WTC Update: Clowe and Grier
Clowe and Grier both in the process of negotiating contracts; Clowe's "no. 1 goal" is to stay in San Jose, despite knowing that he can get more money somewhere else; while Grier hopes to finish his career here, and feels that he still has a few years left in him.
Also: San Jose still in the running for Gustavsson (no team has been ruled out), and we should expect an answer by June 29 or 30. And Claude Lemieux is becoming a US citizen Friday, so congrats to him.

Hmmm...
Well, hopefully Clowe’s desire to remain in San Jose will get us a hometown discount of sorts on a longer term deal. It would be nice if we could get him in cheaper than TCY’s proposal from earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the San Jose Sharks are in discussions with a couple of teams, with Sharks forward Ryane Clowe the centre of trade talks.

Yeah, saw that. I also saw that a few pundits are saying that Marleau and Nabokov are “definitely on the move,” which makes no sense for the Sharks (trading away your franchise, Vezina-nominated goalie and captain in the same summer after winning the President’s Trophy? WTF?). And then there are those pundits saying that the Sharks are interested in both Heatley and Bouwmeester, despite our defense being all but set and our complete lack of cap space for either one.
Basically? I’m not listening to anyone outside of David Pollak and anything that is officially coming from the Sharks. Remember, last summer there were all those “Marleau to Montreal” rumors, with everyone saying it was a done deal, and we all know how that turned out.

OK
I’ll step away from the ledge, but I’m staying on the roof…

This is my philosophy as well. It’s a sound one.

I’m giving an E5 to that philosophy. No more Bleacher Report rumors haha.

those are still fun, even if you know they’re likely bunk from the get go.

In my defense…
The Pronger rumor was announced on KNBR, so I found the first link I could.
The Blake rumor? Well, I heard that here, but I posted it, so I take full responsibility.
If only DP would post more bogus rumors… haha.

Just got off the phone with Paul Corbeil, Clowe’s agent. Corbeil thought Doug Wilson might be talking with other GMs about Clowe in order to establish his price in the marketplace.
That’s along the lines of what JB suggested at #56. I had thought the same thing and frankly that seems to make more sense than actually shipping out Clowe when there’s only a week left on his contract and therefore not getting much in return.
I’m about to post something on my conversation with Corbeil, but I wanted to drop this into the mix first.

I haven’t checked the comments at WTC so this may have already been mentioned, but if we sign Clowe, he is unable to be traded a year afterwards because he is an RFA.
Trading him with a week left on his contract is really a last ditch solution. The only way that happens is if Wilson has no chance/intention of signing him at all this offseason, and the return in a trade would be more than the draft pick compensation.
DP has to be right when he says Wilson is likely establishing a market value.
