A Modest Proposal...

Everyone who follows hockey knows that the Sharks are up against the cap, with several holes on the roster sill to be filled. While everyone who supports teal would love to see Danny Heatley suit up in San Jose, the likely hood of that happening is very slim. That means that DW has to look in other directions to both cut salary and ice a winning team before the puck drops in October. That said, I have done some digging and number crunching and I have a few moves that I think make the sharks a better team and get them under the cap.

1. Trade Cheech and Luko to the Isles for Jesse Joensuu and picks/prospects.

Cheechoo needs a change of scenery and Lukowich is expendable with the resigning of Huskins. The Islanders need scoring to put along side Tavares and a veteran defense-man to shore up the blue line, plus they have the cap space to absorb both players from the Sharks. Joensuu is a 6'4" 21 year old former second round pick who can line up on either side of center, at the cost of 850,000. This would net a saving of about 3.7 mil for next year.

2. Dump Shelly where ever they can.

I am a fan of Jody Shelly, but to be honest, I would rather have a younger cheaper Brad Staubitz. By replacing Shelly with Staubitz Wilson could save 250k (not a lot but every little bit counts).

3. Sign Manny Malhotra for the neighborhood of 1.75 per year for 2-3 years.

Malhotra is an excellent defender and great in the face-off circle, who can kill penalties with the best of them. Essentially he is Mike Grier five years ago, but better at face-offs. Plus it would benefit Malhotra to be on a perennial playoff team considering he has only been there twice in his career.

4. Resign Torrey Mitchell at 750K per for 2 years and Brad Staubitz to 500K for one year.

These are fair deals for both, giving them raises over last  year while not breaking the bank.

5. Trade Millan Michalek and whatever picks/prospects were received in the Cheechoo deal from New York plus a second rounder next year to the Canadians for Tomas Plekanec and Jaroslav Halak.

Montreal is very small on their first two lines so adding Milan to the left wing of Gomez and Gionta adds some size, and allows Cammalleri to move into his natural position at center on the second line, and balances out the scoring. Tomas Plekanec is a slight downgrade to Michalek, but costs 2 million per year less, for similar production (20 or more goals the last 3 years). Halak though is the prize. This is a goaltender who is young (24), cheep, (775K), and has the skills and makeup of a number one goaltender. Instead of having Greiss as a question mark as the backup, Halak would give the Sharks a reliable presence on the bench who could spell Nabby for 20 plus games next year. He also could push Nabakov to be the number one net-minder of the future, giving DW the freedom of trading one of the Sharks blue chip goalie prospects. This move will save the Sharks about 800K next year.

6. Now here is the kicker: trade Patty for Kovalchuk.

Ilya wants out of Atlanta, and will likely bolt for a winning team in the off-season when he becomes a UFA. Forget Heatley, Kovalchuk has scored 50 goals practically by himself. Put him next to Joe, and Dan Boyle and you have 60 to 70 goal potential. Patty has been scapegoated by the fans and media and could use a change of scenery. This is as close to equal value as Atlanta could get for Kovalchuk, and they have a much better chance of resigning Marleau. while Ilya makes more per year than Patty, the cap hit is for intents and purposes the same, at 6.3 mil.

So this would round out the lineup as such:

Kovalchuk-Thornton-Seto

Plekanec-Pavelski-Clowe

Mitchell-Malhotra-Mcginn

Joensuu-Nichol-Ortmeyer

Staubitz

Boyle-Vlassic

Blake-Huskins

Erhoff-Murry

Joslin

Nabokov

Halak

All of this gives San Jose 13 forwards, 7 defense-men, and 2 goalies, while fitting just under the cap.

i’m still not into trading patty, not sure why he needs a change of scenery when he was the best player on the team last season. the other stuff, eh, we’ll see what happens!

I'm not quite sure how modest this is...

I think getting Kovalchuk is on par with, if not better than Dany Heatley.

(And I wish I didn’t have as big of a man-crush on Patty, so I could reaally embrace getting Kovalchuk, who would be awesome with Thornton.)

by jwizzle241 on Jul 22, 2009 5:11 PM PDT reply actions

This was very modest until the Patty trade…

…which honestly intrigues me. I DO love Patty, and want him to stay.

But you’re right. We’re up against the cap. We need changes.

On just an initial gut reaction, I like this set up. The face of the team is changed. The pieces SEEM appropriate (I haven’t seen enough of Josseneau, Malhotra or Plekanec to know if they are what we think they are and what we need), but I think your strategy is basically sound.

