Conclusions from a 4th of July Weekend

There are two sides to blogging.

On the one hand, there's the money, the endless supply of women, the recreational drug use, binge drinking, all night parties, stardom and the devoted readership of millions. Love it.

On the other hand, however, is something many bloggers don't realize until they are knee deep in rosterbation and salary cap figures only a few days after the season has ended. Blogging takes some fun out of being a fan.

Before I covered the Sharks, did I lose sleep over the team's salary cap issues? Did I curse Doug Wilson for not being more proactive? Did I research hundreds of prospects in the draft so that I could criticize the Sharks' scouts?Well, no.

I'm not going to lie, I've been in a pretty crappy mood lately. I've been pissed at the Sharks' complacency, worried about the cap, and flat out astonished by the lack of, well, anything so far this offseason. Then the Huskins signing happened, and I kinda went off the deep end.

So I disconnected. On Friday morning at 3:30 AM, I packed up the car and headed due north to my favorite place on the planet: Lake Tahoe. After a few days on the water with family and friends, I felt refreshed. I was a calmer man.

That was, however, before I was stuck in traffic for nine hours coming back. Traffic is my least favorite thing in the entire world. Terrible.

Let's just say that I had plenty of time to think things over. I did talk to Plank on Saturday, so I already had some new ideas floating around in my head. I came to four conclusions, all of which I will share with you... now.

  1. Doug Wilson is playing the waiting game: When Wilson came out and told fans that there would be changes, everyone expected them right away... myself included. Not including McGinn, there are only eight forwards on the current roster. Although we knew that Clowe would probably sign, many of us thought that the four remaining forward spots would be filled with top-tier free agents. That's not the case. Currently, there is merely $1.77 MM left on the cap to fill the roster. Ouchies. While we can all get mad at Doug for his lack of moves, I'm starting to see what he's doing. Instead of selling low at the draft or cashing in at the trade deadline, he's sitting on his hands. That doesn't mean that a big trade isn't coming, he's just waiting for the right moment. After the free agent frenzy dies down, teams will have some time to look at the roster they have assembled. Many may believe that they now have a chance to compete, or even contend if one more piece is added. (Plank has an article coming, which will cover just that) That's when Doug Wilson will re-open the dealership and boast his "Like New" Jonathan Cheechoo and "Only used by an old lady who drove it to Church" Milan Michalek. Perhaps a stylish German model (Ehrhoff), would be attractive. He might even dangle some Marleau, but the luxury models inside the dealership always cost more. Point is, everyone knows he's trying to make moves right now. By waiting, he's maximizing the value he can get in return.
  2. Three of Cheechoo, Michalek, Lukowich, Ehrhoff, Murray, Marleau, Shelley and Nabokov will be moved: Between these eight players, over $26 MM of cap space is committed. Not all of these players will be moved, but at least three (possibly more, if Shelley is one) will have to be shipped in order to field a competitive team next year. I'm not talking competitive as in being able to compete for a playoff spot, but competitive as in being able to field a legal NHL roster. I don't know which of the players will be moved, but something is coming.
  3. The Sharks top prospects (Couture, Petrecki) will have a shot of making the team out of training camp: Perhaps the reason that Wilson hasn't gone out and signed multiple players is because he believes that our farm system has some players who are ready to see regular time at the NHL level.
  4. The 2010 NHL Draft will be much busier for the Sharks: When salary is dumped, something has to come back. It's usually draft picks. Four of the eight players above would probably return you a first round pick, which is vital for a team who's farm system looks like three M&M's in a jar full of rice. (Ok, so maybe that analogy doesn't make sense to you, but it does to me, so meh.)

All in all, you might have been thinking those same things, and we've touched on many of them already. However, I'm putting my thoughts down on digital paper so that I can just get them out there. I'm not happy with the direction of the Sharks roster so far this season, but that could all change in about a second. News will come, and I'm going to do my best to just sit back and chill. I'm going to try to remember how fun it is to be a fan, and not take anything that happens over this offseaon personally.

If anything else like the Huskins deal happens, though, well... that might be the point of no return for me.

Nicely done, TCY.

One question though: Does anyone know what is going on with Moen? I have not heard ANYTHING about whether we will re-sign him or not.

I’m not happy with the direction of the Sharks roster so far this season, but that could all change in about a second.

ditto, and I might very well be unhappier depending on the players you listed who end up going!!!

Making room

“Three of Cheechoo, Michalek, Lukowich, Ehrhoff, Murray, Marleau, Shelley and Nabokov will be moved:”

Would Alex Kovalev be considered too much of a baby to add to this roster if room were made? He’s one hell of a sniper and apparently Montreal isn’t interested in having him back. Would that make anyone happy?

I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that.

Pretty much anyone joining the roster will make a lot of people happy. Pretty much anyone leaving the roster will make a lot of people sad/mad. We need some positive balance on whatever deals are made.

I know exactly how you feel...

