Ehrhoff & Lukowich Moved For Prospects
Bada bing, bada boom. Per sjsharks.com:
San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced Friday that the team has acquired center Patrick White and defenseman Daniel Rahimi from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich.
Some initial reactions provided in bullet form, because DW really did bite the bullet here.
- The prospects in question (HF breakdowns of White and Rahimi) are really nothing to write home about. If this deal occurs in the middle of the season, I'm livid- while Ehrhoff isn't sound defensively, his power play production is an asset that should net a much higher return. At face-value, the Sharks got swindled here. Let that be clear. Essentially this is a product of his salary, San Jose's salary structure, and GM's realizing DW was painted into a corner. I'm sure he was getting lowballed left and right. That'll Cheech You and Earl Sleek mentioned as much in earlier pieces for Fear The Fin and Battle of California respectively.
- Silver lining? Salary cap flexibility. Wilson is now able to either a) fill out the roster with young players on the cheap or b) pursue a trade with much more bargaining power than he had on Thursday. As it stands now, San Jose needs to sign three forwards and two defenseman to compose a 22 man roster. Most estimates have pegged Torrey Mitchell around $.8 M, which means two forwards and two defenseman need to come under contract with $3.53 M remaining under the cap. That boils down to $.88 M per skater, definitely manageable considering those four would be serving a fourth line, bottom pairing, and healthy scratch role.
- As for losing Ehrhoff and Lukowich, I proposed earlier this offseason that they were the two blueliners who should be moved. Here's a few quotes from previous pieces that explain that rationale:
Looking at the backend, Ehrhoff's ability as a puck moving defenseman has been replaced by Kent Huskins, making Ehrhoff expendable. The blueline currently is in a bit of a logjam in terms of salary- moving Vlasic would be asinine, and Murray (who we will touch upon later) would leave San Jose with a D corps lacking a physical presence.
With the salary cap situation the way it is, one would have to assume a blueliner is on the move- there's no way San Jose can afford to pay Huskins that sort of money to serve as a 7. Brad Lukowich was disappointing after the first twenty games of the season, and freeing up his $1.56 M salary would go a long way towards getting San Jose's offseason back to a manageable level.
In that regard, I'm content with the personnel that were given up. I don't think you're able to rid yourself of Brad Lukowich without packaging him with Ehrhoff, and that was probably a selling point for Wilson- my guess is that the Canucks were pushing for Ehrhoff, and DW countered by saying, "We'll make this move only if you take Lukowich." That's an aspect of the deal I think he should be commended for.
- A lot of talk says that this sets the stage for Wilson to take another stab at Heatley. I'm not so sure. Regardless of my wariness in making a move for Heatley, let's look at this objectively. You now have given up an essential piece in a deal with Ottawa- every single rumor that has made it's way around the internet this offseason has named Ehrhoff. It's still a possibility, but now San Jose doesn't have the assets to provide Ottawa with the puck moving offensive defenseman they seem to be looking for. I'm not sure that improves DW's chances, even if San Jose is much more flexible monetarily.
- If I had to put money down, it probably would have to be on DW making the infamous Kessel Run. There's roughly 18 parsecs until training camp begins, and while Boston is dealing with salary cap issues of their own, most accounts have Wilson pursuing this very hard. It would have to be creative and possibly involve a third team, but I have a feeling this is going to be DW's play. As mentioned before, he's dealing from a position of power, with Boston being the one who is in a bind. Call it a hunch, pure speculation, or a baseless claim, but The Force is strong with this one...
David Pollak of Working The Corners is reporting that Joslin, Demers, Moore, and Petrecki will be battling it out for a spot on the San Jose roster. Here's a quote from a previous piece that looks at the pros and cons of some of these players (after trading Ehrhoff and Lukowich, which was the basis of the exercise):
If I'm DW, I realize I need a defensive defenseman on the blueline. Here's what I had to say about Derek Joslin earlier this season:
"Derek Joslin: Probably the most unmemorable of the four (which was a good thing), Joslin played well enough with the big club for me to be content with him sticking around. That being said, it's just not going to happen. He was sent down yesterday, and it seems as if his time in San Jose will most likely be done for the remainder of this year (barring an injury to one of our seven defensemen).
I liked what Derek brought to the table- he was physical in the corners, made smart and conservative passes on the breakout, was rarely out of position, and could skate decently well- a solid player for our bottom pairings in years to come, with the potential to get top-four minutes on a fairly deep blueline."
Hockey's Future has this to say:
"Talent Analysis
A sound overall game; he plays in all situations and is very composed. Good offensive instincts. A great one-timer. Skating stride is a weakness
Future
He’s projected to be a middle pairing defender in the NHL."
Bringing up Joslin to play with Boyle is pretty risky considering both can be defined as guys who prefer the offensive side of the ice, and the fact that pairing is going to see 17+ minutes a night at even strength. From what I saw he's not ready for the workload at this point in his career, and having him serve as a healthy scratch makes no sense from an organizational standpoint. However, let's float the idea around and say he is brought up. If that's the case, I bump Murray up with Boyle, leave Vlasic and Blake together, and hope Joslin works with Huskins.
Another interesting possibility would be Mike Moore. He's known for his physical play, and although he didn't see any game time in San Jose this season, Moore did get called up during the year. If he's the answer here, I'm still moving Murray up to play with Boyle and sheltering Moore on the bottom pairing with Huskins.
Outside of the organization, it's hard to predict. Ehrhoff or Cheechoo would likely be the only players who would be able to bring back a serviceable NHL defenseman. As for the healthy scratch department, I'm not sure you're going to be able to find someone better than Alexei Semenov on the open market at that price tag. Here's what was said about him earlier this offseason, and I'm still not convinced that letting him walk was the right choice. We'll see what happens.
Your guess is as good as mine here, but I'm thinking we only see one of these guys make the team out of camp, with Wilson taking a stab into the free agent market for a veteran blueliner to fill out the roster. I stand by my previous assertion that Semenov is a worthy 6-7 man in that role.
Thoughts from readers can be found in FTF's initial fanshot. James Mirtle of From The Rink, Greg Wyshynski of Puck Daddy, PJ Swenson of Sharkspage, and Sean Zandberg of Nucks Misconduct have more reactions.

