Yeah, it’s a tough business. A lot of fans expect the players to be both saints (sign autographs for hours, always make time for fans when they’re out and about) and robots (never have a bad day or week, immediately bounce back from tough losses, accept being just a cog in a machine, accept all the abuse hurled at them by fans).

i've been trying to say this all along,
we have two expiring contracts in nabby and marleau, these are two major assets for teams wanting to clear cap space.

How does DW expect to collect a first line winger and most of a third and fourth line for Marleau?
Originally a NorthStars fan, but Modano is all that remains.
easily
bad teams want to get rid of players that have long-term deals, so they trade for expiring contracts so they can rebuild their team for the future.
I don't like you Detroit.
Yeah, but I don’t think San Jose can afford any bad deals with our salary cap situation. Not to play chicken little or anything, but it’s pretty dire.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
im saying that does because we lock somebody up long term,
thats not a bad deal. You’ve got to understand that this is San Jose not Detroit not a Canadian team not pittsburgh not new york. The only way we can go out and get a good player is by trade. How do you think Joe came here a massive blockbuster trade, that is our only out. Draft people or trade for people or sign mediocre ones in between. Its sad but it’s true.
I don't like you Detroit.
But you have to qualify that as depending on the player.
Locking up a guy like Zetterberg long term? Good deal. Locking up a guy like Gaborik long term? Probably not so much. Locking up Chelios long term? Time for a new GM.

Very true. I think moving him over to RW and keeping Mitchell at 3 is the best case if Patty is moved off the first line though. Not that I’m advocating that or anything, I just assumed we were speaking in hypotheticals.

He’s not fast or big, how would that make for a good grinder?
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
Nah
Pavelski is growing into his own as a second line center, and Patty did well as a winger this season. I’d almost advocate for Patty dropping down to the second line on Pavs’s wing, and then getting another sniper for Joe (or just moving Michalek up) – Pavelski’s line is much more of a “create your own goal” line, while anyone that plays with Joe has to expect him doing a lot of the set-up.

It kind of depends on the depth of the team, really. I could see Pavs sliding to RW.
Regardless, we’ve got awhile to go until that happens. Am I the only one real concerned with the current cap situation (mind you, Clowe is still unsigned & probably looking for at least 3 per)?

Pavs could be moved to the wing
But I think it’d be a mistake to move him out of his natural position at this point in his career

conversation a bit premature i agree
what i think we should get out of this is that either way there are going to be strengths and weaknesses, I just want to spread the wealth a little if you will, lets remember how bad our secondary scoring was against anaheim, kinda a mood point when our second line was money early in the year though, things are complicated you could say.

I think I like Clowe with Thornton.
Imagine Clowe up at the net with Thornton (and Heatley) on the ice as well. Thornton can play on the boards and behind the net which is what he does best.
Yeah, I just thought of that.
Seto probably works best up there
I do too, but I think Clowe’s size will be needed on the second line. And I’d like for Seto to use his speed to open up some ice for Joe and Heatley to shoot (again, not that I WANT Heatley, but I’d like Seto to do this anyway).
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
That was my thinking. With the playmaker in Thornton and goal-scorer in Heatley, there needs to be Clowe to get any potential rebounds.
And while the second line gets smaller, it stays gritty and has that ability to make their own goals. The two centermen will also help set up Seto.
But, like ElvisVF101 said, there wouldn’t be a third or fourth line because of the cap.

after 11/12 his contract drops to 6m in 12/13 and then 5m in 13/14. Few players are worth 7+m a year, but Heatley is one of them. Not saying the Sharks have to make this move, but I don’t think he’s overpaid nearly as much as most players who’ve signed contracts in the 08 or 09 free agent periods.
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
That's his pay, not his cap hit.
Cap hit will stay constant over the term of the contract. Back and front loading just changes what the team actually has to shell out for a player in a given year. Michalek’s contract is a good example of the reverse. He makes 3.5 this season but is a 4.3 cap hit.
