Clowe Signed- 4 years @ 3.5 per [Update: "North of 3.5"] [Update 2: 4 years @ 3.6- Confirmed]
Solid deal, although I wish the dollar amount would have been a little less. Cap space is looking mighty tight nowadays, but in reality that was near market value.
Here is what we had to say about him going into free agency.
Welcome back Cloweverfield.
H/T to a10dency2ask for the link
[Update 1:27 AM]: I could have possibly misread it initially or it has been updated. Regardless, Lebrun is now saying Clowe's contract will be "north of $3.5 M."
We'll see how high it goes, but I'm suddenly not as sold on the deal as I was before. Color me concerned.
[Update 3:34 PM]: Clowe is at 3.6 per year. "Concerned" no longer.

Two things for you- a rough look at next season’s lineup (1.774 in space) and a deeper look at what it means for the future.

Good deal
I think 3.5 is a pretty fair reward for a play with 30-30 potential. He may have a few injury concerns, but I think he’s going to be an important piece as the team moves forward. There’s plenty of time to tweak the roster for cap space. I don’t think the Sharks necessarily have to get equal returns on players like Ehrhoff or Cheechoo if they can clear the necessary cap space. I’m sure both players can fetch a reasonable 3rd or 4th liner forward that’s getting paid half as much as either of them.

The cap hit hurts.
But goddam is it good to have him locked up.

I like my dream’s cap hit better (3 years at $3.3M per), but the deal is pretty good, and better than what we would pay for a similar player on the market.

if "north of" is true...
it is really starting to confuse me why, with the cap situation, DW appears to be making moves that are (at least slightly) unnecessarily expensive
by a10dency2ask on Jul 3, 2009 1:53 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
It really is quite strange. I’m going to hold out on commenting on the “big picture” concerning his signings until everything is official, but that Huskins one still has me scratching my head.
Side note: DW can go over the cap (up to like $63 M or so I believe) this offseason, so there’s room to maneuver. It would be a bad idea considering teams would lowball the shit out of any eventual trade offers, but it’s a possibility I guess.

I don’t think it’s unnecessarily expensive. Clowe is a top 6 power forward and if we weren’t going to pay him, someone else with cap space gladly would. Look at how much Edmonton gave Dustin Penner and he had far less NHL experience than Clowe does when he got that big contract.
by Hobbes2d on Jul 3, 2009 2:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Heh, that Penner contract was horrendous.
Clowe’s market value is around what Antropov got (roughly 4 yrs @ $4M per), but that could very well be labeled unnecessarily expensive- probably a worthy price to pay however, if you want to keep Kovalchuck around.

I just think people are freaking out a little bit too much. The Sharks have a couple of trade pieces, all of which would cut payroll if they were willing to take prospects, draft picks or 3rd or 4th line players in exchange.
by Hobbes2d on Jul 3, 2009 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the concern is the question would San Jose would be getting a fair return by moving a player like Milan Michalek for those types of players, and if the team is going to improve next season by doing so.
Not the best situation to be in for a team that just won the Presidents Trophy. It’s very likely the roster is not as good on paper next season as they were this year. I think that’s a worthwhile concern to have.

As good as the team was last year, I think it can do a lot to improve itself, not just in the regular season but their postseason play as well. The team started great out of the gate but while they kept winning in the 2nd half, their production fell off completely. For much of the first half the Sharks were blowing teams out and flat out dominating. Granted injuries played into the 2nd half performance, but when your rookies just called up from the AHL are the best performers on your team over the latter half of the season that is NOT a good sign.
I would kind of prefer the Sharks continue to keep a long term goal in trying to have good cap room and cultivating a contending club and good minor league development etc then trying to go for broke to win a Stanley Cup. As we see with the Rangers or Canadiens that is a really bad way to go. The teams that develop role players to support their core group of players are the ones that succeed.
If the Sharks traded someone like Michalek and weren’t getting great value back in terms of players, I would hope they would get compensation in 2 high draft picks, especially since DW keeps trading away players and picks over the past few years, which has sort of left our minors system weaker then it has been in years past.

phew!
I could give a rats ass about our current cap situation. Priority 1 for this offseason was to bring back The Clowser and now that is accomplished.
I think I pulled my swagger muscle...

CLOWE!
I don’t think we’d be as worried about his price if we weren’t looking at the four headed cap monster right now. We have every indication (should we chose to interpret it that way) that DW shopped around to see what fair market value was for Clowe, so I’m going to just take that as a sign that he didn’t over spend, so much as he spent what he had to to keep him.
I know I’m being a huge homer, but Clowe was someone I really wanted to see back, so dammit, I am going to find a way to justify it!

How official is official?
Being he has RFA status, could another team still offer him more, and could he still take it?
Is there a window for him to say, “that’s an awesome offer, I’ll see what else comes in” ?

Clowe’s contract is official: 4 year deal, no details on the exact amount per year. As per WTC, of course.

More from WTC
Clowe’s contract is around $3.5M per year, so that’s good. Oh, and he never really worried about the trade rumors because of the talks he and the Sharks had.
More stuff about how DW and McLellan called out the second line for not stepping up in the playoffs, how DW isn’t confirming contracts until everything is all set (see: Tallon, Dale), and Pollak points out the obvious in that a big contract already on the roster is going to be moved.

Well, that was paraphrasing on my part – Pollak wrote, “…some high-priced players on the current roster still have to be moved between now and the start of the season.”