Hey all… first post on this board….
Just read the scouting report on White via www.sharkspage.com…
White is as about as soft as they come. Supposedly he has great hands but dude does not compete, AND I QUOTE: “lacks any physical dimension to his game”….

Dominoes
This move is basically akin to letting the guys walk during free agency because I don’t think either prospect is going to pan out.
The move is a domino. By itself, it leaves the roster weaker on paper. This move will have to be viewed in the light of what Doug Wilson will do with the $4.5M he just got. If that to-do list doesn’t include Torrey Mitchell and Brad Staubitz, most of us are probably going to call for Wilson’s head, unless he ships those guys for something magical.
No Heatley please, thank you.

Love it
We get lotsa cap space, move a nearly unmoveable player in Lukowich and open up a spot for one of our AHL prospects to earn at the back-end. We definitely could’ve received more, but we were gonna get under-value returns on this first trade because of our cap space either way and I think players like Cheechoo and Michalek have more overall value.
For all the good Ehrhoff did offensively and on the pp his defense and decision-making negated much of that. You gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette and these were two eggs I have no problem cracking.

I keep switching from happy to angry when thinking about this deal, depending on what else I am thinking of (ex: right now, losing Bonino is pissing me off in a completely unrelated way, so I am mad about this deal as well).
While our defense is considerably weaker with the loss of Ehrhoff, and likely a prospect’s development will have to be rushed a bit more than I’d like, it does ultimately give the Sharks a lot more breathing room to bring up various prospects and fill out the depth on the rest of the roster without having to worry about trading other players. Hell, Cheechoo doesn’t even have to be traded anymore (which is really weird, as I didn’t expect him to be wearing teal this year at all).

Sweet
(Well I posted this on the other thread, but it seems dead now… Lemme know what you guys think)
The wayward shot from the blue line and the idiotic out of the zone passes are history (Ehrhorff), and somebody earning way too much for the lack of defensive talent is also history (Luko). Sooooooo what does that leave us with? — A whole bunch of breathing room under the cap to sign some of our more reasonable talents in Mitchell and Staubitz. Also, this appears to be a bait and switch move on the part DW. We can give certain people the raises that they deserve as well as giving more flexibility to the GM for more moves during training camp and next season before the trading deadline. The question remains as to who else is set to go? Cheechoo maybe? Who knows, the possibilities are endless right now, the salary dump is on and if we are to sign that huge talent, we would definitely be able to accommodate their salary if we choose to go that route.

