Around SBN: MLB Trade Rumors: Edwin Jackson to the White Sox, DC next?

Heatley Gate: "It's simply not true," says Bryan Murray. Denials Across The Board.

[TCY Update 8:20] Dave Pollak: No deal has been done, and the Patty to NJ stuff? Not true, either.

[Plank Update 7:53]: On a side note- if you're Patty do you even want to play here? In 07-08 he was all over the board and had one of his worst seasons because of trade rumors. Now he's being left off season tickets, getting thrown into a humongous story just before training camp, getting stripped of the C... wow. If I'm me (which I am), do I want Patty to play here next year? His mental state is going to be questionable, and now you're risked alienating him in his upcoming contract negotiations next season. Maybe this whole fiasco cracked me, but it might be better just to move him and cut your losses before he cuts and runs. It has nothing to do with his play on the ice last year, and everything to do with his head this year. He's been dragged through the muck this entire offseason. Can he handle that? He couldn't two years ago.

[Plank Update 7:39]: I'm not calling anything just yet, but right now it looks like this might have been an exercise in futility.

[Plank Update 7:31]: Russo from The Trib- "Two of the nhl teams rumored in the Heatley deal haven't even talked in 2 1/2 weeks." [link]

[Plank Update 7:25]: Darren Dreger is reporting, "Sources say there is no Heatley deal and nothing is close at this point" [link].

[Plank Update 7:20]: Dean Lombardi to Rich Hammond of Inside The Kings: "Complete bull."

[Plank Update 7:16]: Remember that Heatley to the Oil broke as a done deal as well earlier this summer, before being denied because of him refusing to waive his NTC. There's a precedent here for jumping the gun in regards to a Heatley deal. Just saying I guess.

[Plank Update 7:11]: Mentioned this in the comments, but it bears repeating- the Kings lose big time in this deal IF it's true. Stoll and Frolov are solid players and cheap, and now you’re only guaranteed one year of Patty. Granted Lombardi may have some clout in a negotiation process considering he drafted Marleau and Patty may want to stay in California because of his kids and family, but there’s no guarantees in all this. I hate the potential of a Heatley deal from a salary cap and player depth standpoint, but he's a potential 60 goal guy as mentioned earlier this summer. TCY and I will have something more concrete up later tonight, regardless of whether or not this goes down.

[Plank Update 7:07]: All three teams are now denying Heatley report. On Twitter. Not exactly as solid as hearing it from Lombardi's mouth.

[Plank Update 6:51]: Waiting game says wait it out. Did Bucci swing for the fences and try to break the deal considering it has been the story of the summer? Or are both GM's denying the deal initially so they can inform their players? That doesn't make sense considering both guys had to waive their NTC's- then again, it's likely Heatley had San Jose on his short list and Marleau may have provided DW with one of his own as well.

[Plank Update 6:27]: Both Sharks GM Doug Wilson and Senators GM Bryan Murray denied the three-way trade when reached by ESPN.com. ESPN has also changed the title of the article to "Senators GM Murray Denies Deal" [link] I'm not sure this means anything just yet considering Buccigross doesn't seem like the type of guy to make things up out of thin air, but it's possible something hit a snag- Patty put his NTC to use? Who knows at this point. [H/T to Rated R Superstar for the heads up]

[Plank Update 5:55 PM]: Deal's done. Marleau to LA, Frolov and Stoll to the Sens. Lombardi gets back the player he drafted.

[TCY Update 5:42] According to a tweet by Buccigross that was immediately deleted, the Sharks will receive Heatley, the Kings will receive Marleau, and the Senators will receive Stoll and Frolov. Sounds an awful lot like the Garrioch rumor this morning.

H/T to CTGray for helping Plank and I out while our hands were tied. It was a crazy three way for a while there. A phone three way. Uh... here's the fanshot.

As you have probably seen, John Buccigross has tweeted that the Sharks and Ottawa will make a deal to send Heatley to the Sharks today or tomorrow.

[TCY Update 5:00] I've had a crazy day, and I was at the DMV when this broke. Plank is in Minnesota, and away from his computer. I have to go pick up Owen Nolan (the dog) from surgery (torn ACL). SO, needless to say, this didn't come at the best time.

Obviously, the situation has changed since we wrote our opinions on the subject, but here are Plank and my respective takes on the situation:

Plank: A New Frontier

TCY: Is Dany Heatley worth the headache?

I hate these rumors as much as the next, but Buccigross is about as credible as they get. I'll update next time I can.

This better not come true.

It was a joke when Malkin to the Kings reported it. Now, with John Buccigross (Whom I absolutely LOVE and think he is freaking awesome) reporting it, it seems credible.

Hmm

could this be the Marleau to the Kings trade? I know I said I didn’t think DW would trade him in-division, but as Ang always says, we just don’t know what he’s thinking.

