Purdy Rosterbates!

http://www.montereyherald.com/ci_12476051?source=rss

Although, he does have some insider info.

Click the link for lazy journalism.  If anyone else wants to clutch at straws, it might be time for us to start our official Rostercourse session before Purdy comes in and spills Natty Ice on our party.

If Purdy were a beer he would be... I'm guessing something over rated. Budweiser? Coors light? Miller light?

Actually with all the bad Spanish (Los tibur.... Sorry cant finish that sentence) he'd probably be a Tecate or one of those buckets of Margarita mix.

“It’s probably just as well that our beloved Los Tiburones lost in the first round against Anaheim. With the guts and skill the Red Wings have demonstrated the last few weeks, there’s no way the Sharks were going to beat Detroit in a seven-game series, anyway.”

Seriously?
Stand by your guys.

Now I need to try to finish reading the rest of it.

Thornton and Pavelski are staying put

So he says that DW let slip – but that’s not exactly earth-shattering considering they were both at the State of the Sharks, along with Boyle and (after a last-minute change) Marleau. Cheechoo was there last year – it’s not surprising that he was left off the podium this time around (see ya, Jonathan).

The possibility of a first round pick is intriguing, though – Purdy has actually reported something that is noteworthy! Shall I frontpage this, Morti? I don’t want to steal thunder from Dave, or you, though.

Fear The Fin = We're not as think as you drunk we are.

Hmmmm...

Gotta say that I like the Sharks getting some offseason media love. Even though I don’t like Purdy, at least he gives them some time.

As far as the moves are concerned, I’m not thinking that Cheechoo will bring a 1st rounder, so that leaves either Nabokov or Marleau.

Another thing that’s interesting to me: Doug’s request for accountability. If Nabokov’s past rants are any indication, he’s not one to own up to something he could have done better. That attitude might come back to hurt him.

I don’t expect any major moves, because to me, only a move of Marleau or Nabokov would be major at this point. Although I would love to see Marleau stay, I’m wary of hanging onto Nabby.

But now I’m just rosterbating.

Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!

by Matthew_Taylor on May 29, 2009 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

But while Nabokov admittedly did not have a terrific series against Anaheim, he wasn’t the primary reason that the Sharks lost.

Plus, have you checked the two goalies in the finals? Detroit’s Chris Osgood and Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fluery are okay. But before the playoffs, neither was considered among the league’s best. The players in front of them have made them look great.

Finally somebody that gets it, you can’t just blame losses on your goalie thats not how hockey works. Great goaltenders look terrible on bad teams and bad goalies look good on great teams. I mean it’s pretty obvious if you’ve payed any attention to this years playoffs. Luongo and Osgood are two obvious examples of this very situation. Stop blaming our shortcomings on Nabby he is a great goaltender that didn’t play great, but he is not the reason we lost the series. How do you expect to win a playoff series when you can’t even execute a breakout properly?

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on May 29, 2009 10:54 AM PDT reply actions

I’m not saying that it’s all Nabby’s fault. Not even close. But we pay him to be elite and he was below average at best in the playoffs.

Just ask Dan Boyle.. “Yeah, we didn’t play great, but our goaltending has to be better.” I agree with Dan, the guy who plays the game every night.

Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!

by Matthew_Taylor on May 29, 2009 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

if dan thinks his team played good enough to win besides goaltending

he is either extremely stupid or just ignorant or completely playing the blame game, the team as a whole played twice as bad as nabby

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on May 29, 2009 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Did you even read the quote?

And I don’t think the whole team played twice as bad as Nabby. Boyle himself had a good series, for one. Nabby was not good. PERIOD.

Neither were the Sharks.

But you can’t tell people they can’t blame Nabokov even a little bit. He played poorly. Did the rest of the team? Fuck yes. But that’s no reason not to blame Nabokov.

He needs to play better for the Sharks to have a chance to win. So do the skaters. Blame whoever you want, but just because everyone is at fault, it doesn’t mean no one is… if you catch my drift.

Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!

by Matthew_Taylor on May 29, 2009 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions

gotcha. No hard feelings.

I love Nabby, it’s just an interesting juxtaposition if you look at the difference between this year and last. Last year, he was Vezina worthy and kept us in games we should have lost. This year, he was middle of the pack and took us out of games at times. Not saying it’s all him, but his play definitely didn’t help. If he played how he did last year… we probably would have been second round bound.

Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!

by Matthew_Taylor on May 29, 2009 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions

uh no,

10/6 = not getting out of the first round. It basically equates to alternating between scoring 2 goals one game and 1 the next, if you think you are going to beat anyone doing that you are crazy man. I don’t care if you call up roy, brodeur, or hell even dryden you are not going to win doing that.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on May 29, 2009 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I KNOW THE TEAM PLAYED BAD.

All I’m saying is, with the Nabby last year, we probably could have won a 1-0 or 2-1 game. If he played out of his mind like Hiller did, who knows.

Again. Not blaming Nabby. Just saying… Nabby could have been better. So could Thornton, Marleau, et. all.