The Kovalchuk part is the kicker obviously. Does Atlanta really trade 1:1 and basically come out with exactly the same scenario? I mean, Kovi probably walks next season. In truth, wouldn’t Patty as well? Atlanta is probably going to want rebuilding PIECES from Kovi. Patty is a SINGLE piece. An Awesome piece no doubt, but a single piece nonetheless. And he’s not old, but he’s not young either. Atlanta is probably going to want more mileage out of whoever they get for Kovi.

Again, I like it in principle. I wonder if Wilson isn’t thinking the same sort of thing. Time will tell.

VERY interesting food for thought though.

With all due respect to Atlanta and its fans, Kovalchuk is one of the few highlights for the team. Unless he definitively says that he will not sign with Atlanta once free agency comes (and he hasn’t said anything of the sort), the Thrashers will not trade their one big draw and risk losing fans. If its a package of several cheap up-and-comers, I could see it. But Marleau? He’s more of a complimentary piece; granted, one that is a legit first liner and can carry his team, but he’s not a flashy draw. The Thrashers need that flashy draw that they get with Kovalchuk.

Oh, and in regards to Mitchell and Staubitz – since they were qualified by the Sharks, they get an automatic raise as dictated by the CBA. I don’t have the exact numbers for either of them, but I believe Mitchell has to get a minimum of $780K. Not sure about Staubitz, since I’m getting conflicting reports on his salary.

Check NHL numbers for salary info...

And the QO is a 5% raise on that salary (for players making under $1MM.

So Staubitz should make 498K, or 500K to make numbers easy, if he accepts the QO.

Man, Staubitz’s name looks funny whilst buzzed.

I think players under $650K get 10% raises. But its really all semantics when you consider that he’s pretty much going to be signed to a contract under $600K.

Okay, now I’m all confused. I’m pretty sure that players under $660K get 10% raises, under $1M get 5% raises, and over $1M get no raises. At least, that’s what this says, but I can’t find anything official (about qualifying offers or anything salary related) to back it up.

I was under the impression that was the case as well:

(A) if the Player’s prior year’s Paragraph 1 NHL Salary is less than or equal to $660,000 for that League Year, 110% of the prior year’s Paragraph 1 NHL Salary.

(B) if the Player’s prior year’s Paragraph 1 NHL Salary is greater than $660,000, but less than $1,000,000 for that League Year, 105% of his prior year’s Paragraph 1 NHL Salary, but in no event to exceed $1,000,000.

© if the Player’s prior year’s Paragraph 1 NHL Salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000 for that League year, 100% of the prior year’s Paragraph 1 NHL Salary.

Here we are....

Was trying to find a link because that came off the actual CBA. Per NHL.com:

How will qualifying offers work?

Players earning $660,000 or less will be entitled to qualifying offers (QO) at 110% of their prior year’s salary; players earning more than $660,000 and up to $1 million will be entitled to QOs at 105% of prior year’s salary; players earning more than $1 million will be entitled to QO at 100% of their prior year’s salary.

Mitchell made 715K last year; five percent of 715000 is 35750, which would bring his minimum salary up to 750750. Considering he only has one full year of NHL experience under his belt it is highly likely that he would be offered the minimum.

1st of all, which fans? Cause some may call for it doesn’t mean they speak for ALL of us.

I'd also add not all of us would love to see Heatly here to that list.

At least not after what he pulled on the Sens and not to mention the capache he’d be causing for us in a season.

I’m not sure if you saw it but Patty did tell the Merc that he would give up the “C” if asked, so there must be pressure coming from somewhere, if not within the organization than from outside. And come on “2ndly, if those fans wanted to jump off a cliff, would the rest of the fans follow? I think not.”

A large reason Atlanta signed Nik Antropov for that exorbitant deal was because he is a good friend of Kovalchuk- whether or not he signs is another matter of course, but they’d probably move him at the deadline if he doesn’t agree to an extension.

I’d pull the trigger on it*, but there’s absolutely no way they move Kovy for Patty. That’d be the most lopsided deal in NHL history.

*I’d also pull the trigger on the Heatley deal if he had the same price tag as Marleau and hadn’t been such a brat this offseason, but it’s pretty irrelevant at this point.

With all due respect, the additions of Pavel Kubina and Nik Antropov are not going to turn the Atlanta Thrashers into a winning team. If they finish higher than Tampa Bay next year I would be surprised.