Or perhaps that Marleau to the Devils nonsense Conico was talking about? Interesting to ponder, but I add my name to the list of those who don’t want Marleau traded (even though I wouldn’t mind seeing Heatley in teal).

But if he turns out to be the one to break this in any way/shape/form, it’ll be worse than discovering that there is no Santa Claus and that hockey has an off-season.

Oh No! a Consistant 40+ goal scorer might be coming to the Sharks...

Let’s all freak out about it! Honestly…

I love Marleau. He’s always been my favorite Shark (well, second fave once Roenick showed up). But I love the Sharks more than any individual player, and I honestly think Heatley does make this team better (definately on offense, maybe not so much on D, but we have a solid defensive team already). Also, you never know. Bucci never mentioned any other players…so maybe DW swung something without Marleau. I doubt it, but who knows.

It's not the numbers, or the non-backchecking

It’s the player, and the attitude that comes with it.

If hockey was all about numbers, I wouldn’t watch the games. Even if we literally traded a bag of pucks for Heatley, I’d still be upset because of who and what he is.

I’m freaking out because his attitude is not something this team needs, he has already demanded two trades in his relatively short career, it’ll fuck up our depth, and our future will be screwed what with all our free agents next summer and the cap going down. And for what? A guy that can score maybe 10 more goals than Marleau, and is much worse on defense? Please. It’s not worth it.

lol, come on. You guys are insane. What exactly is Heatley’s attitude? The first trade made sense after the accident with Snyder and it’s not like Atlanta got screwed in getting Hossa. Ottawa is a joke franchise, run by a terrible management that has taken a Stanley Cup finalist and brought in 4 or so coaches in the past two seasons that have taken them to a near lottery pick finish.

If Heatley wants to play for a winner, then fine, cause that’s what we are. Thonton and Heatley set up to be a monster combination with 50 goal potential. He’s not as defensively accountable, but really, who cares? I mean, he’s a top line forward who’s finally gonna get to play for a coach who demands a certain level of accountability on both ends (see Milan Michalek).

I don’t know about the rest of you but Im a little tired of making moves that are relatively risk free for the sake of two or three years down the road. If the Sharks are winners, then the roster will utlimately take care of itself (especially if we continue to draft the way we do). Elite wingers hardly ever come along and if we can get Heatley for Marleau straight up it’s a steal.

by Teas on Sep 10, 2009 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions

and for the record

I’ll take a Stanley Cup this year followed by years of not necessarily being an elite, but still good team, then a team that’s always full of promise because of our depth, but never gets over the hump because we lack enough elite players – and let’s be honest, Marleau has never been and I don’t think ever will be a truly elite player. He won’t be on the Canadian Olympic team where as Heatley still has a good shot and that says something to me.

Also, our defense this year is setting up to be more defensively accountable and perhaps less offensively influential so having a forward that scores more but maybe isn’t as much a two way player doesn’t seem to be as problematic to me. Let the offense handle the offense and the defense handle the defense first and then slot in players that can handle the other aspects as Mac sees fit.

Despite my man crush on Marleau

I’d admit that he’s always had more promise than delivery.

Yes, this team needs to go all out because the window is closing, FAST.

Your point is taken that elite-wingers only come by every so often. You can also MAKE them come by more often by having cap space to sign free agents.

Size + TERM + shrinking salary cap makes this gamble much less appealing in my eyes. If Heatley bombs, we are stuck for four more seasons, and we likely have to let Joe walk in 2 years, Nabby next year.

San Jose will never be in top position to bring in the best UFAs

It’s just a fact, and if we do we’ll always have to pay way more or offer longer contract then Eastern teams to land those guys – no matter how good we are we just don’t have the same kind of swagger as the more classic teams. 7.5m isn’t that bad and considering the length of contract the elite players are receiving these days, the length isn’t all that bad either.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Sep 10, 2009 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd like to think that will change

The team has historically been cheapskates, not spending to the ceiling.

Before Joe Thornton, the team was a middle of the pack team and a real far-flung outpost in the NHL. With Joe locked up, and some cap room made by dumping Ehrhoff and Lukowich, there’s potential for signings. Given the fact that Nabby comes of the books next season, and either Patty is allowed to walk or he renegotiates a discount, we’d have real potential to make a move and absorb contracts. Also, given all the pressure, I think management will spend to the ceiling now.

But, that’s all hypothetical. Until management ACTUALLY does this, and they can’t until next season, I’m talking out of my ass.

I just don’t think the location or kinda of attention hockey gets in this area is attractive to the more firey players. This isn’t a knock to the Tank cause the atmosphere is great, but some players definitely want a bit more celebrity then what San Jose can offer.

