Is it mean...
to hope he has a terrible career?
by idunno723 on Jul 7, 2009 7:35 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I doubt he’ll be lights out this season as most are predicting- something tells me the transition to the NHL is more complicated than just showing up with your highlight reel*.
*Although it may pay off dividends for Toronto- something tells me this Wilson character they have running the ship is familiar with platooning goalies and getting favorable results.
As for hoping his career is terrible? Can’t hurt, I guess. Karma is just selfishness on layaway.

*Seriously though, they might be playoff material this year if they get a top six forward.

Like I’ve said before (you listening over there!), Greiss and Gustavsson would make nearly the same amount of coin next season. It doesn’t really change anything in San Jose’s cap picture with him going to Toronto.
Sure there may be a move today or whatever, but I don’t think it will be due to this.

…damn, you missed it. Its not like The Monster wouldda gotten any PT behind Nabby anyways.
Now DW can start making moves, right? He was just waiting on The Monster’s decision…right? RIGHT??!?!?!?!!??!

Not surprised
Toronto was giving the hard sell. For all we know the kid could have some connections up there that made the decision easier. The Leafs also only have Vesa in goal at the moment, and he was hurt at the end of the season. Gustavsson may have the best chance of getting starts in Toronto that he does anywhere else, given that situation.
The Leafs page is weird, btw. A heart complete with all the veins and arteries, floating off into the ether of teh interwebs. My first thought when I think of the Leafs is always the left ventricle.

Eh, no big loss
Gotta give the prospects we already have in our system a real chance anyways. If worse comes to worse, we can sign or trade for a vet back up at some point during the season. ESPN has the Sharks as a possibly destination for Martin Biron, but I don’t think it makes much sense. If we wanted a veteran back up, we would’ve kept Boucher.

I had a dream last night that he signed with Columbus, so I was already pretty well prepared to accept that he wasn’t going to sign here.
That, and the fact that we have great goalie prospects coming out of our ears, and we never get highly sought-after free agents to sign in San Jose no matter what, I’m not too torn up about it.
Oh, and now that Greiss is guaranteed to be the backup this year, we only have one AHL goalie signed in Stalock. So, now the question is: will Dakers be re-signed despite not getting a QO, or will the Sharks bring up Sexsmith from juniors?

To be fair, I also dreamed that I had magic and had to flee the apocalypse-ridden country in a plane, only to get sidetracked by a game of hockey in an elevator. Oh, and then my english teacher made us write an essay on Gustavsson, which was when I found out about him going to Columbus.
My dreams are generally really weird.

I'd be surprised now if we didn't bring Dakers back
Stalock will be playing his rookie season next year and Dakers provides experience which gives us a nice tandem. Rushing Sexsmith up and leaving Worcester with two rookie goalies seems like it’d burden both the team and their individual development.

Its considered tampering, that he stated his intentions to pursue the Sedin twins before the free agency period officially started. GMs and coaches are not allowed to contact any players on other teams before the free agency period starts on July 1, nor are they allowed to make their intentions of pursuing them known. The time before free agency is supposed to give an advantage to the player’s current team, and Wilson inadvertently telling the twins that they were wanted in Toronto before the free agency period started destroys that advantage.

No NHL Track Record
As much as I would’ve liked to have seen him sign with the Sharks, he has no track record in the NHL, and as we’ve all seen on numerous occasions in every professional league, it doesn’t always translate.

"Jonas made a decision and he chose the Toronto Maple Leafs." Resnick said, confirming what was reported earlier today on two Canadian web sites. "It was a very tough decision. As Jonas said, he’d wake up in the morning and be an Avalanche, then after lunch he’d be a Shark and at dinner, a Leaf. That went on for a long time."
This guy sounds like an absolute beast. First a roaring avalanche! Then a vicious shark! Then a… leaf?

is very upset that DW isn’t more active like Burke. Like they have some interesting accusations that his attitude toward Gustavsson (not doing anything WRONG, but not actively courting him) is analagous to his attitude toward winning a cup…not sure I agree, but it’s an interesting point in a way

WTC’s comments section has always been just awful. I mean, if nothing happens immediately, DW doesn’t care. If he doesn’t get a specific person the Sharks were courting, then DW didn’t try hard enough, and therefore doesn’t care about winning (because Gustavsson would have 100% won us a cup by himself). If we were to sign every big free agent, people would whine that DW isn’t being fair to our current players. There’s no winning with some people. Some people just want to always complain.
FTF has its fatalistic moments (hey, we all get frusterated). But for the most part the people here are pretty level headed and smart enough to hold legit convos.
Its best to just ignore the WTC comments and only read DP’s posts.

The thing is, Burke is a GM of a non-playoff team with lots of cap space located in the free agent magnet that is Toronto, and has a fanbase that just wants change from mediocrity. Any change for the Leafs is good, as long as they don’t trade away Luke Schenn.
Wilson, on the other hand, is GM of a team that is a constant contender with no cap space, located in a place where 39-year-old Rob Blake is the biggest name free agent to come in a long time, and the fanbase wants to win the Cup, nothing less. He doesn’t have a lot of room to be active, and the team he already has is filled with young, highly-skilled players.
The reality of the situation is that Wilson doesn’t have the same amount of maneuverability that Burke does; the respective situations of the two teams are almost polar opposites. People who compare Wilson to Burke, saying that Wilson doesn’t want to win because he’s not making all the big moves, are being short-sighted and are of the “grass is greener” sort.

I agree
I bet every single one of the “whiners” at WTC were applauding all of the acquisitions DW has made from Guerin all the way to Moen at the time. DW has a way of being the “Ninja” GM (stealthy and unseen) and getting the talent that is perceived we need at the time in a fashion that is consistent and business-like. “Hot heads” (like at WTC) fail to recognize this and lose faith oh so quickly. Quite sad if you ask me.

I know some of them have been Debbie Downers pretty much every time they post, which begs the question of why they are even fans if all they want to do is complain. But, yeah, some of them are quite bipolar and reactionary.
I personally like Wilson’s calm approach. Yeah, sometimes it bugs the hell out of me (like now, when all the Sharks have done is let go of a few players and re-sign three), but the team has consistently improved their point total ever since the lockout (let’s just ignore the post-season, shall we? lol). That’s a good thing, I don’t care what anybody says.
