2009 NHL Entry Draft Open Thread (Rounds Two - Seven)

Doug Wilson, perhaps a little distracted.

So, I don't really think any fan knows what Doug Wilson was thinking about yesterday in Montreal:

Did he turn down any big trades?

Did he have a player in the first round that he tried to acquire?

Does he have anything planned (other than drafting the status quo) for the second day of the draft?

UPDATE: Here's what Wilson was doing, per David Pollak at WTC...

11:00 p.m. — Back now after finishing print edition story and taking care of a couple things around the house. I figure they took precedent over a wrap-up on a night when, um, nothing really happened.

I did talk with Doug Wilson and he said he liked the idea of getting one of the top 11 picks and made some inquiries, but none of those teams ended up trading with anybody. He added that the Sharks could have gotten a first-round pick for the two second round picks it is holding, “but it wouldn’t have gotten us into the range we wanted to be.”

And the Sharks GM did say he talked with Anaheim’s Bob Murray when the Pronger trade talks were under way, “but it was quite evident he was not going to move him within the division.”

Also, he is interested in adding picks Saturday if the opportunity presents itself.

Well, that will all play out today, as it's the last opportunity Wilson will have to meet with all other GM's at the same time and make a deal to adjust the way next year's team will look. Yeah, teams aren't always built or changed at the draft. As a whole though, most player moves are made either during the trade deadline or during the draft festivities. Wilson has been known to make big moves post draft (Boyle), but most fans want something now. I do.

I expected a move would be made yesterday, but I was wrong. Still, I'd be shocked if a move wasn't made today. I didn't see Wilson at the Sharks table once, so I'd assume he was out walking around, talking it up with other GM's. That, or he was in a tanning bed.

Expect the same names to be in play: Cheechoo, Clowe, Marleau, Nabokov, Michalek and Ehrhoff. Much of it is speculation, but remember: 99% of rumors aren't true, but 100% of rumors are fun to talk about.

The second round begins at 7:00 AM, Pacific. Have at it.

by Matthew_Taylor on Jun 27, 2009 7:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Me too, especially since I believe the Sharks are pretty stacked on defense. Then again, our NHL defense core is leaning on the older side between Blake, Boyle, and Lukowich, so that might be why.

But two defensive defensemen? I don’t know…

Yeah, but with Joslin, Petrecki, Moore, and Demers already in the system, and McGinn, Couture, and Kaspar as the top offensive prospects (will all probably be in the NHL, Kaspar might play abroad)… really seems odd actually.

Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!

by Matthew_Taylor on Jun 27, 2009 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, and the Sharks haven’t drafted any offensive defensemen in a long time, either – just drafting stay-at-home defensemen (unless you included Morris, but I don’t think he counts since he’ll likely never play in the NHL).

And geez, when Kaspar is considered a top forward prospect – no matter if he was taken in the first round or not – that shows the lack of depth in the farm.

Some player analysis from a guy on HF Boards (who I believe works for a scouting service). Good stuff on Wrenn, um, less than good for Doherty.

William Wrenn (2009), D, USNTDP
Serving as the American’s team captain, Wrenn is a mobile, two-way defenseman with high character .. nothing special, but Wrenn is a smooth skater and is efficient on the offensive side of the puck .. does a nice job jumping into the open seams when they are available and he also showcased his seeking shot by scoring three times .. a Denver recruit .. Wrenn also has understated toughness and is very steady defensively.

Taylor Doherty (2009), D, Kingston Frontenacs
An absolute monster on skates at 6-foot-8, 203 pounds, Doherty skates and handles the puck fairly well considering his size, but he’s dumb as a rock and his hockey sense is awful .. with the puck, Doherty will have three open options and will take the fourth .. his poor hockey sense forces him into playing the game at a sloth-like pace .. has the troubling habit of reverting back to behind his net when he has the puck in his own zone, in hopes of his defensive partner swinging by to move the puck for him .. has a great reach and was the largest player at the tournament .. some team will draft Doherty for his physical tools, but it will be a thorny developmental process because of his slow mental processor.

Just great.

Another developmental guy who may never see the light of the day in the NHL. Kind of off topic, but have the Sharks given up on Mike Morris, the first round pick from 02, or are we still trying to develop him?

Well, the fact that they first compared Schenn’s ability to shoot well in the slot to Cheechoo’s, a guy who got 12 goals this year (I’m guessing they’re referring to the 05-06 version of Cheech). And then comparing him to Thornton, who is not exactly a goal scorer.

Just a weird combination of players that both happen to be on the Sharks.

My recap (so far)

TCY talking to himself for an hour
Bouwmeester traded to Calgary for Jordan Leopold and a 3rd
Sharks get William Wrenn with #43 (defensive defenseman)
Then draft Taylor Doherty with #57 (large defensive defenseman; Semenov-like)
Mighty Putty!
Sharks draft Philip Varone with #146 (center, good in the playoffs, small)
We discover that the Sharks have the 189th pick. No idea why.
Sharks draft Marek Viedensky with #189 (center, tall but spindly), still have no idea where it came from
Pollak reveals 2010 6th round pick traded for #189. DW did a trade, so all is well.
