by 2 touchdowns in the first half. Of course I want them, oh so badly to go all the way but if they don’t let’s try and keep our blood pressures in check. ; )

No matter what a Sharks win today clinches home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
Sharks would have 119 points. Boston can only reach 118. Detroit can only reach 117.
Although Detroit is our sworn enemy (almost as much as Dallas) I think they’re only cheering for the Red Wings strictly out of St. Louis advantage, not against the Sharks. If Detroit wins tonight in regulation, St. Louis clinches a playoff berth for the first time since the Sharks eliminated them in 2004. I dunno, at this point I don’t care who the Sharks play in the 1st round. No matter what I’ll act as I always do during the playoffs:
1) Grow a beard until elimination or completion of Mission 16W. Mind you it will not be grown out of laziness, pride, or tradition. Rather it will be grown out of stress, near heart attacks in every second of every game.
2) Yell at referees through the television screen, regardless of the threshold in their ability to hear from approximately 15 miles away.
3) Curse the goal posts. Curse the other team and find the oddest reasons and facts to logically feel pure hatred for the other team’s city and local patrons.
Yadda yadda the list goes on…
Let the end of the world begin with us!!
The cause for Game Time today
is getting to the playoffs. That’s all. Nothing more. Couldn’t care less what a Wings win means to the standings for any other team.
I have a feeling we’ll be turning our attention to San Jose in short order.

Love all the thoughts today guys. It’s truly amazing how good this team has been this season.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Favorite part of the season: Not Turtling.
This team seems so different from the teams of yore, where we would just turtle with a 4-2 or 2-1 lead, and in many cases, give the lead up. Furthermore, we would never really have the resilience to come back in a game, and just accept that our lead has been lost.
Rather, this team has fight. I can imagine so many games this season in which we were practically out of it, but come back from say 3-0 deficits and make it a tie game later on in the game. We fight for every last point, even if it means a shootout loss.
The blue line has been amazing. Game one, I was in awe of how many shots Blake took, and were on net. That’s when I knew something was different. Granted, we may have fallen a little astray from that first game, but we’re not that far away.
Evolution of players – Players who were stars or just contributors last year, have been superstars or stars in their own right this year. Setoguchi. Pavelski. Michalek. Clowe. Goc. Ehrhoff. Semenov. All have had significant improvement in their game. But none of which bigger is Marleau’s return to the awesome player we know and hail as our Captain.
We’ll be good for a while – our second half of the season proved that. The little Woo-sta Sharkies have some good talent and grit, and we’ll see it for the years to come.
I'll be at the game tonight
I’m not sure where the season has gone, but it’s been one helluva ride.

I cannot wait for the game tonight...
Last home game of the regular season, hellz yeah! I have a feeling the place will be rocking tonight. It’s been a hell of a season, and we should send them off into the second season tonight in rowdy fashion.
Favorite moments of the season? Well, there have been a lot. Opening night was sweet. The arena was electric, and we dominated the Ducks. Staubitz breaking Tootoo’s nose was also a highlight for me, and it really woke the crowd up in that game. Honestly, I have never been a part of a better sporting atmosphere than I find at Sharks games. This year was incredible, and I expect the postseason to be just as incredible.
See you tonight at the Tank!

detroit game and canucks game
Two of my favorite games were the detroit game that ended 6-5 in our favor. Back and forth action and a very physical game that was probably the most entertaining of the year.
The other was the Canucks game where we scored with around 20 seconds left to send it into overtime. After 2 or 3 failed breakaway attempts in ot, marleau slaps it home on a onetimer from big joe
Detroit game

Ehh
Its more of a franchise-long highlights vid (especially the last part, what with the Nolan called shot, the famous 5-on-3, and the Detroit first round upset) with an emphasis on this season. If it were just this season, I would have added more things like Murray’s hits, more of Nabby’s saves, and the Staubitz fight as well as the goals.
But hey, spring break. If you guys can point me to some youtube videos that have this season’s highlights, I could probably whip something up in WMM (which admittedly is an extremely crappy program, but its free and it works).
Totally off-topic
But I was wondering = do you pronounce your username “my-mic-life” or do you say “mimic life”? Is it meant to be a pun? Do I waste time wondering stupid things?
Fear The Fin = Anyone who doesn’t like fighting in the NHL can go watch poker on ESPN. [Jamie Baker]
Haha
Its “My McLife,” but I didn’t know whether or not you could include spaces or capitals, so I just did the lazy every-other-website way. And, although I’m sort of ashamed to say this, it actually comes from a quote from either season 2 or 3 of Grey’s Anatomy, where Meredith is complaining about Addison to Christina, saying, “She stole my McDreamy and my McDog. She stole my McLife!”
If I want to come off super-smart to people, I just say that its social commentary about the consumerism that has taken over the average person’s life. But, yeah. Grey’s Anatomy. A show that I’m not really a fan of anymore, lol.
I made the assumption it was an attack on consumerism
And then I saw it the other day and said, “Is it a pun on ‘mimic life’?” Eeeenteresting…. I says to meself.
Thanks for clearing that up!

