"San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced Friday that the team has acquired center Patrick White and defenseman Daniel Rahimi from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich."

So we’re going with the youth movement this season. Not bad I guess. The guys from Woostah are ready I guess.

On the other hand, I need some sort of celebration smiley to celebrate some cap space being freed up.

They just had Luko do a signing! That’s really the only reason why I am surprised, but still, shocked.

Eklund had those rumors about Cheech to the Isles. I think they were waiting for Cheech to go on waivers. I wouldn’t be surprised if their interest has died down. With the team under the cap, I think teams are going to be less excited about Cheech since they can’t steal him.

If anyone can get links to the updated cap numbers for the team (when they are ultimately calculated, that’d be cool. But rough estimates based on my fuzzy memory, we were $2M over. Christian and Luko were a combined $4.5 roughly? So, we’re under by $2.5M. Is that right?

Pat White – 1st round 2007

Prospect Grade: 6.0 D (About Prospect Grades)
Profile Contributed By: HF Staff

History
Patrick White has played his last four seasons at Grand Rapids High School, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. During that time, he skated on the US U17 Select Team at the U17 Five nations Tournament in Huttwil, Switzerland. Was drafted by the Seattle Thunderbirds in the spring of 2004, but chose to stay and play at home. Was drafted by the Lincoln Stars in the summer of 2005, but again chose to stay and play at his high school. During the 2005-06 season – his junior year – he helped his squad get into the post season and into the state championships. He struck a deal with Lincoln to play before and after his high school season during the 2006-07 season. Grand Rapids got back into the playoffs and won the 7AA Section Championship. He was also named the 2007 Associated Press Minnesota High School Hockey Player of the Year, Associated Press First Team All-State, a Minnesota Mr. Hockey Finalist and earned St. Paul Pioneer Press First Team All State honors. He was selected to the U.S. U18 squad that was set to take the ice in Finland.

2007-08: White didn’t have an easy time securing ice-time with the historic Gophers team. As a result, his offensive production was not where one would hope from an NHL first rounder, with just 10 points in 45 games.

Talent Analysis
White’s a creative playmaker that can give a team a lot of confidence. He skates very well and can handle the puck very well in and out of traffic. His biggest strength lies within his all-around game, which the Canucks hope he will hone during his collegiate career.

Daniel Rahimi - 3rd round 2006

Prospect Grade: 6.0 D (About Prospect Grades)
Profile Contributed By: HF Staff

History
Rahimi spent the 2005-06 campaign playing for Bjorkloven in the Swedish hockey system.

2006-07: The big Swede returned to Bjorkloven for another season, appearing in 33 games, racking up two points and 104 penalty minutes. Following the elimination of the team from the playoffs, Rahimi traversed the Atlantic to appear in one regular season and four playoff games with the Manitoba Moose. It was a rocky start, but the fact that he came over is reassuring for his future.

2007-08: Rahimi came to North America and began his journey to the NHL with a very average performance at the Canucks’ rookie camp where top talent like Alexander Edler and the tragically deceased Luc Bourdon significantly outperformed him. Rahimi did not take to the more physical North American game as well as anticipated and while he did play the bulk of his games (41 in the AHL), he did played 19 times with the Victoria Salmon Kings.

Talent Analysis
He has great size at 6’3, 200 lbs and plays a mean, on-the-edge defensively-focused game. At this point he lacks the offensive talents to be a contributor offensively, but the organization does not see that as a huge concern. He has decent skating and has been touted by Swedish scout Thomas Gradin as being extremely mature.

His offensive skills are extremely limited and his skating needs significant improvement before he can hope to make the transition to the NHL. His turning is poor and his top end speed is not NHL level.

