If I Were Doug Wilson...
For the people here that don't know me well, I have been playing competitive ice hockey since I was 5 years old. During two of the 14 years I have been playing I was lucky enough to play with Charlie Wilson, Doug's youngest son, so as a result know the Wilson family very well. My point being, knowing Doug on a personal level and as the GM of the sharks, is he never seems to disappoint. He turned the team around when he ripped off Boston to get Joe and has been a pretty good GM since. So I am going to side with TCY on this one, he might be waiting it out. Might is a key word because all the valued UFAs seem to be vanishing off the list to other teams, The Monster being the latest(Toronto). But here is what I would do if I were Doug Wilson.
First off, Marleau(6.3), Michalek(4.3), Cheechoo(3.0), Erhoff(3.1), Murray(2.5), Lukowich(1.75), Shelley(.725), and Nabokov(5.4) Cap hits combined is a whopping 26.9 million and the Sharks currently have something like 1.22 Mill. left I believe(please correct me if I am wrong). Thats a whole crapload of cap space. Now assuming that Dany Heatly is still on the block(and yes, I know this is a longshot) I would gladly give up Cheechoo, Michalek, and any one of Murray, Erhoff or Lukowich for Dany Heatly. Lets be honest the guy is good and he will shine with a center like JoeT and the sharks could really really REALLY use two one hundred point scorers. Giving away those three players is over 8.4 Mill at least no matter which of the three D-men we give up(8.4 being the lowest). Best case scenario would be to deal that awesome defensive D-man we all love, Christian Erhoff at a relatively large 3 mill. dollar cap hit. This would actually relieve us of 10.5 million (I don't know what Ottawa's cap hit is and if it will allow this) while bringing in Dany Heatly's 7.25 million dollar cap hit. This would give us gives about 4.5 million left on our cap, giving us enough room to sign mitchell(which has to happen). But we also gave up two foward spots and got back only one meaning a few players from the minors would have to come up and join the team...Here are my foward lines. Left, Center, Right.
- Heatly Thornton Setoguchi
- Marleau Pavelski Clowe
- McGinn Couture Mitchell
- Shelley Roenick Staubitz
The fourth line is assuming of course, that JR returns for another final campaign and we pay him well under 1 mill. Now, that is a pretty solid lineup, good 1st two line, the third line has a lot of potential and that checking line would be able to compete well enough.
Now, best circumstances would have been to unload Nabby's contract for a second rounder at least probably a first and sign the monster and give him the shot of a lifetime to carry a team and live up to expectations. But, since he has already signed with Toronto this can no longer happen because I don't trust Greiss and I doubt any of you do either so Nabby stays obviously. this leaves us with about 3.8 mill. left on the cap if we sign Roenick(which of course, depends on his cap hit). Meaning in the 3.8 we have to sign Staubitz in order to fill my foward lines up which will happen I am assuming and sign Griess for our backup(which may have already happened?). Defense is pretty well taken care of. Here are my six, not in any order
- Boyle Vlasic
- Blake (any one of above three)
- (any one of above three) Huskins, Joslin, Semenov, whoever maybe a third line D. Whatever
Ok. Not a bad defensive corps either. Can definitely compete with all the top D pairs in the league and since most of our D-men are signed we don't have to worry about Cap room.
If Doug were to do this it pretty much takes care of cap issues, especially if he were to deal someone like Erhoff in the Heatly deal I mentioned earlier, which I think would have to happen in order to bring up McGinn and Couture permanently. Otherwise we are still screwed.
Go Sharks!

Nice peice
I would do a Michalek(4.3), Cheechoo(3.0), Erhoff(3.1) for Heatly trade.
I voted Erhoff as he is not consistent enough on both sides of the ice.

sucks. Haha. And i think it would have to be that deal otherwise we would not have enough room to sign/bring up the necessary players.
Gotta remember too, that bringing up minor league guys counts against the cap. (i.e. McGinn will run about $1MM) But I like the lines and would fully support this team next season. I didn’t run the numbers myself, but it looks like it would work.

that why i think erhoff would have to be the D-man to go. otherwise wouldnt work. I tried to work in the average salary for the minor guys to.

