Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Free Agency Thread Until October

Fans looking for an immediate transaction to shake up the Sharks roster will have to acknowledge that there is a long time left before the first puck is dropped on 2009-10.

Plus, having some flexibility under the NHL’s financial constraints could allow the Sharks to find some hidden gems if other clubs run into problems with the salary cap.

-sjsharks.com

If we need to dump salary, then how do opposing teams with salary cap problems help us out? Neither team can take a net salary gain in a deal. I understand it's the PR department writing these pieces, but still.

Mearghhhh.

Go Sharks.

make Damphousse ten years younger and sign him to a cheap contract since he would be so grateful that we made him young again that he wouldn’t want a multi-million dollar contract :DDD

But there are also teams that are looking for pieces that the Sharks can/should trade to free up space. It may take a few separate moves, but I still think it’s too early to put cap issues ahead of personnel issues.

That blurb puts things into perspective

DW still has a lot of time to work his magic. I would think he’s waiting for the fervor to die down over the next couple days, maybe even weeks, and once GMs find their heads and start thinking more clearly I would look for him to start doing his job. That said, it is a little worrying thinking about the possibility of diminished returns for our players just because other GMs think they can stick it to us because of the cap situation. I for one am waiting patiently for the wheeling and dealing to start. It’s like the first day of grammar school: can’t wait to get there and see who the new kids are (and if any of them are hot).

Sources tell TSN the NHL and the NHLPA are investigating what might have been an enormous mistake by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago tendered qualifying offers to several key players this week, including Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer, however the investigation underway is to determiner whether the qualifying offers were filed correctly.

If not, there is the remote possibility the qualifying offers could be ruled invalid and the players listed above, conceivably, could be deemed unrestricted free agents because of the blunder.

On one hand, it makes me laugh seeing Brian Campbell act as a large part of the problem. On the other hand, I don’t want any fan going through the stomach-wrenching uncertainty that we’re going through, especially fans whose team finally regained respectability after a long period of Bill Wirtz-induced pain.

I doubt it – an ELC would cost around the same amount that Greiss would make, so DW just needs to plan around that $800K for the backup. I think (and hope) that DW is waiting for other GMs to recognize needs that can’t be satisfied through free agency, and then offering up players for trade for those needs, hopefully getting picks, prospects, and cheap third/fourth liners in return.

Exactly- salary wise The Monster and Greiss are going to be roughly the same give or take 50 G’s or whatever, which doesn’t have any bearing on the salary cap picture at large.

It may have a bearing on whether or not Greiss is re-signed, but even then I doubt it. He was the starter for Worcester last year, and unless he gets an offer sheet (which is also doubtful) that would return some draft picks, then I don’t see DW letting him go. We can flip him for something else down the road if Gustavsson signs and plays well.

The Ottawa Senators are still in the hunt for Mike Comrie.

Comrie isn’t expected to sign with an NHL club until next week, but his price tag is believed to be in the $2 million per season range. Comrie scored 10 goals and registered 17 assists in 62 games between the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators last season.

If the Ottawa Senators or Dany Heatley want to revive the trade talks with Edmonton, they’ll have to make the first move.

Although Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini is still interested in acquiring Heatley, it looks like he plans to wait and see what Heatley and the Senators do next.

“There’s not a lot to say at the point,” said Tambellini. “It will be up to Bryan and Dany as to what steps they want to take.”

Edmonton offered Dustin Penner, Ladislav Smid and Andrew Cogliano in exchange for Dany Heatley and Ottawa accepted the deal; however, Heatley rejected the deal, hoping that the Senators might instead trade him to a different team. Since then, Ottawa has been forced to pay Heatley a $4 million bonus and they want more in any potential trade as compensation. Ottawa says that their original deal with Edmonton is off the table.

MEarghhhh, you gotta get on that Gray!

I’m planning on falling asleep at 8 oclock after waiting all day for the second straight year of DW Fourth of July fireworks. By the way, send me a text or “tweet” if the Sharks make any moves. I’ve enabled CT on Twitter for mobile updates.

Side note, I think I’m going to send a fake tweet out saying Patty and Boyle got traded hahaha.

Dude, you've seen me

I start now I won’t make it to dark! You’re skinny too, but you have more weight on you, and your male. I’m just not a pro.

I’ll keep you apprised, but odds are the only tweets I’ll be pumping out today will be my own brand of snark.

I will so RT your fake tweet if you do that….

That may be for the best

Plank has been known to get a little excited by people’s pictures. ;)

Hey man, I don’t bite. Shoot me a friend request and we can trade messages about how much we hate the friends we have in common.

Some random thoughts.........

First What IS IT WITH TEAMS AND CRUSHING MY HOPES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn’t matter the sport, if their my favorite team…….. they go out of their way to crush my hopes. The Earthquakes score an own goal in F***IN STOPPAGE TIME TO DRAW WITH REAL SALT LAKE!!!!!!!!!!!! This is why sports is the only thing that bring pessimism out of me, otherwise, Aliens could be invading our planet, but I’d still be saying “what a great day it is”
I swear this is going to turn me into a mad scientist. I already ideas on how to make Yellowstone erupt, the ultimate doomsday scenario…………… I really should take sports less seriously.

Now that I have vented, I have been getting a little caught up on our recent draftees, and I must say………… I think I might develop a man crush on William Wren. Well, maybe that’s a bit much. But from what I’ve seen and read about him, in 6 or 7 years he might develop into a Dan Boyle Dion Phaneuf hybrid. My expectactions might be a bit lofty, obviously its too early to tell. But the kid impresses. I think if everything goes right for him, he may develop in the best defenseman in the NHL.

I think San Jose will be fine. If Doyle can bring in more players like Huckerby, we might have another second half surge. The loss of Ronnie O’Brien hurt us big time.

by SpalWizzall on Jul 4, 2009 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe, but they've been pretty bad

I personally think Cannon is way past it, and that’s not helping things

by a10dency2ask on Jul 4, 2009 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Well I guess to Cannon’s defense, he hasn’t had a decent back four. With Garcia gone and Hernandez being hurt, these makeshift backlines aren’t cutting it.

by SpalWizzall on Jul 4, 2009 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions

i guess i just

am so annoyed by how bad his distribution is and how long he takes with the stupid ball

by a10dency2ask on Jul 4, 2009 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Whatever. Jeff Garcia is gay. And I’m not sure anyone named Ronnie O’Brien is going to help us next season (at least according to Wikipedia):

I have the solution to our financial situation!!!!!!!!!!!

One of our big name money players needs to get injured (heck, why just one?) and stay injured for opening day, then be healthy again in a month. That way, under the rules, his salary is cut from the Sharks’ total cap. WOOOOOO!!!!! Its genius!!!!

I'm going to guess that lack of news today

is due to large number of folks recovering from their own stupidity. I already turned in the payment for mine.

I’m posting this in the hopes that it spawns news of a deal or three. Go league go!
