Sharks send six prospects to Worcester — and how McLaren got that black eye
WTC reporting today that G Tyson Sexsmith, D Joe Loprieno, C Andrew Desjardins, C Stephen Zalewski, LW Kevin Henderson and LW John McCarthy were sent to Worcester.
He also delves into Petrecki's early game misconduct penalty last night, which left the team with only five defensemen in the game. Most interesting, though, is his assertion that Petrecki is getting serious looks from the coaching staff to start the season as the Sharks' 6th defenseman. If I were to handicap Petrecki's chances right now, I'd say he's a 3-2 favorite to make the team.

What do we think Stalock’s chances are considering Greiss has been less than steller so far?

oh, true
anyone know if we can actually bring Stalock up, then?
(I’m guessing that’s what you mean. Long night)

well that and also the numerical value considering the cap

I would think so, since he’ll be playing in Worcester this year, so he’s technically a professional now and now bound by any college or junior rules.
His contract may preclude him from doing so, though. Unless Nabby goes on the LTIR for any reason.

Fools and Sages
It depends on so many things- what Malhotra signs for, whether Mitchell gets placed on LTIR (likely), if Joslin or Petrecki make the team etc.
As it stands, Stalock is worth $165 K more than Greiss. With Nabokov likely to be the starter for the whole year regardless of who his backup is, I think you go with Greiss- has the NHL and AHL experience (the others don’t), and it saves you some valuable coin. Get Sexsmith and Stalock a large amount of reps down in Worcester and then utilize each of these guys two-way contracts later down the line if you need a change.

Like I said in the Preseason post, I was really looking forward to seeing Petrecki, so I was none too pleased when he got tossed before the 6 minute mark. Joslin didn’t look any worse than he did last year when he was up, but I would assume he’s the 7th man based on performance.
Since Sexsmith got to be backup last night, but didn’t get into the game and still managed to stay this long into preseason, I have a feeling he’ll get a chance to play a little bit this year. My gut tells me that Nabby won’t be in teal for playoffs, as a way to pare salary. I think we’ll see a trio of Greiss, Stalock, and Sexsmith by the end of the season.

I don’t know about that- the organization’s best opportunity to win the Cup is with Nabokov between the pipes. I don’t think he dumps salary at the deadline with a roster like this (and one built to win this year). Worst case scenario Nabokov walks in the offseason and you get nothing in return. Best case via trade is probably some draft picks, with none of them in the first round. Now you’re going into the playoffs with no experienced backup in case one of these young guys doesn’t perform.
It makes no sense.

It’s a gut feeling – does there have to be a rational reason? Without bring up past ghosts, I think we all know that he’s not exactly the best performer under pressure, like the playoffs. It also has something to do with the cap space available this year.

Definitely- I was just trying to think of it from Wilson’s point of view considering he is the one that would have to pull the trigger on it, and hopefully would have a rational reason for making that trade.
A gut feeling is a gut feeling though. Have you been right about other things? Plane crashes, lotto numbers? If so, sign me up.

You don’t want your hockey gut feelings to be right. Mine pretty much always are and it’s never beneficial for the Sharks.

I haven’t died in a plane crash or won the lottery. However, my gut has been right more often than Eklund, if that’s saying anything ground-breaking!
If you go back and look at the playoff predictions from rounds 2-4 (I joined right after our ouster), I had very good accuracy. It’s my gut feeling and nothing more than that. I thought I would post because it would make some sense for all of the recent tryouts and call-ups that would likely put us over the cap otherwise. I hope I’m wrong because I like Nabby, even if he isn’t the goalie he used to be, but this feels more like a business move. Oh, and 4 unanswered goals last night didn’t help his case. I don’t fault him for all of them, but it wasn’t pretty.

Being right more often than Eklund may not be groundbreaking, but boasting about it probably is ;)
I though Nabokov looked decent last night, but that fourth goal was all on him. Drops into the butterfly when the puck is at the point (huh?), and obviously can’t get over when they hit Turris with a nice pass in the far circle. No idea what he was thinking.
But yeah, do what you gotta do. And thanks for reminding me about the playoff prediction pool, I still have to do a piece on the results.

I love this.
One more fight note: Talked to Jody Shelley last night and asked if his, um, mugging of Alex Burrows in the previous game against Vancouver might have been a case of holding Burrows accountable for some misdeed of seasons past.
Nah, said Shelley. "I mean, this is pre-season, and there he is …" at which point Shelley holds the four fingers on one hand tightly together and brings them in rapid contact with his thumb repeatedly — the universal gesture for chirping.
I’ve always been intrigued with the whole enforcer aspect of hockey. It’s too bad that fans almost never know why enforcers do the things they do unless they come out and say it.
I assume the game was televised because a Canadian team was involved; does anyone have video of that beating? I’d love to see Burrows get taught a lesson.
A man must have a code.
It’s listed on hockeyfights.com but also points out that it was a sucker punch and that Burrows did not receive a fighting major.