Sounds Good But..
That sounds like a wonderful scenario, which would improve both teams. However, Ottawa is already $2+mil over the cap. So, the only way that Heatley gets traded is if the Sens can dump some cap space as well. To swing a deal like this would HAVE to involve another team with plenty of cap room, which there are plenty (21 teams with $5+mil cap space, 10 with $10+mil per Nhlscap). That said, Murry needs to get Heatley off the books, and Wilson has a track record of pulling a rabbit out of his hat from time to time.
Welcome welcome.

maybe we could swing a three way deal
PREPAREDNESS_Because those goddamn zombies aren’t going to kill themselves
I’ve flip flopped on this a lot over the course of this offseason. Initially, Heatley attracted me. 50-50 guy playing with Thornton? Holy shit, yes please. Then the notoriously buddy buddy media in Ottawa started picking him apart. He denied a trade to Edmonton and tied Murray’s hands. It’s the second time he’s wanted out of a city, and although the situation in Atlanta was obviously a little different, there are some parallels.
The cap concerns me too. Even if we don’t give up Marleau in the deal, Heatley’s $7.5 M hit is going to make it all but a certainty that either Patty, Pavs, Nabokov or Gooch walks next season- no way we afford all of them. In my eyes, it means San Jose is going for broke next year and then trying to retool on the fly a la Anaheim. With Blake walking, that opens up a big hole in our defensive core, and I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the blueline you have in place for this season.
Of course, there’s always a plus side. Heatley, like you mentioned, is a 100 point guy. Although his character issues have been torn apart by the media, Steve Yzerman thinks they aren’t a big enough issue to warrant leaving him out of Canada’s Olympic tryouts. Then again, two weeks is a whole different situation when compared to five years and another trade request.
All in all, I don’t think the baggage is worth it. Intriguing idea though.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
fair points
The D would be the weakest point of the team which doesn’t end good 99% of the time (i.e. Washington Capitals this year). But i think having Heatly would still be good for SJ in the long run. Yes his attitude is bad but he wants a trade and Edmonton wasn’t on his list which is probably why he said no sir to the trade. Maybe playing for a good team would cheer him and straighten him out. Plus a 50 goal scorer with Joe again would be nice. Of course this will never happen and the sharks issues still stand, but I felt it was a decent way out.

No Moves!
It looks like DW hasn’t made any moves because he is finding out that other teams won’t pay market value for players who have failed time and again in the playoffs..Teams don’t want players with this playoff baggage, at the market price..
We are stuck with players with no trade clauses, overinflated comtracts, and horrible playoff records..

I don't think that's accurate
in markets like Atlanta, I’m not sure how much the GM/fans care about playoff performers, I think theyr’e more concerned with big names that will get people to cmoe to games and possibly get the team to the playoffs in the first place. I"m pretty sure DW is just sitting on his hands like he does every year. Or maybe he decided there doesn’t need to be any big changes, at least not right now
I think they have to have some concern for playoff performance.
Winning does fill the seats. Usually better than a big name will. Winning in the playoffs helps even more, but not always.

Are you all ready for more of the same?? Do you think they will get better having another year together??
Can they learn from past failures??
Lack of moves?
Let’s wait and see what happens before passing judgement shall we? The roster for 09-10 won’t get put together for months, I wouldn’t expect it to come together in the first week of free agency. It’s not like San Jose has a very good track record of attracting UFAs or the cap space to do so this year if they wanted to.
Trades will be coming. Unless the Sharks are going to try something completely radical and only roll 3 lines and no backup netminder. Give it time. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

This teams has lost to lower seeded teams now for years..They won the presidents trophy by having 47 near record games, then a .500 record for the last 35 games and first round loser to a lower seeded team..I admit they were the best for 47 games, and where the hell did that get them?
So what do you blame the constant losing to lower seeded teams in the playoffs, Marcello?? Mystical bullshit, what is that

You’re also not taking into account that the eighth seed we ran into was probably one of the best eighth seeds of all-time. They took Detroit to 7 games in a series where one bounce made all the difference in the world, and the only team that was able to better that effort was Pittsburgh.
As for last year, Dallas was also a better team than their position in the standings. I seem to remember a whole bunch of pundits predicting them to win the West this year, pre-implosion. Hell, most pundits had them winning the Pacific last year, before the Sharks had that whole “we are physically unable to lose in March” thing going on. Plus, that quadruple OT game wasn’t exactly the Sharks bending over, either.
And before that? The Sharks were the lower seed in most series. Okay, exceptions were series like the WCF, or when Edmonton went on that run to the Finals (even then, the Sharks were the fifth seed). The whole “top seed” thing hasn’t come about until recently.