Future
He definitely has some work cut out for him, but his raw physical attributes give the Canucks hope for his future. He uncertainly has the work ethic, maturity and style of play to be an effective third pairing defenseman in the NHL if he can only overcome his shortcomings, however significant they are at this time.

well, white was mentioned a few times.
most of the discussion over there is about how, despite our farm system being quite deep, none of our defense prospects seemed not quite ready for NHL, being closer to the AHL level with Manitoba, and we are overloaded with forwards who all want a chance with the NHL.

Looking at their stats and history, it looks like the Sharks just traded two NHL players for two players that will likely not ever be NHL regulars.

That comes with the territory when you’re dealing to get under the cap. I mentioned it earlier in the summer, but when the Ducks were over the cap, the eventually had to trade a useful Mathieu Schneider for contracts that amounted to 2 NHL GP by Ken Klee (before ANA paid half his salary to play in PHX).

Basically, it’s the ultimate “dealing from weakness”. The fact that the trade goes through is pretty much the return.

I probably won’t complain too much about that, so long as goalies keep falling into Anaheim’s lap. It’s true, Bryz was in Hiller’s way, and there was no market — Burkie looks pretty good there, I think.

Plus it’s tough to quantify the effect, but Burke generally appeared to keep his word for a player and give him a chance elsewhere. Even if it was just optics, Burke looked like a pretty player-first GM on that move, and it may have helped UFA perception of Anaheim in some respects.

Certainly it’s never optimal to give away a star goalie, but under the circumstances I don’t give Burke a lot of shit about that.

I’m very curious to see what sort of UFAs Wilson might go after. $2.5 isn’t much, but it’s probably good enough to find some youngish guys for the third line. I’d like the team to go back a bit to the days when the third line was guys like Goc, Grier and Rissmiller who could play the PK and contribute the odd goal. Save Patty and Pavs for offensive output.

gives us 4 m in cap space to sign Staubitz, Mitchell and call up either Joslin, Moore or Petrecki and still have about 1.5 or so in space to make another, ‘bigger’ move.

There wasn’t any room in the top four for Ehrhoff anyways. Great to get Lukowich off our books too.

Sharks got robbed.

White is a laughingstock among Canucks fans (he gets outscored by rookies on his NCAA team) and Rahimi has been playing in the ECHL. Lukowich alone is worth more than them. Ehrhoff should have at least gotten us a 1st round pick in addition. I can see why some people dislike Wilson now.

by tarlinian on Aug 28, 2009 1:00 PM PDT reply actions

Cap space is important though. In one trade, we got $4.5M. We were always going to get robbed. No one was going to pay what Ehrhoff or Luko was worth, not when they knew how bad our cap situation was. This trade isn’t the judgement on Wilson. It’s what he does with this $4.5M that’ll show if he knows what he’s doing or not (my money, so to speak, is on Wilson pulling through).

Ehrhoff is bad. Getting two middle prospects for him and salary relief is a win-win. You get a defensive liability off the roster and you free up a good load of cap space. Sounds good to me.

Just tossing this out there as a Leafs fan to see your reactions

Trade:

Jason Blake, Matt Stajan, and Mike Van Ryn for Patrick Marleau and Jonathan Cheechoo.

San Jose ends up with 18 players and $4.9 million in cap space, Toronto is down to 22 players and $1.5 million in cap space.

Thoughts?

I’m not sure Couture is going to be called up this season- he’s yet to play a full season in the AHL, and there’s not a pressing need to rush him into third line duty. I think the earliest we see him on the NHL roster is 2010-2011.

As for the proposed deal, I can tell you it’s not going to happen. Marleau would never waive his no trade clause to play for Ron Wilson.

Off the top of my head

Stajan is probably the only player out of that group I’m interested in (age being a definite factor, plus seemingly steady production).

Blake is a great character guy, and this is a team that probably needs some character. Numbers don’t impress me TOO much on him.

Van Ryn’s health is of concern to me.

Granted, what’s working against you most in this trade is Patty and Cheech are fan favorites among some here (among others, they are the cause of world hunger, global warming and the next war).

It’s interesting to consider, but I don’t think I’d do it.

