OT THREAD!
We need a new OFF TOPIC summer thread. There's so much to talk about that isn't hockey, even though it feels like there's nothing. I rolled a natural 20 on initiative and decided to make my own thread, mostly because I need a place to chat and I don't currently have one. I'm certain others feel the same. Normally I'd let the admins create one, but I'm bored. Honesty, right?
(Wow. I can't believe I came up with that myself!)
Anyway FTF, I have a proposition to make. I think it would be great if FTF could adopt a OT thread type of thing. I think it could become a regular feature. Sort of like a DLD except it doesn't have to be daily and so linky. Once it becomes so commentated upon (like the current "Summer thread") someone could create a new one. By "someone" i mean anyone so one person doesn't have to do it all by them self. One reason for an OT Thread is to keep other threads on-topic. We all know it's weird when someone posts a link to a pregnant baby girl being born on a thread about Captaincy (not mentioning any names...). Also we like to talk... so yeah.
One more thing. Is "OT Thread" a good enough name. Sounds kind of plain to me. Any other name ideas anyone?

OT Thread is ok during the offseason
but I think it could get confusing during the season when 2nd game threads need to be created (which would conceivably cover overtime). I don’t have any other creative names, though. I’d rather sit here and bask in idunno723’s genius than have to be a genius myself.
Cathode rays originate from the negative electrode, or cathode.
Wait what?
Maybe it could be spelled “Off-topic thread.” There’s some creativity!

At least its a somewhat easy read in Stephen King, instead of some incredibly dense play by Shakespeare or something that was written when authors were paid by the word.

well my choices were
semester school or no school, So, I chose semester. Not all CSUs do quarters. I was at CSUF and they had 16 week semesters. It was a nice change from the JC I did my first two years at which had 18 week semesters. 18 weeks.
And I did summer session there too. Morning classes, then straight to work.

Quarters are a full speed sprint into a brick wall.
Semesters were an uphill run in hot sand with bare feet.

Crikey
It’s official, I hate the Giants. Four games against the wildcard leader, blow leads in the last three. A walkoff grandslam in the bottom of the 14th after we scored 3 runs in the top…yikes, just yikes.
Ugh
I checked the scored when it was the top of the 14th, saw that it was 4-1, and thought it was all good. I guess the bright side to this horrible loss was that I didn’t actually see it happen.
Also, this loss made it extremely unlikely that the Giants make the playoffs this year, which makes it all the more suckier.

If our situational hitting does not improve, I would be inclined to agree with you about the playoffs… But I’m not counting them out just yet, you saw what Colorado did a few years ago by peaking too early in the season… They got WASTED by the Red Sox in the WS. 4 games is not that far out. We have 3 against the D’Backs and then 3 more against the Rockies @ home… If we can take 5 of 6, and the Rockies get smoked in L.A., we are right back into this thing…

For all the guff we've given Nabby
for his apparent decline last season, Mirtle just posted some interesting goalkeeper analyses from the last 10 years for each team, and post-lockout for each team. Interestingly enough San Jose had a better save percentage last season (.911 average) versus 2007-2008 (.904) when Nabby was runner up for the Vezina. I wonder if Boucher’s numbers last season helped raise that figure, or if Nabby really wasn’t as bad as we’ve all been feeling he was.
I think Nabby had the same SV% this year, but a higher GAA (I think it was 2.14 last year and 2.44 this year). That plus Patzold and Greiss really weren’t ready to play in NHL games, and so Nabby only got relief when the Sharks got Boucher at the trade deadline, which was still only for two games because he was dominating.

it's interesting to see how our values have changed
in terms of what we want to see in Blockbusters. A movie like the Mummy is a lot more campy and goofy, things today tend to be “gritty and realistic” or very serious

The movie needs to understand what it is and run with it. That’s what makes the good campy films so fun to watch. Serious films are fine and all (District 9 being a good recent example) but campy films will always have a place in my heart.

Holy crap
Only Joe’s photo looks remotely normal. Patty looks too happy, Boyle looks suspicious/angry, and Joe is just happy-go-lucky. He also looks a bit thinner, which would add credence to the reports that he’s in the best shape of his life.
Oh, and wtf is up with Patty’s pants?

