The Fourth Period: Wild interested in Sykora, Cheechoo
"The Minnesota Wild wasn't able to sign Alex Tanguay, but that doesn't mean GM Chuck Fletcher doesn't have additional options.
Minneapolis Star-Tribune beat reporter Michael Russo recently reported on the paper's website that the Wild has spoken to the San Jose Sharks about veteran right wing Jonathan Cheechoo."
[TCY Update] Russo has confirmed this story on his Twitter feed, but Harding isn't involved. And I quote: "No doubt on Cheechoo, via sources. As for Harding, I think he'll be here awhile and I'm told he will play a lot more than he typically does"

So are we assuming this is true
I actually am. Weird.
Anyway, how likely is this now that it’s out. DW hates this stuff leaking.

Well, this would be like Pollak saying that the Sharks are interested in someone, so I do trust the source.

Speaking of Pollak
Mitchell isn’t the only new Shark with a new contract. Expect the news shortly that Brad Staubitz has signed a new one-year deal. That contract will pay him somewhere in the vicinity of $500,000.
Oh my Goc!!!
Nice dig.

Exactly
Very rarely has a beat writer steered me wrong without issuing some sort of an apology later. Even so, they are usually right.

If "Minnesota Nice" actually exists
DW: “Cheechoo for Josh Harding please!”
Chuck Fletcher: “Yah. You betcha.”
But seriously, who else on the Wild would the Sharks want/need?
Oh my Goc!!!
I’m thinking it would be another salary move, as in picks or prospects. However, I would think that that Sharks will be more likely to get value in return here, as we are no longer in a position of weakness.

It would be nice if it were an actual prospect. I get the feeling that the two that just arrived from Vancouver aren’t going to impress many of us, once we get a chance to see them. Although, I’m still sad to say that about White, him being from my hometown and all.

Well, White is a first rounder...
and it’s said he needs work but could turn if around. Even if he doesn’t we get Van’s 2nd pick, which i think is an ok “hedging of bets”. The scenario is diff this time, too.

I just read that in the other post. It does take away the sting. I’d like to think that most first round picks can be fixed with the right coaching. Isn’t that the idea that Vancouver had with Ehrhoff?

Ouch

Only thing is, Ehrhoff was a fourth rounder. Vancouver’s doomed!!!
Oh my Goc!!!
You Sharks bloggers had better start researching — I wonder who Minnesota’s 17th-best prospect is? :)

Could somebody at least inform DW that when he’s giving away talent, the Northwest Division isn’t in the eastern conference?
http://www.battleofcali.com/
heh
as long as he isn’t trading anyone to the Flames, I’m ok. But yeah, why all in conference? I don’t know. And I don’t plan to worry about it until we face former players for the first time.

Eastern Bias
Probably can’t get anyone in the east to bite on Cheechoo because they all think he is 3rd line filler. Guys out west at least know that he can score given the right opportunity and health and they realize that a 3rd liner who was recently a scoring champ on the President’s cup team could be a second liner on a whole bunch of other teams!
Here's to the second round!
You mean they play hockey in the West?

Wait, you mean there’s a West?

San Jose has a history of complete dominance over the Canucks, so its not that bad. The whole Wild thing might be because of Todd Richard’s experience coaching Cheechoo last year.
Anyways, like Gray said, the Flames are really the only team off-limits. Besides the entire Pacific Division of course, but that can go without saying.

Ehh, they have Tikhonov, who grew up in San Jose. I think that’s good enough.

If you were familiar with Cheechoo...
why would you want him?

His work ethic, locker room presence, and the idea that he could return to form if he ever gets healthy.
And because his value is at an all-time low, and so won’t cost much to get.

I was being sarchastic! I agree, though, he’s a bargain bin pickup with tons of upside…
Remember, I predicted he’d have a breakout year…

I’d actually love to see a stat head do some number crunching looking at the widespread belief against trades within conferences/divisions. I reflexively don’t like them, but we’re talking about a handful of games a year. I wonder if it really matters?
I think its really the idea of a player that you used to like and root for now playing on a team that you hate and root against.
That, plus ex-Sharks tend to score on the Sharks. Especially if they aren’t usually good at scoring. See: Selanne, Nolan, Gorges, Hannan, Rivet, etc.

Well, we should probably differentiate between “trades” and “salary dumps” — if it’s purely a hockey trade, then I’m with you — it doesn’t matter who the other team is.
But when you’re giving away players for relatively low roster cost, I think it makes a big difference about conference. In one scenario, you help a team that’s competing on the same standings board as you. In another scenario, you help a team that competes on a separate board.
I know there’s a definite point in time when the Ducks stopped getting free wins off the Coyotes, and it is round about the time when they found a present named Bryzgalov. That’s waivers, of course (less control of who got him), but the result was felt.
http://www.battleofcali.com/
Nope. Kessel is 1st line, all the way. He’s on of the best young players in the game.
Cheech, on the other hand, is probably destined for the 3rd line again if he stays here.

Who gets bumped down for Kessel then? Patty and Clowe, respectively? I think I could handle that, but could Ryane?
Jon Casey fan since '84
lets just get rid of michalek and put in kessel. anyone know how much money kessel is expected to be paid?
I’ve decided to try and stop predicting salaries, because I’ve been off every single time.
But I’d think it would be safe to say that Kessel would be around $4M or so. /Kessel signs for $3M

I was wondering earlier if the Sharks would have any interest in Sykora. I know he is old, and probably would not want to be a third liner, but he would add SIGNIFICANT depth to our third line. And the more I see posts like these, the sadder I am to see Cheech could be on his way out.
