Stanley Cup Finals Game 5 Open Thread, plus points leaders

Amazingly, the Stanley Cup will not be in the house tonight - and for that, we (except ang6666 who sold her soul to the Winged Wheel) are grateful.

Keys for a Pittsburgh win?  In no particular order = the Penguins need to continue to exploit Detroit's weaknesses with special teams.  Marc-Andre Fleury needs to continue to play like Chris Osgood played in the first two games.  Marian Hossa needs to be reminded of the bad karma, because I guarantee you the thought has crossed his mind since Game 4 ended.  Pittsburgh needs to win one away from home, because if the home team keeps winning, it's Wings in 7.

Game 6 will, of course, be an elimination game, and the Stanley Cup WILL be in the Mellon Arena on Tuesday.  The team that faces elimination will be decided tonight.  GO PENS.

POINTS DURING THE FIRST FOUR GAMES OF THE FINALS

Detroit

POINTS LEADERS

  2. Henrik Zetterberg, 4 points

  6. Max Talbot, 3 points

I’m starting to dislike Pittsburgh. I don’t know why. Is it there colors or something? I don’t know I just want them to lose. I also don’t want Detroit to win. So… I’m really confused right now.

You know, all three Pittsburgh sports franchises (Steelers, Pirates and Penguins) have the same colors. That’s pretty unique.

Go Penguins!

How can anyone root for the Wings? You always root for the underdog unless you really despise the other team. And I’m not sure why people despise the Pens, because they’re definitely the underdogs. The only reasons I’ve ever really heard for hatingthe Penguins was that Crosby sucks. And while he may be overmarketed (although I’m not really sure the NHL is overmarketing anything when the best advertisement for a sporting event I’ve ever seen is never on TV when hockey isn’t on), I love the style of game he plays. He’s nearly always in the right place and there is such a cerebral aspect to his game, he’ll skate off somewhere seemingly uselessly, and 4 seconds later he’s in the perfect position for a one-timer or setting up a great opportunity; it’s really absurd.

Enough with the Crosby love though, hopefully we can see a game like last night. Watching the Pens and Wings play one another is great, because you get to see the amazing defensive work of Lidstrom and Zetterberg. I know everyone’s been saying how Zetterberg has managed to shut Crosby down, but it’s not a result of sound positional play or anything; Zetterberg has been hounding Crosby the entire series, like a Pahlsson or Marchant. Lidstrom on the other hand, knows where the opportunities are. Unlike in earlier series you never see Crosby sitting in front of an open net you never thought would be there a few seconds ago, and that’s mainly due to Lidstrom. He’s the only defenseman I’ve seen that thinks the game at that level. But in addition to the great checking, you get to see really amazing plays on the offense, which you usually don’t get to see watching the Red Wings, who at their scariest, play a cycle game where every point shot gives their opponents a heart attack. The Pens though have a little more creativity mainly because of Crosby and Malkin. You’re far less likely to see something like Talbot’s 1st goal from the Red Wings. A turnover forced by Kunitz, passed to Crosby followed by a beautiful saucer pass to the tape of Talbot’s stick for the one timer home.

When the Sharks were at the top of their game at the start of this season, they had managed to combine both of these characteristics into one style of play that was truly fearsome. They had the checking ability of the Red Wings. In fact I’d say that there aren’t many teams that come close to matching the Red Wings in the defensive ability of their forwards and the Sharks are one of those teams. On defense you can’t really compare anyone with Lidstrom, but the Sharks arguably had superior defensive depth, (Ehrhoff and Murray are arguably better than the Red Wings’ 3rd pairing.) The top 2 centers exemplified both types of offensive play I’ve described. Thornton’s more of the cycle center as exemplified by his ability to protect the puck and maintain possession. Pavelski on the other hand is best known for his hockey IQ, he scores a lot of his goals in a rather Crosby-like fashion by being in the right place at the right time. (This is part of the reason why I’d advocate moving Clowe up to the top line and Seto down to the 2nd, they complement those respective styles of play better, but that’s for another day.)

by tarlinian on Jun 6, 2009 3:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

the main reason to root against the Pens

is that after Crosby wins the cup there’ll be room for nothing in the NHL besides him. At least the league ignores Detroit and pretends they don’t exist when they win.

by DetroiterInNorCal on Jun 6, 2009 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the league ignoring Detroit is more than made up for by their large number of douchebag fans.

Sorry, I dont think the Pens are underdogs at all

Detroit has definitely faced a worse share of injuries, and to some of their best players no less!