Heatley for Marleau straight up is Grand Larceny

For me, this isn’t about losing Patrick Marleau. If he no longer wears teal, I’ll cry into my corn flakes for about 5 minutes, then root against him every time we play him.

Heatley’s attitude is a worry as follows:

1. Guy wrecked a Ferrari at age, what, 20? He was facing CRIMINAL CHARGES, and the whole team, the management, AND THE FAMILY OF DAN SNYDER went to bat for him. He decided he just couldn’t stay in Atlanta.

2. Ottawa is a joke, yes. X number of coaches, blah blah blah. Bailing on them after 30 games under a new coach was really the last straw? A coach that was turning things around? Guy can’t take the pressure of having his coach call him out?

If there has been one thing consistently said about us, it’s that we fold under pressure.

THIS is who we want to help us fix that?

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Sep 10, 2009 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

His attitude? Well, he doesn’t want to backcheck, he wants more minutes, has had problems with his coaches, demanded a trade from Ottawa publicly and then cried about how the media was treating him, demanded said trade only a year after he signed a 5-year extension, and has just not been acting well in this entire situation.

And personally, I’d rather be good two-three years down the road instead of banking on winning next year, which is what Heatley would make this team do. Just because you have the best team doesn’t mean you win the Cup, and I’d much rather have really good odds for several years than great odds for one year and then bad odds for the rest.

$7.5M per year for five years, with the cap going down next year, a shit-ton of important free agents to re-sign, and barely any cap space? Yeah, that’s pretty huge.

We don't know it's going down or by how much

And we’d have three important free agents, and I think we’d be insane to resign Nabokov because of his age and he’ll demand a contract that’s way too long for a body that is clearly not the same as it once way.

If Pavelski and Setoguchi come out this year and both have monster years and we ultimately lose one of them we’ll manage. There will be other free agents and we’ll have money to work with so it won’t be the end of the road.

I just feel much more secure having Pavelski and Setoguchi – two guys who are loyal to the team and will take hometown discounts if the time comes – than having Heatley, for now and for the future.

I don't think we actually know the loyalty of either player

Not saying they aren’t, just saying that they haven’t actually done anything to prove the kind of loyalty you speak of. It’s also not necessarily a sure thing they’ll be willing to take home town discounts if another team comes along for a bigger pay day., I especially get that vibe from Seto for some reason. He’s a good player, but he has a bit of an attitude and at times seem to put himself a bit before the team when it came to work rate (now don’t go jumping on me about saying this, not saying he’s a bad teammate, just saying he played lazy at times and could be fairly invisible).

makes me cringe. no way he leaves San Jose

by Fear the 8 on Sep 10, 2009 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry mymclife, I usually agree with and defer to you, but

Heatley didn’t publicly demand a trade. I know you don’t like him or his attitude, but the guy requested a trade, and the front office made the request public on their own. He did not, to any of our knowledge, demand a trade, much less do it publicly.

by Chicago Shark on Sep 10, 2009 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

1. Heatley on Thornton’s wing is probably worth more like 20-25 more goals than Marleau, which is significant. Even 10 more goals is nothing to sneeze at, and I’d call that his floor.

2. Besides the request of this second trade (I’m going to throw out the first one because of the circumstances), what else do we have to go on that says he’ll be a clubhouse cancer? He didn’t want to be in Ottawa, and actually wants to be in San Jose. How many premier players can we say actually want to come to San Jose?

3. I understand the cap arguments, and yes, its a concern. But I also don’t presume to know more about the inner workings of San Jose’s cap and future plans than the front office. I have faith in DW to work everything out. With Marleau traded and Nabby off the books after next season, I’m sure DW can figure out a way to get everyone under cap we need to. No, I’m not going to do the math, I’m just going to have faith in our front office.

4. Trading Marleau and getting back Heatley does not screw up our depth. No minor leaguers or draft picks are headed out the door from what we’ve heard. If Marleau and a Couture and a 1st go out the door, then I’d be pissed. But losing Marleau and gaining Heatley does nothing to impact the depth of the club this year.

5. And like Teas alluded to as I was writing this: I want to see this team going all out to win it all this year. I think Heatley and Thornton would be a force to be reckoned with, and could definately help us get over the hump.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

Roenick, Grier and Marleau are gone…Heatley doesn’t strike me as a leader and we didn’t get any leadership back in the Ehrhoff/Luko trade. The FO must really be looking internally for leaders to step up. Big Joe, Lil Joe, Seto, Clowe, Boyle…these guys really need to take this team by the reigns.

I don't think Kessel will have to pray that offers show up.

He has come out and said, “[His] priority priority instead is to sign a free-agent offer sheet with one of the league’s 29 other teams.” Hence, he will be testing the free agent market, because he will not be fielding an offer from the Bruins. I get your hesitation to use the term “testing,” but you’re just arguing semantics. In that case, look at it this way: Kessel will be sitting in his house hoping that some team gives him an offer sheet.

