Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 Open Thread
Can Gary Bettman you believe it?
The Penguins have tied the series yet again, and the series returns to the Joe Louis Arena for one of the most exciting things in hockey - a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
What could more exciting, you ask? Game 7 in overtime.
But I'm getting ahead of myself - the game is Friday, which gives us 72 hours to salivate and battle hypertension while mulling over hypothetical scenarios.
In the comments, please place your final vote BEFORE THE GAME STARTS as to who you think will win the Conn Smythe. Will it be Evgeni Malkin, win or lose? One of the Wangs?
And of course, there's our standard poll (sorry to beat this issue to death) =

why not go with the wild card?

Everyone is going to say Malkin … so just to be different, and altho with the Pens win tonight he probably just now lost it … but I’ll just say Osgood. And Wings in 7!!
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

Malkin for Conn Smythe
No matter the result, he wins. And also, is it just me, or does Kronwall get away WITH A LOT of interference calls? It’s like watching Chris Pronger and the Ducks defensive corps all over again.

Geno
Because his point totals have been astounding.
Although, I did notice he kept pulling Joe Thorntons during Game 6 and passing the puck along the blue line, through defenders, etc. It was kind of annoying, but also made it easier for me to imagine that the Sharks were playing, lol.
Oh, and one more thing:
…one of the most exciting thingsFIFY. Because any championship game 7 is automatically up there under “most exciting things.”in hockey– a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

If it goes to OT, I don’t care whether or not you like hockey, it rockets straight to the top of the exciting list. I honestly cannot think of anything else on that level of “OMG,” if you will.

Should be a dandy
Geno if the Pens win.
Osgood if the Red Wings win.
MAF had that huge game 5 last year at Joe Louis. Stopped 55 of 58 shots. Held down the fort for 3 overtimes and prevented the Red Wings from winning on their home turf. Nobody (ahem… Pierre McGuire) needs to tell the Flower that he can’t play lights out at the Joe when it counts.
Crosby’s been an impact player. He hasn’t put up the points this series, but he’s been a versatile two-way player. On hockey’s biggest stage, I’m sure he’ll deliver. Nobody wants to win as bad as he does. I expect the 3rd line to come up huge for the Pens.
A game 7 between last year’s teams’. What a way to finish off the season. I hope it’s a great game.
Where hockey injuries in San Diego are thumb blisters from playing too much NHL 09
Pens win 1-0.
Fleury gets his ultimate redemption for the series.
And Malkin wins the Smythe.
By the way, just because I feel like it I guess . . . if you want to Fuck Detroit in style, there will likely be a Game 7 GDT over at SLGT. We’ve had one for Games 5 & 6, both set up by our friend spectr17. I’m sure you folks are invited!

That’s awesome!
Here’s what sucks though – I won’t be around for Game 7 because I’ll be at my grandma’s 80th birthday. Not that that sucks – I just wish I could do both. I leave for a big trip on Saturday, too, so my life is crazy enough without a Game 7 making me sweat!
But for those FTFers that haven’t been to St. Louis Game Time – this is your in, baby! Donut King and the gang will treat you well, though they might revoke ang6666’s membership for pulling for the Wheel. ;-)

The winning team will have the Conn Smythe
If the Pens win, it’ll obviously be Malkin.
If the Wings win, it’ll be Osgood…who deserves it. He’s been a beast.
I think the Wings will win game 7, so if I have to pick one, I’ll say Osgood will win Conn Smythe.
There won’t be one of those where the losing team still has the playoffs mvp on it, because there hasn’t been one outstanding, dominant player…

but quoting a yahoo article, the road team in league championship round game 7’s since 1979 for the MLB, NBA, and NHL are 0-19. I think that speaks to the power of home field/ice advantage on the most magical of sports stages, and JLA is legend in itself. The last team to do it? The Pittsburgh Pirates. Imagine that. Still, go wings. Also, I have a 5 Liter heineken keg all ready for tomorrow. Even with me and a buddy splitting it, I’m not gonna be in posting condition come game time. I aint no Mr. K