I still can’t believe that one of the Detroit players came back two days after having his appendix out!

I am also sick of the NHL promoting the shit out of the Penguins. I get that it’s good for ratings, and that the following back east is massive, but familiarity breeds contempt!

GO HOCKEY!!! Screw both teams!

Agreed

Pens aren’t underdogs just because the Wings juggernaut finished off a Duck team. The only underdog in the playoffs this year was Carolina and Pittsburgh showed to be exactly such.

by stufflife on Jun 6, 2009 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

By underdog I don't necessarily mean the team that came out of nowhere

If you can genuinely say that the Pens are supposed to be as good as the Red Wings, you’re insane. The Pens have exactly three players that are “good”, Crosby, Malkin and Gonchar, and perhaps a few that aren’t bad, Fedotenko, Orpik, Scuderi and maybe Guerin and Kunitz. (Kunitz has been thoroughly useless though.) The Wings on the other hand have a defense which any team would be willing to take any player from. And their forwards, even with Datsyuk still have Zetterberg, Hossa, Franzen. Their 3rd and 4th lines would all be perfectly capable top 6 forwards (except for maybe Draper) other teams. Plus the Wings already won last year, how are the defending champions not the favorites?

The NHL doesn't promote anyone enough

Seriously folks, the NHL doesn’t promote anyone enough. I really don’t understand why you guys think that the Pens are promoted so much. Sure they might be promoted more than the Sharks, but they are in a hockey market and they do have two of the leagues young superstars, but it’s not like I am being bombarded by ads with Crosby or Malkin or other Penguins all the time. As for the Pens being chosen for the NBC GOTW every week, that’s not up to the NHL at all. I never said that NBC bashing wasn’t fun. Their programming choices in nearly every area are stupid beyond belief. It’s not limited to hockey. Most actual NHL ads, or at least the memorable ones, have little or nothing to do with Crosby, like the Cup Raise commercial, which I referenced in my earlier post.

But is it up to the NHL

The schedule for Sunday games is not set by NBC. It’s set by the NHL who choose to cherry pick between Flyers/Rangers/Penguins for playing on Sunday.

Sunday games for the sharks: 10

Sunday Games for the penguins: 10

Sunday games broadcast for the Sharks: 0 (1 Scheduled with the Devils, but got scrapped)

Sunday games for the Penguins: 1,486,452.

I'm really torn on the Kunitz penalty

On one hand, I thought Zetterberg tied Kunitz up and was partially responsible for Kunitz running into Osgood.

On the other hand, I absolutely hate Kunitz because of his time as a Duck (and for this), and I like to see Ducks finally get called for goaltender interference.

I kept the game on

I sort of wonder why, but I know it’s because hockey will be gone soon and I’ll regret not watching the last few games we have this season.

running on.

Just for the record

Apparently the commissioner was there most of the game, and extra security was eventually necessary due the Detroit fans antagonizing him.

He’ll get a better reception at Mellon.

Speaking of Mr Bettman, Mike Chen wrote a pretty good article about what it is that he does a few days back. This is my excuse to link to it

very nice - i missed that one

Good article. Interesting how Detroit fans seem to hate Bettman the most. They’ll get over it when the Cup is awarded.

No matter what the truth is, it’s not as much fun to focus all the hate at the owners, so let’s keep hammering Gary. It’s part of his job anyway, apparently.

again … cause I know I’ve said this before … I’m not wrong … my opinion just differs than you … and here I’m differing from you again … but MY definition of what makes a person a pus is clearly not the same as yours … that does not make me wrong … or a moron … as you clearly seems to think it does … :)

so buddy boy … grow the fuck up … not everyone in life is going to agree with your opinions or definitions … that is just life … :)

So that was kinda cool how all the fans were singing the songs after the play started. Its always fun to have a crowd sing a song.

But wow, the Pens sucked. Detroit just completely outplayed them. I was actually slightly disappointed that the Wings didn’t score one more. Ah, well. Its back to Mellon Arena on Tuesday – hopefully the Pens can save face and force a Game 7.

The whole time I was like “uhh Justice League of America?”. Why it’s Joe Louis Arena! And I’ve been through this before…

That confused me at first as well. Especially because I was a super DC comics nerd a year ago.

But as for good news on the sports front, my brother’s baseball team won 24-3 today. So, that’s a plus.

I just want another team to go through the same thing we had to. Spread the misery, as you will.
