Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Heatley Gate 2: Michalek, Cheechoo and a Second enough to grab Heatley (and a fifth)

H/T to Section223 for the initial fanshot, which I read while eating pancakes at Bills Cafe. I threw down my fork, and ran the 1/2 mile home in about 1:30.

This is the real deal, folks. Confirmed by WTCTSN, and the Sharks themselves.

God fucking damnit

While this deal doesn’t include Marleau (which I am very happy about), it does decrease our depth and fucks us in the ass as far as the future goes.

I didn’t want Heatley. I still don’t like him, even though he’s a Shark. I guess this is how Rudy felt when Smyth was traded to the Kings.

Really?

This is absolutely amazing. DW gets rid of the two worst contracts in the game and replaces it with one bad contract, but it’s for one of the best players in the game.

We also didn’t give up a first round pick, which is amazing.

All those guys actually play. They are overpaid no doubt, but the Caps were flat out benching Nylander for almost every game during the stretch run and playoffs. I’d rather get something out of 6 or 7 million than nothing from 4.5.

Redden, Drury, and Gomez were ranked as the top three worst contracts in the NHL. They play, but they’re not exactly the superstars they are paid like.

Ranked by who? Rangers fans? Bob Gainey jokes aside, someone actually traded for Gomz’s contract. I don’t think there’s a single GM that would trade anything for Nylander right now. All three of them are overpaid but they actually gave decent production. Gomez had 58 pts, Drury 56, Redden 26, and Nylander 33. Nylander also has a NMC so even if GMGM was able to find a GM willing to take on that contract, Nylander could (and I believe in almost all cases he would) veto it.

This is a fantastic trade

We get a proven 40 goal a year scorer and pair him up with one of the greatest playmakers in the league. We also get to keep Marleau as the #2 pivot. And all the while get rid of Cheechoo’s horrific contract where we’ve been getting 3rd line production for over 2 years now. And I’d much rather have Heatley than Kessel.

And who knows if he could even play the wing? I think the lines (right now) will look something like this…

Marleau-Thornton-Heatley
Clowe-Pavelski-Setoguchi
Hinote-Mitchell/Couture-McGinn
Ortmyer-Nichol-Shelly/Staubitz

No clue if that works cap wise… but DAMN.

Thats what I was thinking is all Cheech. That there is that AWESOME line, and you now have a line better than the Ducks #1.

Just that I always thought Cheechoo and Mihalek were pretty important. Cheechoo sure looked like a guy that bled Teal in that 1st round series.

Is Marleau safe now? You guys know your roster more than me, but with the C gone and all the rumours about him being in deals this summer, is he “cool” now? (just askin’?)

Definitely makes the Sharks a dangerous team though…and it only cost an extra 200, 000 grand.

So Wilson should be given props.

Boy, this discussion moved from the old thread REALLY fast

Here are some of the things I wrote that no one will read if I don’t migrate them.

All right, I’ve got a theory.
McLellan takes away the C from Marleau because he knows that he’s going to get Heatley eventually and that he wants a legitimate shot at earning it. Nothing like assuaging a possible diva by being really nice to him when he arrives.

I have heard that this will be an especially weak draft, so [a 5th rounder] probably isn’t much different from the 2nd rounder we gave up.

I just used capgeek and found we’re both under the cap now.

I don’t know about this last one. It puts payroll over $56.8M, but says we have cap room based on bonuses.

Heatley gets a bad rap I think. I mean Ottawa went from the Stanley Cup to the bottom of the league in only 2 years. Ottawa kept having to get rid of their D men every year because of cap problems and continued to go with crappy goaltending.

And the only reason he left Atlanta was because of the car crash thing.

Pretty much a straight swap in cap hit

Heatley’s 7.5m and Cheech is 3m and Milan is 4.333m. Both Cheech and Milan are under contract for two more season so at least until then it’s pretty much a wash as far as cap hits and resigning depth goes. Also, Milan’s contract is the same length as Heatley, so we really only gain 3.17 m a year in a cap hit – which, while not being nothing, isn’t a ton.

I can’t believe DW pulled this trade off, I’m very happy right now.

So, I leave for the weekend to the Ventana Mountains. But I get restless and drive to find Blackberry signal on the coast, check in with FTF, and here it is! Heatley is finally a Shark.

I don’t have to mention how pleased I am at Heatley being a Shark. I’ve been talking about it for the last two days. But I’m even more stoked at the trade itself. We get to keep Marleau, and we lost two players that most seemed to think we could afford to lose! I’ll miss Cheechoo and how happy he always looked after scoring a goal. And we kept our 1st rounder.AND, we kept Marleau! I find this to be a most desirable outcome.

Our first line is scary, now. Our second line is pretty lethal too. I think Setoguci will be more productive than Michalek was on Pavs’ wing. I’m super excited for this season to begin now.

Emotion wise, Cheech for Heatley? I want to vomit. Cheech is a hard worker, a great story, and has great goal celebrations. Heatley is Heatley.

This trade is probably good for the team. My hope is that the trade is good for Cheech, because he’s still Cheech, and gorramit, he deserves a return to success.

