I’m looking forward to being at the game tomorrow night too. Should be fun to see Ehrhoff and Luko, as well as finally seeing the boys out on the ice (wasn’t at teal and white). It’s finally starting to feel like Sharks Season (which is my Christmas).

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

THIS THREAD MAKES ME SO HAPPY

I was watching an Islanders-Oilers preseason game yesterday, that’s how much I want hockey to start.

Tavares looked pretty decent out there, btw. Not an overwhelming force on the ice, but it just seemed like he was involved in every play. Also, the Oilers won 3-2.

Geez, I can’t wait to actually follow Sharks hockey.

Having watched Tavares a lot as a Junior, he doesn’t dazzle, he doesn’t fly down the wings or score from his back, he just scores, he stands there and ba-bing the puck goes in the net. Think of a taller, thinner Phil Esposito. His value will be on the PP, he will rack up an amazing number of points.

Did I read WTC incorrectly, or is Heatley meeting up with the team at the game?

Heatley is arriving in SJ today, while the Sharks are in Ontario.* So yeah, you read WTC incorrectly ;)

*I know its Ontario, California, but I still find it amazingly funny that Heatley just left Ontario, CAN to San Jose, and the Sharks left San Jose to Ontario, CA.

8:42 –First tussle of the night, though it didn’t look as if any punches were thrown. Staubitz and LA’s Ivanans wanted to go, but ended up wrestling instead. The larger Ivanans ended up as the second guy down as they tumbled to the ice. Still, they called it a fight with Staubitz off for five minutes and Ivanans getting the 2-5-10 for instigating at 10:37

What was a good sign about tonight was that Quick is LA’s #1 netminder, and Greiss completely outplayed him. I’m definitely feeling pretty confident about our goalies going into the season.

that Toronto is the biggest market in the NHL, and they’ve set a record for consecutive non-playoff seasons. I think part of it may have been to show the fanbase they’re serious about improving, and another part may have been to keep Kessel’s interest.

Well, they have the picks to give, after a couple of lottery years (or fringe), and they have been rebuilding for a while, and they have the money to spend, but I just don’t think I’d want to put that many of my assets into one player that isn’t exactly proven.

Of course, I’ve been scolded for the same type of comments about Devin Setoguchi.

this is kind of a headscratcher

but say what you will about the man, but Brian Burke seems to win out in the end more often than not.
TOR is pretty starved for proven offense – he’d look pretty dumb if after all the work on rebuilding his blueline was all for naught, but his team still lost b/c it couldn’t score goals.

But now Boston is really stacked with a lot of chess pieces for the next 2 years.

No boos from Christian but no love either

I liked Ehrhoff but Im not sorry to see him go, He looks like he’ll help Vancouver but I still think he’s ‘the’ answer for any team. The Sharks’ play in their own end was so passive anyone could’ve scored. I don’t have long term concerns but everyone was just slow and rarely sloppy – Hinote’s goal wasn’t fantastic and McGinn’s was good, but Marleau looked like he was having a little trouble controlling the puck.

It was hot and the ice kinda sucked, it’s hard to watch a ean that’s suppose to be built on speed play in a constant slush. Pucks were dying in the neutral zone boards on little ice hills. It’s not the end of the world, but I hope it’s a cold Mau and June in San Jose.

Just got home from the Tank.

First, Griess looked awful. The defense didn’t do him any favors, but he still looked tentative, like he was fighting the puck a bit. He had a pretty slow glove, and he seemed really really hesitant to go out and play the puck. Stalock looked much more comfortable in net. I really liked what I saw in the period and a half he was in.

Next, the D needed to do better clearing out the front of the net. The Canucks were parking there and no one was moving them out or even putting much of a body on them.

Finally, it was nice to see some life from the team after a very lacklucter first half of the game. It was like something clicked when Stalock went in. Sharks started winning races to the pucks, winning battles in the corner, etc. I wanna see that all the time. Especially from people trying to make this team!

McGinn looked good. Marleau looked good. Stalock looked good. McLaren owned some fool. All in all it was still an entertaining game to be at, and awesome to be back in the Tank for some Sharks hockey.

Luckily, its just preseason. This doesn’t mean anything. But if they pull this shit on the 8th…dude, no.

As was mentioned above, Greiss looked bad. Same as T&W. I’m not even going to get into it, just flat out depressing.

Huskins looked bad. Wasn’t clearing anybody out in front of the net, screened Greiss on the first goal, was a part of the third goal because he let a Nuck’ basically sit on Greiss, inexplicably went out to challenge a forward on the sidewall who had just made a pass to the point man. That was on the power play, and the blueliner ripped it home (think it was Ehrhoff but don’t quote me). He really stuck out like a sore thumb tonight- TCY and I were bitching about him like the catty twentysomethings we are, and Teas mentioned the same thing when we met up at the second intermission.