Definitely a market for Stajan

Young player, decent steady numbers. He’d be great on a third line at the moment with growth potential. Van Ryn, the injury thing is worrisome. Blake is solid.

But with all the free agent signings, you guys look to certainly be better this year. Do you really need to move these guys?

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Aug 28, 2009 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes

Well it’s a combination of having too many 3rd line forwards, and too many blue liners. I’m tossing Stajan in because he doesn’t really fit on the top two lines, and Blake is just sort of a sweetener who happens to be making too much money for a player his age.

Amongst the forwards alone we have the following players who should be in their first or second season in the NHL:

Kulemin, Grabovski, Mitchell, Bozak, StĂĄlberg, Hanson, Tlusty, Wallin

Mitchell, StĂĄlberg, Hanson, Tlusty, and Wallin are all “extra” at this point… but none of them will fill the role of top end scoring threat at this stage of their development.

Then we’ve got the following veterans clogging things up a bit:

Blake, Stajan, Stempniak, Mayers, Primeau, Hagman, Ponikarovsky, Orr.

To be honest, the Leafs AHL affiliate should be quite good this coming season. I’m not saying everyone needs to be shifted out, but the Leafs lack top line scoring punch, and while Blake and Stajan are average to good… neither of them is a top tier forward in the NHL. Marleau and Cheechoo are a ppg player and a former 50 goal scorer. Not necessarily getting them at their best… but who knows.

So I get back from class, boot up my laptop, and HOLY CRAP EHRHOFF WAS TRADED! And then the blue screen of death shows up as I start freaking out.

Obviously, this is purely a salary dump with some prospects coming back the other way to help bolster the farm (which has been getting a lot stronger this off-season, what with all the free-agent and college signings the organization has done). Lukowich and Ehrhoff free up around $4.7M in cap space, giving the Sharks a lot more flexibility in who they can sign out of training camp.

While Lukowich was easily the worst defenseman last year not named Semenov (who earned about a third of his pay and wasn’t invited back this year), the loss of Ehrhoff is going to hurt the team. His puck-moving ability, shot (when accurate), and speed will be sorely missed, but on a team with Rob Blake and 5 more years of Dan Boyle, he was a bit redundant. Plus, there’s a reason why his nickname is “Error.”

Still, I’m going to miss Ehrhoff’s moments of brilliance and Lukowich’s musical talents. I just hope that they don’t join the ranks of former Sharks who turn around and dominate this team.

From Mirtle:
This is a big time salary dump, as the two prospects coming in aren’t anything to crow about. As far as I can tell, the Sharks have about $2.5-million left under the salary cap after having been over for much of the summer, and one of the first orders of business will be to re-sign restricted free agent Torrey Mitchell to a new deal.

I think more moves are coming for the Sharks here, and that may even involve the long rumoured deal for Dany Heatley. Dumping Ehrhoff and Lukowich gives Wilson a lot of flexibility going forward, especially if he can also move out Jonathan Cheechoo, although it’d still be wise for him to add another cheap veteran on the back end at some point.

I’ll be very surprised if this is the lineup San Jose goes into the season with. We were told to expect big changes, and I imagine those are still on the way.

Now that we have cap room.....

Sweet

The wayward shot from the blue line and the idiotic out of the zone passes are history (Ehrhorff), and somebody earning way too much for the lack of defensive talent is also history (Luko). Sooooooo what does that leave us with? — A whole bunch of breathing room under the cap to sign some of our more reasonable talents in Mitchell and Staubitz. Also, this appears to be a bait and switch move on the part DW. We can give certain people the raises that they deserve as well as giving more flexibility to the GM for more moves during training camp and next season before the trading deadline. The question remains as to who else is set to go? Cheechoo maybe? Who knows, the possibilities are endless right now, the salary dump is on and if we are to sign that huge talent, we would definitely be able to accommodate their salary if we choose to go that route.