I agree they were better than St. Louis or Nashville, but god so many years of excuses for losing, it just gets so old..Do any of you think this team as its constituted now, will ever take us anywhere but to the best the second round at best??
It’s hard to judge that when players still need to be moved in order to get under the salary cap. For example, Marleau, Cheechoo, Ehrhoff, Michalek, and Lukowich could all be playing in different sweaters next season.
Getting bent out of shape right now doesn’t serve any purpose, really- there’s still a variety of things that need to be done in order to field a legal NHL roster. I understand you’re frustrated with the postseason loss and lack of activity DW has had this offseason, but yelling about it isn’t going to get us anywhere.

This team, as of this moment, needs to sign at least five more players (including Mitchell and Grier) to even have a complete roster, so no, I don’t think so. But after a few trades to free up cap room (like Cheechoo, Michalek, and one of the defensemen) and acquiring some players to fill those empty spots, and yeah, I could see them going all the way.

Put yourself in DW’s shoes. What would you do? If I was DW I would try to field the best team as possible. And he did exactly that. It’s not his fault that the team under preforms.
DW got us into salary cap hell this season because he was going for broke since the team made it to the WCF’s. Ever since the lockout (and creation of the salary cap), the NHL is composed of teams who have “windows” to win the Cup. Wilson realized his window was now, so he went for broke.
It’s the nature of the league- you bomb, get some great draft picks who have cheap contracts, rise to prominence, compete for the Cup, and then rebuild.

You know, if we didn’t do the Boyle trade, we’d still be under the cap. I mean, he is the second-highest paid player on the team, and has the longest contract of the team.
So, how about it? Want to undo the Boyle trade, and get back Matt Carle? Yeah, didn’t think so.

The title says it all..I think its cool that you all have a lot of faith in DW and ownership to make the necessary changes to get us to the next level and if your right, I will be very happy to come back on there and eat some serious crow..I would like nothing better than that..
Interesting List
Someone who knows hockey well put a lot of thought into that list..I am old enough and lucky enough to seen those players perform..
But
If this teams goes south and finishes from fourth to sixth as I have predicted, then I will be back to tell you all that this is the unfortunate direction of this franchise..
I don’t think finishing from fourth to six is out of the question- I alluded to as much right here.
Going along with that though, does it even matter where they finish in the regular season? It appears to me that you don’t think that matters anyways…
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Mr. Plank
In a lot of ways you are exactly right..Did the Sharks use too much energy last year trying to finish first?? What did it get them??
Look where the Pens finished, I think fourth after they were tenth with 20 games to go..
Very good point Plank!!
Another Point
Now that there are zero expectations for the Sharks going in next year, and that they will probably finish back in the pack, maybe they will sneak up and people and do better..Who knows..
It’s hard to predict that though, ya know? In 2008 they had that ridiculous point streak during March (after sitting in the 5-6 hole all season) and proceeded to get their asses handed to them in game one against Calgary. First ten minutes, two goals or something of that sort. Took em’ seven games to close them out, and then they go down 3-0 to the Stars.
In that post I linked above, I think there was a discussion about what you mentioned- zero expectations going into the playoffs and the team playing above their heads because of it. Could be true for all we know, but that’s just speculation.
Maybe it helps, maybe it doesn’t- we’ll find out in a year.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Except that a fourth to sixth place finish is still making the playoffs, and isn’t your whole beef about their performance in the playoffs?
And I could totally see that sort of finish happening. There are lots of strong, young teams on the rise (Chicago, St. Louis, LA), and then of course there’s the whole Dallas being healthy and Avery-free thing. It will be harder to get points than the past two years, and so I seriously doubt that 117 points will be reached again.

