WTC: Marleau stripped of Captaincy
Its official: Marleau is no longer captain of the Sharks. Along with that, Thornton no longer has the "A".
McLellan says that the letters will be given to whoever steps it up and earns them during training camp - so it might end up being Marleau again, but probably not, as the front office/coaching staff wanted a change.

WHAT THE?!!!!
I am clearly qualified to make the decision on who should be captain and it should be Patrick Marleau!

WOAH
crazy. well at least there’s news! I wonder if this will increase or decrease the rumours on the marleau trade
Honestly, I think it increases
I think what may be more telling is the fact that Marleau wasn’t even present at the practice.
I don’t mind him losing the C, but I do mind him not being here next season.
If he goes, the Sharks better be getting a helluva package back.
Oh my Goc!!!
IMO, any news about the Sharks will increase the Marleau rumors. Except for maybe a statement by DW saying that Marleau won’t be traded. Even then, I’m not so sure.

Well,
If a Marleau trade does occur, he will be captain and lead his team to a Stanley Cup.

Predictions?
Captain- Boyle
Assistant- Thornton
Assistant- Pavelski
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
That looks about right, although I would prefer that Marleau would get the A over Thornton.
I could also see this happening:
C – Thornton
A – Boyle
A – Pavelski
I don’t want it, but it does seem possible.

I’m not sure I see that happening. For some reason I get the feeling Coach Todd doesn’t think as highly of Thornton as the management – see last season’s icetime: Pavelski was getting the crunch time trust a lot more than JT

Pavelski is also a better defensive player than Thornton is, which might explain why.
But as DW said that he’ll help decide who gets the letters, I wouldn’t put it past him to make Thornton captain.

In Big Joe's defense
He knows how to work the refs. If the ref is only going to talk to one guy, and that guy is Joe, might not be a bad thing.
That said, yes, Pavs, kid’s a gamer and I would love to see him with the “C.”
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
yeah but that doesn’t really make up for his reputation as one of the laziest players. Overall I just don’t like how everything is handed to him on a silver platter, the whole team is built around him and he is default #1 no matter what he does
by a10dency2ask on Aug 17, 2009 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions
It can be frustrating
Playoffs aside (and that’s a very BIG aside), Joe is a star of the highest order. His numbers are silly, and players around him play better.
I still feel that such a large part of his game is drawing penalties, then cleaning up on the PP. That doesn’t happen as much in the playoffs, which hurts a player like him. The same has been said of “small” players, such as Paul Kariya.
Joe played with a bit of a meaner streak in his Boston Days. I wonder if that would be better for him. Part of his charm and the reason we like him so much IS that laid back attitude.
Again, I hope JR’s time in teal rubbed off on Joe in the sense of knowing when to be the fun-loving ham, and when to dial in and be a killer goal-scorer.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
everyone always calls for “angry joe” but we know we won’t see it. I say give the C to someone who earns it, not someone who is a star by default thanks to their skill

Joe doesn't want to be Cap'n, or so I have heard (admittedly awhile ago)
he was in Boston and we saw how well that worked. I think he does better without the additional pressure of the C.

How about Marleau with an A?
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Marleau get an A. I mean, he was the Capitan of this team for years for a reason, so giving him an A doesn’t seem like that far fetched of an idea. I could see Boyle getting a letter, although I’m not sure one year with the team is enough to jump him to the C…so probably the other A. In my mind, that leaves Thornton, Pavelski…and really no other true contenders for teh C. I think giving Pavs the C would be a good choice…He’s a hard worker, he plays with some good passion, and he is one of the younger kids that has a (hopefully) long future with this team. Not a bad choice to rally around.
Predictions:
Pavelski – C
Marleau – A
Boyle – A
Of course, I know nothing about the inner workings of the team and the lockerroom…so maybe there are others out there who aren’t as visible to us who are awesome leaders out there.
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

I think I like this
The ultimate goal for this team is the Stanley Cup. That is 9 or 10 VERY LONG MONTHS away. A shorter, more near term goal of earning a “C” or an “A” might be a good thing. I hope that whether he earns the “C” or not, this move helps Patty.
I know he had a bad year in Ron Wilson’s last year because of all the trade speculation, but honestly, don’t you want your captain to play THROUGH that adversity? I’m hoping this move lights the fire again under Patty and makes him the game changer we know him to be.

good thing this happened at the end of the day or this news would’ve ruined an entire day instead of just an evening.
I’ll wager $5 on Marleau picking it up again in training camp. Just to hedge my bets I’ll put another $5 on Boyle.
Oh well, I guess I’ll wear my #12 “C” jersey with that much more pride, now that it’s just a reminder of the glory days of Team Teal.
I think the C jersey should go to another...
…as I think Marleau can perform where we need him to perform without the added pressure that comes with the captain role. I love Patty, and think he should retire a Shark.
I’m not bothered by this news. Tho I would prefer it stay with Marleau, but enough people are being whiny little bitches, that who knows what will happen. (shrugs)

Definitely agree here. As has been my MO this entire offseason, I’m not sure we (the fans) really have a good idea of what constitutes a “Captain” for any specific team. It’s an issue that lies solely within the organization and locker room.
This is the reason I’m not too beat up over this- let the team decide. Like you said, leaders will be leaders.

