I see you did a Scandinavia tour. Did you go to Vigelands park in Oslo, Norway to see all the statues? I especially remember the one called the “angry baby”. I think the sculptor was thinking of Chris Pronger, or, better yet, Patrick Kane. :-)
Didn't go to Vigelands...
But I did a blitz tour of Oslo, having decided upon my arrival that I was sick of cities, and that I wanted to see the fjords, etc. I did about 6 museums et al. in less than 24 hours, and then hightailed it out of there.

ah yes. I did the train ride to Flaam, and took the 4 hours cruise through the fjord to Bergen. Fun times! Was the old submarine still at Suomelinna?
Hahaha!
Did the Flam trip, spent the night in Voss, then went on to Bergen. The sub is indeed still at Suomenlinna – and I realized that I had never been in a sub before! First time for everything.

NPR kept me sane when I was commuting from San Ramon to San Leandro to San Jose and back. The lack of commercials and the slower pace were a big part of getting me into NPR. Also, random cool stuff rather than histrionics (which is a big part of sports talk).

I did listen to NPR during the election if a debate was going on and I had to be elsewhere, but I’m guess I’m not enough of a hipster to really get into it. heh. Nowdays I’m into just setting the ipod to shuffle or picking an album I like and listening to that.

Raley Field
is easily the best non-MLB ball park out there. I prefer to hang out in the Solon Club when I go to a game. That place is shaded, air conditioned, and has its own bar. I also once got a suite ticket from a friend that works for a local propane company. Oh man, words cannot describe how awesome that was. You ever end up in Nor Cal in the summer, make sure you go, the park is a gem and the cats are the best team in AAA.

Thoughs, Musings and General Craziness
I stayed in my car in the parking lot of Safeway to hear the whole thing. Things that stood out:
“Dan Boyle is a Junkyard Dog, a Hockey Rat, and Overachiever, etc. etc.”
That description blew me away. I think we’re all sold on him, but the particular portrait Doug Wilson paints of him is EXACTLY what has been missing from the Sharks since basically before the Joe Thorton trade.
This use to be a team of overachievers who played where they didn’t belong. I’m glad one of our best players is like that again.
“I think Danny Boyle and Robbie Blake were too respectful of the guys this past season.”
There is a CULTURE problem in the dressing room. I know we discussed how Joe is the face of this franchise and Patty is our leader. I love them both to death, but if Dan and Rob could not impress more of their style, there’s a problem. Too many guys are looking to Patty and Joe for direction (whether that is their fault is an entirely different matter).
If Patty is not traded this year, and there is no Cup next year, I really think management lets him walk.

It’s not like he’s going to be “responsible” for a playoff failure considering he’s not the captain. The only reason I’d let him walk is cap restraints or he has a really bad off-year.

I don’t know if I entirely blame Patty, “C” or no “C,” for our current run of playoff failure. But this is a business, and there are consequences. The team has other leaders that they are looking too. I think Management would let Patty walk for the same reason Ron Wilson is coaching in Toronto right now. Sometimes, someone has to take the “fall.”

I don’t lay it on Patty for the past four years anymore than I lay it on Ron Wilson, and Ron is still gone.
I don’t know that it’s particularly right or wrong. It’s the way it is. I’d be very sad to see him go, but my gut says this is what happens.

For a guy who’s "supposed" to be a leader, he’s just a guy. In which case, why NOT let him walk?
No he’s not supposed to be a leader because they stripped him of the Captaincy! If he is a leader, it’s not his fault because he’s not the primary leader aka the captain.

But there are still expectations of Patty. The “C” is a letter. I believe they still expect something from Patty. If they can’t get leadership in addition to scoring from Patty, I seriously believe Doug Wilson will let him walk and spend the money elsewhere, on something he believes will get him the Cup.
Again, I don’t WANT this to happen. This is my interpretation of Doug Wilson’s comments.

But why expect leadership from Marleau when he was just stripped of the captaincy? If the captaincy was just taken away, it probably means the Sharks aren’t looking for that type of thing.

Leadership vs. the "C"
Doug Wilson tried (I think) to seperate the two issues. There are three letters to be distributed among 22 players. He expects leadership in many forms from guys, regardless of the letter on their jersey.

By that, I mean he expects leadership and accountability from the team as a whole; of the team, by the team, for the team as it were.
I think he tried to underscore again that this team has to be responsible for itself. If Patty has anything other than a Hart Trophy year, my sense is, Doug Wilson says "We have guys like Boyle, and a second wave of guys like Clowe, Pavs, and other young guys coming from Woostah that the “leadership” I want from this team can come from places other than Patty. So I can afford to part with Patty."

Thing is, your sense may not be the same as DW’s opinion. If it was I’d be very frightened.
If he expects accountability for playoff failures, I think Marleau has shown that by willingly giving up the “C” even if he was or was not the problem.

I find this absolutely ridiculous. What’s the problem with 30+ goals? Also if the Sharks do resign Marleau, he’ll definitely take a pay cut.

I enjoy arguing and I especially enjoy arguing about the Sharks! I’m always happy to see opposing opinions because it keeps mine in check.

Except that compared to all the other players, he’s the one that keeps stepping up in the playoffs. Plus, he gave up the C for the betterment of the team – if that isn’t leadership (or something extremely similar), I don’t know what is.

He doesn’t play for Calgary, which means his efforts in the playoffs go unnoticed.
But still, Ron Wilson is no longer coach of this team. Was he a bad coach? I mean, he’s not exactly Barry Melrose.
Again, given the comments about Boyle, and the pressure on Clowe, Pavs, Seto, Murray, Ehrhoff and this whole “second wave” as it were, I think management might be getting to the end of their rope with Patty.
I’m not saying I agree with that standpoint. That’s my interpretation of Wilson’s comments.

Ron Wilson is no longer coach because the team got all they could out of his system, and it just wasn’t suited for the style of player the team has. Like, his system is designed so that it can get a bunch of mediocre players work together defensively, and therefore succeed. There wasn’t really any room for offensive creativity – remember how Joe Thornton always stood by the half wall on the PP? And that was it? Doesn’t really utilize things like Michalek’s speed, Setoguchi’s shot, etc. The players became too good for the system, and thus they needed a new challenge.

That is a very fair assessment.
That being said, I think DW might think he’s gotten all he can get out of Patty if there’s no Cup next season.
I know we’ve been through the Yzerman comparisons, but there’s no guarantee Patty is Yzerman or Sakic or Niedermayer.

and again you base this without seeing Patty play for the season … but not with any other player? I just think it’s a little like jumping the gun there.