Duly noted, but what’s your beef with Marleau then? That obviously shows he performs during the playoffs.
Maybe it’s the fact he isn’t vocal enough? Steve Yzerman, Sidney Crosby, Nik Lidstrom, Joe Sakic- not exactly fire and brimstone guys. All have Cups to their name. Jarome Iginla, one of the best Captains in the current NHL? Four straight first round exits.
I just don’t understand the Patty bashing, I guess. Yeah he hasn’t gotten the team over the hump, but from where I’m sitting it looks like he has done more than his part.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Patty
If he wasn’t the captain, I would love Marleau..I really like the way he plays, but he is way to quiet and shy to be a team leader and captain..I think that lack of vocal leadership and shyness has hurt the team..
Captains need to be fiery leaders in a physical and emotional game like hockey..They need to be able to call out players, can you imagine Patty doing that??
I understand where you’re coming from, but have to disagree. As mymclife stated below, Joe Sakic is being praised for being a guy that led by example on the ice. Looking at Marleau’s stats, he has more than filled that role.
If players need a Captain to get them to perform in a playoff game then that’s a huge issue, and one I’m sure DW is going to address this offseason.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Seriously
Just listen to all the accolades poured on Sakic today – that he was a quiet, unassuming guy that led by example. To me, that sounds a whole lot like Marleau, even if Marleau isn’t as skilled.
You need secondary scoring to go along with the primary players. Sure, Malkin had 36 points in 24 games in the playoffs, but it’d be Detroit with the Cup if Talbot didn’t score those two goals in Game 7. Marleau provides that primary scoring, pretty consistently as well. Its the other guys that need to step up a bit more.

Mr. Plank, I can’t tell you how freakin cool it was to go into the lockerrooms and get to know the players and really find out what hockey is all about..My pops and his partners sold out to Ralston Purina many years ago, but to be able to be around the hockey greats was an amazing experience..
Barclay Plager(if you remember him you are a hockey nut), was our captain for years and he was great..He was so intense and fiery that the other players followed his lead or he would jump on their ass, especially in the playoffs..
That smile that Joe Thornton had on his face when talking to reporters after game two of the Anaheim series, Plager would have personally knocked that smile off his face in a very necessary way..
Thats the kind of captain that this team needs..Maybe I am too old school, but that is how I saw captains take control of the team..
Heh, I’m way too young to remember Plager. My dad might, but I’m only 21 years old.
As for the Captaincy, I’m not really sure what this team needs. I’m of the opinion that since the collective we (fans) aren’t in the locker room, I don’t think we can really judge what the team needs in that sense.

You have been around the game for a long time and seem to know what you are talking about. I am only 19 and I completely agree with you. This team needs a captain like Iginla or Mike Richards. Those guys step it up on the ice and are vocal tough leaders. I think Dan Boyle should be the captain of this team. He was the only one that performed consistently throughout the series and he has been to the finals and won. Once Again
This is america where we are all entitled to our opinions without being told to shutup..Once again, what give you the right??? Just learn this lesson and its all worth it to me..
free speech gives me the right to say shut up
and if it really means that much to you. i’m sorry i let it come out the wrong way. it’s really not that big of a deal.

Look, I’ll let you guys figure this out.
From now on, no more “shut ups” and no more personal attacks. Both of those don’t fly.
If you disagree with someone, try to say something rational or just ignore the comment. Pull your britches up and move on.
I’m not going to be a nanny around here.

Wrong Again
Kid, you told me to shut up about the Sharks, what gives you that right?? America is about free speech I thought. You need to learn that lesson..

This argument is really stupid. If someone tells you to shut up over the internet are you really going to get offended?
seriously
everyone hear can tell me to shut up.

Well I’d prefer it if it wasn’t used- all that is going to do is turn this place into a wasteland.
I’m not saying we’re the most hockey knowledgable blog in the land or anything, but we do keep shit civil. Saying “shut up” isn’t going to help anything.
Neither is responding to it, however. Let’s just all bury the fucking hatchet because this is ridiculous.

At least this isn’t the only place that’s blowing up – Pollak sounds pretty pissed over at WTC as well.

Interesting List
Someone put a lot of thought into that list..I agree with most of it..I was lucky enough to see those guys play..That makes me old..LOL
I Wish For You All
MeThinksSports,
I wish you could have seen a lot of those guys play..I noticed that Ovechkin was the only current player on the list at three or four..That tells you all how fantastic he is..Everyone should watch Ovechkin play anytime that you can..What an awesome talent and he plays with such reckless abandon, amazing player..We should all enjoy him, even though he isn’t a Shark..
question
why do you think gretzky was left off the list? and i’ve never heard of 4-7.