Who wants a mustache ride?

by DRKinder on Jul 23, 2009 1:20 AM PDT up reply actions

I didn’t say they would be a playoff team.

The reason Atlanta management gave Antropov more than market value is because he is a good friend of Kovalchuk. They’re hoping to use it as a bargaining chip. I’m not saying that he is going to re-sign because of it, but it is a sign to me that they are extremely dedicated to keeping him around. He’s the face of the franchise.

And in response to them dealing Kovalchuk at the deadline, Wilson has said several times that he has until the deadline to set his roster. Also seeing as this would be essentially a wash on the cap hit they could theoreaticlly make this deal any time before the deadline.

Who wants a mustache ride?

by DRKinder on Jul 23, 2009 1:23 AM PDT up reply actions

I understand that- what I’m saying is that Atlanta would not make this deal. It has nothing to do with San Jose’s salary cap or Wilson’s desire to move Marleau for Kovalchuck.

San Jose doesn’t hold the cards here. Atlanta does.

Sorry, this is the last time I will reply to your comment.

If you look at the deal that sent Leopold and a third rounder to the Panthers for Bowmeester, you would consider that a very lopsided deal on paper, except for the context which surrounded it. Florida knew that they had no chance of resigning J-Bo, while at the same time they could resign Leopold. If the deadline rolls around and Atlanta is fourth in their division they may consider trading someone who isn’t coming back for somebody who just might.

Who wants a mustache ride?

by DRKinder on Jul 23, 2009 1:39 AM PDT up reply actions

If Atlanta moves Kovalchuk, they’re going to be looking for prospects and young players under contract with high upside. I don’t see any reason why they would only receive a player whose contract is expiring, especially if they’re out of contention like you stated. At that point they won’t be able to negotiate with Marleau until the season ends, and run the risk of losing Kovy for absolutely zero. There’s nothing that leads me to believe Patty would be interested in re-upping with Atlanta and not testing the free agent market, considering he has no ties to the organization and just had a child in San Jose.

If Kovalchuk is on the block at the deadline, the asking price is going to be more than a player (Marleau) who is essentially a “rental”- Atlanta will be able to do much better than that. Maybe a package of Michalek, Couture, and a 1st or 2nd get it done.

The Hossa deal seems like a much more applicable situation to me, considering it occurred at the deadline and involved the Atlanta Thrashers.

And here I was thinking this was going to be some awesome satire...

Seriously though, sounds pretty doable until point 6. I just don’t think Kovalchuk is that keen on leaving just yet and I doubt Patty would want to go to Atlanta anyway.

I like the proposals, up until the Patty deal.

First of all, Patty is an EXTREMELY underrated playoff performer, and has a lot of experience (as well as more hat-tricks in the playoffs than the regular season). Kovalchuk has made it to the playoffs once, in which his team was swept. Second of all, if we want to sign Seto and Pavs next year, I doubt we could sign Kovy as well, and Patty would be more likely to take a hometown discount. I like the other deals, however, I am just not sure Mitchell could play on the Wing.

by SharksFanEst.1994 on Jul 22, 2009 9:59 PM PDT reply actions

One more thing.

As previously stated by others, he wants to return and the Thrashers want to win and get back to the playoffs again.

by SharksFanEst.1994 on Jul 22, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

While he might indeed say he wants to come back, don’t you think he would be signing a contract extension right about now if he were truly committed to the Thrashers? Waddell can offer him 8 million plus per year, with all the cap room in Atlanta, and that is fair market value. Besides, Ilya is saying the right thing. If he comes off as a diva he hurts his earning potential by possibly scaring off suitors in the offseason. It makes sense for Heatley to demand a trade, he already has the enormous contract.

Who wants a mustache ride?

by DRKinder on Jul 23, 2009 1:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I think he's waiting to see what the Thrashers do.

And Heatly went about demanding a trade all wrong. He has every right to demand one, but you go to the GM behind closed doors to do it, not the media. If he hadn’t done that and backed the Sens into a bargaining corner, he’d probably be set to play somewhere else already.

True.

I think the moves of Kubina and Antropov, as stated above, were made to make sure Ilya stays in Atlanta. I have to disagree with most, however, as I feel with those moves as well as some of their younger guys (a la Evander Kane) they could challenge for a playoff spot. Maybe not this year, but certainly next year if Kovalchuk re-ups.