Actually, this article was halfway-decent. Still has the uber-annoying “our beloved Los Tiburones,” and this line pisses me off:
If you are stunned or surprised, you must be either a pure Marleau enthusiast who doesn’t believe in consequences, or a pure baseball fan who doesn’t believe in hockey. But he’s fairly level-headed in his assessment in who should get the captaincy, and advocates that this news means that its less likely for Marleau to be traded (which makes me happy).
Although, the part where he calls Marleau’s personality “climate controlled” was a bit too much, even though he tried to make up for it by calling him a “beyond-decent human being.” Also, the mention of Dany Heatley did not win him points.

In general, it’s really hard to demote someone. You don’t see it happen all that often because usually the person leaves (either by their own choice or someone else’s).

Patty stays
We’re probably all jumping the gun (myself included).
All that’s been decided is Patty is not presumptive captain.
The Captaincy will be earned in Training Camp.
I rather think that this move implies Patty stays, because honestly, how do you trade a guy after you “strip him” of the Captaincy.
We’re all saying Patty has been demoted. All Todd said was “no one is our Captain right now” and “well decide in Training Camp.” None of this means Patty couldn’t be Captain on Opening Nights.
I think I still have hope that Patty takes this as motivation and has a season for the ages, leading us to the Cup.

So this news just recently hit Puck Daddy
and I was kinda blindsided by all the Sharks hate on there. I know I’ve heard others on here talk about it, but it was coming from all corners, not just habs1rule. I try to avoid the Sharks news on there because it’s usually second or third hand by the time it gets to Yahoo!, and I’ve usually heard it already. I have a feeling most of it is probably the anonymity of the Internets, but yikes, there are some unsupervised youth out there in need of spankings and time-outs! I really hope the rest of the league doesn’t see the team in the same way that this small sample of fans does (I use that term loosely) or I have lost respect for the fanbases of many other teams.
I’ll just chalk it up to jealousy about our relative success since the lockout, but it makes me sad that people actually hate us and our players and think we’re idiots.
Here’s a hint – if you don’t want to be pissed off, don’t read comments anywhere that is part of a larger, well-known conglomerate; ESPN, Yahoo, etc. They tend to bring out the uneducated 12-year-old fan, and have little to no moderation.
As for the Sharks hate? Chalk it up to a successful expansion team in California of all places that has all sorts of players fans of other teams want but can’t have. That, and playoff failure is pretty easy to make fun of. Nevermind that most of the fans insulting the Sharks are fans of teams that have even less recent playoff success.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
If it were me
I’d hold off making a decision on captain until well into the season, maybe after the All-Star Break. See who really steps up to lead the team. I don’t know if you can get the same evaluation just coming out of training camp.
My reasoning is after Nolan was traded, the rotating captaincy system was in place for awhile, which eventually led to Patty getting the C. However, it always felt to me that the captaincy was foisted upon him, not so much that he earned it or even wanted it. He might have been the most logical choice at that point, since the other candidates were leaning towards the end of their careers (Damphousse, Ricci), so better to leave it with the budding star. And at the time it got results (deepest push in the playoffs that year), but Patty was never going to be the vocal and assertive captain that they may have expected him to become. And at this point, it’s not really what the Sharks need.
Now that this news has gotten out, seems like all the major media outlets have put on their speculation caps to interpret what this’ll mean for his future in San Jose. In the end, I hope he remains a Shark (between the 2, I’d sooner trade Nabby). I hope he continues to lead San Jose on the ice (best player last season), just without the expectations of the C.
Oh my Goc!!!
sounds good but, doesn’t there need to be a captain or assistants to talk to the refs?
by a10dency2ask on Aug 18, 2009 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah i intentionally left that out
cuz at this point, there’s no alternates either. But isn’t the situation in Vancouver where Luongo is acknowledged as the C, but the A’s still take care of the ref duties? I don’t see why this can’t happen here. Heck, I bet they can probably rotate that role out there too if they really want to.
My point is, the next captain should really want the responsibility and take the reins. If I were to make an analogy, the next captain should probably be a general, someone who can rally the troops. Patty is just better suited to be a damn good soldier.
If you really want someone to just talk to the refs, just throw Thornton out there. He’s the most likely superstar benefit anyway.
Oh my Goc!!!
This is interesting
The more I talk to Joe Pavelski the more I think he needs to be the next Sharks captain. [link]
This is coming from a reporter at the US Olympic camp. IMO, this just reaffirms that Joe Pavelski is definitely a future captain of the Sharks. Also, it doesn’t hurt his chance at making Team USA.

Definitely sounds like Pavs wants the C.
At least that’s what I get from this. Hat tip to Kukla.

Wow
That doesn’t sound like Pavs to me at all.

that
changes my thoughts on his being too young. Maybe rotate around for a season, see how he and two others do?

i agree there's a risk of him being too young
but personally, I think one of the problems with the team has been the eagerness to defer to veterans in tough situations. Maybe this would combat that

that’s a good point. I hadn’t looked at it like that before. You may be on to something there.

Plus, Pavelski is the same age as Marleau when he became captain, so there is somewhat of a precedent set.
And on the topic of the article – Pavelski is definitely exuding that sort of captain-like quality, taking the blame as well as spreading it around. And just the way that he said things, like about how everyone wants the same thing, no matter how much time they have in the league, and about how you keep learning from the experiences in the league. I can see why Custance is in favor of him becoming captain; and with this interview, Pavs might have just become my leading candidate as well.
