FA's I think the Sharks should target

First I want to say this is my first fanpost here, (I post at AN). I have noticed that although there are a lot of fanposts about single FA's there is not a single post, (that I have seen) that show the top UFA's/FA's we think the Sharks should be targeting now. Here is a list of some of the FA's I think the Sharks should take a look at. I will link all players to CapGeek and will also use NHL's Free agent list. Please feel free to add names I might have missed or rip me for FA's you think are crap. Oh, and yes I did just bring up most of these names here.

Star-divide

Forwards

F Manny Malhotra (CLB) I would like to have this guy on our team. He is 29 and put up 11 G,24 A, 28 PIM in 77 Games, (I will stick with this format).

F Dominic Moore (BUF) Here's a guy who put up his best numbers last year. He is 29 and had 12, 29, 69 in 63.

F Michel Ouellet (VAN) This guy is younger at 27 and played last year in the AHL with the Moose of Manitoba. In 07/08 he had 17, 19, 12 in 64.

F Brett McLean (FLA) McLean had a down year but the previous two years averaged 35 points. Last year the 31 year old posted 7, 12, 29 in 80.

F Peter Schaefer (BOS) A lot of people, (including me) thought he would be the next offensive superstar for OTT a couple years ago. He is 32 and played in the AHL last year. He put up 9, 17, 18 in 63 in 07/08 for BOS.

F Eric Perrin (ATL) If we only could sign one more FA I would want it to be this guy. In 78 games he had 7, 16, 36 for the 33 year old last year. The previous two years he had 36 and 45 points respectively.

F Derek Armstrong (LAK) The oldest guy on this list at 36 had a disappointing season last year points wise. Hitting is another matter entirely, (I would love to see him and Cranksaft on the same shift). He posted 5, 4, 63 in 56 but has averaged 40 points the three years before.

Defense men, (a much shorter list)

D Martin Skoula (MIN) One of only three D'men I will list as sadly Alexei did not make the cut. Martin is 29 and had 4, 12 ,10 in 81.

D Marc-Andre Bergeron (MIN) The better MIN D'man who could take over for Ehrorr on the PP. The 28 year old posted 14, 18, 30 in 72.

D Dennis Seidenberg (CAR) I saved the best for last as Dennis is my favorite FA D'man. He is 28 and doubled his previous years point total with a line of 5, 25, 37 in 70.

In a perfect world we would move Cheech for Josh Harding and be able to sign 3 or 4 of these guys to fill out our roster. I would be happy if we signed 2 of them and ecstatic if we signed 3. My top five would be from first to fifth Seidenberg, Perrin, M A Bergeron, Armstrong and Ouellet. Let me know what you think.

Well, I guess that it doesn’t really matter, since I think it’s unlikely that we move to sign an FA. The team you see is most likely the team you are going to get, barring a trade.

UFA’s usually avoid SJ like the plague, and although i think the economy and other teams lack of cap make our city more attractive, it’s going to be tough to lure any significant UFA’s to the bay.

How sad is it that FA's would rather go to LA than SJ?

We almost had Scotty way back when, but his shit brother Rob ruined that. I wouldn’t say any of those teams have had an especially long list of marquee free agents in their mid-late twenties signing big contracts though, at least post-lockout. Lots of building through the draft and via trade.

Silver lining? Edmonton can’t nab a UFA or get it done via trade. And that’s a franchise with some history.

Show me the money!

In the past, the Sharks have had a history of spending below the cap, correct?

I think that’s why UFAs usually didn’t sign with us. We just didn’t offer the coin other teams did (see: Campbell, Brian). In more recent history, the Sharks are a contender, which is at least moderately attractive. And given the pressure on the team to win, the purse strings seem to be a bit more free. Day 1 of Free Agency was never going to be a go for us with the cap. If we get Joe, Patty and Nabby signed to smaller contracts in the next 2 years as their current monsters come off the books, I think we’ll see more UFAs being signed. Maybe not the big ones, but certainly splashy ones.

Nice work adragon. I’m a big fan of Malhotra and his defensive prowess, but the issue with him is that he’s a center and we already signed Nichol/Mitchell to work down the middle.

Anyone over 32/33 I think we should avoid as well, unless they’re a top-six talent. On the downswing of their careers, injury prone, putting off the future etc.

Other than that, can’t say I feel strongly either way. You’re ruffling through the bargain bin at this point and there’s not going to be a whole lot of surprises.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

by Mr. Plank on Sep 3, 2009 12:31 AM PDT reply actions

Speaking of the bargain bin I stopped at three D-men because the next one on the list was Alexei...lol

I agree with you that because center is our biggest strength we will probably not sign Malhotra. The one guy I think would be a steal is Perrin. If we could sign him for $750,000, (what he made last year with ATL) or even cheaper as he had a down year I think he could put up some very good #‘s. I think he gives you the most bang for the buck as far as what he will put on the board vrs. his cap hit. Of all the FA’s on this list he is the one most likely to sign for under 1 mil.

The Notorios MAB would be a good signing...

If the Sharks didn’t feel comfortable with their younger guys. However, I really do believe DW is going to give one of Joslin, Moore, Demers, or Petrecki a chance to succeed and take big minutes.

But you do have a weakness from the back end if you choose anyone but Joslin or Demers, since the two others are pureley defensive D Men. Even still, in a system such as McLellan’s where so much offense is generated through shots from the point, I don’t know if you trust Demers or Joslin to bring that for you.

MAB would be a perfect fit for McLellan’s system, and I think he would have been a realistic target if Blake wasn’t re signed so early. He’s pretty much a poor man’s Dan Boyle, though, so I don’t know if having both of them together would be smart.