Analyzed the possible cap hits for all 3 teams supposedly involved? I wouldn’t think that LA would be the ones to be dumping salary by getting rid of those 2 guys, and I can’t figure any other reason why the Sharks would be this desperate to dump Patty…. Dammit this sucks….

Marleau: 231GP, 89G, 108A, 197Pts, 84PIM

This trade wouldn’t make any sense because it’s not a three-way trade, it’s a trade between LA and Ottawa and then San Jose and LA. The Kings would have to trade Frolov and Stoll for Heatley and then trade Heatley for Marleau. Why wouldn’t they just trade for Heatley?

The West Coast is the Best Coast.

by RudyKelly on Sep 10, 2009 8:01 PM PDT reply actions

That’s a really good point Rudy. The only thing I can think of is Lombardi’s comments earlier this summer about Heatley not being a good fit for the Kings and the fact that he drafted Marleau.

Plank, regarding your update @ 7:11 above: I’m not so sure that the Kings would be such big losers of the trade scenario. Sure, Marleau is only under contract for one more season and then he’s a UFA, but you should consider that Frolov is only under contract for one more season, as well.

by DodgerBlueBalls on Sep 10, 2009 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s another good point- maybe Lombardi expects Frolov to walk and thinks he can resign Marleau to a deal? Probably the only way this turns out good for LA, because moving Frolov and Stoll for solely Marleau (especially if Lombardi can re-sign F&S) doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. You’re taking a huge risk by giving up guys who can be an excellent supporting cast for only one guaranteed year of Patty.

Fucking speculation man, this shit’s killing me.

Question for the smarter folk here

I know Heatley’s contract is burdensome, but couldn’t this be good for the Sharks long term? They trade one season of Marleau for six seasons of Heatley. I know this doesn’t take into account that Marleau is awesome and Heatley seems like a douche, but that seems like good business. Or is Heatley’s contract just too large?

Shrinking Salary Cap

Most long term solutions look at the fact that Patty and Nabby come off the books next season and Joe in two.

It COULD be good business, trading one contract for another, but if AND ONLY if Dany Heatley is what gets this team a Stanley Cup. Because, realistically, Heatley will cost us Pavs, Seto and Nabby.

Assuming Patty walks next season

Then yes, you’d love to get any sort of value for him. But again, there is only one number that counts in this equation. 16. The number of wins in the Spring. If Dany Heatley brought that, he’d be the best move ever made in the history of anything ever.

I’d like to think the value of Patty walking (let’s hope this doesn’t happen) is free cap space to sign younger guys and more flexibility with trades and free agents.

If you would want to bet lots of money that Marleau would be history after this year and jet out for greener pastures, but the general consensus of this board would be that they don’t want to put up with the thought if a disgruntled Heatley pulling the same shit he did this year with Ottawa with us next year… It’s all a crapshoot it sounds like… If the deal does go down, this might be DW’s version of the “Hail Mary” of the hockey world… But we shall see

Don’t say it “can’t”, cause then it will.

Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

Oh. My. God.

This day does keep getting weirder. Too bad it is almost over.

Patrick Marleau is still a member of the San Jose Sharks

Just thought I’d mention that

I still wouldn't be surprised to see Heatley as a Shark at some point...

…which, as I’ve said above when we thought it was going down, I think is a good trade. Obviously I’m in the minority, but I’d still like to see Heatley in teal. Of course, now that it hasn’t gone down, I’m still glad to have Marleau on the team. Its not a bad position to be in. If the trade goes through in some form as rumored, we get a top, elite goal scorer. If it does not go through, we keep an awesome two-way player. I don’t see how this is a bad thing.

Getting the news this happened while I was at a bar?

Yeah not the best timing there. And Bucci, really, you’re the only reason I bother visiting ESPN’s hockey page. Don’t make me rethink that. Here I was all ready to start breaking out the pitchforks and torches.

well, if Eklund posts it

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/No-Heatley-Deal/1/22892

.. then it must be the exact opposite, so expect the trade to happen tomorrow.

I’m interested to see where this goes, but I want an end to all this Heatley nonsense in one way or another tomorrow. Either the deal is going forward or he doesn’t suit up for the Sharks heading into the 09-10. This is a young team, with a relatively fragile mental state and every player needs to focus on their on-ice game from game 1 of the season to game 7 of the Finals.

As an outsider, I just have to say — today has been one hell of an amusing day. Way to keep this offseason interesting, Lieutenant Twitter.

As an insider

… I wish whatever happens will just happen so the team can focus on the season.

as long as Marleau remains a Shark, I’m happy

well thats the first thing i thought, i dont think the sharks are stupid enough to send a player like marleau to a team in their own division.
