Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

2nd OT SUMMER THREAD

We need a new OFF TOPIC summer thread. There's so much to talk about that isn't hockey, even though it feels like there's nothing. I rolled a natural 20 on initiative and decided to make my own thread, mostly because I need a place to chat and I don't currently have one. I'm certain others feel the same. Normally I'd let the admins create one, but I'm bored. Honesty, right?

Star-divide

Anyway, aside from baseball, I am wondering what else people watch to pass the time between summer and hockey season. Myself, I prefer Deadliest Catch, now over, and SYTYCD. Sure, it's not world events, but it's something to discuss.

Michael Vic to the 49ners anyone? That was a hot topic on the radio today.

Popsicles or ice cream, which is better?

Sand. Good, or get;s everywhere. (don't turn into emo Anakin)

Summer vacations. Do you take them?

Hypnotoad?

Just some potential topics. Post whatever. We'll* make more. It won't taste like Doritos, though. (if it did, it'd taste like cool ranch)

*we, in this case, refers only to Gray and the voices in her head.

is Evan getting Sonya just a cruel twist of produced fate? We already can guess he won’t beat Brandon, so why are they punishing the poor kid?

Popsicles and ice cream both have their merits. Usually, I’d say ice cream, but I’m craving a popsicle really bad right now, so I’m gonna have to say its a draw.

In MN and WI, we didn’t call them by their name because there were other manufacturers. I always refered to them as “freezie pops”. Still do, actually.

neat

I have always just called the Otter Pops, because that’s the brand and all I saw as a kid. Off brand otter pops need not apply.

Ah Lollies,

Kids love them, parents shudder at the thought of being asked for the hundredth time if a kid can have one.

As a life time addict of all things frozen I could never choose between ice cream and otter pops. Although saying that, if the choice was between ice cream and a Grape Otter Pop, I would stab the Grape otter pop.

In Britain we have nothing Grape Flavoured! That should be a rule. Here is a picture I took when I was horrified at the number of Grape Otter Pops that made it into my fun pack:

Truly Horrifying.

Also, we call Otter Pops, Tip Tops.

Oh yeah, the other answers

I watch the Mentalist, Royal Pains, the Listener (boo it got canceled), reruns of Bones and Chuck, and random youtube videos of Whose Line.

I don’t care about football (yet), but Vick killed dogs so I hate him and don’t want him to be employed.

Sand is fun if you don’t care about the clothes you’re wearing. Not so much if its your nice pair of jeans.

Usually during the summer I go to San Diego for two weeks (best family reunion ever – 26 people, condo complex right on the beach, and lots of cousins my age), Disneyland, and/or some long road trip around the western US. This year we aren’t because of some family issues, so we’re doing the whole “staycation” thing (Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Great America, Giants game, etc.).

Deadliest Catch, The Closer, Burn Notice and Eureka round out my summer TV watching. And the occasional A’s game.

I have a feeling it’s going to take more than Mike Vick to make the Niners not suck this season. Even if it were preprison Vick. At least one of the teams I follow doesn’t depress me for most of the season.

Ice cream, easy.

Sand is good when exposed to extremely high temperatures and pressures. It’s better when it’s one solid mass.

Any BSGers been watching SyFy?

That new show Warehouse 13 is pretty alright, kinda like a fun non-scary X-Files. Also, Royal Pains is a great show. USA sure does have some great characters.

Who’s this Vick character and what sport does he play? I used to follow football when I was growing up, but these days I’d rather watch prison and jail inmates do stupid things. That way there’s no speculation as to where they’ll end up and whether they’ll get to play again (I deal with prison populations in my work/research).

Not a big fan of ice cream or popsicles, but give me a large bag of M&M’s and I’ll eat until I’ve spoiled my appetite.

I like sand if I’m at the beach in my shorts, not as much when I get home and it’s everywhere.

Ha, vacation. I’m currently on an unpaid vacation of indeterminate length (unemployment). I did go back to California a couple weeks ago to visit some colleges with my younger brother. Went to Disneyland and Magic Mountain, which were both pretty awesome.