I think he bounces back

He’ll have (closer to) hometown support being in Ottawa. Spezza can be his new set-up man.

So Pavelski and Heatley were both Badgers? Nice. Is that the connection why Heatley put San Jose on the short list?

I’d bet Heater had his eyes on the SJS 1C, not the 2C.

DW Is The Man

I love this trade..Heatley is going to be totally motivated here and not under the scrutiny he was in Canada..This is the perfect spot for him and he knows it and will appreciate it here..

He and Thornton have played alot together in international tourneys..

Marleau we love you and will show it..So glad you didn’t get traded..

This is awesome, can’t wait for the season..Way to go DW, you are the man..

Very happy with this trade ,Cheech had 1 magical season and will have a good one this season , and Milan ….. well he was streaky .

Hahahaha

Fine time to fucking travel! Holy shit. I was positive DW would have to give up more to get Heatley.

I think this sets up some issues down the road with cap space but fuck it. This season is going to be ridiculous. Our blueline might be a little spotty at first (and we might be channeling the 06-07 Sens a bit with the whole CASH line) but there is no doubt Wilson took the Thenators to te cleanersh shere.

Roll the dice baby, let’s get it done.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

Okay, I admit, my initial reaction wasn’t the most positive in the world. I was just getting used to – and liking – the idea of the roster being pretty much set, and then two of the main-stays on the team get traded away for a guy that I’m not a big fan of (still irrational Sean Avery feeling in the pit of my stomach). Doesn’t really lend itself to a great feeling.

That said, Heatley is one of the elite goal-scorers out there, no matter how bulky his contract is. Him playing on Thornton’s wing does make my mouth water a bit; I somehow doubt that many defenses around the league can shut them down. And then with Seto on the other wing… Thornton might just reach 90+ assists again. Heatley will probably reach 50 goals. Seto might even flirt with 40.

The fact that a fifth was added in isn’t to be overlooked – the Sharks have history with drafted well in later rounds, and so I don’t see that much of a downgrade from a second to a fifth. I mean, its very likely that the fifth could get Elrich or Heemskerk. Worth it!

I will miss Cheechoo and Michalek. Cheechoo for his “never say die” attitude and his Rocket Richard season (and even his crappy skating). Michalek for his improving defense, high ceiling, and being one of the few Euros left on the team (seriously, now we just have the goalies as being from across the pond). Both were drafted by the Sharks, and both have contributed a lot to the squad.

But if this move somehow leads to one of Pavelski or Setoguchi walking, I will call for DW’s head.

Rejoice Joe

Thornton is creaming in his schnoogies right now..He has got to be the happiest guy besides DW about this deal..He might get 100 assists this year and Heatley will score 60..How awesome will our powerplay be now..Heatley is 6’4" 220, he is big, will also kill penalties and remember the main reason why he wanted to leave Ottawa was they weren’t playing him on special teams anymore..

He is not just a goal scorer, which a lot of people don’t realize and Danny considers himself an all around player, not just a scorer..

I doubt the will play all three stars together..I would assume that Patty will center the second line with Seto
and Pav’s..I would put Clowe with the first line, for some
physicality..

We have lots of options now..Can’t wait to see Joe feeding
Heater from behind the net..

This is awesome!!!!!!

Danny considers himself an all around player, not just a scorer.

I don’t see how that’s relevant. Heater has shown that he’s more than a little detached from reality. His defensive play has always been an issue, and he thought he was a leader on OTT. I’m not sure I put any stock in his own self-evaluation.

Speaking of being a leader in Ottawa…

What is the over/under on him wearing an “A” or god forbid the “C” this year?

by Evilducks on Sep 12, 2009 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not nearly as up on the Sharks as you all are but I have to say it’s extremely unlikely that he gets the C. Maybe he’ll get an A but I doubt it. You rarely see guys come to new teams and immediately get a letter, and those are usually established veterans that didn’t demand a trade.

His first three years in Ottawa: +29, +31, and +33. That doesn’t sound like a defensive issue to me.

Those teams also scored a ton of goals. Plus/Minus is hard to read into. Everywhere he’s gone I’ve heard complaints about his defensive awareness/effort so I tend to think there is something there.

Well, it sounds like he makes up for mistakes. That’s a change. Some of the former Sharks were likely let go because they didn’t have the skill to do that.

The Sharks were rated tenth among all of the teams at nhl.com..They really had us down in the rankings..I wonder what the Sharks ranking will be after this trade..

It will be interesting to see how others perceive this deal..

Now we are right there with the best after this deal..

I reckon this frees up guys to be themselves…joe can pass etc. Team Teal has needed guys to do more; you know, play outside their comfort zones…now it seems they are set up to play to the individual strengths of the players.

Here's to the second round!

Damn

Well, what’s done is done, I guess. I just hope DW fits Heatley with a shock collar for whenever he acts out again.

…then again, I had these same reservations for when Roenick signed two years ago, and look how that turned out.

Nice Trade

I admittedly am a Hawks fan but I really love the trade for the Sharks. The Sharks are going to be a team to reckon with this season. Best of luck.