I’ve been feeling the same way. Mostly frusteration, but a little anger as well. It’s like, come on DW, don’t you see we have issues? Resolve them already! So, this weekend I went and got hammered, repeatedly, and didn’t really care about anything Sharks related (well, anything not rum related, actually). I am now back at work (where I do most of my FTF reading), hungover like a mf-er, and am not really as anxious as I was. At least we know something HAS to happen. And if we know it, everyone else does too. Maybe he’s being smart by waiting…

I'm sorry

To both the icky traffic and the whole freaking out about the team thing. Both really, really suck.

I’ve been feeling the same way, until two days ago when I had an epiphany that no matter what, there will be a team iced next year. The Sharks will still be in existence, and while there may be some different players on it, it still will likely be a contending team and be the most awesome in the NHL (just because its the Sharks). I mean, its so completely obvious, but lately I’ve been feeling like if DW doesn’t make moves, there won’t be enough players, and because of the cap there never will be enough players, and so on and so forth. So I’m feeling pretty zen about this.

That said, if Marleau, Pavelski, or Mitchell is traded (why hasn’t DW signed Mitchell yet??), I think I’m gonna have to choke a bitch.

The ball’s in Mitchell’s court, right? We offered him however much as an RFA and it’s up to him to sign it, or find another offer from another team which the Sharks can match?

by Quid Pro Clowe on Jul 6, 2009 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The QO is only to retain his rights as an RFA, so if he does get signed away the Sharks get compensation, or the chance to match any offer sheet.

Right now, he’s probably trying to get a deal more than what the CBA dictates as qualifying offers for RFAs (which is 5% more than his current salary – something like $765K), and a multi-year one at that.

re: Mitchell. I assume you’re talking about next offseason, but just in case… once an RFA is signed, he cannot be traded for a year.

I thought maybe Mitchell’s rights were still able to be traded, which is why I included them on the list (since he hasn’t signed yet).

Of course, if I’m wrong, happy days!

It's interesting to see how different bloggers find different stresses in the job

When it comes to roster moves, my emotions can run the gamut, but I try not to let them take me to crazy land. The fact of the matter is, I will watch this team next season regardless of the moves DW does or doesn’t make, and I have no control over what he does, so I chose not to worry about it. I do slip from time to time, but I try to remember that I’m following this team for my entertainment, even if they do frustrate the hell out of me on occasion.

I’m going to games next year, no matter who is on the ice.

By the way, I went in with my neighbor and should be attending 12-14 games throughout the season. I’ll let you know where the seats are exactly when I see some. I think they are in the last row of 215.

Since we’re all doling out life lessons here, this weekend I learned that having a roman candle fight in front of your house is all well and good until your buddy hits your other buddys girlfriend in the back of the head.

As for the Sharks, yeah it sucks not to have any news, but that’s the way it is this time of year. It’s a bit different because of the cap situation (I think this is the first time we’ve been in trouble in that regard), but it’s not like we haven’t been here before in terms of the deathly slow news crawl.

If anything it gives you some time to whip up the third installment of The Prongernator :)

Oh, and the roman candle thing sounds like a good lesson to learn. I learned once that you shouldnt use an acetalyne-oxygen mix in a potato cannon…its not a 4th of July lesson, but there was a huge explosion in my arms…

Finally, unless the Sharks come out of the blue and sign me (which probably isn’t likely as I’ve never even put on a pair of ice skates) that their news or lack of news doesn’t affect me too much. So, best not to trip…especially in July!

Moderation is honestly your best bet. I usually don’t drink stupidly, but the few times I have, I’ve felt it later. Know your limits, and pace yourself. Oh, and something else preventative that I’ve learned this weekend? Put on sunscreen before going to Great America, especially when your skin resembles Casper the Friendly Ghost. After or during just doesn’t do squat.

Not entirely true

I drank water before I hit the sack for exactly this reason. But I already had a headache, and felt like hell when I woke up.

I’ve also seen someone drink several bottles of water in an effort to ward off the effects of a wee too much and then seen them promptly puke it all back up, and still end up with a nasty hangover the next morning.

if Kris Versteeg becomes a UFA

I think he’d be a great fit on the 3rd line with Mitchell and McGinn. Not the biggest body, but he’s quick, young, produces offensively and will use the body in a similar way to Mitchell and McGinn. He wouldn’t break the bank either, although he will demand a solid contract, but adding him to that 3rd line would give us three legit lines again and if we move a few veteran contracts, we can fill in the 4th line with some AHLers. Frazer McLaren is a big body, tough as nails, and developed a scoring touch at the end of Worcester’s season last year – I could see him and Staubitz on the wings with JR in the middle. We also have center Steve Zalewski who has the makings to be a solid 3rd/4th liner.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Jul 6, 2009 6:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Versteeg would be a beaut. I’m not sure I would be enamored with rolling out both Mitchell and Versteeg on the third line (not a lot of physical pop, even if their wee little hearts are willing), but you could definitely slate him somewhere.

I’m not too familiar with the Worcester kids, but the rundown of McLaren sounds like something I’d be interested in. Does he wear a yellow visor? Please tell me he wears a yellow visor.