Would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? I agree, the name is lame and it seems like they’re doing it for the fame, but they should quit the game and adjust their aim and return to what they do best like B-rated horror movies in the Old West and shows about rag-tag fleets on a quest and create some more characters with a little zest. Rhymes aside, it’s a good show, regardless of what name the network uses.

WHOA

I DID NOT see Evan moving on to the finale! I figured Ade was a shoe in, along with Janine, Kayla, and Brandon. I like Evan, but I think Ade is the better dancer. Welcome to the wonderful world of phone voting.

I actually like Evan

I’ll come right out and say that my ladyfriend is a dancer and that’s why I watch the show. I will also say that I don’t watch the guys dance as much as the women, mostly because if I wanted to see rock hard abs and giant pecs I would look in the mirror…

I think Jeanine goes all the way. The judges are waaaaay too hot on her.

her AND Kayla

I mean, I don’t think Kayla has gotten a bad crit all season. She’s good, don’t get me wrong, but they have a hard core crush on her. More than the crush they had on Katee last season.

I like Evan, I do. I just think Ade/Brandon would have been a better final two guys. But i also didn’t vote, so, there you go.

I was flabbergasted

The therapist in me is still trying to figure out the “how the frak is Evan in the frakking finale?” – Was middle America afraid to have two African American males in the finale two years in a row? Or are there a lot of people out there who don’t fit the mold of “typical American Beauty” so they’ll vote for someone who’s a little odd over talent and looks? I know, I know – I’m thinking too hard again….

PS – Although I think harming animals in any way is horrible, I do think that Vick is being scapegoated – there have been man other football players who’ve done worse and have been barely punished (I’m talking to you, Mr. Ray Lewis)

by AfroPuff on Jul 31, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I didn't watch the guys too much

but from what I saw Evan seemed very friendly and relatable. Personality has a lot to do with the results of these shows, especially when fan voting is involved. I also have a feeling that the show’s audience demographic is more to blame than America’s timidity to have two African American dancers two years in a row.

Speaking of silly reality-talent shows, I don’t watch American Idol, but apparently one of the finalists came out and basically said the show is rigged and everyone gets Mickey Mouse “slavetracts” to quote the guy. Interesting stuff if it’s true, but the guy is preparing to self-release a new album (publicity anyone?).

by Chicago Shark on Aug 1, 2009 8:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Evan does have a shy, nice guy personality

and that showed a lot brighter than Ade’s personality did.

We makes the mistake of judging based on skill because we’re not 13 year old girls. ;) I mean, Brandon has a fantastic body, but I’m not voting for him just because he looks like a Greek statue. (plus, I don’t think he likes girls)

by CTGray on Aug 1, 2009 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions

13 year old girls are pretty crazy.

And I admit, I do like Evan a lot more than Ade (his pick started to bug me after a while, if that doesn’t sound completely shallow), but I think Ade was a more powerful dancer. But this show does have a personality aspect, which is partially why Benji won (man, season two was amazing). Also, Evan’s dance style is unique, which helps him – another reason why Benji won. I mean, it gets kind of old watching contemporary dancer after contemporary dancer do their thing.

ooh this is cool

taken from this article on digg

Another demonstration of the brain’s ability to extract meaning from distorted signals is a form of synthesised speech called sine-wave speech. When you first hear a sentence in sine-wave speech it sounds alien and unintelligible, somewhat reminiscent of whistling or birdsong. But if you listen to the same sentence in normal speech and then return to the sine-wave version, it suddenly snaps into auditory focus. Try as you might, you cannot “unhear” the words that you didn’t even realise were words the first time you heard them
( www.lifesci.sussex.ac.uk/home/Chris_Darwin/SWS).

The first time you do this is pretty cool. After that you can start to hear word like patterns in the beeps and bloops, but most of it is unintelligible until you listen to the sentence in normal speech.