Moral of the story, while I think that MAB would be nice to have, I’d rather save a little coin and let the young guys handle it.

Doesn't Matter, The Choking Dogs Are Still On The Team

The choking dog Sharks are who they are..DW and his band of losers are on schedule for another good regular season and a playoff season of letting everyone down again..DW just doesn’t get it..These core players just don’t have the intestinal fortitude or fire to step their game up in the playoffs..Until Thornton and Nabokov or gone, this team will never ever do anything in the playoffs..Little Joe is the single most overrated player in the NHL..He is a pussy who doesn’t score goals and even his assists have gone south..From over 120 points to under 90 in two years..He is paid like a superstar but he is as far from one as you can get..

Get his shitty attitude and underachieving ass out of here while someone might take his terrible contract from us..If his scoring goes down anymore, his contract is unmovable..He has proven over and over again, he can’t take his game to a superstar level now even during the regular season and he might have the single WORST playoff reputation in the NHL..Move him for someone with
heart..

Most of Joe's assists from the years before went to D-men last year as a result of the system

I agree he has declined but I think the single worst sign from last year was his puck control went down steeply. In his first couple years with the Sharks you could not get the puck away from him if you had a crow bar and a shotgun. Last year it seemed that you could not go five minutes with out hearing, “Joe is in the corner and there goes the puck out of the zone”. At times he was having trouble making the touch passes he is so famous for also.

82+ games

I don’t think Joe has missed a game in his time in teal. He takes a beating. I wonder if resting him every now and again would be beneficial.

Joe used to be able to hold the puck a lot better, mostly because he’d get his legs wide and make it harder for D-men to reach around him without drawing a penalty. Whether it’s because he’s carrying a chronic injury or he’s slacking off, I don’t know. He also seems to not be able to knock down those high pucks off the glass. Used to be, he’d go behind the net, and the D could basically rocket the puck down along the boards, and no matter where it was, Joe’d just calmly knock it down and have it on his stick ready to pass (usually to Cheech in the high slot).

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed anything change in Joe’s game. But this is what I’ve noticed. To be fair, after the Art Ross campaign, everyone and their mother went after him. I don’t see how anyone can play at that level, take that kind of beating, and not suffer SOME kind of drop-off.

What has Mitchell done to deserve the contract he got?? There are two things that Mitchell has shone, one he can skate fast, the other is he knows how to get hurt..Does that deserve a three year 4.5 million dollar contract??

I don't know if by running full speed into a goal post means he is injury prone

I don’t get some of the contracts DW has done this year, (Huskins, ect.) but although I think he over paid, (3 yrs at 3.6 mil sounds about right) I am glad we have this kid locked up. As for what we know about him.

1) He is very very fast, (no lingering trouble from the leg)

2) He is a good 2-way player, (AND IS DEADLY ON THE PK)

3) He has very good hands, (and IMO will turn into a 30+ goal guy in the future)

4) He has already beat the Duck’s on one of the most sick goals of that year, (Just for this I want to sign him for life)

Mitchell will be a career 3rd liner. He’s fast, but his shot is pretty awful. He’s not very accurate on the wrister at all.

by Hobbes2d on Sep 4, 2009 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

And of course, Mitchell can’t improve his shot at all. Especially since he’s had just one year of NHL experience.

That said, I do doubt that Mitchell will ever reach 30 goals, but with some work, I can see him becoming a 20 goal scorer.

Kessel

He would be a very nice pickup and could add some serious young scoring talent to the team..I would rather see DW pick him up rather than Heatley..

His addition would certainly change some of the dynamics on the team, which the Sharks need desperately..

by The Sear on Sep 3, 2009 10:45 AM PDT reply actions

Please no Skoula

He’s awful. I had a roommate who was a Wild fan, so I got to watch him play some games, and he’s terrible. He isn’t very good defensively, he coughs up the puck a lot , and I don’t think he has much offensive upside. In short, I DO NOT want Martin Skoula on the Sharks.

I would be completely upset with DW if he even considered Martin Skoula, and I would call for his head if he actually picked Skoula up.

I'm unsure if the aforementioned players are bound for Teal Town

As suggested, most appear to be cold leftovers in the FA buffet, and the Sharks are not really in a position to grab a tray. I’d rather keep Cheech – you’re savvy to my reasons why. I’d likely make an awful GM because I’d be devoted to the relationship, which would override logistics.

I like Army, but he hasn’t seen postseason play in nearly a decade (should this be paramount? I don’t know) . If we’re looking to acquire an aging center, I’d rather bring back Buster.

For ‘Woostah’ I’d like to see the Sharks grab Spurgeon. Small frame, big heart, potentionl 4th line energy player (think Mark Smith). Needs to stay healthy. (and I may be showing by Stockton Thunder bias, though I don’t care for Rohlfs or Goulet)

As for blueliners, I’d lean more toward MAB, only because I’m more familiar with his style of play on a ‘defense first’ team. You state Seidenberg as your fave. Aside from age and point production, what other attributes intrigue you?

Commencing long post

I think they should sign Seidenberg, as they could probably used at least one more experienced defensemen, and he put up 30 points last year, but only five goals. Bergeron would be nice also Moore would be a nice add, but I am not sure how much he would help not getting top six minutes like he did for part in Toronto. Michel Ouellet I do not know much about, but he has put up some good numbers (besides last year in the AHL, which doesn’t really help). They all seem to be viable options, but I would go on the younger side and Oulett to add some scoring.