Just got back....
From the tank (AC/DC was the shit by the way), and while simultaneously tuning out the bible thumpers telling me something I already knew (going to hell), and standing in the incredibly huge line to get into the arena, I happened to peek into the Sharks store and my heart jumped a little — Saw a 2 full racks of JR jerseys sitting on the floor…. I thought they weren’t allowed to sell merch of a player after he had retired?? I know that they prolly had surplus stock to shed, but just seeing his name on the back of a Sharks jersey again made me nostalgic. Anyways, tonight was great, can’t wait to be going back to the tank for another reason…………

You see someone in obvious distress stopped at an intersection
you
A) honk loudly, aggressive drive to their side and drive off when the light changes
B) change lanes and drive off the other way
C) honk aggressively and continuously
D) Assess the situation for your own safety, then park your car where it is w/blinkers on and go make sure no one needs serious help. Provide assistance if they do.
You should pick D.
Sadly, most people this morning picked A, B, and C.

yes, pulling to the side would be better but that option was not available as there was no real shoulder. And her car was blocking traffic flow in the lane anyway.

Sad, really
It’s hard to get people to care about the misfortune of others, especially if it negatively impacts their commute. Only when it happens to them is it a big deal.
There’s a saying in my field, “the worst crime is the one that happens to you.” I think it applies here as well.
by Chicago Shark on Sep 4, 2009 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions
it's weird
I figure if I see someone else in distress, I am morally obligated to help them*. It’s my job as a fellow human who is capable of providing assistance. I don’t know how you just leave when someone clearly needs assistance. If the situation is under control, ok, but if not & you don’t act, you can’t be sure anyone else will.
- in some cases help is simply defined as alerting the police once in a safer location. I won’t bust up into someone being held at gun point because odds are I’ll just make things worse but I will call 911 and offer assistance if the person is injured/the scene is safe to enter.
I really should get first aid certified.

First Aid Certification
Someone who teaches those classes told my wife not to assist people in public. The legal ramifications are too severe if you eff it up. If you do intend on helping people, carry disposable gloves and a breathing mask. Unless you want Tuberculosis, then go right ahead.
What a world we live in, eh?
"iaT"S FUCKINGE LIEK CONICO DO MAYO!!!!!111"
Mr. K. 5/5/2009
same thing for CPR
you have to ask a conscious individual if they need assistance. If they say no, you cannot legally be protected if you help them and they sue. You also cannot legally assist a minor, even if they aren’t breathing, unless you are able to ask the parents/already have been given written authorization by them or the guardian to do so.
Once an adult passes out, however, you are allowed to help them. Unconsciousness in life threatening situations is considered legally binding consent. (at least in California)
First aid, not sure how that works, though I think even EMTs can get sued for helping someone who obviously needs it but denies it when asked.
I do still need to get myself some gloves and a mask or some plastic bags to make into a makeshift thing if I ever do need to give someone CPR.
resident cartoonist @CouchTarts Endorsed by Mr. K on "CINCODEMYOOR!!!!!" Proud member of the "Don't Trade Marleau" Club
also why I have to get insurance once I start working as a trainer. Because people will sue me. Sometimes it bothers me how litigious we are. Been on the bad end of a frivilous law suit before. I was the only injured party in a car accident and yet we had to pay out to the OTHER car because they claimed emotional distress and all this damage. Our car no longer had a full front end, they had a dented bumper. The insurance co. said they don’t even bother fighting claims anymore and just paid out. Lame-ola.
resident cartoonist @CouchTarts Endorsed by Mr. K on "CINCODEMYOOR!!!!!" Proud member of the "Don't Trade Marleau" Club
Like I said,
Sad. I’m with you, my parents raised me to help when I can, and there have been some times here that you see people who obviously need help, and you see others literally stepping over or around them while still talking on their phones. There was one time at a bus stop where a guy had had way too much to drink, fell off the bench and busted his head open and was bleeding all over the place. There were a bunch of people waiting for the bus who just stepped back or walked to the next stop, while another person called 911 and I kept talking to the guy to make sure he stayed conscious.
It was a great illustration of the bystander effect, where everyone else waits for someone else to do the work. Seems like everybody is looking out for #1 these days.

If you take CPR and/or first aid at the Red Cross they give you a cute little thing you put on your key chain that has gloves, face thingy, etc. I got certified in both a couple of months ago.
Side note – how safe are the FTF gatherings going to be with you and me there? This way you and I can save the bums after Morti beats them up…