Frazer McLaren – he and the rest of the third line (DaSilva and some other guy I’m forgetting) pretty much carried the WorSharks into the playoffs when the rest of the team slumped big-time. He was originally a borderline AHL player – too good for the ECHL, but would be a healthy scratch/fourth liner in the AHL. He worked his ass off and was eventually able to land a permanent roster spot on the third line, including regular time on both the PK and the PP. The PP time was largely because he was the guy that always stood in front of the net, screening the goalie and putting away rebounds. So, Holmstrum-like. He’s very physical and not afraid of dropping the gloves. He’s one of the guys that I hope DW is looking at hard to make the big club next year.

Unfortunately, he does not wear a yellow visor :(

In all seriousness though, he sounds promising. I knew he played well during the Calder Cup playoffs and saw him score a goal when they played a Woostah game on NHL Network towards the end of the regular season, but other than that have no idea about the young guns (besides the guys who are likely hitting the big time like Couture, Petrecki etc.)

Cheechoo and Michalek?

No way we get anything for these guys. The rest of the GM’s aren’t stupid. These guys have no upside what so ever.

I think we are going to have to move Marleau or Nabby, just waiting on what the “Monster” does.

by syc on Jul 6, 2009 6:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I disagree… A LOT

(I’ll just keep it very brief)
Some people want Cheechoo and let me remind everybody Milan is only 24.

Not to mention

Milan’s speed, good hands and recently discovered defensive/pk prowess

by Chicago Shark on Jul 6, 2009 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha, yeah, Milan has a ton of upside.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Jul 6, 2009 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uhh, a 25-year-old winger that already averages around 55 points a season and is continually improving defensively has an upside. A pretty significant one, too.

As for Cheechoo, while he’ll never reach that 56 goal mark again, he was a pretty consistent 20-30 goal scorer every other year (this year with the line of stone hands is the exception). There’s your upside.

Oh, and Gustavsson will not be the starter right when he comes to the NHL. That would be stupid; he’s never played on an NHL ice surface and has never played in an NHL game, which is decidedly more physical than the European leagues.

Wha-wha-whaaaa.

Also, signing The Monster really has no bearing on what the team does in terms of skaters. The cap hit for Greiss and Gustavsson would be nearly the same.

Seriously

Gainey, Sather, Tallon, Lawton, and Hull are the stupid ones I can name off the top of my head. I’m sure there are plenty more.

Scratch Hull

He’s been fired. Dallas now has Niewendyk. I suppose if Joey doesn’t work out, they can hire the Eagle. He’s already got some experience negotiating (ie offering the police a million dollars to let him go).

My trivial revelations

I really hope the Sharks keep Douglas Murray (and to a lesser extent Milan Michalek), despite the cap issue and the need to trim the payroll. I was searching for Monster news on Aftonbladet, and decided to see if there were any updates regarding Murray. I came across an older article with a few notables quotes from Crankshaft.

Tre Kronor-favorite Douglas Murray looks to the future: Olympics is a dream

After being bounced in the first round by Anaheim: “People on the team are still hiding and it is really nothing you want to talk about. We are one of five teams in history who have won President’s Trophy and then cod directly in the first round of finals. And there is obviously no fun.” – - – If it’s a consolation to witness Anaheim pressing Detroit: “Nah. We knew they were good. What makes the most evil is the way we lost. There was no desperation or like the person must have in a finals. There were too many passengers on the team. It was for DOMESTICITY.

(Hurrah for literal translation courtesy of Google)
So I hope DW has the cojones to get rid of the passengers, whomever they may be. (and I suppose Cranky could be just as guilty, as I believe only Boyle gets a clear pass). In the article, he also goes on to praise Michalek, stating: ”He is an incredibly powerful guy. He is rough speed from standstill to top speed. Furthermore, it is a true power package. It is not fun to be back when he comes to full roll. There is a guy who Tre Kronor may look out for (in the World Championship games)."

I seriously need to get a (yellow) Murray Tres Kronor sweater

Not until I clicked those links!

Hmm, “Seto” translates to, “the place where the river runs quickly.”

But the Setoguchi Station info made me lol:

Setoguchi Station, imfamous for its common break downs and drunken hooliganism is world famous for its celebrity “platform pizza” walk of shame.

Other sites include Japan’s largest transvetite brothel and a statue commemorating its founder, Shin “ike-man” Setoguchi.

anyways, shutup tcy you’re giggling, anyways, im going to buy corey perry’s hockey reference page and sponsor it. what should the quote be? i’ve got a couple ideas:

- “Rob Blake would have snapped his spine if he had one.” (doubt that is going to fly)
- “High sticking both on and off the ice” (once again, probably not going to fly)

obviously i need some help.

also, i found a picture that’s probably already been posted here, but whatevs:

if i could just post that it would be perfect. maybe just the url? that’s actually not a bad idea.

And hmmm, I might want to sleep on it for a while, but here are a few that come to mind right away:

“Goalie-seeking missile since 2009.”
“Only a girl some of the time.”
“You know in America this is called ‘a crybaby’ and [Corey Perry] is exactly that. – Evgeni Nabokov”

But yeah, I have body doubles all over the place. So far, the government has tried to kill me (unsucessfully) 42 times.

I should probably start putting that in the body double job description.
