UFA of the Day: Travis Moen
Funny thing... It's seems like you (collectively) and I write these articles in the comments of other threads. Just like with Mitchell, the argument for/against resigning Moen has already been hashed out in detail... lemme see if I can find some quo... shabam! Got um. Do you really think I would have brought them up if I couldn't deliver? Pshaa.
we don’t play hockey like anaheim, he is built for that team. Hope that makes sense well it does if you understand the two teams, but bad bad trade, which is funny because we were all praising it at the time, probably just because we didn’t know much about the prospects and won’t for a long time.
He played well in a few games. The one where he got a shorty and the one where he was the only player to score a goal stand out in my mind, but other than that he was fairly invisible.
Moen is a role player who plays much better when he can consistently play with the same players of a long period of time. He was constantly being juggled around since day 1 with the team (do in large part to the team already being riddled with injuries) and thus never developed chemistry and the little things that helps make his game effective. Give him line mates that he can play with night after night and you’ll see the kind of player he was with Anaheim.
Moen-Mitchell-McGinn/Staubitz
I say re-sign three of those four and make it a line combination.
We do need a defensive stopper line, and while I liked the idea of adding a guy like Moen, I don’t really like Moen himself. He seemed to shrink against his former team, and played well in about four of the twenty games he was here.
-Yours Truly
As you can see, there are some pro-Moens and some anti-Moens.
The Pro-Mo's see what he was with Anaheim, and hope that he can bring that fire next year with the Sharks. Hell, I hope that too, because with Grier likely on his way out it would be nice to have someone who could fill in immediately on the PK. If Moen plays like he did for the Ducks, I see this move as a no brainer.
However, he didn't play well in the 20+ he was with the Sharks, so signing him is a big risk. Do you believe that he'll turn it around and play like he has for most of his career, or is the recent sucktitude (technical term) what we should come to expect? That's what the Anti-Mo's are afraid of.
As you can see by my quote (wow big ego, quotin' myself), I'm in the Anit-Mo party. I've started to come around as I've wrote this article, though. Why?
When you are signing a free agent, you always take a big risk. I think it's lucky that we got to see Moen play for the team this year; even though he didn't do what we expected him to do, the games that he played in will only help him become a bigger part of this team. By bringing in a new player, you destroy the chemistry that Moen has built, and who's to say that a guy like Taylor Pyatt will be any better than Moen would. It's risky.
Also, with the cap looming, Moen's $925,000 salary is pretty darn attractive. Unlike Taylor Pyatt (who's making over $1.5 MM) he's not going to command a huge raise and could be had on the cheap.
In addition, signing Moen isn't going to take playing time away from McGinn, as long as Grier takes a hike. So that's another point for the Pro-Mo's. I hereby switch allegiances. Call me a flip flopper.
Let's just hope we get this Moen, and not the Moen pictured above.

He certainly hasn’t been the first acquisition to not preform as desired, but he seems to like it here, (which, dear gawd, is a huge plus), and I agree with Teas assessment that he didn’t have much time to gel before he was shuffled around due to all the injuries on the Sharks. Give him that time, and I expect to see him preform far better than he did during his short stint with us this season.
Plus, he doesn’t like Ott. Never a bad thing.

Coming into a new team (especially a team your old team hates) has got to be difficult – yes I know they make millions of dollars, but they are still human (except for Thomas, Hiller and the other Cylons infiltrating the NHL.) And didn’t his wife just have a baby before he was traded or right after or something?
I just think we should give him some more time to get comfortable and gel with his new teammates/linemates.
by AfroPuff on Jun 9, 2009 8:41 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
We know he can do it
He just didnt get it done for us, but nobody did!
Whatever the reason this year, things might be different next year.
I am on the fence myself. But saying that, it still largely depends on what he wants cash wise. Also, I’d be sad to see him walk given what we gave to get him.
Between 1 -1.2 Million is probably all I’d be happy to fork over.