I don't like you Detroit.
Sorry about the insults. Everyone has an opinion, but....
The Penguins have been outscored 11-2 on Detroit ice this series…not lookin’ good. Fleury sucks at the Joe. Not good. Detroit is just flat out better. They have nearly the same roster as last year, oh yeah, plus a guy named Marian Hossa. He, although nearly invisible this series, is a pretty damn good hockey player who was on the opposing team last year, and lost. So Detroit will be kissing Lord Stanley for the second year in a row. Oh and you can’t say momentum will carry Pittsburgh in because that didn’t work out too well in Game 5 did it?
by Sir Snipesalot on Jun 10, 2009 12:42 PM PDT reply actions
much better argument
I would however say that a game 6 win has way more momentum potential than a game 4 win
Hodl on gusy, I need to sue the batheroom....
I think the whole “plus Detroit has Hossa this year!” argument is basically moot. He gets about 20 min of TOI per game, and has no goals to show from it – he’s been a non-factor in pretty much every game of the series. Its almost like saying that because the Wings now have Conklin as a backup, they’re going to win.
I do have to give Detroit an advantage because of the dominance they have at the Joe, but I don’t think the Pens are going to bend over like they did in Game 5. I expect a really close game with both teams playing out of their minds, and hopefully with the Pens ending up on top.

2008 Game 5
Before we assume that MAF will suck on friday, let us recall how he single-handedly prolonged the pens season with 9,000 saves in game 5 at the Joe. Could happen again. That’s what great about playoffs, and what’s weird about Wings mailing it in for first half of Tuesday.
With all that said, anyone who wants to put money on the pens in this game is quite welcome to contact me!

Fear The Fin = We're not as think as you drunk we are.
On the subject of Wings without a Cup (because there are so many...)
Here are the players on the current roster that don’t have a Cup (either a ring or their name on it) =
- Marian Hossa
- Ville Leino
- Jonathan Ericsson
- Ty Conklin
Leino and Ericsson are both 25 and rookies, which leaves Hossa and Conklin, both of whom were with Pittsburgh last year. Conklin has played the required 40 games (exactly), so he will get his name on the Cup if Detroit wins.
Justin Abdelkader played 2 games last year with the Wings, so he received a Cup ring and was on the ice for the group photo.
Other current Wings who received a ring though they didn’t play in the Finals were Aaron Downey, Tomas Kopecky, and Derek Meech.

Plus NBC and Versus has adopted him as the second coming. I mean, for a guy that was in the AHL for pretty much all of the regular season, he sure gets talked about a lot.
And Torrey Mitchell’s short-handed goal is still awesome, especially since its against the Ducks.

Shit went down when I was asleep!
Sir Snipes is a really good friend, I’ve known him for like 8 years. Although he is a Sharks fan first, his family is from Detroit, and he’s got a big man crush on Datsyuk.
If Datsyuk was all like, “Here’s my balls, would you like to lick them?”, Sam would be like “I will lick until I am completely out of saliva.”
And Sam, although I think Detroit will win, I would like to see the Pens win this year. Don’t know why, but yeah. This is seriously the matchup I wanted to see the least.
Fear the Fin: Where we just have to want it more!
I was going to say...
only 8 Matt? thank you for clearing that up. On to the other stuff. I was rooting for the Pens last game because I wanted to see a game 7. I love game 7 cup final hockey more than a majority of things(including you, by the way. haha) and there is nothing more awesome than seeing the home team win the cup. Last years celebration was, unfortunately, boring to watch. And on the Datsyuk thing. I don’ t know about until my saliva runs out, but maybe for like 5 minutes. Ha. I hope this game 7 goes into OT with the Wings coming out on top. But seriously, who doesnt like cup final OT?

Datsyuk...
hasn’t had a hundred point season because Detroit’s scoring is so balanced.
by Sir Snipesalot on Jun 12, 2009 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions
that should just make him even more dangerous
because opposing teams shouldn’t be concentrating on only locking him up. Bottom line is he doesn’t produce like the other top players do.
I don't like you Detroit.
Not necessarily...
Zetterberg has never had a hundred either. Hossa didn’t this year. Franzen hasn’t. All of the players on the team produce which means that teams have to focus on the team as a whole rather than just one main player. Yes, teams may not focus on him but that leave him open to score and if they focus on him it leaves somebody else. Detroit is the most balanced team in the league and it is very very difficult to have three 100 point scorers on one team.