Chrysler sucks

My mom has a Town and Country. Its about 8 years old, and here are the things wrong with it:
-Power doors. They don’t work anymore. And it costs $2K per door to fix.
-One door no longer locks.
-The A/C has been replaced around 6 times.
-The heated seats were recalled because they sometimes started catching on fire.
-The gear shift tends to get stuck.
-The key sometimes gets stuck in the slot.
-Two seatbelts are broken.

Because of this, my family has vowed to never buy Chrysler again.

So does Jeep

My family has had two Jeeps (made by Chrysler) and they both sucked. Had to replace both transmissions, same problems with the power doors, power window motors would break, had some problems with the exhaust manifolds, etc.

I agree with the Honda line, I had a 91 Accord that I drove in high school that is apparently still around at home. It’s almost 300,000 miles and on its deathbed, but it was a great car.

by Chicago Shark on Aug 1, 2009 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

The Chrysler era ones have had problems.

My mom’s 05 Grand Cherokee had a bad part and the dealers wouldn’t fix it. Although a friend of mine hasn’t had any trouble with his new Wrangler.

But if you can find an old one they’re damned good cars. Only trouble my 88 Cherokee’s ever given me has just been age related and nothing serious at that.

My family had a 94

Grand Cherokee Limited that caught on fire on the way to LA because the rear differential busted. The fire department left it to burn on the side of the 5 so that insurance would cover it, but apparently they don’t cover “mechanical” failures.

I’m sure it’s like anything else. I have a PC that runs Vista, and I’ve never had any problems with it being slow, crashing, getting viruses or any other problems that PCs are supposedly always succumbing to. Sometimes you just get a good unit, both with automobiles and computers.

Is the "World's funniest joke"...

really that funny?

A couple of Mississippi hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy’s voice comes back on the line. He says: “OK, now what?”

I've told this one a few times myself!
A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: “That’s the ugliest baby that I’ve ever seen. Ugh!” The woman goes to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: “The driver just insulted me!” The man says: “You go right up there and tell him off – go ahead, I’ll hold your monkey for you.”

not exactly a one-hit wonder

Have U Seen Her hit #4 and Pray hit #2 – I think it’s one of those things that has dated to the point of us no longer realizing how huge it was.

what do you consider Outkast?

by a10dency2ask on Aug 7, 2009 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess. I mean, the album was released before I was born, so its hard for me to really judge it besides the enduring hits.

And I consider Outkast to be pop/hip-hop. I guess a lot of people combine hip-hop and rap together into one genre, but to me, there’s a whole world of difference between 50 Cent and the Black Eyed Peas.

well my understanding is

Rap is rapping as in rhythmic rhyming or whatever. Hip hop is the music and lifestyle. So they are pretty similar, and usually involve one another. Outkast rap, so I think it’s fair to call them rap music. Your other labels apply also.

There is a difference between the artists you mentioned, but there’s an equal difference between any two “Rock” (Alternative? if that means anything…) groups, say… Nickleback and The White Stripes. Genres are pretty broad – almost meaningless at times

by a10dency2ask on Aug 8, 2009 12:04 AM PDT up reply actions

I always think of rap being a lot of spoken versus with a chorus. Hip-hop has some speaking, but most of it requires the ability to sing. I guess I think of it being hard-core pop, if that makes any sense.

And isn’t Nickleback rock and the White Stripes alternative? I mean, I consider there to be a discernible difference between rock and alternative music. I can’t explain it, but there’s just a divide between those two genres. Just like there’s a divide between hip-hop and rap.

I mean these things usually have a technical definition, apart from what we perceive them to be in daily usage. And ms jackson or b.o.b. aren’t songs with a lot of spoken verses and a chorus?

How about then the White Stripes vs Radiohead? I’m just saying that things don’t usually have to be that similar to be classified under the same umbrella.