Pick a player (not named Boyle), and we’d have the same discussion.

Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!

by Matthew_Taylor on May 29, 2009 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

we

needed goals to beat the ducks, the wings couldn’t even stop that first line of the ducks those guys are great. The fact of the matter is the wings did a better job getting traffic in front of hiller and thus scored more goals, they also rattled him a little bit by going hard to the net they even ran him over a few teams.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on May 29, 2009 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Definitely should have scored more and created traffic.

As McLellan said.. “There’s a difference between being in front of the net and thinking you’re in front of the net. It’s a six inch difference. We needed those six inches.”

Still though, that doesn’t absolve Nabby of blame… s’all I’m saying.

Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!

by Matthew_Taylor on May 29, 2009 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

more than that,

it’s a style of play that clearly works (see detroit). However as fans we have to realize that we won’t just be able to play that way overnight. The thing that is disappointing is that it seemed we played that style more so in the regular season. All in all I thought Anaheim had a decent chance just didn’t have the balls to say it, I mean it is tough to draw them they are built for the playoffs and had a good goalie run going and should’ve taken out detroit.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on May 29, 2009 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

boyle played tremendous

don’t quite remember how he played defensively, would have to rewatch the games, but I know he remember him being one of the few players saying to yourself damn that guy is playing great he actually seems like he wants to win. I don’t know the specific stats but he had like 2 goals and was one of the best out there on the ice, if their is anyone to question definitely not boyler he played great.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on May 29, 2009 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Stop blaming our shortcomings on Nabby he is a great goaltender that didn’t play great, but he is not the reason we lost the series.

Who did?

The only people I know who hate Nabby are the ones who want to trade him for Brodeur or Luongo or Chris Mason or Jonas Hiller. And those people I know are idiots…

by idunno723 on May 29, 2009 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Well of course the media says that. The media is also full of idiots too. And who on the team blamed the series on Nabby?

AFAIK

only Boyle called him out, and even he admits to being hot when he said it. I don’t think that constitutes “a bunch of people on the team.”

I like Nabby, I think he’s good, but he, along with most of the Sharks, wasn’t good enough in the playoffs. That’s a fact. Doesn’t mean I blame him. All it means is that I felt he (and others) could have stepped up more than they did.

I agree

Goalies are different than the other players on the team (yes I’m biased since I was a goalie.) Much more pressure and responsibility. They have the ability to save the game or to get the team psyched up. I honestly did not feel that Nabby did either of those in the playoffs this season…

by AfroPuff on May 29, 2009 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

in front of nabby show him? nothing, no support defensively or offensively

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on May 29, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I am agreeing with you

Neither the front end nor the back end played well in the playoffs. I’m just sayin’ that when a team is playing lethargially/without passion (from my viewpoint), a great save from the goalie can provide that spark. But we didn’t really get many sparks from Nabby. Especially when you recall last year’s playoffs whereNabby was awesome and helped re-energize the team at times.

by AfroPuff on May 29, 2009 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s what the Sharks need: Players who will collectively make each other look great — and who don’t seem to grow smaller in the postseason. The hunch here is that of the team’s stars, Marleau is still the most likely to be moved. And what about Milan Michalek, who made $3 million last season and has been a consistent playoff disappointment? (By comparison, Pavelski made $1.55 million).

That is soooo wrong… soooooo wrong.

Was not to bag on Purdy (Although that is a nice side effect)

It wasn’t to belittle his article (Although it did deserve it to a degree)

I brought it up because he is Rosterbating! He has no dice! He was on a TV show with Dougy, and then drew a bunch of conclusions regarding the roster situation!

We all know solid, done deal trades fall through all the time (See: NIEDKLERYARYER

Yeah, Dougy wants a first round pick! Who wouldn’t? Is this ground breaking news? Did anyone here believe that as long as we were dumping cap space/Getting rid of players with no heart, Etc that we weren’t interested in killing two birds with one stone?
No, this has been brought up a number of times! Our problem is to get a legit first round pick, the stakes are high! (Marleau, Nabby or Cheech and some guys from the minors. See! There I go Rosterbating again!)

My point is, Purdy at this point knows as much as we do! He is as pimple faced as us with his guess work and straw grabbing. He has no more to go on than we do.

Eh, It's hard to get excited about just any first round pick

Looking back these are top 10 picks that have worn teal.

1st overall- Nolan, Thornton, Murphy
2nd-Marleau, Falloon, Zyuzin
3rd- S. Thornton, Stuart, Rathje
4th-Ricci, Sutter, Iafrate
5th- Guerin
6th-Maclean, Kozlov, Michalek
7th- Dahlen, Burr, Zmolek
8th-Roenick, Sundstrom, Setoguchi, Waite
9th- Bodger, Harvey, McLaren, Marshall
10th- Selanne, More

There are some studs, some duds.

I think the salary cap space from trading player x for pick(s) to sign or re-sign someone will be more beneficial than whatever kid we draft.
