WCF Game 1 Open Thread
Will Brian Campbell's inclusion on this year's Chicago Blackhawks lineup change your choice as to who ought to advance to the Cup Finals? Or are you a hardened anti-Detroit stalwart, bent on nothing but Lidstrom and Franzen's on-ice destruction? Do you salivate over the thought of Zetterberg crashing and burning like a zeppelin, or does "Citizen" Kane seem so overrated for your liking that you're actually pulling against the underdog?*
*Mr. K. is a film major - you will not win the argument that Citizen Kane is an overrated film... though he'll listen to suggestions that Patrick Kane is overrated. Note the word "listen."
Please consult our FTF poll, which is modified to include options SOLELY for regulars of our brethren, St. Louis Game Time; after all, this matchup must cause Brad Lee enough stomach indigestion to convince him to invest in Tums.
Game 1, at Detroit, begins at NOON PST on Sunday, May 17.

First post and vote!
I chose Chicago. A combination of Blackhawk-fan friends and a mantra of ABD (Anybody But Detroit) have put me firmly committed to the Indian.

I despise Detroit more than anything in this world. though I’ll side with Chicago for this series, either Eastern team MUST win the cup

Dude, Detroit is fine. They even have players we as Sharks fans we like, or at least used to. The Hawks have at least one player we don’t like: Poopy Campbell. I would feel too dirty to root for the Blackhawks…

wtf do you mean "we Sharks fans"
everyone has their own opinion on what players they like
i don’t care that Stuart plays on the Red Wings, i hate Detroit and their arrogant fans
plus i want to watch Havlat as long as possible because he will be wearing teal next season if we do not re-sign Clowe :]

Third post! And, yeah, a vote
Chicago as I stated before. Not too tough of a choice.
Oh, and K, explain to me why Citizen Kane is not the lousiest movie in the history of cinema. I just about fell asleep through it a during a screening freshman year, and my professor was unable to convince me that I shouldn’t have done so. I understand that it was groundbreaking on many levels, but the metaphors seemed pretty empty to me and the whole thing was a snooze fest.
I’m not a film critic by any means, but consistently being ranked at number one seems like a huge mistake.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I wouldn’t rank it the lousiest film… the Passion of Joan of Arc has that category wrapped up. Seriously, two hours of a close-up on a girl crying? No thanks.
And while I didn’t get the movie the first time, I found that if I watched it again with the metaphors and symbolism explained as it went on I was able to appreciate it as a work of art much more. Like, the symbolism of Kane and his first wife sitting further and further apart at the table as things get fancier, symbolizing them growing apart. Plus, some of the tricks used were pretty cool – the half-painting/half-action sequences, the focus on the foreground and background with the middle all blurry, the hidden edits, etc. I admit, its a pretty boring movie, but its still a work of art.
Oh, and its probably ranked number one because all the film critics want to apologize to Orson Welles since the movie was practically blacklisted at the time of its release by William Hearst, and so all the critics then derided it.
High school film class, FTW.

Haha, that’s just the hyperbole talking.
I definitely understood the movie (I actually had to write a paper on it freshman year, which could have a bit to do with my distaste for the film), but didn’t feel as if it did a good job of grabbing my attention and not letting go. The symbolism you mentioned was actually a paragraph in my essay- I said something along the lines of, “Although Welles admirably attempts to connect the vast expanse of Xanadu with the growing detachment with his second wife Susan, the symbolism is as uninspired as their relationship, and ultimately can be used to describe the entire film. Citizen Kane may be big, and it was most certainly bold, but if Xanadu taught us anything it is this- just because a piece of art is titanic does not mean it is filled with substance. A film is the sum of it’s entire parts, and while the technical achievements are laudable (especially considering the era when the film was released), the lack of compelling characters ultimately bring Welles’ piece to it’s knees.”
I got a B on the paper (my worst grade in all of college), so maybe I’m a little off base. Speaking of Hearst (and correct me if I’m wrong), but didn’t he hire an underage prostitute to trap Welles when the film was released? I know he forbade any of his various media outlets from acknowledging the movie, but I seem to remember a story along those lines as well.
Whatevs. I’m just going to fire up Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift and be on my way haha.

Haha, I don’t actually like Fast & The Furious (and Snatch is one of my favorite movies of all-time, kudos to you sir). I was just trying to mention a film that is pretty shallow in contrast to Citizen Kane.
That’s twice now that my jokes are falling on deaf ears. Might be time to hang it up, Plank.

Haha!
I tried writing a response this morning, but my internet went down and it didn’t post. Mymclife covered a lot of the bases, but basically I wanted to mention Gregg Toland’s cinematography, Orson Welles’ daring to mock a living and VERY powerful figure (a position that basically cost him every award he was nominated for except for screenplay), and the acting chops of everyone in the movie.
We’ll talk more at the intermission.