Moen is clearly different from Mitchell, and an upgrade over Grier and Staubitz. 1-1.5M is the right ballpark. And I’m personally disappointed that you decided to go with the moniker “Anti-Mo” instead of “No-Mo”.

How the hell did I miss that opportunity.

Pro-Mo
I love that line combo. Moen adds the grit, Mitchell the speed, and McGinn the energy. That could be a really good checking line for the Sharks. As far as I know all three of those guys can apply the pressure and land hits on the forecheck and are pretty damn good on defense, with McGinn being the only guy whose defensive prowess is still relatively unknown to me. Great line proposal though, especially since Grier, IMO, is most definitely gone this offseason.

Completely on the fence
a. I thought I’d heard he was unlikely to sign with the Sharks because he wanted to go back to Anaheim
b. NOT signing him would NOT bring back what the Sharks gave up
c. He would be a fairly cheap acquisition for the third line
d. He’s not Mike Grier – which is good. I fucking hate Grier
e. Shorthanded goals usually mean good speed and positioning
Geez, that didn’t help me one bit. I voted no because you didn’t tell me the price until after I clicked.

He can’t demand that much cash – I also think we’ll get some level of discount since he’s already stated he’d like to stay and I’m pretty sure his wife is a Californian. For a team who’s grit is often questioned, this is the kind of player we need, especially with Grier almost certainly gone. He didn’t play very well in the playoffs, but really, who did besides Danny?

Hmmm...
This Moen looks much better than that Moen.
Say Moen isn’t resigned. Who’s going to take Moen/Grier’s job? New guy or Woo-Shark? Or maybe Brad Staubitz becomes a incredibly talented hockey player? Yeah sounds about right.

After you mentioned his previous salary, he seems even more attractive to be re-signed. And did I get quoted? WOOT!!!!

The thing that attracts me to Moen is his role. The Sharks need a checking line presence, and from what I’ve seen from Worcester, it doesn’t look like there’s anybody in the coffers who could do that effectively over the course of an 82 game season.
I completely agree with Teas- a checking line guy needs to develop chemistry with his linemates to be affective. It’s not like picking up a goal scorer at the deadline who’s sole purpose is to put pucks in the net.
Contract looks good to me. Mark me down as Pro-Mo.

Conditional Draft Pick
Has the conditional draft pick been considered? I think there was something about something if we don’t re-sign Huskins or Moen during the offseason??
I’m really on the fence about this one…

I think
it’s if either of them re-sign with Anaheim or if one of them didnt play (which obviously is the case) then the pick is either returned or it moves to a later round.

five stipulations attached to the deal between the clubs:
1. In the event San Jose qualifies for the 2009 Stanley Cup Final, then San Jose will transfer Buffalo’s second-round draft pick in the 2009 Draft (previously acquired), instead of San Jose’s 4th round draft pick in 2011.
2. In the event San Jose re-signs one or both of Moen or Huskins for the 2009-10 season, then San Jose will also transfer its own fourth-round pick in the 2012 Draft.
3. In the event Anaheim re-signs one or both of Moen or Huskins for the 2009-10 season, then Anaheim will transfer its own fourth-round draft pick in the 2011 Draft.
4. In the event San Jose and Anaheim each sign one of the above players for the 2009-10 season, then the transfers referenced in 2 and 3 are cancelled out.
5. The transfer by San Jose of its fourth-round draft pick in 2011 (or Buffalo’s 2nd round draft pick in 2009) is conditioned on both Moen or Huskins playing at least one (1) game (regular season or playoffs) for San Jose during the 2008-09 season.

I truly believe that if Moen were given just a little bit more time to gel with his line mates then we would be solid. A true down-in-the-trenches checking line was something greatly desired last year, and I think that Moen will fill that role nicely in the coming year. Now it would just be a matter of who the organization chose to skate with him on that line. Thoughts?

I LOVE IT
Even if McGinn is not a checker, his speed as well as Mitchell’s will bring plenty of chances, and adds much needed scoring to the lower lines.
