What is this “healthy scratch” that you are speaking of? I do not recall the Sharks having one this year. Is it anything like the injured reserve?
Anyways, if you look at it like that – $1.16M per player – yeah, it looks kind of scary. But, really, the players that we need to sign are all on the lower end of the salary spectrum (save for Blake and Clowe – but its really either Clowe or Cheech at this point), so its rather do-able. Bring up some Worcester guys, sign young role-players that haven’t quite broken out yet and have been on bad/mediocre teams, and we should be good. I don’t expect anyone on the fourth line to make over $800K, and the third line’s highest salary should be around $1.3M (and that’s just one player – I expect the others to hover around $1M). Add to that a backup that would make around $760K (aka, Greiss), and we should have some cap space left. Not much, but some.
If worse comes to worse, I could see DW trading away Michalek or one of our defensemen (likely Murray, because we have the Murray-like Moore coming up soon, and Petrecki later on) to create cap space.

Not Murray! He can’t trade Murray! I’m grabbing my phone right now! I don’t know what I’ll do with it, but he can’t trade Crankshaft!! (notice to double exclamation points on that last one!)
Originally a NorthStars fan, but Modano is all that remains.

I’m sorry. Its just out of all of our defensemen, he’s the most replaceable through the guys we already have in the system (Moore, Petrecki, and now Wrenn and Doherty). Believe me, I don’t want to lose Murray and his amazing hitting skills either.

Heh, made me laugh.
If we’re looking at Clowe and Blake alone, that’s roughly six million dollars (minimum?), which allows us four million of cap space. Move Cheech for salary relief gets us back up to seven, bringing up McGinn puts us at six (his cap hit is .997 according to NHL Numbers). We now have six players who need to be signed at six million dollars.
Looking at the long term, it’s likely management will want to shed some salary to allow for some flexibility- both with the salary cap predicted to come down next season, and the history of them never spending to the limit until 08-09. Where that takes us for internal cap is anyone’s guess, but it’s something to keep in mind.
As for signing six players at six million dollars- does that make us as competitive as we were last season? I don’t think so. It effectively rules out making a splash on the free agent market (which might be a non-factor considering we haven’t landed a UFA in their prime for years now), and doesn’t do much in the way of improving the secondary scoring depth that was an issue during the tail end of the season.
Unless a big piece is moved (Michalek, Ehrhoff, Marleau, Nabokov), I just don’t see this team improving on paper from last season. It’s still a playoff team, and one that could compete for the Cup, but it’s not as if great strides were made by ditching role players (Goc, Plihal) for other role players of nearly equal value.

As an aside- I’m not saying Wilson should have extended qualifying offers to Goc or Plihal (although I think Plihal is a good depth forward, and one that could do well for San Jose on the fourth line)- it’s more along the lines of lateral movement vs. improvement.

Very true, although I think what DW is basing his moves on is that its less of an improvement in skill (because the Sharks have gobs of it already), and more of a change in faces, to show that the management is serious about winning, and won’t just keep guys because they do well in the regular season. They’re stuck with a lot of the top guys, between the NTCs and how awesome Pavelski and Seto are (and cheap, you can’t forget cheap).
Oh, and more and more do I see Michalek being moved. He’s pretty much the only player that doesn’t have an NTC that isn’t completely vital to the future. I mean, Pavelski, Seto, and Vlasic – enough said. Its hard to find comparable replacements for Ehrhoff and Murray for similar or better prices (okay, maybe Murray, but still). McGinn can be put in Michalek’s role; granted, he probably won’t get 50+ (although, the same was said about Seto and look where he ended up…), but he’s $3M cheaper and that can be used to sign guys that are more suited to the grinding role of the third line.

Well it's quite possibly going to get rough after next season.
I know I’ve said it before, but those short contracts for Patty and Joe are really looking like good ideas right now. Unless DW is going to seriously shake things up with our top earners, he won’t be bringing in anyone making that kind of money. Just needing to fill out the 3/4 lines and a backup goalie isn’t that bad. Things could definitely be worse.
And I do believe that’s a Purple Haze bottle cap in your collection there.

Speaking of caps...
I made this hat in college. It was eventually all beer caps. In this pic, it was just the bill.