Just the fact that the NHL did that makes me all happy inside, despite no guarantees of anything.
Do it for the Nookie!
Please please please clinch it at home. That would be so sweet for the fans!

Let the end of the world begin with us!!
Anyone watch the Giants game?
I just watched the end of it because it’s the same channel for the Sharks. Giant’s pitcher Joe Martinez was hit in the head with the ball after Mike Cameron hit it. It kind of has me worried because it hit him really hard, and anything that hits the head the wrong way could be bad. Last I heard he’s off to the hospital
Coincidentially
The Sharks clinched the Pacific the night they played Phoenix without needing to win. Tonight, same exact thing only with the Western Conference.
I just find that very amusing.

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Aye, me too. Luko has looked pretty poor lately, and Semenov has a big body that could pay off in the playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Big Russian, I won’t be holding my breath.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
They handed out stars after that game? And here I thought they just called it a night.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
They probably should have, but they gave out stars anyways. Why Pavelski didn’t get one, leading both teams with shots with 8 and scoring the lone goal-thing, I don’t know.
Usually I get antsy and volatile when the playoffs start. That might explain it.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
It could...
Or some “other” type of reason could explain that. You’re a man after all :P

I don't like you Detroit.

But I’ve a fever so I don’t think it’s the Sharks game that gets me all hot and bothered.
by AppleSweetRose on Apr 9, 2009 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Hell yeah. There’s no way we ride only six to the Cup. I threw it up in that lines article, but every team since the lockout who won a championship dressed at least seven.
I think Anaheim had 8, but don’t quote me on that.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
4th line guys barely get any time in the regular season,
they basically wouldn’t play in the playoffs so it makes sense to me
I don't like you Detroit.
This 4th line
gets way, way more minutes than any other 4th line. Last game Jody played 9 minutes. If I remember correctly he used to only play around 4-6 minutes
A lot of that could be keeping the top line guys down the stretch, but if McLellan continued to roll four all during the playoffs, I would be thrilled.
Keep em’ fresher than produce, that’s my motto.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Well
McLellan was resting a lot of his guys in the last game, plus it seemed like all of the energy and scoring chances came from the third and fourth lines.
But, yeah, he’s trending towards really rolling four lines.
Let's Go!

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Moen has had a good game
Did anyone see how hard he tried to get a breakaway in the last minute?

You guys think so? Let’s roll.
Four minutes, I gotta pee.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
I think you guys are panicking a bit .. they have been in the playoffs for a while … #1 in the western conference … getting the president’s trophy, while a nice to have, is not a must have … I’m sure they care plenty bout getting the Cup … I’ll worry bout worrying when they don’t score during the playoffs … until then … (shrugs)

Well, of course its the Sharks!!
I won’t disagree with that… I’m just upset that they really haven’t played well the last few games. Playoffs are different though. They’ll pick it up
The Sharks D aren't playing well...
Blake missed three chances in one sequence to clear the puck when finally Michalek scored…
playing well defensively,
causing us to turn it over a bit too much, blocking shots like hell, and standing us up in the neutral zone at times.
I don't like you Detroit.
WTF!?!?!
Can we find a lane to shoot through… or pass for that matter!?!?!?! And one other question, is anyone elses Comcast skipping majorly. Mine doing the Matrix skitter 4 times a minute. Annoying!!!

get a point to clinch

They still need 2 points to clinch, Boston can beat them on the wins tiebreaker.
I has good practice. Mike Grier keep shooting puck at me, and my confidence boosted very more. - "Evgeni Nabokov"
bruins lost in the shootout
so don’t we only need 1?
