Oh man,
just wait until TCY sees this. You’ve definitely come to the right place. Couture is one of, if not the, Sharks’ top prospects. My guess is we’ll see him start the season in Worcester as he doesn’t have much AHL experience and a little seasoning there probably wouldn’t hurt. Remember his name though, he’s got top line talent. I’ll let TCY get into more detail, he’s hot for prospects and has a serious man-crush on this one.
And welcome aboard.

Just kidding...
Couture is the only legitimate NHL prospect we have (Sexsmith and Petrecki are close, so is McGinn, but no one is met with the hype of Couture).
A year before Couture was drafted, he was predicted by many to go number one. However, after a year riddled with injuries and sub par performance, he slipped to the Sharks at number nine. Thank god.
Couture is billed as a solid two way player with a big heart and leadership qualities extrordinare. He’s drawn favorable comparisons to Yzerman, and although no one knows if he will approach that status… he’s got that going for him, which is nice.
What to expect: Couture almost made the team this year, but was sent back to Ottawa (due to age reasons, he was only 19 at the time) to further grow both physically and mentally. He’s shown the ability to dominate lower lever talent (87 points in 62 OHL games), but he’s still got some work to do. He played well while in the playoffs with Worcester, but that’s a small sample size.
He’s got a projectable frame, (he’s 6’1", 196) so his body type is well suited for the NHL. He’s a gifted skater, although I wouldn’t necessarily call him blazing fast, he’s got that extra gear.
He’ll be in the NHL at somepoint next year, even if he doesn’t make the squad straight out of camp. Imagine Joe Pavelski, with more potential.
I’m at work so that’s the short awnser… any individual questions I can take 1 at a time.

Petrecki is tight
and what about Joslin?
he’s legit
by Brian5517209 on May 29, 2009 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Joslin matured alot this year, but his game doesn’t translate well to the NHL at this point. He’s got the tools on offense, but not on D yet. He was beat on routes to the puck consistently and backchecked poorly in the playoffs.
I do like Joslin, but he’s not ready yet, IMO.

Very good skater. Throws the body well on the movie too.
He’s not blazing fast, but he has that deceptive quality where we can move around defenders almost at will. Although, those were AHL guys.

just asking cause i read somewhere
he’s not a good skater, i’ve never actually seen him play live besides clips, i’ll try and dig up a link.
I don't like you Detroit.
here ya go
The main drawback to Couture’s game is his skating, according to most observers.
"He doesn’t have a quick first step, or the explosiveness. His skating will drop him in the draft," said Woodlief.
The NHL’s Central Scouting Bureau ranked Couture 19th overall, although director E.J. McGuire actually disagrees with the consensus opinion on the Ottawa center’s skating ability.
"It is a fair question to ask, but I think his skating is fine and will also improve over time," said McGuire.
Head coach Brian Kilrea also believes his player’s foot speed is good, "but he may need to get a bit quicker."
Couture understands there are concerns, and has made plans for enhancement in that area. This summer, he’ll work with former GMJHL assistant coach and power skating guru Dwayne Blais.
"We’re going to work on my overall stride, starts, crossovers and other things," said Couture.
The only concern is his skating ability.
I don't like you Detroit.
He has definitely improved in the two years since that was written. In the AHL, he led the rush on many occasions, and was usually first to the puck in the offensive zone. He’s not blowing people away, but he has impoved even since he played with San Jose in the preseason. He’s made significant erhem strides.

Plus, just look at these quotes:
…there are still questions about whether he has the speed and skating ability to succeed at the NHL level.
…needing to add leg strength and improve his skating…
Yeah, Pavelski is a much better skater now, isn’t he? And just think, those reviews were written just a few months before he made it into the NHL after getting 26 points in 16 games in the AHL.
So, while Couture may not be blowing anyone away with his skating ability, its not like he can’t improve upon that. Even with just this off-season, he could improve immensely.

heh
I do it all the time!
But yea, 5pm (8 eastern) on a Sat. is a weird time to start the SCF. Better than the 10 day break though.

I watched, it’s just, well, a lot of folks go out on Fri and Sat. I guess that is still early enough to watch and then hit the bars/clubs/whatever. But yeah…beggars can’t be choosers I suppose. But we can be whiners. ;)

the people who run the nhl are idiots
but they just wanted to get two games on nbc on the weekend and this is the only way they could do it, maybe if you would actually have ratings you wouldn’t have to put it on versus where half the nation doesn’t even get the channel
I don't like you Detroit.
isn't that a self fullfilling prophecy?
Let’s go to a small but growing network. Many viewers don’t have said network, so ratings are small. Oh look, no ratings, so we won’t air it on a larger network more people get, because it won’t get the numbers. Even though the Winter Classic proved that it WILL, this small subset of data says otherwise.
In that scenario, you can’t win.

Couture is definitely a Pavelski-like player.
He will probably end up being better than Pavelski due to his size and he will probably be more of a playmaker than a goalscorer. You could say that if Seto were Ovechkin, McGinn would be Malkin and Couture would be Crosby, (obviously with seriously lower skill levels, I’m speaking more about playing style.)
I've been reading a while actually signed up for the 1st round draft pick post
Hi, I’ve been reading FTF for a while now, but signed up because I wanted to comment on the 1st round draft pick post, but my post there seemed to disappear into the ether. Thanks for the welcome.

from people whove seen him play
do you think couture is going to have a spot in the lineup next year? if so.. where? 3rd line center?
Depends on signings...
But I’m guessing either third or fourth line guy, he could fill in on a wing if need be.
Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!
by Matthew_Taylor on Jun 1, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions
If we're squeezed for cap room, 3rd line center else stays in the AHL
I really don’t think it would be wise to bring Couture up next year. If we can ice a roster with enough scoring without him, (and we should be able to with the return of Mitchell and the permanent presence of McGinn), then I really think that he should get a full year in the AHL before we bring him up to the NHL. There’s a pretty big jump from junior hockey to professional play, and some time with the baby Sharks should help iron out his remaining kinks. I also think that his playing style is best suited toward being a center, moving him to a wing may not work out and would possibly put some of his talents to waste.
Agreed..
I’ve said that I don’t think Couture should start with the big club, but I do see him being one of the first call ups if and when injuries happen. He definitely needs more time to develop, so keeping him in Worcester for a while wouldn’t be a bad thing. However, if the Sharks were a team like Tampa or Phoenix, you probably would have seen him at the NHL level already.
However, Couture has shown that he is a pretty talented player, so I don’t think that putting him on the wing would absolutely kill his game. We wouldn’t be utilizing all his talents, to be sure, but I think he could still get it done lining up to a guy like Goc. Who knows, and we’ll have a better idea once training camp rolls around.

my prediction is he makes the team,
and centers the third line, unless the staff deems mitchell more appropriate (which they won’t).