Awesome
Totally off the topic of the post, but I have a 6-year-old beer cap collection in my desk. There are quite a few of the same ones in my collection as there are in that graphic.
As far as hockey (that’s what this site is about, right?). I agree with Lurker:
Unless DW is going to seriously shake things up with our top earners, he won’t be bringing in anyone making that kind of money. Just needing to fill out the 3/4 lines and a backup goalie isn’t that bad. Things could definitely be worse.
Further, as has been touched on in this post already, it’s not necessarily changing the skill levels of the players as much as it is changing the players themselves. DW has given the team everything it needed in terms of talent, and it has consistently fallen short when it counts. On paper we were one of the best teams in the league last year and look where it got us. Thus, if you’ve followed the way I and others here have drifted, the change in faces would be the next logical step in DW’s quest for the Cup.

UGH
Pretty disappointed with what happened or what didn’t happen today. I wasn’t really hoping for a big free agent signing but i was hoping to see something happen that i could see as a positive. I don’t really like the amount Huskins was signed for. Hopefully we will trade Murray or Ehrhoff , Lukowhich , Marleau ,and Cheechoo. I pray that DW will somehow sign Grier or Moen even though he said Grier isn’t returning. I’m really afraid what happened in Ottawa will happen here in SJ. I hope DW can do something in the next few days.

Time for some rosterbation- who do you guys see moving?
Huskins will likely be an upgrade over Luko, but that’s not nearly enough considering the cap space available. Take into account Mitchell and Clowe (roughly 4.25 M for the pair?), and it looks like the “changes” DW was talking about are likely going to be closer to ten than the “six to eight” he was previously considering.
Brad Lukowich: Necessary, plain and simple.
Jonathan Cheechoo: The consensual pick, but if (worst case) Clowe walks, do you keep him? You might have to and slide him up to the first line with Joe and Patty. Clowe re-signs, have to move him.
Milan Michalek: Out of the top six (discluding Cheechoo), he seems to be the likely solution. I was impressed by his progress this season defensively, but that contract would free up a lot of space. Likely a good return as well.
Christian Ehrhoff: Lots of positives and negatives here, but once again the contract and return is big enough to free up space.
Douglas Murray: Contract might not be worth 2.5. Downside is you lose some sandpaper, although Huskins might make up for that. Return probably minimal.
Patrick Marleau: Price has to be right. Moving him would kill me due to the fact finding a two way forward with that skill set is hard, but I wouldn’t label him as untouchable at this stage of the game. Not with the cap shaking up to look like that. We’ve covered him so much this offseason in the comments I think we know where everyone stands.
Evgeni Nabokov: Concern would be he’s heading into a contract year and would play better. Return on him would be good however. I think we could get more at the deadline, though- teams tend to overpay at that time of year, but then again, the economy and shrinking cap next season makes banking on that might dicey. Same with Patty, we covered this a lot in the comments and probably know where everyone stands.
Basically the only untouchables are Boyle, Blake, Vlasic, Thornton, Pavelski, and Setoguchi. Looking at the numbers, I can’t figure out anyway Wilson sticks with all the aforementioned “trade prospects”, especially with Clowe and Mitchell still needing to get offers.
We’re not boned just yet, but I’m starting to get a little fucking worried.

not sure what are the positives and negatives of it, but that’s my gut feeling. If we get Gustavsson, there’s a chance with Nabby I guess but I doubt it

Uh, I’m not sure you should be looking for reliable sandpaper out of Huskins — it’s a bit come-and-go. I’ll do my writeup on the guy tomorrow, but keep in mind it’s been months since anybody has seen Huskins Time on the ice.

I don’t even have the energy to try and speculate on who’s staying or going. I want to, but my mind is flat at the thought.
If Patty goes……oh man, I don’t even know what to say if that happens.

Stuck
Is DW stuck with players that other teams undervalue?? Because of the playoff failures, are we stuck with this group until their contracts end?? We all saw DW’s public talk about changes, but nothing but overpaying Clowe and Huchins and giving Blake what he is worth..No trades, no free agents, other teams getting stronger in the west..
I think we are looking at a real fight for the division and fourth or fifth in the conference..Chicago and Calgary have made big moves, Detroit we know about, so it looks like
we are going backwards here..
Will we make the only move left out there and get Heatly??
