Doug Wilson does it again, Dany Heatley is a Shark
The title may be a little misleading, because I've lost a good amount of faith in out GM over this past offseason.
All that faith, however, is back.
As of Saturday, September 12th, Dany Heatley is a member of the San Jose Sharks.
As of Saturday, September 12th, the Sharks are about $500,000 under the NHL salary cap.
As of Saturday, September 12th, the Sharks look like the best team in hockey.
The Dany Heatley deal solves a multitude of problems for San Jose, and makes them arguably the most dangerous team in all of hockey. For the first time this offseason, I feel like the Sharks will be better than they were last year.
This trade is on par with the deal that brought Joe Thornton to San Jose in 2005. That deal, which sent Brad Stuart, Marco Sturm, and Wayne Primeau to Boston, was applauded by hockey pundits everywhere. It changed the Sharks from a young team on the cusp to a Stanley Cup contender.
When you look at this deal, you have to add in the Vancouver swap as well, because that's practically the first step. This is what you get:
Sharks send Ehrhoff, Cheechoo, Michalek and a second, receive Heatley, Rahimi, White, and a fifth. That's a steal any way you slice it.
The deals (Thornton and Heatley) are eerily similar. The Sharks lost a young defenseman with upside, a winger with injury history and a little promise, and some salary cap filler. In return, they got one of the NHL's elite players. Sweet.
I'm going to go out on a limb, though, and say that this trade was better for the Sharks than even the Thornton trade. Granted, I love Joe and I think he's a better player (he was also younger when the deal went down), but this deal helps the Sharks in so many ways it's amazing.
First, the Sharks add one of the most talented players in the league, arguably top five at his position. Yes, he's had some personal issues in the past and was only traded because of a very public trade request for unknown reasons. However, he makes the Sharks first line the most dangerous in hockey. Since the lockout, he's scored 362 points, 180 of them goals. We've gone into this countless time before, but, uh... Dany Heatley is good.
Second, although Heatley's contract is pretty huge ($7.5 MM cap hit), the value is much higher than what the Sharks gave up to get him. Michalek ($4.33MM cap hit) was second line winger who underwhelmed and underperformed compared to his contract. Cheechoo ($3.5MM cap hit), although he scored 56 goals in his Rocket Richard winning season, plummeted into a third line role after injuries, diminishing skill, and an ever changing NHL led to an extreme decrease in value.
Third, this deal actually helps the Sharks cap situation. Although Heatley comes at a big hit to the cap (the Sharks are now spending 13% of their cap space on Heatley and 37% on their first line), the Sharks shed their two worst contracts in the trade. Now, with an Olympic level first line, they can probably persuade Marleau to take a contract at a lesser value, resign Setoguchi and Pavelski, and add some free agent help next offseason simply by letting Nabokov and Blake walk. You have to remember, both Pavelski and Setoguchi are RFA's, and judging by what happened this offseason (Kessel and Dubinsky come to mind), no team is going to swoop in and try to offer a huge contract. So I'm guessing those two are pretty safe. That's a crude analysis, but let's just say this... the Sharks cap situation is no worse today than it was last night.
Fourth, as stuffilife just reminded me, this trade all but guarantees that Joe Thornton will have another monster year. After posting more than 100 points in both seasons with the Sharks (33 points in the first season came with Boston), Joe's production dipped to 96 in 2007-2008 and 86 in 2008-2009. The addition of a proven finisher like Heatley with the retention of Marleau on the other wing makes Joe Thornton almost a lock for 80+ assists.
Here's another reason why I like this trade: Doug Wilson added Stanley Cup experience without adding someone who already had a ring. Although this may sound odd, I'd rather have a guy like Heatley who got the final but couldn't finish as opposed to a guy like Blake who has already won. Heatley is going to have a monster season this year: he's gotten his trade, he's with the best team in the league, and he's going to have to prove his critics wrong. That's a recipe for success.
I'm also really surprised that this got done without having a first round pick included in the deal. That might be one of the things that makes this trade so amazing. After losing first round picks the last few years, the Sharks development system has few forwards (outside of Couture and McGinn and now Varone and Ferriero) with any real promise. Keeping the first round pick is huge here.
All in all, this trade makes the Sharks the front runners to win the Stanley Cup. Experts may have picked them to win last year, but in my opinion, this team is the undoubted favorite to win the Pacific Division, the Western Conference, and the Stanley Cup. It's a better team than last years team, period.
Yes, I'm going to miss the guys we lost. Any Sharks fan would. But we've still got Marleau. We still have all our young stars (sans Michalek). We're about to see the best team that San Jose has ever iced.
I can't wait for hockey season to start.

Seriously
I kept hearing “Michalek, Cheechoo, and a first/Couture.” Can’t believe it was a second, especially for such a weak draft.
So, basically, we found out this off-season that Wilson overpays low-level free agents, gets ripped off dealing mid-level players, and always rips off the other guy when trading for those big-name guys. Seriously, between Thornton, Boyle, and now Heatley, he should go down as the biggest talent thief in GM history.

