Analyzing the Sharks Defense
Interesting Puck Prospectus article on the Sharks defense. I can't say I strongly disagree with any of the conclusions, although I never really liked Blake all that much and I don't understand his conclusion on Semenov based on the numbers.

Good article. Yep, it certainly confirms how I feel about Errorhof being over paid.
I was surprised about the Dan Boyle findings. That goal in particular they highlighted should have been stopped by both Boyle and Nabby.
I’m with you about Semenov, but he did have a number of blunders this season. I cant say I completely understand all the math going on in the chart, but I think see what you are saying.

Me too, Morti
I’m thinking his evaluations of Semenov are based on his watching of the tape and not his stats analysis. I wonder how much of those “errors” were in the first half of the season, when he legitimately was awful. In the second half, I recall him being much more responsible and effective (though still not top 4 Dman quality). Luko I do recall being pretty bad.
The big thing that stuck out with me was his statement that Ehrhoff contributes nothing offensively. Then I realized nearly 60% of his points came on the power play. If I’m DW, Ehrhoff is the #1 guy I’m looking to trade. He has the potential of a #2 Dman but the production of a #6, all while being paid as a #3.
Trading Vlasic would be a HUGE mistake. Despite all the rumors, I bet trading him has never even crossed DW’s mind.

staubitz?
Why did they include staubitz in this article?

Staubitz was a converted D-man to the forward position. I’m pretty sure he didn’t play as a D-man with the Sharks this season (unless my memory sucks). I think Puck Prospectus might have left Staubitz as a D-man in their stat data base thingy.

He didn’t play D with the big Sharks, but he did play defense in a few of the WorSharks games, including in the playoffs.

He’s a converted defenseman. On behindthenet.ca, they have him listed as a D.