Thought Dandenault actually looked respectable as a forward (quick north-south skater), but if he makes the team as a defenseman I’m going to have nightmares about the quality of our blueline. Petrecki didn’t look all that good either, some trouble hitting breakout passes and didn’t really line anybody up. Vlasic stunk. Hell, everybody kind of stunk. You don’t lose 6-2 by playing a good game.

I’m just rambling now. That’s okay right? It was good to meet Teas and see Gray & Ang again of course, and I’m bummed out we didn’t get to share some beers- having a sinus infection kind of rules that out. Speaking of which I should probably get some sleep. Meds are making me drowsy. Kicked my mom’s butt at Sequence though.

Met Randy with TCY before the game- said he’d gladly do another interview, so I’ll probably set that up for the season preview. Anything anyone wants to ask about the upcoming season? I’ve got a couple questions, but feel free to leave anything you have as a reply or whatever. Hopefully this comment is buried deep enough down in the Fanpost section where it doesn’t get too much attention, but I think it would be funny to ask if he and DW go the same tanning salon. Dude could be mistaken for a burnt sienna Crayola. That’s funny as hell. Because it’s true. Great guy though, don’t get me wrong. I’m not a dick.

TCY and I also saw Luko sitting with Mafia member Roberto Luongo and some other scratched Nucks. Went up to him and shook his hand, wished him good luck next year. Didn’t want to bother him because he was with his money so managed to keep it brief. His little daughter (cute as a button) smiled at me. Gotta love the kids. His wife is beautiful too, lucky guy. Hope he has a better year with Vancouver than he did with San Jose. I’ll let TCY tell his portion of the Luko story cause it’s pretty funny.

Patty’s pass to McGinn was beautiful, well worth the price of admission. Just a goddamn great hockey play not much more you can say. I loved watching Frazer McLaren because he really has trouble skating and doesn’t have good hands at all- my soft spot is for the big clumsy guys apparently. Semenov I miss ya! Hinote seems like a stretch to make the team, but TCY thinks otherwise (I believe he does, I may have changed his mind- didn’t talk about him that in depth really). As for all the fights, never been a big fan of the team getting blown out dropping the gloves with that much regularity- don’t really see the use in it. If the Sharks start running guys (they didn’t) then I see why Vancouver would retaliate with some fisticuffs, but it seems like San Jose initiated most of the scraps. Not a big fan, but whatevs.

Anyways, McGinn and Patty had a solid game, blueline looked bleh (kind of worried about Blake losing a step here) Pavs looked okay, Clowe was meh. You know what bothers me about Clowe is that whenever he receives a pass at the redline he stops moving his feet and always looks for the cross ice pass. When opposing teams backcheck down the middle (fucking hockey 101) he has to force a feed and the rush hits the skids. Not a good north-south skater that Ryane fellow. Still love him though, and he did a better job of getting to the front tonight. Still not with the regularity I expect, but it was better than T&W. I actually made a comment to TCY about a possible reason he hasn’t been driving the net as hard- injury history, and the fact that he probably played with some bumps and bruises last season considering he was injured so much. Just a thought to chew on. Don’t know if I’m really all that confident in the validity of it, but I think it’s possible.

You could tell Vancouver was really in their system, while San Jose’s young guys were having trouble getting acclimated. Not skating hard through the neutral zone and consequently they weren’t hitting the blueline with any speed. Whatevs. Sorry for rambling.

All in all, I bet the Sharks go 0-82 this year. Totally giving up on this team ;)

Go Sharks.

Also, here’s a comment from before via mobile. Just thought I’d throw it in here so all my thoughts are in one place:

Go mobile commenting! First goal Huskins ran a little screen on Greiss second goal was a weak five hole from the far edge of the circles and the third goal was due to greiss overcommiting and Huskins not taking away the centering pass he left his man in front of the net nearly all pp long sorry for the lack of periods and commas but I’m getting used to the phone shelley crunched error behind the net I swear they may still be cleaning him off the glass

Apparently another one of my comments didn’t go through, but it was after Greiss’ fifth goal- thought it wasn’t a good idea to leave him in considering he’s a young goaltender and was getting heckled quite a bit. McLellan may have made up for it though, by subbing Stalock in during a TV timeout- kind of lessens the severity of it. I don’t know much about coaching hockey, but it seems like that might be a better route to take- thoughts? Your answers are much appreciated.

Also, the Sedins run crazy picks in front of the net/near the circles. I wish the refs would call interference, but I’d probably be pissed if the Sharks got called for interference on that so what do I know.

we have a lot of players to choose from this year, and everybody needs some preseason time. this is why the sedins played last night. another advantage to getting our vets out there is to see how younger players do when put on a line with them (shirokov did very well with the sedins last night).