I think I'm gonna adress the whole "insults" thing right now....
Ok guys, so I’ve been reading through the comments a little bit, and I want to take the “insult” issue head on.
Ang, I totally understand your point, and I think that some people (erhem) take it a bit too far at times. There is no excuse for overly attacking someone, remember, we’re trying to keep it fun.
However, let’s remember that the topic of this site is sports. Other than politics, it’s the one thing that can get people most riled up. Understand that people are going to say what they are going to say, and act how they are going to act. If you’ve ever gone to a game at an away venue…it’s like that. There is no getting away from it.
In addition, this is teh interwebs. When someone can type their insults and not have to face the person they are dissing, words said can get a bit nastier than usual. Just understand that people are going to say what they are going to say, and let it roll off as best you can.
I think Sir Snipes had the right idea, he made a broad statement (you’re all stupid, or whatever), but then responded with a well thought out argument. I take no offense to either thing he said. These are the kinds of things that get the discussions going. And since the comment wasn’t directed at one person (he didn’t know who was rooring for either team), I didn’t find it offensive.
I’m going to go ahead and ask eveyone to try to be a bit nicer to each other, but I’m not bringing the hammer down because I think we have a good feel going here. If you have specific issues with specific people, send me or Plank an email, and we’ll talk to them. Although you may like to defend yo’selves, let’s try not to start huge catfights on the boards.
As always, have fun!

That, as a Pens fan as well, I wish I was going to watch the Sharks game 7 of the SCF tonight? That, and watch them win the Cup.
Ah well lol
That should be sometime in the future, I hope.
God, I hope it doesn’t take a decade or more!
And well since that’s not the case tonight, I’m going to have a heart attack watching this game 7.
I’ve called off from work, and it’ll be the first time I’ll watch an entire SCF game in this series.
Ugh, I feel way too many emotions already.
I’m like a champagne bottle ready to explode!
Tonight at the end of it all I’ll spill anyway.
Either with happiness or misery.
Go PENS.
Do it.
GO PENS
I’m not going to be around at all today – just signing in one last time for the summer. Leaving today for my grandmother’s, and then tomorrow night for the east coast. I’ll be in Sweden one week from today.
If you want me to add you to my email list, shoot me an email (see my profile).
It’s been a pleasure being on the interwebs with youz guyz. Enjoy your summer!

I suppose if you havent plaid in the playoff’s it’s ok to get a haircut. Personally, I wouldnt risk it myself.

NHL 09 Says....
Pittsburgh wins 4-3. Goals by Staal (x2, one shortie), Guerin, and Kunitz. The Wings season ends on a power play, and Brooks Orpik has “The Shift Part Two.”
I played as Pittsburgh, for those interested. Off to the television.
Go Pens.

Woo Pens!
Sorry I’ve been MIA; between graduation, Grad Night, recovering from Grad Night, and my dad’s 50th birthday, its been a busy two days.
That said, we went to Double D’s for my dad’s birthday dinner so we could watch the game, and it was PACKED. I think all but one TV was turned to the game. There were a TON of Wings jerseys there, but there was a good portion of the crowd rooting for Pittsburgh. We were at a table between six Sharks fans rooting for the Pens and a table of three die-hard Wings fans. It was pretty interesting, and fun. When the Pens won the place erupted. I was happy, especially since NBC kept focusing on Hossa. The irony was the main reason for my temporary allegiance to the Pens.

Fools and Sages
that was so funny
right after the game they just kept going to the pens celebrating then hossa and back and forth he deserves it
I don't like you Detroit.
Congratulations to the Pens!
You beat the Detroit Red Wings, the best NHL organization of the last two decades in their house in game 7. I’m impressed.
LMAO
Anyone who think…
the Penguins are going to win aren’t very smart people. Seriously they have no chance
Sorry about the insults. Everyone has an opinion, but….
I don't like you Detroit.
In his defense, it was very likely for the Wings to win at home, especially with home ice being so important in this series, and the fact that the Wings are so dominant at the Joe (except against the Islanders, lol). And I don’t think anybody saw the Penguins playing as well as they did compared to the Wings.
But, yeah, that first comment is kind of an all-or-nothing thing that didn’t exactly pan out. At all.

Fools and Sages
well....
I stand corrected. Congrats to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Definitely deserved that Game 7 win. Great game to watch as well.