“I hate it here. The coaches are terrible and they don’t even play me on the power play. I’m going to demand a trade”
“I haven’t gotten any minutes yet”, Heatley added. “It’s like the season hasn’t even started”.

I couldn’t have said it better..This is an awesome trade and no one will benefit more than Joe will..100 assists in back in the cards with Heater on his wing..
I saw a lot of Heater when he was in Atlanta and the fans here don’t realize that he is 6’4" 220 and an all around player, not just a sniper..
The fans will love Heater and he is in the perfect place, where he isn’t under the scrutiny he was in Canada..

However, he makes the Sharks first line the most dangerous in hockey.
Maybe, but it depends on whether the Sharks keep Marleau on the first line or slide him to the second line, and how other teams set up their top lines. The lines that could challenge this are:
AO/Backstrom/Knuble on the Caps.
Hank/Datsyuk/Holmstrom on DET if they play them together.
Perry/Getzlaf/Ryan if ANA keeps them together.
Kane/Toews/Hossa if that’s how CHI plays it.

Just saw this on the Sharks website:
In three trips to the postseason, Heatley has posted 35 points (10-25=35) in 34 games. He appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006-07 and was tied for the postseason lead with 22 points (7-15=22).
Didn’t realize how solid he was in the postseason. All the Yahoo boards are bitterly saying we added another playoff choke artist, but I think these numbers are great. I think this little tidbit makes me a little more optimistic for the postseason.
It all makes sense now!

I was looking up his stats and noticed that he besides last year, which was a fluke, at least points-wise, he has consistently been about a +30 for the season.
Jon Casey fan since '84
+/- doesn't mean anything.
It’s just like RBI’s to me in baseball. So many people believe in it, when it’s oh so wrong.
Having a high or low is out of your control. Generally players on good teams have a high +/- and players on bad teams have a lower +/-.
Yeah, but
look at Ott the last couple seasons…not very good teams, yet still good +/- for Heatley (except last season when his production dropped compared to previous levels)
by Chicago Shark on Sep 12, 2009 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions
Well until last year OTT was very good. In 07-08 they made the playoffs but the tailspin began. Last year was their only real crappy year, and Heatley’s numbers were crappy.

by Chicago Shark on Sep 12, 2009 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions
07-08 probably seemed like two seasons to you. They came out of the gates hot as balls (IIRC set an NHL record through 25 games or something) and then sucked for the rest of the season. They had so many early points that they still only fell to 7th in the East and got dismantled by PIT in the first round. 08-09 they just sucked.

If you compare a player’s +/- to his own teammates, then I think its a more accurate metric to rate his defensive play. Like, Ehrhoff’s was -12, on a team filled with + guys. That’s doesn’t say good things about his defense. Likewise, if a guy has a +30 on a team filled with guys around +10, then you know that he scores a shitton of goals.

Odds are, you probably will have something to do with it
Five skaters on the ice, usually 3 credited with a given goal, even those other two help with their positioning, their puck movement before the two assists, blocked shots leading to a breakout, etc.
by Chicago Shark on Sep 12, 2009 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions
But on the flip side,
it doesn’t really help on judging who’s good defensively. The stat is easily inflated or deflated. Patrick Marleau who’s known for being a two-way player, in theory should have a high +/- but he doesn’t. He’s a +16, no where close to the leaders.
This quote from Alexei Kovalev tells part of the story:
“What can I say about (plus/minus)?” Montreal forward Alexei Kovalev once said to ESPN.com. “If I make a good play and we don’t score, then one of our other players makes a mistake and the other team scores, I get a minus.”
Here’s James Mirtle’s take on the stat.
I hear ya
I don’t particularly care for the stat, but scoring in the NHL is usually a team endeavor
by Chicago Shark on Sep 12, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions
oh
I thought you were going for the stat. My reading comprehension is all messed up today, probably because I’ve been reading all this Heatley stuff.
I know that scoring is a team thing, but what I meant was +/- doesn’t display that properly.
But to have that big of discrepancies between players would mean that the stat has some merit.

I agree with this. When you compare against the stat is controlled for competition. You know he played the same teams as everyone else on that list so if he’s significantly better or worse it tells you something about what he’s doing.

What I'm wondering is..
which 2nd draft pick did we give up? Ours or the one we got from Canucks in Error’s trade? Might not make a difference if both teams go deep in playoffs, but if Canucks sink, 10-15 spots do make a difference.
We didn't get a pick from Vancouver
The pick we get if we don’t sign White is an “extra” pick generated by the NHL I think. So I believe we would have 2 Sharks 2nd round picks…
We probably gave up our pick.
Oh, and BTW, we also have a second round pick from Buffalo in the Rivet trade. So no matter what happens with White, the Sharks have a second round pick.
And the White pick is compensatory if White doesn’t sign, and would 55th overall in the draft. Just to clear up any confusion here.
