Not Hockey Related: FIFA Confed. Cup

I haven't been on Fear the Fin for a while because I upgraded my browser, but it didn't transfer my bookmarks.  And because I didn't write down my password to SBN..............yeah.  3 or 4 weeks later, I finally have my account back.  The sad part is, I probably won't learn from this.

Star-divide

Anyway, on to more serious matters.  I have two sports I love, hockey obviously, and futbol.  Since certain....................events in May caused me to go in to deep depression, I have looked to futbol raise my spirits.  Now, let's see the Earthquakes should be strong-........................ this year.............. I guess the Universe is still mad at me for when we were roomates.  Luckily Team USA has become my psychiatrist.  The Confederations Cup started badly though as we lost to Brazil and Italy handily.  It looked like we were out of the tournament.  I read that it would take 6 US goals and a win over Egypt to advance...................... Calling Suicide hotline.  However, the US beat Egypt 3-0, Italy lost to Brazil 3-0, and I was jumping for joy, and wondering about the factuality of what I'd read before.

However, our next opponent was Spain, ranked #1 in the world and favorites to win next years world cup.  They had a 15 game winning streak and a 35 game unbeaten streak............. oh goody.  The winning streak is a world record, the unbeaten streak was tied for first with a Brazilian run from 93 to 95.  I didn't think we would win, but I was going to root for them anyway, and hey its sports, anything can happen.  I kept thinking about the US upset over England in the 1950 World Cup, dubbed the "Miracle on Grass" or our 1-0 stunner over Brazil in the 98 Gold Cup, or our miracle run in the 2002 World Cup.

The US rewarded my faith better than I thought they could.  When Dempsey scored to put us up 2 nil, I was screaming, every emotion I could think of was boiling up.  That's when I knew we had done it.  20 minutes later, the team that was unbeatable, had never been scored on since April, had lost to the United Kick-Ass States of America.  Final Score was 2-0.  The US is now on its way to its first final in a major internation tournament ever.  I still can't stop smiling and celebrating.

Right now I'm watching the Brazil vs South Africa game to see who we'll face.  Sure this isn't the World Cup, but it doesn't matter.

  GO USA!!!

For those of you who don’t follow international futbol. Brazil and Italy are two of the top five teams in the world.
Egypt is a pretty good team, but not anywhere near the best.
The US is currently ranked 14 in the world.

Its riduculous

It shouldn’t have been a red card either. We also had two red cards called against in our Italy match at the 2006 World Cup, neither should have been a red.

Nice

I saw the news on Twitter, and was able to catch the last fifteen minutes of the US-Spain match when ESPN replayed it as an “instant classic.” Pretty sweet, even if I had almost no clue what was going on.

Random but nuts- Michael Jackson is possibly dead. Lots of news outlets are reporting he is, others saying he isn’t. Cardiac arrest apparently.

I didn't know sitting back the entire time meant scoring 2 goals

They lost because they drastically underestimated the United States. The only people you should be pissed at are the Spanish player. If the US can beat Spain, they can beat anyone – Brazil was lucky to get past South Africa and the United States is in an entirely different class.

Great moments… are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here, tonight, boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game. If we played ’em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight.

Heh, in my sports management class we covered the US Olympic Hockey Team for a week. The Disney movie Miracle actually did a pretty good job of representing everything Herb was about (which is surprising for a Hollywood film).

Anyways, Herb is awesome. I’m still banking on the fact they froze his body and are planning on bringing him back at some point.

Gotta disagree there

They did pretty well with the Rookie; I read the book by the guy (and what the movie was based off of), and while Disney focused on just a small part of the book, they stayed pretty true to his account.

And as for all their fairy tale movies, well, fairy tales have different versions of them, and always have. Disney just makes them easier to tell on-screen, and adds happier endings (like, really, what little kid would want to see the traditional version of the Little Mermaid?).

Just to warn you, I am a bit of a Disney loyalist (except their former sports teams; I hate them, lol) ;)

USA has no real fans

Do you guys suddenly just show up after a major upset? I’ve been to nearly every football store in the Bay Area, watched games with my brother at bars, but I have never seen a single person wearing an American jersey or looking at Team USA jersey. But it’s okay, don’t worry, your fickle loyalty to will be treated likewise. As the U.S. will be out in the 1st round during the World Cup, the only reason they ever qualify is because barely anyone else can play in North America. Plus how can you guys having a traitor on your team not to mention to your own hometown!! What do I mean? Landon Donovan left the San Jose Earthquakes in 2003 after winning Player of the Year for Germany—which was no problem, no insult—but almost immediately returned to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy for a ton more money. That’s just bullshit.

