Sharks re-sign Ryan Vesce plus sign four others
San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed Group III unrestricted free agent forward Ryan Vesce to a one-year contract and signed defenseman Joe Callahan and Danny Groulx, center Dwight Helminen and right wing Jed Ortmeyer to one-year contracts. Per club policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

I do not know what to make of this.
Are these all two way contracts and do they count against the cap, and would we still have room to sign Mitchell, Staubitz, etc?

I’d imagine they’re all 2-way deals. Vesce may not be but I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t. I don’t know much about the other guys, except for Ortmeyer who could realistically be a 4th-line checker at some point this year.
That’s two former-Predators in two days, please no Tootoo though!
Oh, so that's where you edit your signature
Nice!
All seem like they’ll add more “depth to the organization” (quoting DW, who said it about every single one of these guys). I like how all of them except Groulx have some NHL experience, so the Sharks won’t be caught high and dry in case the injury bug hits again. In fact, I could see Ortmeyer becoming a fourth line winger in place of having both Shelley and Staubitz – he has 230 games of NHL experience, and while he’s not exactly the biggest scorer in the world, he doesn’t look like a penalty liability. Not sure about his defensive prowess, though. Helminen looks like a good AHL player, with around 40-50 points.
Oh, and Callahan went to Yale. Nice.

More on Ortmeyer
Apparently, he’s good defensively, but Goc-like offensively. Now I’m starting to think he’s mainly an AHL signing with some chance to come up to SJ if/when the injury bug hits.
Oh, and one little bit on Groulx – he’s the only one not considered NHL-caliber. All the other guys will likely have a chance to be called up.

VESCE!
Although, I hope they are all 2 way. If not, they’d make my post this morning all the more dire.

I would hope they were all 2 way

Groulx – 6’0" 203lbs
Callahan – 6’3" 221lbs
Helminen – 5’10" 191lbs
Ortmeyer – 6’0" 190lbs
Vesce – 5’8" 175lbs
With the exception of Callahan, all the new signings tend to be on the small side. I’d think all of them would get 2 way contracts, with the possible exception of Groulx.
Oh, and Helminen’s first name makes me want to do a photoshop. Hehe, Dwight.

Sorry for the triple post, but....
If he goes to the AHL, can he be the Assistant to the bottom line forward(s)?

Dwight Helminen's bobblehead
Wasn’t quite sure what his title should be.

He looks like an Ivy League grad- Cornell, maybe.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I just checked the Sharks’ roster here, and it lists Helminen with the big club. Interesting; out of the five I’d say Ortmeyer would be the most likely, but Helminen did have a pretty good year in the AHL, and was describe by DW as “high energy” (which is probably what he’s going for with the fourth line).

And it does not include Vesce, interesting.

Vesce was the captain of the WorSharks and much more effective on the AHL level, being the offensive leader in pretty much every category for Worcester. If he has a great training camp, he might make it up to the big club, but I think the organization likes him down in the AHL because of his size.
Then again, the Sharks signed a similarly-sized Nichol, so who knows.

If Danny Groulx is anything like Claude Giroux I’ll be happy.
In all seriousness though, good on DW for signing some players away from other organizations. That makes me happy.

Trade Bait
These are decent signings, but part of me wonders if these guys are just pot sweeteners for larger trades/roster moves. Is this what we’re going to have to part with to get Columbus to give us better returns for Erhoff? Also potentially the Isles for Cheechoo (because, you know, Eklund said that trade is imminent!)?

No. A sign-and-trade agreement is NBA related
It’s a contract based on their salary cap rules/regulations.
As for the NHL, a trade occurs before signing. All teams are allowed to offer the same amount of $/length of contract, so there’s no point in inking a player & then shipping him out (and interested teams would prefer it if they themselves negotiated the contract). It does occur in the NHL, though rarely (as the case was w/ Hossa & Ottawa). If anything, it’s poor form by the GM.