“Pop” itself is pretty ambiguous, considering how tastes change over time. The audience being targeted in 10 years ago is pretty different than today’s. I just find it all very frustrating to classify these things

by a10dency2ask on Aug 8, 2009 12:28 AM PDT up reply actions

I guess I’m using the colloquial definitions of the terms more than their technical ones. Like, I listen to a song or a group, and I just automatically sort it based on what I think it is.

And I have to agree that “pop” is pretty ambiguous, just like every other genre out there. But if you look at it era by era, its pretty clear cut. Whatever it is, its usually catchy, has a popular beat (i.e. using background music that is similar to everything that’s popular in that time period), and does not involve the artist playing any instruments besides an acoustic guitar or piano.

don't disagree

but then again, aren’t the Beatles & Beach Boys pop? Or ABBA and the Bee Gees?

by a10dency2ask on Aug 8, 2009 1:15 AM PDT up reply actions

The Beatles and Beach Boys get into that pop-rock area, where its not pure pop, but not pure rock either. And then ABBA and the Bee Gees fall under the tambourine rule, where any band with a tambourine in the 70s is automatically pop.

True. But that was 70s pop, which is decidedly different from even 80s pop or 60s pop. The 70s were just weird.

very good point, I never thought of it that way

by a10dency2ask on Aug 8, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

two random things Id like to throw into the discussion

first, is how the definition of the “rhythm and blues”. I always found it interesting that originally rhythm and blues was exactly as it was defined, blues with a rhythm section playing behind it. In fact, rhythm and blues meant exactly the same thing as rock and I think it came first as how they described the new budding music genre (some DJ in cleveland coined the term rock and roll I think, also the same DJ to dedicate a whole show to the new black music), both were the same thing. Nowadays however, we have “R & B” which I guess sort of fits the loose definition somewhat, but is a completely and totally different thing. This in a way sort of validates what you guys are talking about with how bad genres classify things.

second, above I saw mentioned how people use the terms “rap” and “hip-hop”. I was always with mymclife on how she defined “hip-hop” as being a better classification of less-popular rap, but over the years I’ve come to realize that both actually mean pretty much the same thing. This is why I changed my definition to the more excepted description: “underground rap” (for example, blackalicious, who is from the bay-area. This type of rap, by the way, is fastly becoming my new favorite type of music, as I feel it is much more artistic compared to “ringtone rap” as I like to call it. not to take away from that stuff however, because a lot of it has a large amount of energy and Ive always felt that music with energy is always a good thing, no matter the genre.

by sharks on Aug 8, 2009 11:40 PM PDT up reply actions

edit:

blackalicious is not from the bay area, I thought he was but looked it up and apparently am not smart enough to delete things after I fact check them. The emcee for that group however is frickin amazing, and probably one of the best rappers I’ve ever heard, its a shame they aren’t more popular.

by sharks on Aug 8, 2009 11:43 PM PDT up reply actions

good point on R & B. Same point can be made for the difference between Rock ‘n’ Roll (Chuck Berry, etc.) and Rock (ACDC, Aerosmith?) and Contemp Rock (Whatever is on the radio?).

Apparently wikipedia has it separated into “R & B” and “Contemporary R&B” with the former running only throuhg the 50s and 60s

by ang6666 on Aug 11, 2009 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh yeah. The Reds game where Lincecum was pitching.

That game sucked because it wasn’t that bad until the last two innings, when they had a bajillion errors and gave up 5 runs. And because they should win the Lincecum starts. And because they had as many errors as runs.

Tonight sucked because they only scored once, and it was against the Dodgers.

So I’d say the Reds game sucked a bit more, but this game still sucked.

although

I suppose I can explain the symbolism:
the crown represents various lies this guy told about himself, which he used to elevate his societal status.
the buildings are the City/ being trapped
the green stuff represents the valuable of others, both tangible and not
and his teeth are gross for several reasons, one of which involves him being a gross dude. The others may or may not involve pirates and a reference to the British dental system. (one of his lies was that he was a subject of the Her Majesty, the Queen)

And that represents more symbolism than I think I have used in any piece previous to this one. heh.

