There are several problems:

1. The Sharks did not win The Cup

2. The Sharks did not win at least 4 playoff games

3. The Sharks are over the Salary Cap by about $2M

4. It's not Saturday

5.People on this board are entirely too civil to each other. We need far more trash talking and heated seriousness.

While not a solution to all 5 of these problems, we can at least do something about one of them.

In response to a comment from TCY, it's time for everyone to give a shout out to their old Alma Mater and remember the best college sports experience they had.

Was it stomping on the bleachers in the fourth quarter? Was it the echoes in the gym in the final minute? Was it the bus ride to the big away game? Was it the pep rally before home coming? Was it being so trashed after the big loss you couldn't remember the entire week before?

Show us your colors!

Go Ags! We are sons of California!

Or was it listening to the baseball games as you ran around the track at night

in the dark, because they didn’t turn both sets of lights on. But that’s ok, it kept most of the bugs away. This despite the fact that as a student you have numerous chances to get in fro free, but you liked the idea of listening while you ran just a bit better.

All Tulane had going for it was baseball.

And when Micah Owings and Brian Bogusevic signed after our junior year, they were my class even if I never met them, the team was nowhere near as good as it was with them. As far as football went, well 2000 people watching a game in the Superdome is kinda sad.

Okay, so while I haven’t technically had the whole “attending a game” experience yet, I have to walk past the football players and marching band practicing every day on my way to class, so I think it counts.

I was not really into college sports when I was in college

Lacrosse is the big sport @ Johns Hopkins and they’re really good but I only went to a couple of games. I’m kind of glad because it was in junior year that I re-discovered ice hockey/NHL and fell in love with the greatest sport ever.

Loyola Chicago

is still the only school in Illinois to win the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship (1963, only because we dared start black players). Since then, the only good sport we’ve had has been men’s volleyball (ranked in the top 10 while I was an undergrad). With all that illustrious sports history, the only real school sports memory I have was watching the men’s soccer team (unranked) play the number 13 team to a draw at home, while waiting to get on the field with the men’s club team. Not that great, but still fun and memorable.

I feel like I preface each of these things with...

“In Britain…”

We dont really bother with college sports. If you are 18 and you didnt make it as a professional footballer (Futbol, Soccer, whatever is the parlance of our times) you probably arent going to get scouted playing for your university team.

Having said that, most university towns have an abundance of professional sports to get behind, even if the mascots are a little funky:

Everybody, I’d like to introduce you to Big G, the Huddersfield Giants (Rugby) mascot. The bloke on the left.

And The Huddersfield Town mascot, Terry the Yorkshire Terrier:

and Hometown pride, Benny The Buck – AFC Telford United

I actually went to UC Berkeley too, but only the extension. I dont think that qualifies me to root for the team. If anything I should be rooting for self motivation!

Ah the glory days

Back in my day (‘00-’04) we were still DII, and won the Directors Cup 4 out of 6 years, were 2 years removed from a National Title in Basketball, and had gobs of titles in Swimming, Track, Cross Country and the like.

The DIA transition has been tough, but hey, we still had lots to cheer about.

DI Transition

UCD in DII was a Big Fish in a small pond. The rough move up was inevitable.
Going back to hockey, while UCD isn’t involved in it on the NCAA level, they have a fairly good representation on the sports club level.

Ice Hockey

Roller Hockey

Even though I went to Cal Poly

I will always be an Aggies fan. I remember the game I attended against northern colorado like it was yesterday. A old family friend with the university had to attend a function for a donor at the mondavi center and gave my family her tickets. An illegal procedure penalty with seconds left in the 4th before the snap sets the aggies back a few yards, and they had only a hail mary option to get the win. I ran to the railing of the south endzone for that last play. I saw Greg Dunham throw up a prayer to Bakari Grant, and Grant leapt over 5 defenders to catch that ball in the endzone. I leaped over the railing and charged the field, my hoarse lungs making as much noise as they could. That game will probably be the most magical win of that program in the new stadium, unless they do something likewise during the playoffs. I later got Bakari to sign my ticket. In what was a tough year of aggies football, that game was pure AWESOME.

So far, school athletics are not super awesome. I have only been to one Football game, and a couple of the hockey games where I got really lost in Oakland. I am hoping that when I take Grandma to home coming this year and we watch the Bears destroy USC it will be better.
Incidentally, SJS Hockey games are fun and cheep to go to.

UC Santa Cruz

That’s right boys and girls. Proud to be a mighty, fighting Banana Slug. Possibly one of the few mascots you can put “mighty” and “fighting” in front of and still have it not be intimidating.
Best college memory was either our home playoff soccer game of 2004 where we had 1000 fans show up, with no bleachers, streakers and the crowd rush the field after a penalty shootout, or the party after the tennis team swept the NCAA DIII tournament (singles, doubles and team). Oddly enough, don’t remember much of that, but what I do remember was, Legen…wait for it…dary

Our good sports teams were soccer, so I don’t really have any good/bad memories of the sporting events there. But, if you are a fan of Gonzaga and that cry baby mother fucker, Adam Morrison, well, you probably kick puppies.

UCLA Bruins

We are the Mighty Bruins…

Hmm I don’t have a lot of great sports memories, because during the time I was in school, we were being coached by the Lizard of Westwood, he of lots of hair styling product, Steve Lavin. He’d make some runs into the Sweet Sixteen to save his job, but thankfully his jig was up during my last year of college. There was much rejoicing in Westwood.

I do remember Bob Toledo’s infamous “toilet bowl” comment when the BCS came out and I believe we were second or third in that BCS standings… and then the rest of the season was a lot of SUCK. I was there when DeShaun Foster ran off 300 something yards against Washington and that was a lot of fun.

Best memories were out of college – 13-9 over USC and killing their BCS Championship hopes, the massive comeback over Gonzaga and making Adam Morrison cry, the 2005 season when we were winning football games by ridiculous comebacks with the help of Maurice Jones-Drew and Marcedes Lewis.