Ouch
Now that’s some harsh criticism.
But I can see your point – its not the most entertaining movie ever, and sometimes the symbolism falls a little flat. But I do think the technical achievements make up for those weak parts, and the simply iconic imagery (the opening sequence where the light on the tower stays in the same place, an homage to Snow White; the introduction of Kane with “Rosebud”; the speech when Kane was running for office; etc.) makes the film memorable.
I didn’t hear anything about a prostitute, but I did hear that “Rosebud” was Hearst’s nickname for a certain body part for either his mistress or his wife, I forget which.
Oh, and I totally watched Finding Nemo right after posting my comment. Art films are great, except when you want to be entertained.

That’s a good point, and I tend to agree with it. I guess I just don’t understand how it’s the perennial number one movie of all time- there’s a lot of other films that do these things effectively as well as offering up some compelling characters.
Oh and Rosebud definitely was a nickname. Since this is a family site I’ll just say it lies north of Heaven.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I can understand if you think another movie is #1
The importance of Citizen Kane leads many to the #1 placement, but I find that the film holds up extremely well on its own artistic and cinematic merits, regardless of the debt that other films owe to Kane.
Once again – let’s talk at the intermission.

Ok, Plank, intermission time
Let’s begin on a conciliatory note – what are your favorite movies of all time? (feel free to chime in, all)
Mine = The Third Man, Andrei Rublev, Le Samourai, Citizen Kane, Schindler’s List, Bob le Flambeur, Le Cercle Rouge, and How to Get Ahead in Advertising.
Fear The Fin = We're not as think as you drunk we are.
Debbie Does Dallas, Fast & The Furious, National Treasure, and some obscure French foreign film.
No, I’m just kidding. I’d have to go with Snatch, American History X, Schindler’s List, Star Wars 4-6, Hot Rod, and Miracle. For the all-time title holder it would have to be It’s A Wonderful Life because that makes me cry every time I see it.

The Third Man was pretty good – I enjoyed the homages to Welles that Reed included. The cuckoo clock speech still remains to be one of my favorites. Not a big fan of Le Samourai, though.
Anyways, my own favorites: Angels with Dirty Faces (I cried at the end), Bonnie and Clyde, A Hard Day’s Night (this movie made me love the Beatles), Dr. Strangelove, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars (the original trilogy only), Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Miracle, any Pixar movie, and Die Hard. I’m not a big chick flick girl, if you can tell.

But yeah, the ending is has become such a part of pop culture, people shouldn’t be mad if they find out about it before they see the movie. Its like “Snape kills Dumbledore!” or “Bruce Willis is a ghost!” or “Darth Vader is Luke’s father!” or anything from this list. why isnt one of the voting options
‘Im a regular SLGT regular and I’m reluctantly praying for a meteor strike’
You say 'Tomato', I say 'FUCK DETROIT', so lets call the season off
Exactly
The Detroit-Anaheim series was killer.
For Game 6, I voted for a triple OT Ducks win on a Hossa own-goal that made Getzlaf’s hair fall out after half of each team was thrown out because of a brawl. And then a meteor struck the Honda Center, the Sharks were chosen to take the place of the two teams, and then they went on to win the Stanley Cup. That, IMO, was the only way I could stomach it.
For this series, I am not against a Campbell own-goal. Especially an OT own-goal. Of course, it would have to be replicated by Hossa or the douchebag that boarded Joe Thornton that one game (and then the fans started cheering while Joe was lying injured on the freaking ice… And now I’m mad again, lol).
But either way, I want the Blackhawks to win with Campbell losing. Injury seems a bit much, maybe a series of own goals and stupid decisions that make Blackhawks fans burn effigies of him.

Fools and Sages
The douchebag = Cleary
Just 2 minutes into the game, Detroit’s Dan Cleary was penalized for boarding Joe Thornton after landing a hit on his back that led to his head slamming against the glass.
“It was just a hit,” Thornton said. “It was just a hit — from behind.”
And yes, the fans erupted into cheers while Thornton lay stunned on the ice

I thought it was him
Just wasn’t totally sure and didn’t want to direct my anger at the wrong player.
But yeah, I think it was at that point when I stopped merely disliking Detroit fans and started thinking they were the classless douchebags of the world, with just a few exceptions (and by few, I mean one or two). Because it wasn’t like they were cheering at the hit or cheering while the player is helped off of the ice (as etiquette dictates), but they were cheering as he was lying there and then being attended to by the trainers while still laying on the ice. That’s cheering for an injury. You don’t do that.

Robert Frost's "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening"
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

If this series continues to be this wide-open I’ll be a happy guy. It’s weird, because as much as I enjoy watching the Sharks play a tight defensive game (doing a good job of chipping pucks out, working the puck up the boards etc.), it’s such a pain to watch two teams I have no emotional investment in do it.
Anyways, keep up the scoring chances Hawks and Wings. And Ozzie, do us all a favor and let a couple in.