I wanted the canvas to be at a weird angle because the situation was so odd, I didn’t think having it the usual way would do it justice. It just sort of added to the tension, in my mind.

The purple, actually, is just me painting him in this light purple sweater he wore the day I met him. I didn’t like it.

Dr. Phil?

Okay, but really. Did you get it all squared away? Get your money and stuff back? Any permanent harm?

And the piece. I dig it.

Jon Casey fan since '84

by stufflife on Aug 11, 2009 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions

hahaha, of the three I’d probably only go with Montel. I’m not sure what that says about me, other than I watched a lot of summer day time tv in the 90s.

Waiting to here on some potential money back for two charges, the rest is gone. It’s MOSTLY squared away, though he is still at large. My case will not be investigated further.

BUT, the main thing is, and we told ourselves this the day shiz went down, everyone is alive, no one was physically harmed and nothing we lost was irreplaceable. The monetary loss is annoying, but it won’t matter 10 years from now. I firmly stand by both those assessments. It’s been downright exhausting to deal with though.
It felt good to make a painting about it.

Probably to try it out, see what’s improved. IE8 is much more secure than previous editions, plus it has the sandboxing security feature quite awhile before Chrome did.

I’m a Firefox 3.5 + ABP user but if one doesn’t mind ads, IE is a decent alternative.

Weird things

Sandoval hit by pitch (second Giants batter to be hit today), he starts to take a walk and yells at the pitcher, taking a step towards him. The benches cleared, Russel Martin tries to take down Sandoval, and madness ensues. Turns out nobody was ejected, and the pitch was ruled a strike.

Oh, and there’s more, but I’m not quite sure how to describe it. Bat-shit crazy, maybe? Worst umps ever? I don’t know. Just that, Dodgers suck.

I’ve counted around 6 or 7 BLATANT missed calls by the umps that go against the Giants this series. The Giants are on their third “manager” in this game. It feels like the umps fixed the series for the Dodgers, its that bad.

Honestly, I’m swearing up a storm right now. Its just crazy over at McC.

Okay – check that. This series? Try this game. And then add on another 5 or so missed calls that benefit the Dodgers from the other games.

And I really, really want Brian Wilson to bean Casey Blake right now. I don’t care if it gets him tossed, it needs to happen.

WOW

I’m glad I can’t watch Giants games out here after seeing that. If ESPN has a feature on it, and the calls were THAT blatant, then the league should sit these guys down and have a chat. I didn’t watch the game, but it didn’t look like Bochy or Wotus were even arguing that heatedly to warrant ejections.

Watching that probably would have been the final straw on a frustrating summer so far, and I think I would have thrown my 70 pound TV as far as I could (not very far, admittedly, but far enough to regret doing it).

by Chicago Shark on Aug 12, 2009 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

It was absolutely horrible. I hope those umps are fined and issue a public apology to the Giants. Hell, I hope that they get fired. There was not one call that went in the Giants’ favor.

And while I didn’t throw anything at my TV, it certainly didn’t mean I wasn’t tempted to. I just couldn’t find anything to throw.

Normally when an ump makes a bad call I just say to myself, “they’re human”. BUT 5-6 bad calls… that’s (inhumane?) terrible! I guess this is justifiable because it was against the Giants. (JK)

Question ...

Does anyone know if there is a cell phone (with Verizon) that can get NHL Online on it ? My phone is back from 2002 (yeah, I’m definitely not one of those that needs the latest and greatest) and figured the only benefit for upgrading my phone is if I could watch the Sharks on it. So yes? no? Thx!

I think Verizon is the official provider of cell stuff for the NHL

I dont think you’ll be able to watch full games though. Definitely highlights. I saw enough adds for that during the playoffs.

You’ll need a web phone:

Because that would take up a shit load of bandwidth to offer to everyone. It may be available, I just think that if it was, there would be some major fanfare by the NHL. Also I would have seen people at the tank tuning in to pick up the classic Randy and Drew commentary which I havent seen yet.

