Woohoo!

Yay for Torrey Mitchell!

But for the money is that too much or just perfectly fine?

NO AMOUNT OF MONEY IS TOO MUCH FOR TORREY MITCHELL

I wouldn't be against it

But, believe it or not, I was one of the ones who chose the “less than $1M” option in the Mitchell poll a while back. Basically, I’d prefer for him to have a cheaper contract for cap reasons, but I won’t complain if he gets more than that simply because I think he’s worth it.

I would have guessed that a hit north of $1M means that he might be slated to move up a line or two before the end of his contract. I mean we all understood that Cheechoo’s $3M for 3rd line duty is too much for the Sharks. But $1.3M for a mostly unproven (yes he was great two years ago, but not an offensive machine) 3rd line winger seems on the high end. Thoughts?

Just about to post this.....

So glad he is remaining in teal. Now all that remains are McGinn and Staubitz correct, then go out and sigh other players?

McGinn is still under contract. Staubitz is the only RFA that still needs to be re-signed.

THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY

A little more money than I expected, but I really don’t care. TORREY MITCHELL IS SIGNED FOR THREE MORE YEARS!!!

I was initially irked by the cash...

But I guess the cap hit isn’t too bad considering the length of term. We’ve got him until he’s 27 at an ~$1.3MM hit? I can live with it.

Still, I wish it would have only been the 10% raise we were discussing. We’ve got less room now than I had though originally.

God, DW is really generous with those pay raises.

While I think it’s a bit much considering he didn’t play a regular season game last year, it might turn out to be better than a one year at $0.8. Should appreciate nicely.

Two forwards, two defensemen left. Roughly $.74 per player. Definitely manageable, but I think Cheechoo might be a little more on edge in the next month if Petrecki ($1.125 M) or Moore ($1.00 M) have a solid camp*.

*Side note- anyone know a website to find out those guys salary bonus terms? It may be possible that they make less next season. McGinn too. I couldn’t find that information on CapGeek.

healthy?

It is a bit much for an injured player but for a guy whose energy and enthusiasm dwarfed everyone in the few appearances he has had…well worth the dollars.

Here's to the second round!

by Aero72 on Aug 31, 2009 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Yay Yay Happy Mina Dance

I don’t have to worry about getting a new jersey until DW trades him and a first rounder for Chris Pronger. sigh

In all seriousness, I’m thrilled with the signing but I am perplexed by all the pay raises. I agree with Plank that as a one year hit this is too much for someone who didn’t play at all last year. But I think the length of the deal is what makes it a good one. Thanks for not making me sweat this out much longer Doug.

He'll prove he's worth the $$

Great to have him signed, and completely expected after the cap room relief acquired through the Ehrhoff deal.

good price. i thought it would be alittle more but since he was hurt last season it really hurt his salary..

by briansays on Aug 30, 2009 11:21 PM PDT reply actions

ultimately I think his injury will prove extremely beneficial to our franchise (economically) as we progress forward, not to mention Mitchell is a Shark and doesn’t want to be anywhere else

Question now is

what does this do for TCY’s wet dream of Taylor Pyatt?

by fatbabies on Aug 31, 2009 12:23 AM PDT reply actions

Well, I don’t think it hurts or helps. Still need some forwards, but the cap hit may affect who that is. If Cheechoo leaves, though (which I think he does), then we’ll have plenty o’ cash.

And BTW… my push for Pyatt is probably my lest fervent push so far this year. If you really want me to swoon, drop a “Halak to Sharks” rumor or 2.

So what are the odds

that Cheech is moved before the season starts? Or is the general consensus that if he is moved it will be by the deadline?

by Chicago Shark on Aug 31, 2009 8:09 AM PDT reply actions

The odds are, I think, 70-30 that Cheechoo gets moved before the first game of the season.

Fear the Fin: Where... IMA TAKING UR BLOGZ FRUM U!!

by TCY on Aug 31, 2009 8:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Good odds

The high(er) cap hit does put more pressure on Cheechoo being moved.

Wonder where?

Wild beat writer speculated they may be interested since they lost out on Tanguay.
The Bolts still need a top 6 fwd.
I’d rule out the Isles since Eklund mentioned them as a “rumor”.

Any other options?

Please DW, more cap space.

by IsThisTheYear? on Aug 31, 2009 8:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Buffalo is interested too, apparently. If you drop Cheechoo, you now have much more to spend to improve the roster.

Instead of $2.9MM to spend on 4 players, you now have $5.9MM to spend on 5, which is much better IMO.

As of right now, the roster hasn’t gotten any better. If DW wants to see the team improve, itt’l have to be through UFA signings. To sign UFA’s that will improve the team, you have to move Cheechoo.

Sorry Cheech.

by TCY on Aug 31, 2009 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep - need to fill out roster with some vet either through UFA or trade

I think we need a 3rd line winger and maybe a 6th dman (or 4th if Huskins or Murray can’t step up).

For UFA wingers, I like Malhotra, Moore, or Pyatt would be good for the 3rd line. Betts, Peca, Hinote, Pettinger (maybe?) would be good for the 4th line/backup fwd.

For D, I like Siedenberg, Babchuk, MA Bergeron (for his PP skills).

If Cheechoo can be dealt for Josh Harding, that’d be ideal as Harding would give us a great backup and a hedge against Nabby’s pending free agency.

by IsThisTheYear? on Aug 31, 2009 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes please
If Cheechoo can be dealt for Josh Harding

This would be an awsome deal for us, (and MIN would get a 30+ goal wing that they need).

What do you think about these names of UFA for us?

at F
Eric Perrin

Mike York

Michel Ouellet

I like Perrin the best out of these three. He made 0.75 mil last year so a 2 yr deal of 1.8 mil, (850,000 for 2010 & 950,000 for 2011) would sign him IMO. Would you want a multi year deal or only a one year deal?

Glad to see Mitchell in Teal again this year

I forgot just how fast he was until I saw him in the playoffs last year. I think he will provide a great depth to the team that missed his presence last year.

Yes.

Torrey Mitchell re-signing brings much happiness to a slow day.

Nice to see Mitchell stay in teal for the next couple years

If for nothing else then the game winner against the Ducks I will always love him. Here’s hoping he stays in teal for ten+ years and develops into a dominant C that we all think he will be.