As for the game, don’t lie, how many times did you see American players taking the dive after a small tap on the leg? Landon Donovan trying to stop a Spanish corner took a dive in front of David Villa, who immediately helped him up and probably nonchalantly told him to “Stop being a pussy.” I think the only talented player on the American team is Howard, that’s about it, and it’s only because the American defense (especially Bocanegra on the wing) lets everything through that Howard gets so much damn practice. Kiss my nicely tanned Spanish ass :) your bandwagon’s journey will end soon enough

calm down man

sometimes bandwagoning isn’t that bad, it can be a good way to get into a sport you’re unfamiliar with when you are suddenly given a good emotional interest. How can you fault people supporting their national team in an effort to learn more about soccer? sorry Spain lost dude, you don’t have to go whining about it, it’s just the confederations cup. Moments like this that excite people about soccer are going to lead to more educated fans in the future, so it may be annoying but it’s really nothing to get upset over

sorta not joking anymore:

You really, really do not need to make this an attack on USA. Nor do you need to say “you guys” and things like that.

Earlier this year in the WBC the Netherlands beat the Dominican Republic one of the biggest upsets in baseball. One from the DR can just as easily make a complaint about the Netherlands as you have about the USA but it would be a stupid arguement because baseball probably isn’t the biggest thing in the Netherlands. Sorta like how soccer (I’m not saying football) isn’t popular in the US. It’s a stupid argument. It’s like saying the US has no “real” Cricket fans.

Also USA beat Spain. I don’t even like soccer but now I’m even more proud that US won. BTW the score was 2-0. Going 90 + minutes without scoring a goal means something even if the US isn’t “talented” at all.

gotta support the national team

but don’t be fooled, they played horribly for most of this tournament and made up for it with 2 good games. They lucked out to get to the semifinals and responded with a great, but unfortunately rare, performance. But sports are always most fun if you have some vested rooting interest, so for international USA is always fun or any other nation that you have some kind of pride for/heritage ties to. But international games don’t actually happen that often, so you gotta search for a club team to like. There’s lots of Champions League (best clubs in europe) games on ESPN and it’s pretty easy to get channels that show games from England or Spain. So if you have no specific ties to one club, I guess you should just watch until you see a team who floats your boat! sorry if you knew a lot of that already

by a10dency2ask on Jun 25, 2009 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

and i actually don’t see many futbol games on espn, usually the only one i see is the champions league final. and it feels like one of those teams is always english. i only know 6 teams, manchester united, liverpool, arsenal, chelsea, barcelona and real madrid.

yes the champions league has been unfortunately english dominated recently

but it’s still true that they show at least 2 matches a week on the ESPN networks during the Champs league times. English and Spanish league, CTGray, are thought to be the highest quality in the world. There’s some soccer specific channels where you can watch a lot of those games, otherwise you gotta wait for Champs league or international games on ESPN channels

well...

the word “soccer” comes from the full original name of the sport, “association football.” It’s an abbreviation of “association” that was originally used in the UK to distinguish it from rugby football.

but I usually call it soccer unless I am around mates who are from elsewhere and call it football, just to avoid confusion. Plus “footie” is a such an adorable term for a game, I have to love it.

Could someone please explain to me how the clock works? I’d look it up but I’m really kind fuzzy atm.

by CTGray on Jun 28, 2009 12:46 PM PDT reply actions

how the clock works?

two 45 minute halves (halfs?), the clock counts up from zero. At the end of each half there is “stoppage time” in which the referee adds time to make up for when there were injuries and other stoppages (essentially makes up for the lack of commercial breaks). That is probably the most confusing part of the clock, but just remember there is usually 2-4 minutes added at the end of each half.

by a10dency2ask on Jun 28, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

in other words, the clock never stops, except for halftime

by a10dency2ask on Jun 28, 2009 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks!

I have a seen a few matches before and had NO idea what stoppage time was.

it is

and since the clock stops in virtually every other sport that goes off one, the running clock is also somewhat wacky when you aren’t used to it.

definitely, it's weird

newp

I was just assuming it was similar to hockey

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com. Endorsed by Mr. K on "CINCODEMYOOR!!!!!"

by CTGray on Jun 28, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

yea pretty much same thing

but instead of a drawn line on the ground, it’s based on the imaginary line created by the last defender. So if the offensive player is beyond the last defender at the time of the pass, he’s offside. I guess the difference is time of pass rather than when the puck/ball crosses the line

by a10dency2ask on Jun 28, 2009 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

ahh, ok

Thanks :)

It’s like watching hockey for the first time. You aren’t really sure what’s going on, but you have a very vague idea based off experience with other sports.

Me too.

I’m not too familiar with soccer but is it normal after beating a team people gloat about it to the team that just lost instead of congratulating them?