Entertainment in the summer: Watch the Giants (McCovey Chronicles is pretty awesome too.) I’ve learned a crap load (at least by my standards) about sabermetrics in the process of reading and trying to understand the comments on MCC. wOBA is pretty awesome. Sadly, it only further shows the utter ineptitude of the Giants lineup.

I watch a lot of TV as well.
Stuff I’ve watched (and/or watching) regularly: Burn Notice, Leverage, Dark Blue, Better Off Ted, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Psych.

(Popsicles or ice cream, which is better?)
Ice cream is definitely better than a popsicle. That stuff is crap. It’s not even real fruit juice.

THAT'S GENIUS!

Deep fried maple bars with bacon? I need one. Now.

are any county fairs still going on?

you could probably find one there. And if not, you could bring your own and convince someone to fry them for you.

agree to disagree

as someone who works with ‘psychos’ and ‘retards,’ I’ve seen how much these names can hurt – I think people with mental illnesses and cognitive disabilites have enough things to worry about. Not sure I’d be first in line to get food at the “Unemployed Mulatto Bagel Shop” (not sure why I chose bagels – pretty sure there’s something that rolls off the tongue better)

Okay – I’m off my high horse now.

I know it IS an problem

I just don’t think you’re going to solve it by going after a donut shop. If anything, it lessens your cause because it makes it seem shallow. Actively trying to educate people about differences in cognitive function and the myriad of challenges metal disorders can bring, (and that there is northing “wrong” or shameful about having one), is a better way to go, imo.

I agree

that the word “psycho” can be offensive but I don’ think naming the donuts “psycho” should be offensive. Here’s the donut shops explanation of this.

Okay

I went there today. The donuts were amazing (I feel strongly about donuts). I ate the “Smoreo” donut:

I thought it would be overly sweet but it wasn’t. Best donut ever!

Oh and sorry for hijacking this thread with donuts…

Watching the news as I eat lunch

and they mentioned Michael Jackson’s doctor. It reminded me of a discussion in CPR class yesterday. How does a doc not know that CPR will not work on a soft surface like a bed? Panic and insanity of the moment? I mean, it’s not going to be a calm place when you have to do CPR. They even make it as distracting as they can when they test you to hammer this fact home.
Make me wonder how I’d react if presented with the same situation. Do I remember to move the person in distress to the floor? I hope so.

Thoughts?

First sumi-e attempt. Almost with I’d gone with the 60in tall canvas instead of the 45in that this is on.

Awesome!

I did that style in the one art class I took in high school and it was my favorite. Very relaxing and abstract enough that when my bamboo turned out awful it almost still looked like it was supposed to.

gotta love those "happy accidents"

no, really, they’re called that. I had that happen a lot when I was learning to paint. I’d paint terrible flowers, but somehow they’d come out close enough that they looked alright in the end.

Next time I think I’ll make sure to keep the heavier ink spots wet. I didn’t do the washes quickly enough because I was debating how to do them, and so it didn’t blend as much as I would have liked. But it was fun!

it was awesome

A very well written and paced, if thinly veiled allegory that should be nominated for many things, imo. And I swear, I don’t cry at movies, but if certain things had happened differently I was going to be temporarily emotionally devastated*. The film is really quite engrossing.

*this may because, as was suggested to me, I am a girl. But I like to think of myself as a atypical girl. So maybe I wouldn’t have cried or anything, but I would have sworn at the screen and made sure the whole theatre heard me.

Things I could use right now:

A shower, dinner, and a beer.

Sadly, none of those thing seems to be willing to make themselves readily available without some effort on my part. It’s been a long day.

Girls drink beer?

Kidding. I have a feeling that Tuesday will be one of those days. Prepping for an interview all weekend, interview Tuesday afternoon, then go to orientation for my grad school to explain to the new kids what it takes to successfully graduate. Should be a long, draining day, hopefully capped with a cold one.