I don’t think anyone at the game (including the refs) knows what happened. If it was only a game misconduct because he was 3rd man in, why did Fiddler get the boot, too? I would have liked to see him more than 6 minutes, especially when he was put out there on the starting lineup, as Boyle’s partner!

By the way, Fiddler looked to be in a lot of pain when he limped off after the fight. Petrecki messed him up!

Heatley has had two really nice passes off the rush and Murray has lit up his usual share of forwards. More after the game depending on the post game festivities.

so who stepped up as a leader today? and who was at fault for the goals?

by a10dency2ask on Sep 19, 2009 10:18 PM PDT reply actions

Purely based on points, the captaincy ranking would go: Patty, Boyle, and then a 10-way tie for third. Patty over Boyle because goals are a bit more impressive than assists. Also, he got the GWG in OT. That counts for like, two goals.

Yeah, Sharks win!

BTW, my part of the Luko story.

He was super nice, shook my hand but kinda got the fingers only shake going. He crushed my scrawny little fingers, man has hands like a steel trap.

However, as I was saying how great it was to watch him help win a Presidents Trophy with the team, it got weird. Somewhere mid sentence, I think he saw my button (FTF), and realized we were the douches that wanted him traded. Well, he didn’t seem too happy after that.

It might be all in my head, but it was funny.

Really classy tonight

He was the first person shown in the lineup and he got a really nice round of applause. Also, about halfway through the first period (memory sucks, so forgive me if I’m wrong), they showed him on the scoreboard and his stats from last year. He got another round of applause. You could notice him looking up at the jumbotron and gave out a little smile. It was nice, I’ve never been more proud to be a Sharks fan!

Abbreviated recap from the tank tonight

Pavelski was out there all night barking at people and directing the PK. Murray was flying around destroying people and pulling some of the young d-men aside and giving them pointers. Jumbo was Jumbo, when Staubitz I think it was, missed a pinch during a puck rim into the zone by Phoenix, Joe was letting him have it when they got back to the bench. Boyle played a TON of minutes tonight, I’m too lazy to look @ the box scores to see exactly how many, but it seemed like he was on the ice during every change. Nichol looked awesome, he was hauling ass through neutral zone on the breakout passes and was awesome on the PK. -Personal Highlight of the Night- During a stoppage face off right in front of where we were sitting, during the face off scrum the linesman that dropped the puck caught an end of a stick to the throat by a Phoenix player…. LOL…. He was attended to by the sharks trainers and finished the rest of the game. Perhaps a bit of karma for last year…. Anyways, that’s about all I can remember. Thanks to Plank and Perkins for the after game festivities and Ang for takin the extra ticket. Nite y’all

It was better than the time someone pulled the alarm when I just sat down for dinner at the cafeteria. We had to leave our food there. It took an hour before we could go back, and then as soon as we got our food again, the fire alarm went off again. But nobody evacuated the second time, because we were too hungry.

I was an RA in college for 7 semesters, trying to get out without student loans. One morning, I got up to go to class, and everyone I walked with was REALLY groggy. it's a fact, not just superstition:

Selanne has scored 45 goals against San Jose, more than he has scored against any other NHL team. Imagine what the total would be if he had never played for us …

(For the record he has more points against the Kings, but we’re in second)

teams in the same division

we play each other more often than we play other teams

but logical would dictate he could have or would have scored more against the other teams in the division, considering he played for us

furthermore, he is coming in at an astounding 0.968 ppg during Sharks wins (426/440) with a 0.41 in losses and a 0.48 in ties (147/354 and 37/77)

I've only done baseball,

but that’s a bigger roster and it takes around 2 hours. That was with 12 people, though. Probably about the same – but I bet you can autodraft the tail end if you have to go.

Jon Casey fan since '84

by stufflife on Sep 22, 2009 5:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Are you in the first league?

Because in that league there are 20 people and that should take a good amount of time. I’d say about an hour or so depending on how long people take to draft. Not exactly 100% sure though. You could try a mock draft and see how long that takes. You get to the mock draft by going to the “draft central”

by idunno723 on Sep 22, 2009 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, I’m in the first league. I haven’t done too many fantasy sports leagues but I thought I remembered a friend doing one where you could set up a list of players you wanted and the best one available would be drafted automatically – is that what stufflife was referring to?

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Sep 22, 2009 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup you could do that.

Go to “pre-draft rankings” and set up a list of players. Let it be known that auto-draft can screw with you. Okay maybe I’m just a little bitter that auto-draft drafted Alex Smith as my QB last year.

by idunno723 on Sep 22, 2009 8:44 PM PDT reply actions

Especially

since the Giants finally realized that they suck and are trying their hardest to NOT make the playoffs. I know I should be happy that they’re over .500, but they were so close to the postseason. There are some games for them to tun it around, but the way they’re playing compared to how Colorado is playing, it doesn’t look good.