Spot on, Plank
The first thing I did when I heard about the trade was head over to hockeyfutures, and I wasn’t happy to see those guys were the 16th and 17th best prospects for VAN. The Sharks will be lucky if these guys turn into Semenov and Vesce. Didn’t we just get rid of Kaspar? Why take on another soft former 1st rounder?
Obviously, I voted that I didn’t like the trade, though mainly because Ehrhoff should have pulled in at least one top 10 prospect on some team. That said, Ehrhoff is heavily overrated and is a liability in every situation except the power play. 5 on 5 his numbers were awful. Anyone else notice that 5 on 5 the Sharks actually scored more often with DOUG MURRAY on the ice than Ehrhoff? Joslin/Moore will provide the same overall value (seriously) for 1/6th the price (and 1/6th the flash, fwiw).

Hate to beat the dead horse
but I like the trade because of all the open space DW has created. I think this trade ensures that our favorite players (Patty, Seto, Pavs, Murray, etc.) won’t be going anywhere for a little while at least. As has been said above, I’d be thrilled if we picked up Kessel or Chimera with the freed up cap space.
I wonder if the now-famous “one phone call” was to Vancouver the whole time…

Glad Ehrhoff is finally gone. For as much talent as he had offensively, he was inconsisant and insufficient to make up for his defense. I’ll miss Lukowich though.

That's just silly
I’d have us minimum second in the Pacific. Kings aren’t quite there yet, who knows which Stars team will show up, and are the Coyotes still a team? Someone saying we’ll be 9th in the West means that they’re just blindly upset at the trade prima facia (on the face of it), or they don’t know what they’re talking about. Maybe a combination of both.

NHL.com Rankings
The NHL.com hockey rankings are out and the Sharks are tenth overall and sixth in the west..I think this is pretty accurate of what to expect from this Sharks team..
I think its great that there are zero expectations for this team..Last year everyone was picking us to win the cup or be close..This year, its all changed, now everyone figures the Sharks will make the playoff and gag all over themselves again..NOBODY will pick the Sharks this year, so its probably better for the team, not to have any expectations..

I would
in that he’s not a rookie. He’s been around the league for a few years (03-04 I believe), so that would also make him a veteran defenseman. The fact that he looks like a 12 year old boy doesn’t help. He could be 35 and still look like a rookie on a college squad.
Why is it so hard for me to not spell things the way the British/Canadians/Australians spell things? Every time I type “defense” I have to backspace and change the c to an s (defence to defense). Weird, guess I’m a closet subject of her majesty.

I'm OK with the trade,
like everyone says, it was a salary dump. Happy to see that there are lowered expectations. I’ll be interested to see who we pick up to fill out the roster. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, when will this offseason be over so I can watch some hockey again!!!

Make way for the young guys
maybe some desperation to impress for next year will pay dividends in the playoffs. let’s give ’em a chance. Erhoff is good, but no longer essential, and moving Lukowich is good.
The one phone call has been made. Roster is almost done now and we see our team. Sign Mitchell and Staubitz, maybe get another cheap hungry young guy, or just keep the keep the space in pocket.
Still would like to see a bone-crusher on D. Maybe Moore will work out.

From the Pucked News Agency
While all this trade action was going down, Pucked News Agency got some quotes from both athletes. Christian Ehrhoff was quoted as asking: “Vancouver? Do they have schnitzengrouben there? Like Teske’s Germania?”. Luko in his typical casual manner was quoted as saying “Aw Fuck! Not again! Doug Wilson takes it up the…”

So basically...
We traded Ehrhoff and Lukowich for Huskins and most likely a kid from woo-stah…and saved a few million bucks doing so? I can live with that.
Count me in the crowd that was tired of Errorhoff’s goofs. I know what his upside is, but I think Huskins should fill in just fine moving the puck without the mental lapses (from what I’ve read on him, anyways). And now we have some flexibility to make another move to bolster the lineup.
And the prospects aren’t nothing. While they may not look like much now, you never know when or with who something will click. I’m excited to see what comes next!
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

i don't think Huskins fills in the puck-mover role
he’s only played 1 full NHL season, and he scored 19 points. Ehrhoff scored more than that every season he has been in the league. Although I’[ll give huskins the benefit of the doubt – what leads you to believe he will adequately replace that role?
